How to convert a Debian installation to a Debian Edu installation
The student in Trondheim working with Marius to test Skolelinux on Rasberry Pi, asked me how I would transform a pre-installed Debian based machine to a Skolelinux machine. I wrote this script/recipe, that I hope other can find useful. It is untested so far. The only missing parts in this recipe is related to partitioning, and that is too late to do anything about when the machine is already installed, so I just assume there is enough disk space everywhere. :) #!/bin/sh # Fake a Skolelinux installation by running these commands as root. # 0. Install etckeeper, to keep track of changes in /etc/ (optional, #highly recommended) apt-get install -y etckeeper # 1. Add skolelinux related APT sources. cat

The old code is still shipped with the plugin, but disabled. IIRC, uptream lacked manpower to adapt ldif and csv import back then; ldif and xls export were ported. Re: How to convert a Debian installation to a Debian Edu installation
Hi Petter, is there any reason to not include a script like this in some debian-edu package - as long as it is untested in /usr/share/doc//examples to enable people trying carefully first? Kind regards Andreas. The only reason I can think of is that it do not make very much sense to have it there, as it need to be executed before the debian-edu packages are installed. But it do no harm to put it there either, so why not. :) I'll add it, and extend it to select desktop type and run tasksel non-interactively with the diverts in place. -- Happy hacking Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: [debian-edu-commits] r80027 - branches/wheezy/debian-edu-config/share/debian-edu-config/tools
Very glad to get comment on the recipe/example. :) [Holger Levsen] > I think this is wrong, if language is not set this might well be > because the user is happy with english. Switching her to Bokmal is > really *not* nice in this case. Well, it is just an example. The same could be said about PROFILE=Workstation. :) I Wanted an example with both LANG and LANGUAGE set to show what they are used for. I wrote the code like that because as far as I know, LANG will almost always be set. English installation with the default values will end up with LANG=en_US.UTF-8, not LANG="". But the example values can be in comments, and do not have to be in the code, so we can change the logic to one that make more sense. > If langugae is not set, it's not set. Where's the problem. Only testing can tell. :) I suspect some of our scripts will be surprised if LANG is unset, but am not sure. -- Happy hacking Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". My draft name is based on perl, which uses 'bless' to assign object class to variables. I guess it should have been bless-debian-edu. :) Any better suggestions than convert-debian2debian-edu and bless-debian(-edu)? If not, I'll rename to Holgers idea and make the script part of the package. Btw, I discovered that my initial recipe was based on a misunderstanding on how tasksel tests decide the Debian Edu profile. I thought it used /etc/debian-edu/config like cfengine, but it is using debconf values instead. The consequence was that tasks had to be selected manually in tasksel. The svn script contain a fix for this. I'm testing the script in a chroot as we speek, and it seem to work fine. -- Happy hacking Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Hi, then I think it's sensible to set it to English if its not set. Despite the Norwegian roots :-) cheers, Holger signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

This seem like the wrong approach for two reasons. First of all because you introduce another way to do this, and we end up with two methods, one in KDE and one in LXDE. And secondly, the menu entry in KDE only show up in networked profiles (thus not in the Standalone profile) because we put the menu entry in debian-edu-config/share/debian-edu/networked-kde3/share/applications/pwdchange.de +sktop. Can you figure out a way to get the same effect on LXDE, and preferably using the same method on KDE and LXDE? Perhaps dropping out meny entry from debian-edu-config and pulling in the gosa-desktop package in the networked task is an idea? -- Happy hacking Petter Reinholdtsen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-edu-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
