Well, I didn't run Debian's standard kernel as my iBook G4 isn't fully
supported by it. I used Ben's kernel sources, 2.4.23 or 2.4.24, don't
know exactly which version it was. Other than selecting the
dmasound_pmac module when configuring the kernel I did nothing special
to get sound working. artsd just worked.

Did you also check /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers?
This has -dpi 100 by default and gets overwritten when kdm is upgraded (which

I had exactly the same problem. I tried starting X with
startx -- -dpi 75 and that solved the problem. If this also works
for you, you can make X run in 75 dpi mode by default by editing
/etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc

KDE3.2 greeter plugin

Hi,

I upgraded to KDE 3.2 without much hassle, yet there is one problem I
can't find a solution for. When i try to lock the screen it fails
saying:

No appropriate greeter plugin configured."

I've searched for a way to configure greeter plugins but I cannot find
anything about them. I hope somebody here can point me at the right

Same problem here. Suppose an applet for kicker is missing :

kicker-applets

But if I try to install it apt reports:

Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
kicker-applets: Depends: kdelibs3 (>= 4:2.2.2-1) but it is not going

install kdm and everything will be fine.
that's another case of "the packagers screwed it ;)". the greeter
plugins are located in the kdm sources, but are shared between
kdesktop_lock and kdm -> separate package on which kdm and kdesktop (or
whatever the package is named) must depend on.

Check what version kdm is at - someone else had this problem and found he

If you had read my website you would know i use 75 dpi :)
Problem ist, 75dpi in 3.1.4 is ok, 75dpi in 3.2 is ugly.

You are so damn right - this was at least a solution for KDE 3.1.4
I had -dpi 75 in /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc, but 100dpi in xserverrc.
Now i changed (still KDE 3.1.4) all to 100 dpi and started X
-> Fonts are ugly like on screenshots (the right side). In this 100dpi
mode Helvetica [Adobe] in 9pt is too big and 8pt to small. So i
changed all to 75dpi and now all is fine. Of couse i had increase font
heights about 3pt (9pt>12pt) so in 75dpi mode now all looks like on
the left screenshots but with pt set to 12/11 instead 9/8.

I will now upgrade to KDE 3.2.0 again and let you know if this solved
my font issues.

If I am correct, /etc/kde3/kdm/Xservers is used when your session is
started via kdm, and /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc when you start if from
a tty via startx or similar.

Upgraded to 3.2 and all is fine. 12pt is now like i want it, only
Courier [Bitstream] font is missing for fixed font width fonts.

Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.

2004-02-07 Thread Shaun Jackman
When I start KDE I see an error message
"Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation."

I searched the mailing lists, and saw this problem before

It was supposed to be fixed in xrender (0.8.3-2), but I have libxrender1

Is this the same xrender problem, or a different bug?

I started seeing this when I upgraded to

Check your ~/.xsession-error after that message appears for 'undefined
function' / 'reloaction error' or something similar. I had problems
with FT_Stream_Seek/ FT_Seek_Stream since i used a mozilla backport
for woody which installed a newer libfreetype6 so i had to purge
mozilla and these libs before getting KDE started.

See this thread:

There are several causes listed there (conflicts with other backports).

And yes, I have this in my .xsession-errors:

startkde: Starting up...
kdeinit: relocation error: /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3: undefined \

startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.

However, I have here libfreetype6 2.0.9-1 which is IMHO what is

Could it be the mistake on part of download.kde.org packages

Re: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.

2004-02-07 Thread Shaun Jackman
It looks like libfreetype6 is indeed the problem. It's funny I didn't
have this problem with kde 3.1.2 though.

startkde: Starting up...
kdeinit: relocation error: /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3: undefined symbol:
FT_Seek_Stream
startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.

The culprit definitely seems to be libfreetype6, which I have
installed from testing because I am running Xfree86 4.2.1.

libfreetype62.1.7-2 install ok installed
libfreetype62.0.9-1 stable
libfreetype62.1.7-2 testing
libfreetype6/testing uptodate 2.1.7-2

So it seems kde 3.2 (from download.kde.org) conflicts with
libfreetype6 2.1.7-2. Is it possible to run Xfree86 4.2.1 and KDE 3.2
on the same system?

Hello, after the upgrade kde 3.1.4 -> 3.2 and the error:

kdeinit: relocation error: /usr/lib/libqt-mt.so.3: undefined symbol:
FT_Seek_Stream
startkde: Could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.

I cleaned my installation of KDE 3.2 (--purge and I manually removed /etc/kde3
and /etc/kde3rc) and I reinstalled kde 3.1.4
But now I obtain the same error !!!
I can't understand ... Now I'm exactly in the previous situation.

System: woody + xfree 4.3 and other few packages (from backport) + kde (from
kde.org) (no testing, no unstable).
libfreetype6: 2.1.7-0.backports.org.1

Bye.
