in the installer environment. There aren't any apt-install commands
that would cause a problem similar to the rdnssd one. So I don't
think that's necessary.

Bug#672662: cdimage.debian.org: "gnome-screesnaver" starts at livecd boot

2015-08-29 Thread Michael Gilbert
control: severity -1 serious

Linux Luddites did a review of jessie [0] where they ran into this
when testing the live cd images. They got locked out once the
screensaver kicked in since no password had yet been configured.

Best wishes,
Mike

That's a great start. However, Patrick is advocating images that
autodetect and install drivers/packages for non-free hardware as well
(not just firmware). That could probably be solved straightforwardly
if someone were to just go ahead implement it; perhaps by someone
already expressing interest in it???

BTW, where are the non-free images at? They don't appear to be
available from cdimage.debian.org [0] or from the debian-installer page.

Best wishes,
Mike

What about supporting only the smaller/lighter desktop environments
(maybe even making one of the the default environment)? Then there
wouldn't be the need for multiple CD #1's. Anyone that wants
gnome/kde after installation will need to grab those from the mirrors
(or use DVD or greater media).

Mike

The default has no bearing whatsoever on whether well-connected users
can or can't install one of the shiny desktops if they so choose.

This looks pretty awesome.

Those options aren't very understandable to users as yet unfamiliar
with open source desktops. I would like to suggest (stuff in
parenthesis not meant to be shown)

  [*] Desktop environment
  [ ] ... Minimal Desktop (task-xfce-desktop --no-install-recommends)
  [*] ... Standard/default Desktop (task-xfce-desktop)
  [ ] ... Comprehensive Desktop (task-gnome-desktop)

This excludes kde, but it's not clear to me how to describe the
difference between kde and gnome succinctly without using the
(meaningless to some users) acronyms.

A note about Minimal Desktop, task-xfce-desktop is about 1500 MB
installed with a lot of stuff I don't really want or need. So, at
least on my machines, I always unselect Desktop Environment during
installation, then later "apt-get install task-xfce-desktop
--no-install-recommends", which results in about a 400 MB installation
and more like 150 MB download. I think a lot of users prefer this
kind of minimalism, so it would be nice to make that easily available.

Best wishes,
Mike
