If the mini-HOWTO can't help you out, please ask Debian's CD Team for

Ehm... I did better yesterday :-)
See:
https://portal.fsn.hu/english/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=34

Have you seen my dc2? It can do the update iso-s, and lot more.
I just ask that: You want to create N CDs, where N means number of supported
archs by woody, or want just one CDset, where it may contain more CDs, but
the whole set contain all update, for all arch's?
If you decided that, I can wrote a new module to dc2, and you can generate
the update set with that. And the set may contain the security updates, wich
was released since the release of 3.0r1, and may contain the proposed
updates, etc. which joey didn't want. (And of course, It would contain these
stuff for all archs) But I think that, if I create a CD, which contain the
updates from r0 to r1, the security updates, and the proposed updates, and
after apt-cdrom add makes a line like this:
deb cdrom[Obfuscated Debian Update CDROM]/ woody r0ton/main r0ton/contrib secup/main
secup/contrib propud/main propud/contrib
then the user can remove those propud sections, but if the CD doesn't
contain the proposed updates at all, then the user haven't chance to use
them.

Completely different issue: How should the update CDs be mirrored?
IMHO it'd be useful if they were distributed in the same directory as
the full ISO files on raff. That way, there is no need for an extra
list of "update CD mirrors", and no confusion about differing
directory structures on different mirrors.

What input did you give to jigdo-lite, and what error messages did it
print before the final "found 0" message? Looks like you entered the
wrong thing when asked for the URL of the Debian/non-US mirror.

Yes. But instead I'd say, it has no documentation :-)
One of my students said that, he would write real documentation about it.
But he would do this in hungarian. So I decided that, I'll try to find
another student, who would translate it to english :-)
And than I have more time to develop this stuff :-)

Patch for small cd images and producing them officially?

2002-12-19 Thread Santiago Garcia Mantinan
Hi!

I've been working on a patch to make debian-cd be able to build small cd
images. I think this one does it.

The following patch produces images just with:

1-debian-installer and the doc
2-debian-installer, files necesary for a basic install and the doc

I have tested it both here at home and at gluck, so if nobody objects to the
code I will commit it.

I could put this into production in gluck if we like it, but there are some
issues:

First of all, what do we want to build, the smaller ones 45 Mb right now,
or the installable from cd ones, 83 Mb.

Second but not least, there are several problems with the dependencies on
d-i:

The first one is that the packages depend on libc6, which causes libc6
to go into the cds wich means at least more than 3 megs of unneeded
oversize, the packages depend on libc6 2.3.1 and we are putting on the cds
version 2.2.5.

Second, there are some d-i udeb packages that won't be installed due to
missing dependencies, these missing depends are libparted1.6-0 and
libdebian-installer3 which are on sid but are not udebs on d-i repository.
The packages that depend on them and that don't go on the cd are:
anna, autopartkit, choose-mirror, ethdetect, main-menu, net-retriever,
netcfg-dhcp and netcfg-static.

I can fix this last problem adding those packages from sid, but I really
believe that that is not the way to go. I believe that this should be fixed
by making udebs of those packages with the right dependencies. As for the
dependency on libc6, that should also be fixed on d-i packages.

Once we have this fixed we can go to the first question, the medium cds or
the smaller ones? and then put them into production, but I really don't
think that they should be put into production before this problems being
solved.

Comments on all this?

I'd like to know other people opinions on this, mostly the Release
Manager's, but also others.

Well, guess that is all, questions will also be accepted ;-)

Regards...

frankly i don't see the point in the proliferation of different ISO formats
from a mirror point of view. i'd prefer to see official debian cd images as:

o a single "lightweight" netinst iso per architecture

- allows end users to get a base debian install up and grab further
  stuff from their closest mirror

o a single "complete" full set per architecture.

- allows cd production people, user groups and users to get a
  complete debian project on cd.

it appears there is enough demand for an "upgrade" set of ISO images though
i am hoping this might be a single ISO per architecture at most. if it is
more than one ISO then the usefulness of an upgrade ISO seems to be reduced
to me.

while jigdo appears to be gaining in use, from the feedback i've personally
received (as an ISO mirror) and from this list there appears to be a solid
demand to continue to produce official iso images and make them available
for download via FTP/HTTP/RSYNC.

i'm not qualified to comment on the cd creation process etc - this is just
some observations as a mirror maintainer try to deal with disk space
requirements as debian grows.

3.0_r0 is already > 20G of disk.

i imagine 3.0_r1 is going to be > 25G once you start looking at an
update iso per architecture, netinst iso per architecture..

we usually try and keep at least one complete revision of iso images
from a previous release but it appears we won't be able to do that
with the upcoming 3.0r1 release :-/

-jason

of the mini-HOWTO here: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/Debian-Jigdo/

If the mini-HOWTO can't help you out, please ask Debian's CD Team for
advice on this address: debian-cd@lists.debian.org - I have CC'ed this
mail to them.

(And of course, It would contain these
stuff for all archs) But I think that, if I create a CD, which contain the
updates from r0 to r1, the security updates, and the proposed updates, and
after apt-cdrom add makes a line like this:
deb cdrom[Obfuscated Debian Update CDROM]/ woody r0ton/main r0ton/contrib
secup/main secup/contrib propud/main propud/contrib
then the user can remove those propud sections, but if the CD doesn't
contain the proposed updates at all, then the user haven't chance to use

BTW.: If you saw the Makefile, rules-extra.mak and rules-extra-woody.mak
files, you can find many english comments about the stuff, try to find the
analization there.

Regards...

Cool, this will _finally_ make it possible for us to have official
netinst images. They've been missed.

Why not both?

libc-udeb instead of libc6 (>= 2.3.1-5)

yay. it also means i guess that some of us don't have to maintain

frankly i don't see the point in the proliferation of different ISO formats
from a mirror point of view. i'd prefer to see official debian cd images as:

o a single "lightweight" netinst iso per architecture
