 Velkomin Davíð!

It's great to have the Icelandic language in Debian! The wonderful
thing about the Net in general, and translation projects in
particular, is that we can share our languages and cultures so easily
from parts of the world as distant as yours and mine. :)

"Debian speaks your language." :)

We should have a T-shirt made. Do we have a webpage yet, where we say
that in all our different languages?

That would be fun, as well as giving any browser's Unicode support a
good workout. ;)

Good luck with everything, Davíð, especially your study, your Debian
system and the Icelandic Team!

Providing context (was: Re: Limping on with GIMP)

Is this really our responsibility? I'm interested.

I'd say it's the responsability of the maintainers and the
translators:

the maintainers might not know/think that one particular string is
difficult to translate. However, it's true that maintainers probably
have a better idea of what should be written in the comments...

Thanks, Vincent, that helps clarify it for me. There's a current
thread on the TP list about the context issue in general, and it
brought up _how_ we as translators could add to contextual
information for each other, as our part of this responsibility. (The
maintainer part being up to them, although we might be able to have
useful input.)

We really need a way for the comments we _can_ input to be picked up
when the main file is updated, and then passed out with all the
updated PO files. Could this be done by adapting any of the l10n
scripts currently in action?

For example, I finally work out what:

msgid "S"

means, and input my comment:

# This stands for Silly String, and appears in the Strange Menu
msgid "S"
msgstr "Chuỗi ngớ ngẩn"

and upload the file. Next time the original file is updated, a script
is run which collects all current comments from the PO files, then
makes sure each PO file has all the comments (a variant on
msgmerge?). One could imagine a large total of comments, but
certainly to start out with, it would provide the translator with
some information in the PO file, not having to hunt it up anywhere
else, and allow us to help each other out, not duplicate effort.

Is this at all doable?

Probably there are efforts around; one should avoid splitting teams
without colaborating, we have this ciurrently in Romania, and is not
good at all (we intend to fix this soon)

We can add it to the wiki ;-)

I have just added the page to the Wiki:

Well, the "around" for Iceland is really small..:-) (in terms of number of
people)

I already pointed David to the early discussions that took place in
debian-user-icelandic about Debian translations. Up to now, the interest to
translate the installer in Icelandic was not that high because many
Icelandic geeks share the unfortunately common feeling that, as most of the
people in their country speak English, this is not needed (which is a
complete mistake if one thinks way far ahead from the geeky
communityeven people with good skills in a foreign language want to use
tools in their *native* language).

I guess there is some l10n effort for end-user applications in Icelandic,
but David is probably aware of this...or will soon contact some of them
anyway.

I disagree, if translators believe that comments should be added,
they talk to developers and such comments are added to sources
and automatically merged into PO files afterwards.
With your solution, you cannot know who made these comments, and
what happens if several people add comments in different PO files
at the same time?

This can also be achieved by adding a comments.po file which
is hand edited by translators if they want to add comments before
they reach sources.
I believe that it is pretty useless, but we could give it a try.

Denis
