you have to belong to students or teachers group. If not, a fast hack to
work as root is removing the checking
at /etc/destkop-profiles/debian-edu-menu.listing to make it work. Don't
forget to execute /usr/bin/update-profile-cache before login to force
desktop-profiles update it.

Ah, right. Added root as a member to students, and got the new menu.
The "lost and found" entries are gone now. Got the 'educational' menu
up, and it look god. It is missing translations to norwegian bokmål,
though. That is an issue we need to address.

Perhaps we should have a way to activate it by default for all users
on a host, by adding the host into a netgroup? I suspect it is a good
idea for larger installations.

Happy hacking,

Ahh, my fault - this was not intended. But if you change this please

is no guarantee that I might mistakenly override your changes by current
content of SVN ...

As you can read on http://wiki.debian.org/DebianEdu

DebianEdu is a Debian project to make the best distribution for
educational purposes.

Skolelinux is the name of a CustomDebianDistribution which is produced
by the DebianEdu project.

So if my understanding of the two sentences above is correct, the
skolelinux logo should be the right one here.

It seems like nitpicking - but we oftenly stumbled upon this case
so I at least want to make you aware that you are linking to another
page that has a contradictory definition:

   http://wiki.debian.org/CustomDebian

says:

Custom Debian Distribution (CDD): a _SUBSET_ of Debian that is configured
to support a particular target group out-of-the-box.

SkoleLinux is not (yet) a subset of Debian and thus there are conflicting
opinions on this. I personally have a quite pragmatic point of view and
just would like to support what finally helps users. The point is that
the term Custom Debian Distribution is missunderstood to estimated 80%
because it is siumply misnamed and does not express what it really is -
just 100% included in Debian. To avoid further watering down this term
I try to feature this careful kind of pickyness and would like to see a
*real* decision instead of just having you or me just putting our
favourite image on top of the page.

Kind regards

Andreas.

What users?

Here are some possible answers:

  1) Users of computers (like Linux and Windows)
  2) Users of Linux distros (like Debian, Skolelinux and Ubuntu)
  3) Users of the Debian distro (maybe mixed with outside stuff)
  4) Users of only the Debian distro (maybe through CDDs)

I guess you can be _either_ pragmatic and choose 3) _or_ pedantic and
choose 4) but not both. Doing both doesn't make sense to me, but please
educate me.

I do not want to discuss this question of live here.
I thought there was a mistake / failure in your confs and wanted
silently correct that. But I failed doing it because of having no
rights to do so.

So, if there should be a picture / logo or whatever graphical stuff on
that page configured in that config file, it has to be a valid url so
that it can show up.

Thats my conclusion of this thread, hopefully ending up here now, as you
are right saying that it's like nitpicking. ;-)

No, I do absolutely not think that there is a conflict between
Debian and Skolelinux. Rather the contrary because the Skolelinux
have understood that it makes no sense to fork Debian and try to
integrate but did not really finished this process. I just wrote
that the definitions stated on the two wiki pages are conflicting
that means at least one of this pages has to be fixed - IMHO the
DebianEdu page.

Whoops. Right.

Sorry for twisting way beyond sanity. That was not intentional, I was

I agree that the conflict you refer to is on multiple definitions on

Do you agree that the conflict is on the definition of CDD (your subject

Do I understand you correctly that you do not care much for that

Yes. In my eyes Debian Edu is the Debian internal part (and as such
can be called CDD) and SkoleLinux took over the great work to add what
is missing to turn it into a product that has proven very useful in

Yes. The visitor should get the information that there is a huge
bunch of educational software inside Debian which is properly sorted
into categories. The optimal situation would be if all descriptions
are translated. If the visitor just has understand this and is convinced
that Debian provides helpful stuff for his school we might come to
the nitpicking later ...

SkoleLinux was formerly a Debian derivative but joined forces with
Debian Edu and is in process of integrating 100% into Debian
(CDD in development). When this process started SkoleLinux people
did a main part of the famous Debian Installer and other stuff
which made Debian much more flexible which shows how much parties
could profit from each other. It is planed that in Lenny+1 will
SkoleLinux will be 100% and thus becoming identical with Debian Edu.

At least this is _my_ perception of this issue.

I see that this perception has spread, but I am not convinced it make
any sense. Debian Edu was a project originating in France to create a
Debian based distro for schools, and Skolelinux was a similar project
originating in Norway with the same goal. The two projects merged,
and can now be considered two names for the same project. :)

To me, both names represent the same, and any can be used where the
other would fit.

So Debian Edu / Skolelinux both is _both_ a CDD _and_ a CDD in

What SVN?
I have already access to alioth.debian.org.
But that config files can only be changed by a guy called tille ;-)

Who decided to choose the skole tux image?
I would like to see a right logo there and not a tux. ;-)

Off cdd project.

Or members of group cdd (at least if I not set permissions wrong).
All the config files are at

svn://svn.debian.org/cdd/cdd/trunk/webtools/webconf

even if there is no automatic process to copy this to the location
where the executable code is situated

/srv/alioth.debian.org/chroot/home/groups/cdd/webtools

this is one of the next steps to do. So joining the cdd group
is usefull to access both.

Well, there was no such thing like a 'decision'. I just putted
something there which I felt apropriate.

Yes, and I wonder whether a SkoleLinux logo is really "the" right
logo. I feel not passionate about this but the pages show the part
of Debian internal packages and is perhaps lacking some stuff
SkoleLinux is adding. So it is actually not a real SkoleLinux
page ithat's why I wonder whether not mentioning Debian-Edu in the logo
is apropriate. That's why I would like to suggest to discuss
the issue (and as I said we have some time to do so until the
page gets update the next time).

Kind regards

 Andreas.

It is already installed, it seemed. How can I verify that it is
activated? I log in as user root.

I'm not totally with you on this: sugar is good for primary schools, but
it's too childish for secondary schools. OTOH sugar is good when you
have a not too big number of users concurrently. Imagine my secondary
schools with 400 or 600 computers on, trying to show in the screen the
buddies of all the users.

I do think we must re-think the educational desktop. Current desktop is
totally office-oriented. In my experience, I've seen teachers that after
four years of "using" the computers have never seen most of the things
contained in the menus. They only click on the apps or icons that are one
click (or two, no more) away. The menu branch that opens from the lower
(or upper pannel) and has a lot of branches is ok for people used to
computers and other non-free systems, they are used to menus with
several levels of submenus. For newcomers, they just ignore most of that
stuff. I've used linpus on an Acer One and I like it, also the Desktop
we did for primary schools was pretty succesful because ther was some
animated bars with the main apps one click away. I do think that if we
use the computers to teach computing, current desktop is ok, but if we
use computers for the students to learn everything, current desktop is
not the best option.
Obviously, I'd like to get more feedback about this, because I'm
planning to spend some time this summer working on new ideas for the
desktop.

Regards.
