Aaargh - Jigdo MISSING FILES for Etch Weekly Build DVD #3

2007-02-11 Thread Doug

I'm working on:
ftp://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/weekly-builds/i386/jigdo-dvd/debian-tes
ting-i386-DVD-3.jigdo

I've got the first two DVD image after MUCH trial and error with Jigdo -
it's like an easter egg hunt trying to find a mirror that can complete
the image.

For DVD #3, I'm having trouble finding a mirror for these files:

postgresql-8.1/libpgtypes2_8.1.6-1_i386.deb:
postgresql-8.1/libecpg5_8.1.6-1_i386.deb:
postgresql-7.4/postgresql-server-dev-7.4_7.4.15-1_all.deb:
postgresql-8.1/libecpg-compat2_8.1.6-1_i386.deb:
postgresql-8.1/libecpg-dev_8.1.6-1_i386.deb:

Can someone let me know a mirror that has these or "fix" them if
necessary? I'm going to have to download the full DVD if I can't find
these few pest files.

Thanks,
Doug

Re: Aaargh - Jigdo MISSING FILES for Etch Weekly Build DVD #3

2007-02-11 Thread Doug

Ok, I found them on a quiet little mirror in France.

But, somehow another one creeped in. I cannot find..

.../cdimage/snapshot/Debian/pool/main/k/kernel-patch-openvz/kernel-patch-o
penvz_028test007.1d1_all.deb

The name of this file "028test007" makes me think this file is going to be
hard to locate.

HELP!?!
Doug

http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/01/30/debian/pool/main/k/kernel-patch-openvz/kernel-patch-openvz_028test007.1d1_all.deb

snapshot.d.n rocks! :-)
Still, actually this problem should not happen as jigdo already has a
built-in fallback mechanism for fetching these problematic packages. :-/

Thanks for that link. I'll try it ASAP.

I'm a debian noob, so when I restart jigdo, what part of that URL should I
give it to search? I'm guessing this part:
   http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/01/30/debian/

I'm not sure why jigdo fails a lot with missing files. It says it's trying
alternate sources, but eventually it just can't find them. If it helps, I'm
running the windoze binary on XP. For DVD#1 I needed to "guess" about 3
different mirrors. For DVD#2, it took a while to find all the mirrors needed.
And for DVD#3, well I'm going to run off and try this one. :P

Thanks,
Doug.

Re: Aaargh - Jigdo MISSING FILES for Etch Weekly Build DVD #3

2007-02-11 Thread Doug
Richard, yo da man! :P

I snarfed that last sneaky file from snapshot, and I got my final DVD#3 image
(which now has a good MD5). YAY! I'll add that spiffy snapshot URL to my
big-list-of-all-things-debian-for-noobs.

I suspect that maybe the Windows flavor of jigdo may not be as resiliant to
missing files as perhaps the linux flavor. Next time, I'll try to use Jigdo
from Debian and see how that goes.

Oh, here's a quicky noob question: If I have all three weekly build DVDs for
Etch, and there's a future weekly build I want to update to, I don't have to
get all three DVD images again do I? Is there some way I can use my existing
DVD images and have jigdo just update the changed files?

Thanks again!
Doug.

That /might/ work, but the easiest way IMHO is to download the file
yourself and to put it in the temporary directory created by jigdo. Jigdo
will find it there by itself.

Actually, the mechanism of an alternate source tends to work quite well,
but in the case of the images you're trying to download, the problem is
that the images change every week. Once a new week's "edition" of the
images is put on the server, the old alternate source (a backup of the
packages) is also removed, so things tend to break.
This could be fixed by keeping the old backup directory a little longer,
e.g. 2 weeks in total.

BTW, *please* do not enter snapshot.debian.net as your primary Debian
mirror from the beginning! Use your nearest mirror first and only switch
there to get the remaining files. That server does not have the resources
for the download of lots of DVD images...

Cheers,

  Richard

Ok well, you have a cdrom: line with contrib in it, so the installer did
the right thing in adding the security.debian.org contrib lines.

OTOH, it's sorta weird that the cdrom had a contrib component on it.
Apparently for some reason our netinst includes msttcorefonts which is
in contrib.

Ok, a lot of unncessary stuff including this is getting pulled onto the
netinst due to debian-cd's annoying behavior of satisfying every
alternative in orded dependencies. cdebconf depends on the whole
gtk/fontconfig toolchain, which has an ored dependency that includes
msttcorefonts.

cdebconf is supposed to be in the exclusion list, but debian-cd seems to
be broken now. Due to recent changes it first adds everything, including
all package deps. Then it excludes packages (but not their deps). This
is why we're getting msttcorefonts, and the whole fontconfig/gtk chain
on the netinst, which is currently 160 mb (30 mb larger than it should
be).

I heard from jigdo's author that it behaves just the same under Linux and
Windows, so using it under Windows shouldn't be a problem! :-)

Yes, this is possible; see the jigdo HOWTO:

Ahh, didn't know I could do that. Added to my list.

I see. I guess the newer stuff is so fresh it really hasn't had a chance to
replicate to all the mirrors. The older stuff is probably everywhere.

No problem. I understand the need to distribute the bandwidth all over.
