Debian Linux 2.1 CD Request

2002-01-21 Thread Garka-Pope, Nigel

Dear Sir,
Our customer has tasked us to make some software and hardware changes to their
existing system which uses Debian Linux 2.1.

There is no problem setting up our test system to run the electronic hardware under
Debian Linux 2.2.

However when we hand the system back to our customer with the changes they've
requested to the software and hardware, they will run it on Debian Linux 2.1.

Ipso facto, would it be possible to obtain a copy of Debian Linux 2.1 on CD for us to
work entirely in Linux 2.1.

This being to avoid any possible compilation differences between the upgrade of
software, we will supply, being compiled and run using Debian Linux 2.2 but required
to run on Debian Linux 2.1 when returned to the customer.

Many thanks,
Nigel Garka-Pope

yes.

you'd probably be able to find a vendor who could supply you with this. failing
that, slink (2.1) ISO images for r4 are available from (via download)

http://planetmirror.com/pub/debian-cd/2.1_r4/

assuming you either have alpha, i386 or sparc hardware (that's the only iso
images we preserved)

I think it would be smarter to use a closer FTP mirror. That's what jigdo
is about.

sorry attila, a combination of tired and lazy - i just couldn't
remember your email address and thought i'd quickly ask here.

it's semi fixed now ? the cd images are rsyncable, but all the
.list files have been 600'ed making them unable to be fetched.
(which means as a mirror, i can't grab the new list files,
use PIK locally and then rsync against fsn.hu for the final
images..)

Yes, because my machine still generates them.

They will be available very soon, with the .jigdo files.

Sorry, my machine seems to be very slow for this task (a celeron 333 with
IDE disks...).

it'd also be nice if the netinst mirrors could be separated out (rather
than just a tag of "mirror", and there's an additional one in australia

http://planetmirror.com/pub/debian-netinst/ieure/

and

http://planetmirror.com/pub/debian-netinst/elf/

which are snapshots of ian's netinst and markbob's netinst-elf's images.

hmm - if there are going to be multiple people producing "netinst"
debian derivations, it'd be nice if ya'll could come up with different
names to tag them with..

i've cc'ed this to ian, so he knows there's an additional web page that
might need to be modified if he's adding mirrors and also to flag a
change in directory for us, to allow for future "netinst" derivations.

Malformed release file (using PCMCIA)

2002-01-21 Thread Jeppe Buk

Hi

I hope this is the right forum for a possible bug report - otherwise
please tell me to f*ck off :-)

I am trying to install Woody/i386 from the 2001-12-27 image. I get
past the configuring of network (and I can ping ftp.fi.debian.org),
but when I choose to install the base system from network I get the
following:

Malformed release file
http://http.us.debian.org:80/debian/dists/woody/Release

I have tried several mirrors using FTP and HTTP.

I am not a member of this list so please also reply in mail.

debian cd mirror list for au

2002-01-21 Thread jason andrade

hi,

just a small correction required - it looks like the AU entries have
gotten slightly out of sync.

currently, the first entry is a FTP pointer for debian-ftp.pacific.net.au
and the last entry is a HTTP pointer for mirror.pacific.net.au with
a bunch of other sites in between (which are all consistent)

since debian-ftp and mirror.pacific are the same machine, can someone
move the first entry down to the last one and change the name to match
as i just tested and both these work:

ftp://mirror.pacific.net.au/debian-cd/
http://mirror.pacific.net.au/debian-cd/

are they both going to stay that way, or will you release a woody release
at some point ? :-)

hmm, sorry, i missed the obvious there. i'll just create symlinks in
my debian-netinst tree marking one as potato and the other as woody.

i'm also making this tree available via rsync in case anyone else wants
to mirror both netinst releases from one location..

I'm interested in hacking on them, but I don't feel like doing it until
Woody is released. I personally think Ian's images look great, though I
have yet to audit them. I don't care whose images are made official, but
I think some should be. They get a lot of use.

If I ever make Woody netinsts, they'll probably be more
feature-oriented. I've kept the Potato ones totally stock.

Ok. If the CD page is lurking in cvs.d.o somewhere, I can update it myself.
Alternately, just don't list the mirrors on that page, since they are listed
on my netinst page.

unfortunately it's sort of lose-lose. unless david also creates a separate
"download from" page i guess. in which case both netinst releases are just
pointers into (separately maintained) download pages rather than having
to be separately maintained by whoever is updating the /CD tree.

you know, from looking at how diverse the mirror maintaince can be, i have
no idea how you debian developers get along at all with the actual OS :-)

I suppose we could combine efforts, and set up an official netinst master
site, with both versions of the images.

in simplest terms, a page called downloads.html in which you list
the (three now i think) places people can download your netinst
stuff from.

then the debian web pages don't need to keep track of mirrors
since you're doing it - and there is no direct download reference
on the debian web pages which is a good thing (tm).

Now that 2.2r5 is out, the files for 2.2r4 are soon going to disappear
from the FTP servers. It is likely that this will cause problems for
2.2r4 downloaders soon. However, from your description you are not
suffering from that problem:

Maybe ftp.us.debian.org is just overloaded? :-/

Anyway, you can safely interrupt jigdo-lite at any time with Ctrl-C
and then restart it and point it at another server. The data that was
downloaded so far will be kept, you will *not* have to download it
again.

> Or is this a manifestation of a known bug?

I don't think so. Sorry it doesn't work for you - please tell me
whether it works with another server.

Cheers,

  Richard
