Re: CD Debian Lenny
Art Grandi wrote: Hi! I would like to acquire a DVD version of Debian Lenny, in order to try recovering an ibook G3 Dual (M6497). I have absolutely no idea of what "ibook G3 Dual (M6497)" states and/or implies. However I would suggest http://cdimage.debian.org/mirror/cdimage/archive/ as a starting point. CAn you help me in any way? Do you know of any other Linux version that might fit this computer, which you would recommend ? Answers to some questions ;/ What processor? How fast? Available memory? Mass storage? Suggestions: 1. find a local LUG (Linux Users Group) 2. Assuming your machine supports booting from a CD/DVD, browse https://www.debian.org/CD/vendors/ 3. Order a selection of "Live CD's" matching your CPU (I've found cost to be ~5 USD each (+ possible shipping charge) I intend to use this machine on the road, mostly for writing documents and emails, and editing simple recordings of my guitar. nice day for all of you that do such a nice work to help people around the world, art grandi HTH
Re: new iso download
Sapa Holliday wrote: Hi I'm sorry to bother you. I have been using other Linux versions for a couple of years, I have recently upgraded my elementary os from Luna to Freya which is just no good for me. So I have searched and evaluated and decided I want Debian gnome flavour. I have used BitTorrent to download debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-gnome-desktop.iso and I used the md5sum to get a checksum of 0f3ec5bde4d3bb67ee44ecf862bce071 which doesn't seem to be on any of the lists I've found so far by searching which isn't good, I want an authentic distro I can't find anywhere to verify this checksum or any place to direct my (elementary) terminal to look to verify it. I'd be less concerned if it hadn't been a torrent download. When I've downloaded other iso's in the past I downloaded a checksum file, or a link to one, to use in terminal to verify. Is there somewhere to do this for this distro? Yours hopefully Sapa Short answer: it checks ;) Longer answers: How can you check? Start at http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/ having 2 relevant links 8.2.0-live/ [http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/8.2.0-live/] current-live/ [http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current-live/] [I point this out in case you are not familiar with Debian's pattern of referencing releases. You could refer to "Current" or "Jessie" or "8.0.2", the later being the least ambiguous.] Following the 1st link iso-hybrid/ [http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/8.2.0-live/amd64/iso-hybrid/] tells all. How did I get there? I couldn't remember the link but I did recall how things were laid out. My Google search term (with the quotation marks was: "debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-gnome-desktop" site:debian.org As the first hit had "current" URL, I followed its directory tree back to an absolute rather than relative reference. For future reference I suggest bookmarking the to of the tree -- http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/ .

Re: Copying repository for offline install
On 07/02/2017 05:41 AM, Charles Chambers wrote: I'm trying an offline install with DVD media. Exactly which media? Where/how did you get it? When an offline install gets to the stage where it is copying the install media's package list(s) to the target computer - just before package selection - and the user needs to change shuffle the DVD, the DVD drive door is still locked and won't open. I don't follow your description of when the problem occurs. All my routine installs since Squeeze have been prom purchased DVD sets as I have limited bandwidth. I have done Stretch installs with netinst during pre-release and later with DVD set with no problems. You have to answer"yes" to the first scan and let it fail in order to unlock the DVD drive. It then "forgets" the first DVD and keeps prompting you for it at the end of that stage of the install.

Re: How Do You Create ISOs?
I believe debian-u...@lists.debian.org would be more fruitful for your underlying goal(s). Ricardo Romanach wrote: To whom it may concern in the Debian team, I have a question about creating ISOs. I am currently attempting to create an ISO file from an existing Debian 11 installation. I want to do this in order to more easily share this customized copy with a few friends. *SNIP* * Please let me know how you think I should approach this problem of creating an ISO from an existing installed system and writing it to a disk. Any ISO expertise would be greatly appreciated! I thought it would be a good idea to directly ask those involved with ISO creation on the Debian team! I've seen discussion of custom "Live CD's". Might that serve your underlying purpose? HTH Thanks, Ricardo Romanach
