Test of el-torito and isolinux multiboot for CD

2002-04-08 Thread Thorsten Roggendorf

Hi,

I did not test your multiboot system, and - apologies - I won't have
time to do so. However, I installed woody on a pentium 4 system a couple
of months ago. It had an Asus P4B - Board. I imagine these boards will
be pretty common now and you might receive some feedback about it. These
boards have a very annoying bios bug that makes booting Linux quite a
feat.

The following is an e-mail exchange I had with somebody about the
problem. Perhaps you find it helpful (if you don't decide to skip these
stupid boards which would sympathize with ...):

Hi Thorsten,

Yes, I have worked around the problem. I won't get into the details
of why the failure occurs, but it is definitely a BIOS bug. If you
want the details, just let me know.

The workaround requires that you be able to build a kernel on another
machine. I'm not certain I remember everything. Unfortunately, I
didn't keep my scratch notes:(

Build a kernel specific to the P4B machine. Make sure the kernel
includes support for FAT -- not as a module. You need FAT support so
the installation program can read the Debian rescue.bin disk, or else
it stops the installation cold. It seems like there was another
kernel config that needed to be set, but I'm not sure. Make sure
support for your NIC is compiled into the kernel, also.

dd your new kernel image to the floppy. Then rdev it as follows:

rdev /dev/fd0 /dev/fd0
rdev -r /dev/fd0 49152

The floppy should be ready to go. Insert it, cross your fingers and
boot up. It will ask for the root disk and after that everything
proceeds as if normal.

Good luck. If you run into snags, let me know. I'll try to help as
much as possible.

cya
Rob

BTW: When you get a chance, complain to ASUS about the buggy BIOS. I
did and also politely requested they become more open source friendly.

Test of el-torito and isolinux multiboot for CD

2002-04-08 Thread Raphael Hertzog

Hi,

we are considering adding the possibility to boot different flavors
of the kernel from the same CD (the first) and we have different
means of achieving that. Each has its pros and cons. We need to know
if they do work on your machine ... because it depends of the BIOS and
it may not work on old machines. (All of this is for the i386 arch
only.)

So we provide two ISO images and we expect you to grab them, burn CD
with them and try to boot on them (if you wish, you can also install
Debian woody with them ... but the test is mainly about the boot
procedure).

Please send the feedback (ie the answers to the questions included in
this mail) to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (reply-to is set).

What is your computer (cpu, how old is it ...) ?

What is your BIOS (name and version) ?

First method : multiboot with el-torito
---

Grab the image from one of these links :
http://i386-multiboot.trasno.net/woody-i386-1.raw
ftp://i386-multiboot.trasno.net/unofficial-debian-cds/woody-i386-multiboot/woody-i386-1.raw
rsync://i386-multiboot.trasno.net/unofficial-debian-cds/woody-i386-multiboot/woody-i386-1.raw

Filesize: 625606656 bytes
MD5SUM: 253c012ba909075cfe9404117035fcc0

Once you boot on it, you should get a menu proposing 4 choices. First
is "idepci" flavor, second is "compact" flavor, third is "bf2.4" flavor
and fourth is the default "vanilla" flavor. You may not see the names of
the flavor ... but just numbers. If the bios doesn't support the
multiboot it may still boot the first flavor by default.

Are you able to boot on the CD ?
If yes do you see a menu ?
If yes what does your menu look like ?
If you can't boot on the CD, explain what is happening (booting on the
harddisk, locking, ...).

Second method : multiboot with isolinux
---

Grab the image in one of those sites :
http://www.phy.olemiss.edu/debian-cd/woody-i386-1.raw
http://people.debian.org/~hertzog/debian-cd/woody-isolinux.iso

Filesize: 193921024 bytes
MD5SUM: f3126f5f0e54777d0fdabde5735a90be

Once you boot on it, you should see a "boot:" prompt typical of syslinux.
You can type "linux" (or "idepci"), "bf24", "compact" or "vanilla". You
will boot on the corresponding flavor of course. You may also push F3 to get
more information about the available flavors.

Are you able to boot on the CD ?
Do you see the prompt ?
If no, what is happening ?

Feel free to provide more information if you think that it's
worthwhile.

Thanks for your help !

PS: More information about the second (isolinux) image is available at :

several things:
1) Marvellous package-upgrade system so once it's installed it's extrememly
easy to install security upgrades or just upgrade generally

2) Not dependent on any one company or country

3) Support for lots of different CPUs (but you probably have a PC and don't
care about that)

4) Support for lots of languages (but you probably speak english and don't
care much about that)

5) Biggest collection of software of any distribution (8 CDs-worth now)

6) Openness of development - the whole process is exposed to the world so you
can see how it works and join in if you like

> 2. Can I try it out without screwing up my Win98SE?

