I could not find any bug report. It probably needs a different /etc/pam.d file the one that is in the sid debs uses the common-* stuff from newer pam, so that might be the cause if its being used for woody by mistake. I know this doesn't count as RTD (Reading The Documentation), but I find that The 'qt-mt' libs are still missing even when I tried several variations of your and Chris Cheneys compiling options. I think it would be better for me at this point to actually RTD (or perhaps RT*M) as you said, rather than posting these questions on the list whenever I got into trouble :). Thank you guys anyway, at least now I'm heading to right direction. One more question on this topic. Chris mentioned 'admin/debianrules' to look at but I couldn't find a match for that. Where to find it or what package to install to have it? What else do you advice me to read for better understanding how to compile for Debian and what packages are involved when compiling apps for KDE? Select the file you want to open, and then from the "Edit" menu, choose "Edit File Type...". Go to the "Embedding" tab, and choose "Show file in embedded viewer". Click OK. You may have to refresh the directory contents before the change takes effect. Side note: The dialogue apparently assumes KDE is configured for single-clicking with the left mouse button. This may not be the case, so it should probably be re-labelled. -- Alex Nordstrom

I think, the big problem with this upgrade is that it differs too much from the other kde versions for woody. Is it really necessary to upgrade to xfree 4.3.0? The 3.2.0 kde packages dealt well with 4.1.0 and also got along with libqt3-mt and the 3.2.2 packages now come with libqt3c102-mt. I think these packages were build on a sid or sarge system and not on a woody system, is that possible? ingo
Installing Agypten with KDE 3.2
Hi, I am using Debian unstable with KDE3.2 installed. I've been trying off and on for the past six months to install the Agypten plugins with KMail. I would like to be able to sign/encrypt my e-mails using S/MIME encryption. Is this possible with Debian and Agypten? Can I use the Debian compiled KMail or do I have to build my own? Does the Debian KMail (3.2.2) require patching? What packages (and versions) do I need? I've tried (several times) following the instructions found on http://www.gnupg.org/aegypten/development.en.html. When I load the plugin into KMail, I get the following error: Error: Plug-in "GPGMe-SMIME" initialization unsuccessful. library: /usr/lib/cryptplug/gpgme-smime.so version: 0.3.16 Plug-in is out-dated or not installed properly. At this point, the actual software on my system is a complete mixture of Debian and locally compiled packages. I should probably clean it out and start over from scratch. But first I want to know if it is possible, exactly what versions of what packages need to be used, and how to do it. Can I use Agypten with the S/MIME plugin to sign/encrypt e-mail on KMail 1.6.2 (KDE 3.2.2)? Thanks! ~joe -- Joseph (LittleRed) Martin [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.desertflood.com/

Hello Chris! Thanks a lot. That fixed the problem. Yes,the file /etc/pam.d/kdm from KDE 3.2.2 looks like this: @include common-auth @include common-account @include common-password @include common-session auth required pam_nologin.so auth required pam_env.so sessionrequired pam_limits.so I have taken /etc/pam.d/kdm from (my old) KDE 3.1.5 installation: #%PAM-1.0 auth required pam_nologin.so auth required pam_unix.so shadow nullok auth required pam_env.so accountrequired pam_unix.so sessionrequired pam_unix.so sessionrequired pam_limits.so # (Remove `md5' after the module name to disable MD5 passwords password required pam_unix.so nullok obscure min=4 max=8 md5 # Alternate strength checking for password. Note that this # requires the libpam-cracklib package to be installed. # You will need to comment out the password line above and # uncomment the next two in order to use this. # (Replaces the `OBSCURE_CHECKS_ENAB', `CRACKLIB_DICTPATH') # # password required pam_cracklib.so retry=3 minlen=6 difok=3 # password required pam_unix.so use_authtok nullok md5 Additionally, i have removed /etc/pam.d/kdm-np (What is it for? It was not in 3.1.5 ...). Now kdm works as expected again! Bye, Steffen

KAB access error after update
Hi All, I can't edit my kde addressbook after updating to 3.2.1 and 3.2.2. Any program (including kmail and kaddressbook) trying to access the standard addressbook fails to modify it. For example, kmail fails with: kmail: ERROR: The resource '_home_da209_.kde_share_apps_kabc_std.vcf' is locked by application ''. kmail: ERROR: Unable to save to resource 'resource-name'. It is locked. What does this mean, and how can I fix it?? Thanks, Daniel.
icons license
Hello, I am developing a website for a prominent NYC non-profit, & one aspect of the application provides the user access to download a number of files of various types. In looking around for a set of icons to represent these types, I came across /usr/share/icons/default.kde. These icons are perfect: attractive, uniform, ready-made. Ultimately, my question will be: Can I use these icons (both as-is and modified versions) as elements of a site I am building? Immediately, however, I am having trouble determining even what license these icons are released under. Using apt-file I see that /usr/share/icons/default.kde is created by the kdelibs-data package. /usr/share/doc/kdelibs-data/copyright indicates that "All programs are either under the BSD, GPL or LGPL licenses", but is not more specific about shared files. Thinking perhaps kdelibs-data only creates the directory and other apps populate it as they are installed, I tried a more granular search, but apt-file search /usr/share/icons/default.kde/128x128/filesystems/www.png doesn't return anything. I tried browsing around webcvs.kde.org to see if I could find the icons in their original package, but there's just too much there & the structure seems quite alien to me. Therefore, I ask you: Do you know what original KDE package(s) these files came from? (specifically, in addition to www.png, I'd need several of those found in the 'mimetypes' directory) Do you know what license they are released under? Thanks in advance, Kenneth P.S. Please Cc: me as I am not subscribed to debian-kde

I think all of the artwork is licensed under the GPL, but you would have to contact the authors to find out for certain what the license is on an individual file.
