I think that when we have the menu it's even better to let the user to
choice instead of setting it for him.

Ack.

Robert, could you take a look at it?

Issue: I see "Graphical automated insta".

Other comments: basically I don't like it.
Mainly because we're going to be confusing regular users with something like
automated install. And we'll probably see more users using the export mode
when they don't need it.

Also, for multiarch images I see the menu becoming way too long (I feel it's
already too long with 9 options for your netinst).

If we really do want this, I think it should be reordered:
Normal install
Normal install (graphical)
Expert install
Expert install (graphical)
...

What I'd like to see is just the basic choices selectable from the menu, and
a prompt for advanced usage. One option to do this could be:
Normal install
Normal install (graphical)
Rescue mode
Rescue mode (graphical)
Other options and help

Cheers,
FJP

It would also be nice to have a function key that returns the user to the
vesa menu (if possible).

More help would be ... helpful :-)

2008-04-13 Thread Steve McIntyre
Hi folks,

As you might have seen elsewhere, some damn fools seem to have elected
me to be DPL for the next year. :-)

This does mean that I'm probably not going to have quite so much time
for some of the tasks I'm doing right now, such as watching the
daily and weekly CD and DVD builds. Most of the time, they work just
fine. But every now and then they do need looking at and small tweaks
made to:

 * the debian-cd code to keep up with changes in the archive
 * configuration on farbror (the CD build machine in Sweden)

There are also already some places where I've not had time to do
everything I want, including:

 * cleanups and bugfixes in the existing code
 * integrating Martin Ferrari's automated image testing tool
(pancutan) that he developed last year during the Summer of Code
 * documentation on how things work (the debian-cd code AND Debian CDs
   in general)

and I'm unhappy about that already.

So, who would like to step up and help? I'd love to talk/walk other
people through the code. We're on the road to the Lenny release at
this point, so I'm hoping sooner rather than later.

Talk to me!

Last month syslinux got submenu support for vesamenu, so its now doable..

Here's an example image with menu items for text and gtk:
http://kitenet.net/~joey/tmp/mini.iso

Here's an example image with the full set of possible options:
http://kitenet.net/~joey/tmp/minifakemulti.iso

(only the i386 text d-i options will really boot in these hacked
together images)

The best thing I've been able to come up with is ctrl-alt-del to get
back to the menu.

You can define a boot target that restarts the vesa menu, but I ran into
some bugs when doing it, and requring people type "menu" to get back to
the menu is not very intuitive.
