I have seen discussions on debian mailing lists and elsewhere. The GNU FDL is considered by Debian to be a non-free license because of the part that contains "invariant sections" whereby you can make a section non-changeable. http://people.debian.org/~srivasta/Position_Statement.html The one I currently use for my documentation is the Open Publication License which is used by at least some Debian documentation (I haven't checked all the Debian docs). Other ones you might want to consider are the Design Science Lisence http://www.gnu.org/licenses/dsl.html which is used by the Linux Cookbook. 2.6 based clients with sound on pr05 (documented)
Hi, I've been working for a while on getting pr05 (and afew other releases previously) working on some new Dell Optiplex 170t's to go into some small schools here in the UK. I had trouble with hardware support so got the clients using the 2.6 based kernel and modules, its all pretty much working now, but since I'm doing this for work, I've documented the process as a sort of simple installation guide which someone unfamiliar with linux should be able to follow. I asked about contributing the docs on the IRC channel, and they said to ask here - can/should I contribute the docs, will they be useful? They should apply to anyone setting up Intel ICH5 based PCs with pr05 (I'm also being encouraged by work to contribute them, as they want to be seen to give something back). The PDF is available here: http://www.jim.moodle.uk.net/skole/installing_configuring_skolelinux_05.pdf (The PDF is possibly not final, I'm looking at including how to install fai to provide Windows images to the workstations aswell) I'd appreciate any comments/feedback, Cheers, Jim [EMAIL PROTECTED]

esd - only first user gets sound
Hi, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, I couldn't find it in the archives but I'm sure I read something about it. The problem I'm having is on the thin clients I've setup (using the 2.6.9-ltsp-3 kernel), the first user (say, user01) logs in and gets sound from the server without a problem, if they then log out, and user02 logs in, they get the error message about not being able to connect to the sound server. I've been looking on the clients, and the esd server is still running but (I'm guessing) is denying access to the new user, presumably because the first user takes ownership of it. To confirm I've manually killed the server and re-run the rc.sound script to start it back up, as before the first user that logs in gets sound, but any after that don't. It's worth noting that if user01 logs out, then logs back in again (or even with another user inbetween) they will still get sound, which supports the idea that the esd server is being owned by the first user that connects to it. The solution would seem to be to kill the esd server on logout, but there is no way that the thin client knows when a user logs out (it's all fowarded X?) so there isn't any part of the logout script that can be editted to kill the esd daemon as the scripts run on the actual server! (afaik, anyway). Could anyone suggest a way of instructing the client to kill it's esd daemon, or an equally clever workaround? :) Thanks, James [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Changing user name generation
Hi, I've been playing with Skole a reasonable amount recent, and have put it into afew small schools near where I am, one of the biggest problems we're having is the username generation - although the add ldap user script works well, for the schools I've put Skole into, it generates really bad usernames :) The ideal solution would just be another field on the webmin page to specify a username, instead of one being generated (if one wasn't specified, the username could still be auto-generated?) - that way we can have usernames the reflect the yeargroup or class name of the student, for instance '02g3jy' for a student in year 2, class g3 with the initials jy. I've tried looking at the perl which makes up the webmin module, and though I've picked up some perl since looking, it seems to be using a templating system which is beyond me (at the moment anyway). What I'm after are any hints as to what exactly needs changing (I'm looking at ldap-users.pl, EnterManyUsers.tmpl.html and WebminLdapSkolelinux.pm) and mabye a broad idea of how to go about it, or possibly to suggest the inclusion of this as a feature in a future release? DVD Cover
Hi All, I've just finished some work on the new website and also thought it would be a nice idea to design a DVD cover for the project. It was mainly just for some sample work for my portfolio as i know you dont sell CD's but i thought it was worth submitting as it could be used by vendors that are selling SkoleLinux. I've also included a 3d box shot which could be used for online advertising etc. The link is on the artwork team page which is here: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/Teams/ArtWork Please feel free to let me know what you think. Also if there is anymore graphic design work for the project i'd be willing to have a crack at it. Thanks James -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Re: DVD Cover
Also, I do not really like the list of contributors on the front. First of all, it is not a complete list, and it not a correct list for the sarge based version either. And I suspect the area is better spent talking positive about skolelinux/Debian Edu, to save us the effort of trying to make it accurate. If you could point me in the direction of some good content to put here i would be very grateful as I'm not the best writer in the world and don't know a huge amount about the project. I would also need some text to go on the back too. If anyone can help with this please let me know and i'll start updating the design. I would love to have a kdm login screen that made it more obvious that the installation is a Skolelinux/Debian Edu installation. I managed to rip out the Kubuntu logo, but were unable to insert a replacement. The debian-edu-artwork package got the current images. I have added my attempt at a login screen onto the debianEdu team artwork pages[1]. I don't know what the current one looks like so this one could well be worse than what you have already. I have also added a quick wallpaper that fits in with the rest of the work ive done so far. Once again i welcome constructive criticism, after all you are the ones who know the needs of the project best. Re: DVD Cover
