To: Debian Edu team

Greeting.

Manual Translation Report
=

It seems I finished the major part translations.
(I "Save"d most of them at Weblate this time,
 except LDAP related translations.)

Copyright and history sections still have
no translations a lot; I'll do that later. maybe.

2019-05-13 version will be in almost ja, I hope.

My plan
---

And, my new hardware test finished successfully.

So, next week, I would start building my own testing
Debian Edu env, using the "translated" manual as possible,
to verify the content at once.

Question about gateway using Debian Edu Minimal
===

When I checked the "gateway howto" script, I found this.

$ apt-file show debian-edu-config | grep nat
debian-edu-config: /etc/init.d/enable-nat

I think following the manual to build amd64 gateway
using Debian Edu would makes things easy and simple,
and I'll do in the way;

Even so, here is what I want to ask,
just because I'm curious about it.

Q: What is the pros of using Debian Edu for gateway?
   (except the setting script and the nat-service above)

   some kind of admin such as syslog become more friendly?

Question about (translation of) "Profiles"
==

Q: Should profile names have "translated names"?

   IMHO they should be English, from 2 reasons.
   * It would make "machine or profile" explicit.
   * Considering some locale C ttys and PXE menu.

Q: Should profile names have explicit "profile" post-fixes?

   Say, "Main Server Profile", "LTSP Server Profile".

   It may help users not to be confused about
   "Is this main server means the machine, or profile?"

Regards.

Bug#928756: debian-edu-config: search domain not configured correctly on diskless workstations in subnet00

2019-05-10 Thread Dominik George
Package: debian-edu-config
Version: 2.10.64
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

The following misbehaviour occurs reproducibly in a new installation of
Debian Edu buster.

 1. Install a combined server like normal.
 2. Add a machine on the LTSP network 192.168.0.0/32 as in the screenshot.
 3. Boot that machine as diskless workstation.

If done like that, the /etc/resolv.conf generated at boot by ltsp-init with
the information provided by 08-edu-hostname is missing a search domain entry
(it should probably be subnet00.intern intern). Thus, short hostnames, like
used by the default Firefox start page, are not resolvable.

The configuration of the search domain works perfectly on the main network
10.0.0.0/16.

I only tested on (two different) combined servers, not on a dedicated
terminal server.

Re: About Debian edu manual terminology, etc.

2019-05-10 Thread hoxp18

To: Debian Edu team

I started building my isolated Debian Edu Buster env,
then I got a trouble around gateway.
(I have to start with gateway by personal issue)

It's about NIC name rules. ethN -> enpxxx

I'm not sure but I think Linus said something like "Just code it."

So I attach my "gateway's /etc/network/interfaces generator"

It's a bash script.

Tested on my new gateway Debian Edu Buster Minimal machine,
amd64(Kaby Lake) dual NIC.

It seems any other part works fine.
I only edit /etc/network/interfaces.

I'm now LAN cable shortage and not tested LAN side.
Just did some minimum tests. Apology for that.

Regards.

And this is also a re-sending message, as shown below.

Will it be changed?

no

I tried Debian Edu Buster 2019-05-06 netinst,
Minimal Profile install on my amd64 dual NIC machine
to make it my gateway.

eth0 and eth1 is preconfigured in /etc/network/interfaces,
but they fail when "service networking start".

/sys/class/net shows the NICs as "enp0s31f6" and "enp1s0".

I replaced eth0 and eth1 by them. Then it works.

  WAN side: I confirmed by apt update.
  LAN side: not yet
  NAT: "systemctl status enable-nat.service" shows "active"

Perhaps the manual and scripts should mention about it.

yes, seems so.

What I'm considering now is something like this.

$ find /sys/class/net ! -name net -a ! -name lo -exec basename \[\} \;
enp1s0
enp0s31f6
$ # and some more automated /etc/network/interfaces settings.
# cp new-interfaces /etc/network/interfaces
# service networking stop # and go on

Since I just now have the gateway only,
I have no idea about this issue; I send this mail only for you.

please resend to the list, this is a good question and I wont have time
to reply in the next 24h, sorry. (also for this very brief email!)

Thank you for your quick and precise reply, Holger Levsen.

Please check /etc/default/grub, for the "Minimal" profile it should be:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="net.ifnames=0 quiet"
If it isn't the case, adjust it and run 'update-grub' and reboot.

This makes sure that eth0 and eth1 are kept.

I completely had no idea about that kernel parameter.

I'll check-it and reinstall-the-gateway ASAP.

An alternative is to switch to the new network interfaces naming
scheme: the release-notes for buster explain how to accomplish this.
See  https://ddp-team.pages.debian.net/release-notes/amd64/release-note
s/ch-information.en.html#migrate-interface-names

Unfortunately the Japanese translation of that part of the release-
notes hasn't been updated yet.

