Nothing in /usr/share/autostart runs

2006-05-09 Thread Russel Hill

I run a (more-or-less) headless machine and start KDE in a vnc server.
I had been running 'testing' but switched to 'unstable'. When I
switched to 'unstable', nothing in /usr/share/autostart runs when kde
starts. I get an desktop with a VNC Config dialog and (fortunately) a
konsole. I can run kdesktop, kicker, etc from the konsole and
everything seems to work as expected (more-or-less). There's nothing
obvious in the log files. I've tried starting a vnc server for a new
user, cleaning various directories (/tmp, /var/tmp, ~/.kde).  I also
couldn't find anything in the archive.

Versions:
Qt: 3.3.6
KDE: 3.5.2
KWin: 3.0

I'm not exactly clear where to look next. I've probably missed
something that will be obvious in retrospect.

Any guidance, or even a nudge in the right direction will be appreciated.

I get devices like
/dev/disk/by-label/
so I think my volumelabes are set up correctly. But why does kde not mount the
volums under /media/ but under /media/sdxy ? What am I missing.

Of course I can use the /dev/disk/by-label but it would be nicer and more
intuitive it kde would use the labels in media.

Re: 3.4.0 kcontrol->peripherals->mouse->logitech problem

2006-05-09 Thread Wolfgang Mader
If I understood the help text the right way I need to install hotplug. But
hotplug can't be installed if udev is installed. Do I have to uninstall udev
in oder to get the permissons right for my mouse?

And another question: I read a lot about how to get all buttons work on my
logitech mx1000 laser. They all use xbindkeys and xvkbd. The last one is the
problem. This is not installalbe at the moment. But - if I am be able to
install it (e.g. if the version number fitts to the neede one by x11) will
the mouse than work. Has someone a setup in which this mouse works by using
this software components?

Thank you in advance W. Mader

aRts crashes playing streams

2006-05-09 Thread Christoph Sticksel
Hi there,

strange problem here, I don't quite know where to look. ARts seems to play
only audio files and crash on streamed audio.

The basic sound system (ALSA) works: xmms can play the desired streams and
audio files perfectly well. Artsd also seems to work as I can get system
notifications and play audio files with noatun and amaroK.

Strange things start when using libarts in xmms. I get "failed to open audio
output: aRts Output 0.7.1". The console output is

| Message: wait_for_helper(): select failed: Interrupted system call
| Message: waiting failed: 1
| Message: helper_cmd_data(): failed
| Message: helper has not terminated
| Message: Init failed: 1
| Message: helper_cmd_data(): failed
| Message: helper has not terminated
| xmms-mad-Message: failed to open audio output: aRts Output 0.7.1

It gets even stranger trying to play streamed audio. A different dialog
appears saying "Couldn't open audio" in the title and furter "Please check
that soundcard is configured correctly ...".

| Message: wait_for_helper(): select failed: Interrupted system call
| Message: waiting failed: 1
| Message: helper_cmd_data(): failed
| Message: helper has not terminated
| Message: Init failed: 1
| Message: helper_cmd_data(): failed
| Message: helper has not terminated

At both times I can get system notifications so artsd seems to work.

As said above, noatun plays audio files. When I open a stream, I get the
following output on the console and arts crashes with SIGSEGV.

| MCOP StartupManager: adding a StartupClass after Dispatcher init will not
| work.
| (The previous message was repeated 1 times.)
| unix_connect: can't connect to server
| (unix:/tmp/ksocket-chris/localhost.localdomain-1b26-4460a256)
| Launched ok, pid = 6989

I can try to play it again, hear some cracks in the speakers (artsd seems to
be restarting) and artsd crashes again -- this time noatun also quits with
this message on the console.

| *** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0xa7b2dd08 ***
| KCrash: Application 'noatun' crashing...

About the same results for amaroK. It plays audio files and I could just now
play a stream for a few seconds! Trying again it eats up all CPU time, does
not react on inputs and does not play anything, but I can get system
notifications. I also once got it crashing artsd with a SIGSEGV like noatun.

| QObject::connect: No such slot ArtsEngine::newStreamData(char*,int)
| QObject::connect:  (sender name:   'unnamed')
| QObject::connect:  (receiver name: 'unnamed')

For the details: I tried the newest unstable versions of xmms and xmms-arts,
noatun and amaroK on a current KDE install.
