I'm ignorming mails about kde.debian.net/tdyc.com
I'm getting tired of "what's going on with kde.debian.net?" "when's it coming back" "hey..did you kow the server is back online now?" "what's going on with the server?" "what about rsync" the server has been up for several days now and with the exception of a few dns issues I'm still working on has been fully functional for those days. rsync has been up and running the entire time. I will continue to hit delete on any question that comes directly to my email box. starting kde2
My last update/upgrade of my potato system broke KDE2 startup, both from kdm and from the command line. I manually made a couple of links in /etc/alternatives to get it working. What I have now is twocups:/etc/alternatives# ls -l x-* lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 13 May 27 17:33 x-session-manager -> /usr/bin/kde2 lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 16 May 27 17:32 x-terminal-emulator -> /usr/bin/konsole lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 17 May 30 00:02 x-window-manager -> /usr/bin/startkde Kdm logins work, startx works, but a lot of the fonts are large and blocky. Sound server not initialising
The KDE sound server doesn't seem to initialise when I boot my machine. I don't get any sound from KDE at all (or, indeed, from anything else). I've got "Sound I/O method" set to "Open Sound System". If I then go into the Sound Server config and explicitly set it to "Open Sound System" again (i.e., change the dropdown to something else, then back to "Open Sound System") and Apply, I get a dialog box about restarting the sound server -- saying "yes" works, but it then blocks other programs from using the soundcard (XMMS says that it can't open the audio). I normally have to randomly play with the Sound Server settings a bit to get it to work, but unfortunately I don't know how I get it working. I appreciate that this is not a lot to go on, but does anyone have any suggestions? How to change usable desktop area?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I have GKrellM [1] open all the time, in fact two copies when I'm online (one from another machine). I'd like to have it always visible, but don't want to set it always on top as it would obscure a fairly large region of other windows, especially when I have two of them. I currently use the kicker extension "Dock Application Bar" on the right-hand edge of the screen, which sets a "strut" in the window manager so maximised windows will stay off that edge of the screen, where I can then put GKrellM. This works very well except a few brain damaged apps, notably most Java Swing apps I've seen so far, seem to set themselves dockable and thus try and squeeze themselves into a square on this docking bar. And so (finally, sorry this is so long) to my questions: is there a better way to do this? Some other means of setting a strut, beyond coding something specially for the purpose? I would be prepared to write something; would anyone else here find a plain "strut" kicker extension or app useful? I was having similar problems with Ivan's old version of Brahms but I assumed it was a combination of Brahms being compiled for KDE1 and some simple configuration problem with my sound. I have arts working and xmms, timidity++ and other work, though some things need to be run through artsdsp, like mtvp, but I also have problems with kmid?i? The karioke one, the other KDE midi player with all the advanced features works, but the sound keep breaking up on my system, a PII350 with 256M memory. I've been told that brahms is now in the KDE cvs, but not yet in the official files. I would like to have Brahms, and would be willing to compile and test this with my system, but I know very little about making sure that it goes in the proper place for Debian or haw to make deb's. I've read a few of the mails about this, but just wanted to get a good feel about what I need to read and know before possibly making improper deb's. I know that Ivan had a page about the subject, but I still can't reach the new kde.debian.net server. The other consideration is tha I'm running Progeny, but with Ivan's more up-to-date KDE2.1. As this is a mix of potato, testing, Ivan's potato kde packages and some custom Progeny packages, I would need to be sure that I had the proper versions of everything before I started compiling anything anyway. Please be gentle, I'm not a real programmer. I just like playing with Linux and realy, realy want brahms as rosegarden is far too limited and buggy to do anything with at all! A good document for reading to explain the proper locations for Debian files and tools I should have would be welcome. Cheers, John Gay
