XFree86 4.2 btw includes xlibs-pic as well, 4.3 includes xlibs-static-pic however it provides xlibs-pic so this should still work, right? Maybe the issue is the people using the 4.3 backport have to manually install xlibs-static-pic for it to satisfy the dependency (iow apt-get won't automatically resolve the issue). KDE 3.1.4 and Audio/System Sounds
Hello! Sorry for the previous post being in German - haven`t kept in mind that this is an English speaking list. Now, my problem is the following: I used to have installed KDE 3.1.2 on my woody system (deb www.debian.cz/pub/debian-czsk/kde/Debian/woody/i686) and everthing seemed to work just right as far as I could tell. Then I wanted to upgrade to the latest version from download.kde.org/stable/3.1.4/Debian, I did both an apt-get upgrade and the second time purged all of KDE and did a fresh install of KDE. Both times though, I did not get to hear any system sounds. On the one hand I can test the sound system from the control center/sound system tab, and it works. But when I want to set the sounds for system notifications I can choose the files to be played at startup, but when I press the play button, neither doI hear nothing, nor do I get any error message, just nothing. Trying to play an audio file from within konqueror also fails. There I get the message: kdeinit could not launch kaboodle. But kaboodle works just fine when being launched from konsole. Anyone else having experienced this? Where else could I start searching to get this solved? Thanks a lot for your help. Gruss, Bjoern Beckmannn
Again: Delays starting KDE apps after upgrade 3.1.3 => 3.1.4
Hi, since upgrading KDE to version 3.1.4 on Debian Woody I experince delays when starting KDE applications. Don't had these delays on KDE 3.1.3. My /etc/hosts contains valid entries for localhost and the name of the machine. The delays occur for example when - accessing the first webpage from konqueror (status line says "xxx contacted. Waiting for reply where xxx is the hostname. It is regardless which host I access. The next access comes at fast as expected. - starting kmail (needs more than 10 seconds to start, half that long with KDE 3.1.3) Any suggestions? The problem is that dannyS's backport/build is too old. Therefore people using woody using the older woody packages are not getting that because xlibs-static-pic wasn't part of that package set IIRC. problem with docs
Hi, I have this problem with compiling applications for KDE. For example 'Apollon', found at apollon.sf.net . The docs are always installed in /usr/ share/doc/HTML/en/apollon while from other programs they are in /usr/share/ doc/kde/HTML/en/apollon. KHelpcenter only finds those handbooks from the programs which have their docs installed in the latter directory, so I don't have my docs available from the help menu in Apollon! What can I do about this? many thanks, Tom Deblauwe,

Out-of-date font cache. Fix by running fc-cache -f -v as root. 2. /tmp/.ICE-unix/ missing or has wrong owner/group/permissions. To fix, execute following commands as root. mkdir /tmp/.ICE-unix chown root.root /tmp/.ICE-unix chmod 1777 /tmp/.ICE-unix 3. I've also found that if you're on a non-permanent net connection such as a dialup, it helps to run your own DNS server, since many programs expect DNS service to be working at all times, otherwise they throw errors or sit through long timeouts before responding to user input. For a home workstation on a ppp connection, pdnsd is a good personal DNS server that gets the job done without creating too many hassles.

I have tried creating these files as root in an init script which get executed on boot, and it doesn't make any difference in speed on my system. Not any that I can notice anyway. But I can't complain about the speed in any case. It's as snappy as bulky old XFree86 gets. Anders -- This email was generated using KMail from KDE 3.1.3 on Debian GNU/Linux

More KDE font problems
I'm running Debian Sid x86 on my laptop and recently an update (kde i think) caused all kde applications to (including kdm) default to the first available truetype font, which looks almost unreadable. I tried fooling around with it and moving the font it uses, but it simply chooses the next available font. I moved the entire /usr/share/fonts/truetype directory and it still finds the next available font (this time non-truetype). Also the KDE configuration panel does nothing to fix this. Also I'm not using the XFS font server from my XF4 config file (should I?). It seems like the KDE font configs broke or something... Any suggestions?
