Accessibility of official jigdo files for Sarge

2003-07-24 Thread John Winters
Hi all,

I sell (amongst lots of other things) CDs of Debian Woody and testing
snapshots of Sarge. Currently it appears that the only way one can
download the official .jigdo files for unofficial Sarge CDs (!) is by
means of http from gluck.debian.org. This is inefficient, particularly
if one wants to keep doing it. Is there any way they could be made
available by rsync?

Cheers,
John

I don't get it. The debian-installer stuff is neatly all listed in the
tasks/debian-installer file -- and yet the above ones are missing.

I've ripped out kernel-source-* for testing purposes, removed the grossly
huge xserver-xfree86-dbg, syslinux, aspell-* packages, and fixed a few
obvious bugs (usually renamed or removed packages), and there really should
be space both for all these things on the CD.

The second CD is even more reshuffled, but it seems that has to do with
the change to prefer all main packages over contrib. I guess I can fix that,
but it should have no effect on the above problems...

Should this "current" link be changed into a "stable" and a "testing"
link for the current stable and testing versions?

Keeping a few revisions of old jigdos around is probably considered a good
idea, at least for stable revisions. This is reflected in the current
state of farbror.acc.umu.se.

If this is interesting I could add this to the script with the option of
generating isos based on the stable and/or testing links. The downside is
that with options it won't be an exact mirror of the data on cdimage.d.o.

And regarding getting data to farbror, perhaps it would be valuable to get
testing snapshots out and circulating among mirrors? If someone could give
me a private (or public) rsync module on gluck I could start mirroring a
bit.

Oh, bleh,

CD 1 filled with 541058198 bytes ... (limit was 55500)
CD 2 filled with 637562572 bytes ... (limit was 639631360)

Serves me right for using stupid README file defaults like
SIZELIMIT1=55500 and not paying attention.

IMHO, rsync is not more efficient for mirroring .jigdo/.template files than
http/ftp, because all the data is gzipped. Some more mirrors for the images
on gluck would still be nice, though.

Are you sure they did not end up in the image? It is conceivable that for
some reason, they just weren't picked up by jigdo-file, so they might be in
the image, but not listed in the .jigdo file.

(Mind you, jigdo-file /ought/ to have picked them up, just don't take the
list in the .jigdo as authoritative.)

Have a look at the appropriate .jigdo files with zless. (Or under Windows,
rename the .jigdo into .txt.gz and then unpack the file with WinZip.)

So they are! Funny, I could have sworn the .template files used to be
text. Presumably my fractured imagination.

Further suggestion then - could an un-gzipped version be made available
by rsync *only*. The changes from week to week can only be small and it
would make sense to rsync the differences and re-build the files rather
than re-download what can be a very big file. (Some of the later ones
from fsn.hu have been 90M for just one (gzipped) .template file.)

(limit was 639631360)
...

Serves me right for using stupid README file defaults like
SIZELIMIT1=55500 and not paying attention.

I guess I should mention that I didn't solve this. Any hints would be
welcome.

IMHO, rsync is not more efficient for mirroring .jigdo/.template files than
http/ftp, because all the data is gzipped. Some more mirrors for the images
on gluck would still be nice, though.

Unofficial DVD .jigdo files, take 2

2003-07-24 Thread Richard Atterer
Now located at

  http://farbror.acc.umu.se/debian-cd-test/

They include non-US this time. Additionally, I tried all arches and src.
However, it seems something went wrong, the template files are a bit too
large. Additionally, some arches do not seem to have worked. Any clues
welcome! :)

Cheers,

Are you sure they did not end up in the image? It is conceivable that for
some reason, they just weren't picked up by jigdo-file, so they might be in
the image, but not listed in the .jigdo file.

(Mind you, jigdo-file /ought/ to have picked them up, just don't take the
list in the .jigdo as authoritative.)

Have a look at the appropriate .jigdo files with zless. (Or under Windows,
rename the .jigdo into .txt.gz and then unpack the file with WinZip.)

How about "Press any key if you want boot from CD" for about 3
seconds ???

This is IMHO good function, if I forget CD media in machine with bios setting
for boot from cd-rom first - if I really need boot from cd, then i press
some key ...

i need postfix on first cd (now missing on woody first cd)