I believe so, but I don't really know much about it. Try the install
documentation for info on how to install it so it dual-boots. Section 4.7 on
this page is relevant:
http://www.uk.debian.org/releases/stable/i386/ch-partitioning.en.html

There are various ways of doing this, like installing debian on a second HD
if you have one, partitioning a new drive and installing both windows and
Debian on it, or the above info on installing onto an existing drive (the
hardest way). There are also CD-based versions which you can try by just
booting straight off the CD without installing anything, but I don't havea
link for that - sorry.

I also say go for ISOLinux... I have been using it for many installers I
use internally, and has worked perfectly. Ok, I admit, I have not tested
it with machines lower than 486, but... I don't remember seeing a 386 able
to boot from a CD! :)

Small report (re: isolinux test image, debian-cd changes available)

2002-04-08 Thread Gunnar Wolf

Hi,

I tried the woody-i386-1.raw image, and although I have not performed
extensive testing yet, I have the following comments:

(note - I might better submit this as a bug report - however, I don't know
which package to report this for...)

First of all, it loads perfectly on my test machine (Celeron, i810, mostly
standard machine).

I tested first the 24bf image. I was surprised to see it uses a
framebuffer... Now... This can be good, but I don't understand why it is
using it - The display is MUCH slower than using the regular interface,
and it is still curses-based. What did we gain from framebuffer?

Second - I am installing it using the Spanish interface. When I get to
choose the filesystem type I will be using, the text is almost too wide to
be shown on screen... It fits, but it is noticeably too wide, because of
the description of the Ext3 line:

Ext3: Siguiente generación de Ext2, un sistema de ficheros transaccional

Third - The translations for 'Found a Debian CD-ROM', 'Other bootable
partitions' and 'Securing LILO' screens seems not to have been found.

Fourth - After I select an option from 'Other bootable partitions', the
screen keeps its frame drawn on background, it does not get cleared with
the usual blue background.

Fifth - Upon reboot, the kernel loaded correctly, but when the second
part of the installer should have appeared, I got:

/usr/sbin/base-config: cat:: command not found

eight times, then:

INIT: Id "1" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes

Note that entering via a second tty, I was able to use the (minimal)
system - Cat was effectively installed.

Using the default 'idepci' install, I had (as expected) the same results
(of course, with the differences derived from the different kernels)
during the installation, however, the rest of the installation worked
fine.

I must go on working now... But well, this is my report. I hope it is
useful.

On a Soyo Dragon Plus motherboard (KT266A/AMD, I think it's an Award
BIOS) the El Torito extensions work as they should (including the
usual lack of any labels describing the images, oh well).

When using the bf2.4 image my USB keyboard was usable, with the other
images I had to plug my old AT keyboard in to do anything (of
course!). I selected the other options and they seemed to boot the
different kernels.

Standard El Torito menu - 4 items, each 2.88 MB devices. Labels 1, 2,
3 and 4 (with some addition info I forget), I get to pick one.

I tried this on a Compaq M300 Armada laptop where I know El Torito
support is lacking in the BIOS. Takes me straight to idepci, no
options.

Yes. On the Compaq Armada everything woks like you said (SYSLINUX
prompt, F3 gives help, menu options pick the right kernels etc). Works
on the Soyo too.

The boot up seems to be fine. I've not tried to actually install
anything yet since I can't actually trash either machine.

I have an older IBM PC (1997, 166 Mhz Pentium) on which I could not
boot these CDs at all. However, I think it has to do with the 32x
writer I'm using (I burned boot CD's with El Torito before and it
booted on the olide straight to the first image). I'm new to this CD
writing business on the whole, and this 32x writer is less than a day
old.

Raphael> Thanks for your help !

It's getting late and I can't really install, I hope this boot report
is of some use.

If you need some more information or want me to try some stuff, just
holler. I have a free partition on the Soyo machine and I will
probably try each installer when I get some time (and sleep).

FYI, I don't read debian-cd

Cheers!
Shyamal

Well, it was more along the lines that "IF we consider vannalla default,
then etc.", but since it's emerged that we don't, I'm completely OK with
that, except perhaps that we need to do something about making sure that
people grabbing the floppies could probably do with some hint that the
stuff in the top directory might not be the best choice,

Not that it will help most people --- If I'd not been part of this
conversation, then I doubt I'd be reading the READMEs to see which my
best bet was, I'd just grab the ones in .../current

Well, I'm certainly persuaded that the best bet is going to be an
isolinux based CD, with idepci as the default, and vanilla, compat and
bf24 available as alternatives. It saves space on the CD, works better
than multiboot, and on the few BIOSs that are rumoured not to deal with
ISOLINUX, people can always write a floppy or two, or boot off another
CD.

Cheers, Phil.

The I18N support, I think.
You can choose languages with special characters too (UTF8).

Wrong list. This report should be sent to the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
address. Please forward to them, or file the bug reports against the boot
floppies.