You can work with the checkout as if this are normal files. (Or what else do you mean with preview? If I get you wrong please mail back ;-) ) I've never done anything like this before so it would be quite useful to be able to see visualy what it will look like before uploading it. Basically what i want to know is if there is anyway i can 'build' the login screen without having to build the entire skolelinux and without having to upload it into the svn. This would be really useful because i think this is going to be a very experimental process... I've found the kdm documentation but there isnt really much in terms of writing the xml file so i'm still trying to decypher different parts of it. Re: DVD Cover
Also very beautiful. Did you use the vector graphics? I used inkscape for my wallpapers. No, i'm actually still using windows so i used photoshop for the graphics. As for the DVD cover, reading my name on it makes me smile. However, I doubt that I deserve the honour to be listed within top 20 developers. Maybe it's better to state one or two persons who are in charge, additionally we list all hundred people in tiny letters. The list on the front was simply what i found on the debian teams pages. I actually rather like the idea of having a little bit more text about the dvd in this area i just need someone to provide me with some suitable text. Just another idea for artworks I found on a swiss page: http://www.ossanschulen.ch/ What was it that you wanted me to look at on this page? Also while i'm here, does anyone know of any good tutorials for getting debian to work on microsoft virtual pc 2004 so that i can easily test out my login screen? nice, thanks, perhaps put below Navigation http://www.skolelinux.de/images/award.jpg I will work on doing that, I have tried adding a block to the right sidebar but no luck. I'll work on getting this on there asap. are you using a cms? which one? Yes, the site is currently running on drupal, and i believe its version 5.x i would like to see somewhere: http://www.skolelinux.de/images/automat/skole-europ.png I'm not sure whereabouts i should place this because i dont speak norwegian therefore don't understand any of the articles. If you want that included on a new page you'll probably either have to create a page yourself or talk to the people who are currently writing the content for the site. Also, i know that the site will be translated to english but will it be translated to other languages such as german etc? If so would it be a good idea to have a central page on skolelinux.org that offers the user the choice of which language they would like to view. They could then be redirected to skolinux.no or skolelinux.co.uk etc. Do you think this is a good idea? Thanks James -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: DVD Cover
You will need a running instance of Skolelinux, either on a physical or virtual machine. For testing with a virtual machine, see http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu/HowTo/TestCDinstall>. If you select a standalone installation, you should get an instance that would be easy to copy the package into it using scp or wget (from the inside of the virtual machine, that is). To build the package, you need a debian machine with all the build dependencies installed. Any Debian/Etch machine will do, and use 'apt-get build-dep debian-edu-artwork' to install them. I also suggest installing fakeroot, lintian and devscripts, to be able to build the package as a normal user using 'debuild'. I now have skoleLinux 2.0 installed on a virtual PC and have tried running the following under root user - 'apt-get build-dep debian-edu-artwork' however it says E: You must put some 'source' URI's in your sources.list Do you know why this isnt working? does this command simply download the login artwork from the svn? Also how do i get write permissions on the svn, and if when experimenting i upload a login screen which when i test it doesnt work, will this affect the project in anyway? basically can i upload login screens that im not sure if they will work in order to test them. Artwork
Hi, I'm currently in the process of trying to update the debian-edu-artwork package with some new artwork. unfortunately i'm actually starting my GCSE's in about two weeks and therefore really need to focus all my attention on them for the next month or two. I just thought i'd let everyone know so that you don't think that i've simply started and then just run off without finishing. When i've finished my GCSE's however i have an extra long summer holiday so hopefully i should be able to contribute some more then! I am already involved with building the FriendsOfDebian website over the summer however I also plan to try and get my hands dirty doing some coding (C++) so if anyone knows of any *VERY* simple packages/tasks i'd be interested in having a go. Re: LinuxSignpost vanished?
I should have most content and files in my local svn copy, in case those got lost. Ummm.. I'm unsure of what happened to the files because i didnt actually 'install' the new website, I simply made the drupal theme. Was the data stored in a MySQL database because if so it should be quite easy to re-enter the data into the current database and then make a new page in drupal containing the PHP to retrieve the records. I think the person currently administrating the website is Anders Kringstad Hanssen, whose email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] The best thing to do would probably be to get in touch with him and let him know whats wrong and also let him know that i'd be willing to help with the PHP scripts if he needs it. Re: skolelinux.no website layout broken?