Bug#928756: debian-edu-config: search domain not configured correctly on diskless workstations in subnet00

Thanks for providing the screenshot. It's a special case to have fixed
IPs in this subnet. If you untick DNS it is supposed to work.

Please test.

Hi,

But then I don't get a resolvable, fixed hostname, right? That was the
whole idea behind adding the hosts: Have them limited to PXE booting,
but still get readable hostnames in logs and for SSH access.

I will still test without DNS.

/sys/class/net shows the NICs as "enp0s31f6" and "enp1s0".

I replaced eth0 and eth1 by them. Then it works.

Please check /etc/default/grub, for the "Minimal" profile it should
be:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="net.ifnames=0 quiet"
If it isn't the case, adjust it and run 'update-grub' and reboot.

This makes sure that eth0 and eth1 are kept.

Both seems interesting for me. I'll try them as possible as I can.

IMHO, for Debian Edu Buster, keeping ethN scheme seems better,
with making sure about the kernel setting,
because both code and manual seems to keep ethN scheme.

When I build the gateway with plain Debian,
It seems I should switch to the new naming scheme,
using nftables instead of iptables.

BTW the page at ddp-team.pages.debian.net shows only 404 for me.
I guess it it because I'm accessing from Japan or some other auth
and/or firewall related, etc.

I'll read

https://www.debian.org/releases/testing/releasenotes
and the ch-information.en.html#migrate-interface-names page, instead.

Thank you for giving fine information.

Regards.

Main server ja translation on manual : prioritize installer .po

2019-05-10 Thread hoxp18

To: Debian Edu team
CC: Debian ja translators (debian-Japanese ML)

Greeting.

I've considered about "main server" ja candidates
for Debian Edu Buster manual during my translation.

There are a problem of mismatched translation.

Current Situation
=

* installer uses "主サーバ"@ja = "main server"@en

#. Type: multiselect
#. Choices
#. __Choices: Main-Server, Workstation, Roaming-Workstation,
LTSP-Server, Standalone, Minimal

#: ../debian-edu-profile-udeb.templates:2001
msgid "Main Server"
msgstr "主サーバ"

* the manual uses "中心サーバ"@ja != "main server"@en.
  It rather means "center/central server"@en.

  I don't know the reason.
  Some Japanese prefer the manual expression,
  Some other prefer the installer expression.

My suggestion
=

Unify those terms "主サーバー"@ja or "メインサーバー"@ja,
both means "main server"@en; it's just differences between
katakana and kanji.

IMHO "メインサーバー"@ja (= "主サーバ"@ja.installer.po) would be
better, but also think changing installer.po so soon
may make things more complicated.

So, at first I'll attempt to unify them as "主サーバー"@ja in
both installer (and other components) po file(s) and the manual.

(add omitted prolonged sound symbol (I'll call it OPSS) at its tail;
 more natural expression in "2019" Japan)

Reasons
---

* The installer .po has longer history.

* "main server" is only one in Debian Edu system.

* "main server" could have "standby server" for fault tolerance
  and/or load balance purpose in the future (as an option), I hope.

  I guess it may make the Debian Edu system more widely used.

  In that occasion,
  "主サーバー" allows terms like "standby server" translation easier.
  e.g.) "副サーバー"@ja and/or "代替サーバー"@ja.

Comments
-

I've not noticed about installer Japanese display,
since I usually prefer expert mode installation in English.

Summary

* I'll try to create and send a diff patch for installer .po for OPSSs.

  I should make them for the other components .po files, too.

* I'll edit the manual to change "中心サーバ"@ja
  into "主サーバー"@ja.installer.po-with-OPSS-patch.

  The reason is described above. More detail, please read the thread
  https://lists.debian.org/debian-edu/2019/05/msg00020.html

If you have any suggestion, please tell me.

Regards.

[patch] adding omitted prolonged sound symbols.

2019-05-10 Thread hoxp18

To: Debian Edu team
CC: Debian Japanese team

As I send a message about "main server" and issue about
installer.po-manual-ja mismatch and prolonged sound symbols,
I created a patch for installer.po.

It just adds omitted prolonged sound symbols for "server"

Background
==

Japanese veteran IT tech people prefer omitting the trailing
prolonged sound symbols which corresponds to "server"/"printer"'s
"-er" part.

It was useful on limited resolution and/or transfer sizes, etc.

Now, in many cases those omits are no longer recommended, I guess.

 e.g) "サーバ"@ja should now be "サーバー"@ja.

I attach my diff patch.

Regards.
