Feedback on update to SC 4.6.1 [tl;dr: Success!]
Hi Folks, > KDE Software Compilation 4.6.1 has been uploaded to > http://qt-kde.debian.net/. Follow instructions on the homepage if you are > considering to upgrade or install these packages. The website says that you would like feedback on any packaging issues. Updating from 4.5.1/3 previously in qt-kde.debian.net and following the instructions on the webpage with apt-get version 0.8.13 for amd64, everything appears to have updated properly with no errors. Are the removed/installed/updated package lists that apt-get reports any use to you? I have a log of them, but don't want to spam the list if they aren't any use. To be honest, there doesn't appear to be anything surprising in them. > This release has been brought to you by Debian Qt/KDE Maintainers (numbers > on the right are commit counts to pkg-kde git kde-sc repositories since > 4.4.5): Thank you all very much for your efforts - most appreciated! For me, the upgrade from the previous 4.5.1 packages went comparatively smooth. It involved some dependency juggling as described on http://qt- kde.debian.net/, but everything worked out. Even my previous session was restarted without a hitch. I've re-enabled the Strigi indexer, that for me previously caused more trouble than delight, and it's now ploughing trough my files. Occassionally, I'm getting notification dialogs that Nepomuk Service Stub (the process handling nepomukstrigiservice) has crashed with a segmentation fault, but nepomuk is recovering by itself, apparently. Also, I took the opportunity to switch Konqueror to using WebKit instead of KHTML[*]. Over the past year, with KHTML I've felt more and more left behind Firefox et al. A few problem sites I've tested work much better now. I miss Minitools (aka JavaScript bookmarks), but that's it. Again, thanks for your efforts. Re: KDE Software Compilation 4.6.1 has been uploaded to qt-kde.debian.net
a big thanks to you!!! finally, my april fool wasn't an april fool :D (see the other topic from yesterday) I'm now going to make the installation!
Re: KDE Software Compilation 4.6.1 has been uploaded to qt-kde.debian.net
after installing: VERY GOOD JOB!!! thanks a lot for your work! there is just a few things I noticed: - in this web-page, there's a mistake: http://qt-kde.debian.net/#notes4.4 you forgot the "X" from eXpermiental-snapshots: # apt-get -t eperimental-snapshots install kde-standard - as you say in your website, there is a problem with "kde-l10n-fr", we have to uninstall "konq-plugins-l10n" before the upgrade. I thought it would have been done by apt-get automatically (and maybe it would be easier) - I also had a message telling me that my sound card has been removed (and ask me if I wanted to remove the entry) and KDE did as if I install a new one (quite strange) the sound still function anyway - my connexion theme (asphyxia: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/Asphyxia?content=132589) doesn't work at all anymore - in amarok, I lost all my collection and for the moment, I don't succeed to make it come back (none of my folders have changed...) - in dolphin, my HDD's partitions appear like extern HDD, but they are mounted at the boot, configured in fstab, and it wasn't like that before (new feature or bug?) - my "boîte à miniature" in french (in english, maybe something like "miniature box"? the thing at the left of the clock where appear things like sound level, network, amarok's logo...) lost its configuration (logo I said they must be hidden). well, I think that's all for the moment. everything else work so fine and KDE 4.6 is really fun! thank you! PS: excuse my bad english... if you want some more explanations on something I said, I'll try to be more understandable :D

I was a bit surprising to me - maybe only for me or due to my absence on IRC - as I checked approx. 24hrs and there was 4.5.x news listed. OK, I saw the progress/status in the GIT repos, but didn't guess the fun will be today. Unfortunately, I had some manual rework. IIRC first thing was I missed startkde (-> ~/.xinitrc): I installed kde*-workspace-bin. The min|max|close buttons were gone and windows could not be moved etc., IIRC I installed the kde-window-manager to fix this. OK, I made a simple d-u in sid as normally, did not see/follow the instructions to upgrade my 4.5.x (see ). Anyway, with removing orphans (deborphan), manually throwing away old cruft stuff (Oops, I had kpdf and the 3.5.10 libs still installed :-)) and substituting 4.5.x pkgs with 4.6.x ones, I can say 4.6.1 works nicely. And I guess I got rid of some latest sidux pkgs here. Strange was I could not upgrade to the polkit stuff with version 0.99.0, so I did: $ apt-get install -t experimental $pkgname=$version On my todo-list is to turn off the nepomuk stub(?) warning at kde-startup and the enery-/pm tray-icon seems not to work properly. To be honest, I would turn off nepomuk completely. Any advice? Good work and nice to see new faces in the commit highscore. Re: KDE Software Compilation 4.6.1 has been uploaded to qt-kde.debian.net
Hi, Excellent work, all. I'm sure many people don't realise just how much effort goes into crafting a quality set of packages like these. Thank you so much. (Now I can start legitimately submitting bugs upstream, again. Yay!) I've got a couple of things to report about my installation. I was upgrading from a strange Frankenstein's monster of a testing/unstable/experimental- snapshots hybrid system. Largely it went well, after massaging the dependencies into an acceptable state through aptitude. An issue I found is that the kde-config-tablet package does not play nicely with these new packages at all. It causes the KDE Daemon to crash, which means cookies go down, the systray reverts to those colourful icons, and I'm sure some other functionality gets lost. Simple solution was to uninstall kde- config-tablet; it's not really in a useful state for me yet anyway. Also, seems like kopete can't exit without crashing. Not sure what this one's caused by. Nothing else has caught my attention (yet), so it looks rather good here. Hope some of that info is useful to someone. It's definitely inside one of KMail's maildirs. The backtrace I'm getting in gdb is below. It looks like I'm lacking the proper debug symbols, but I don't know which package I'd need to install. I had that too, while the correct folder was marked for the collection. Doing a full rescan fixed it for me, but I lost the ratings. I don't know if Nepomuk is supposed to pick up ratings from Amarok, but it seems not to work. Diederik -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kde-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". This backtrace looks more useful. The cause appears to be the last line (or two, considering wrapping) of this snippet string& QuotedPrintableDecoder::decodeQuotedPrintable(const char* v, uint32_t len) { if (decoded.size() < len) { decoded.reserve(len); } decoded.resize(0); const char* pos = v; const char* end = v + len; char c; while (v < end) { if (*v == '=' && end - v > 2 && isxdigit(v[1]) && isxdigit(v[2])) { That line by itself looks ok, I take it, that the v argument to the function is faulty, to begin with. I'll give it a try tomorrow to debug into it.