Hi, Does anyone know who is now in charge of the website administration? I will take a look at the site as soon as I can but at the moment i don't have access. Also the Choose Language Page causes ten validation errors which will also need to be fixed. This is just my opinion but would it not be a better idea to have a link to information about the new SkoleLinux 3.0 as opposed to a download of the beta because some users could download it accidently meaning they would be running an insecure and unstable version. I'm not sure when the release for 3.0 is but would there still be time to get together a kind of 'marketing campaign' to inform and persuade potential users? I was thinking along the lines of maybe a couple of PDF brochures expalining the features, key software and other relevant information. If anyone thinks this could be useful please let me know because i would need some content for all of these things as at the moment i know very little about SkoleLinux, however i would be willing to do the majority of the graphic design work if no one else wants to. Would it be possible to reduce the relationship between libcolord2 and colord from recommends to suggests, to avoid pulling in colord by default when installing a package depending on libcolord2 via libgtk-3-0? Does it make sense? I'm somewhat leary of reducing the strength of the dependency for a temporary installability problem; colord meets the requirement of “should be present on all but unusual configurations” when you've got libcolord2 installed. Do you have other ideas how to best handle this installation problem? Since this would seem to be both temporary (until you migrate to systemd) and fairly specific to Debian-Edu's particular installation method, does apt-install allow you to do the equivalent of a “apt install debian-edu-install colord-” to install debian-edu-install while explicitly denying the installation of colord? You could use that to work around the problem until systemd's bedded down. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Hi. :) I'm somewhat leary of reducing the strength of the dependency for a temporary installability problem; colord meets the requirement of “should be present on all but unusual configurations” when you've got libcolord2 installed. When looking at the two packages in isolation, I have no doubt you are right. But when seen from the more distant dependencies (like notification-daemon or any other package depending on libgtk-3-0), I believe it do not make sense to say that colord should be present on all but unusual configuration for all these packages. Do you agree? Yes, for notification-daemon. Since colord is only used in printing support, if we had a way to specify “Recommends: colord (if_package_uses_gtks_printing_symbols)” then I'd certainly use that. My feeling is that a fairly significant number of GTK+ applications use the printing infrastructure, and so, although it's not useful for *all* rdepends of libgtk-3-0, I don't think it's unreasonable for libgtk-3-0 to pull in colord. Since this would seem to be both temporary (until you migrate to systemd) and fairly specific to Debian-Edu's particular installation method, I suspect you misunderstand. Correct :). I'm (obviously) not familiar with the debian-installer infrastructure. This is a really generic problem affecting the Debian installer, not something specific to Debian Edu. When Debian manage to switch to systemd, the issue will be hidden again. So it is not a question of when Debian Edu migrate, it is a question of when we all in Debian migrate. :) I'm not sure that ‘hidden’ is the right word here. The problem is precisely the in-progress transition to systemd. A component that colord depends on (policykit-1) has a dependency (libpam-systemd) that temporarily depends on only systemd-sysv (once cgroupmanager makes it through NEW and the new systemd-shim is uploaded it will be an acceptable alternative). So this should be resolved either by the completion of the systemd transition or the upload of a new libpam-systemd with a systemd-shim alternate dependency. The apt-install tool is the official way to install packages in d-i, and I suspect the issue discovered by Debian Edu also affect others trying to use the official Debian installation system. Anyone trying to use Debian installer with Jessie today to install extra packages (using for example preseeding) will trigger this problem if the package depend on libgtk-3-0. does apt-install allow you to do the equivalent of a “apt install debian-edu-install colord-” to install debian-edu-install while explicitly denying the installation of colord? You could use that to work around the problem until systemd's bedded down. I'll check if this work, but it will only solve it for Debian Edu, not for all the other users of the Debian installation system. If it's significantly inconvenient I can temporarily reduce the Recommends to a Suggests, but I don't think this is the right place to fix the problem. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Package dependencies, recommendations and suggestions are _directed_ graphs: libraries should generally¹ _not_ depend/recommend/suggest binaries, only the other way around. Hm. I've not seen this view expressed before. Do you have any authoritative reference, or is this a synthesis of conversations over time? ¹) only when e.g. a library would *crash* when a binary is unavailable should the library recommend/depend on that binary. What you include into your reasoning is a _chain_ of relationships: GTK+ applications which need colord for most of their usecases should recommend/depend on colord on their own. If that means "most of them" it is not an argument for adding an _reverse_ relationship from the library, but instead an argument for GTK+ library to consider adding the relationship on behalf of its binaries. GTK+ in Jessie also links against libwayland - but libwayland does not declare a relationship to xwayland or weston. Not because Wayland is not yet popular (that would only be a shift from recommending to suggesting), but because a library is _offering_ its functionalities to binaries. I actually don't see why this would be a problem (modulo xwayland not being interesting, and using a virtual wayland-compositor package instead). The library is offering its functionalities to the binary, but *has* no functionality unless its corresponding daemon is running. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
