I created yet another woody coaster

2001-09-29 Thread Manoj Srivastava

Hi,

 I created new boot-floppies. I created a custom CD. I burned
CD. tried an test install. Tihngs were going fine -- installing base
system. And then it all stopped -- could not install nano

Where is the list of files that is in the base system kept?
Shouldn't the debian-cd check check and see that the base system
files are indeed on the first CD?

Oh, this is the latest CVS versions (as of last night) of both
 boot-floppy and debian-cd.

/usr/lib/debootstrap/scripts/woody

probably so, though most everything in the base system should be at
least priority standard, but preferably important or required.

/usr/share/debian-cd/tasks/base-woody

See the comments in the same file. nano is included as a 'base' package.

Hi,

Thanks to ah and doogie, I now have a recipe for people to
avoid creating coasters. Simply use debbootstrap to get the list of
base packages and ensure they exist in your local mirror.

[no subject]

2001-09-29 Thread Brendan Dowling
I have a machine that I would like to install debian on, the machine does
not have a floppy drive and I don't have
a working floppy drive that I can loan to the machine.

Is there a minimal (10MB or less) bootable CD-ROM image that I can download
which does the equivalent of the
floppy images? I really don't want to have to buy a floppy drive or
download the 650MB images.

Thanks,

Brendan Dowling

I made the assumption that dpkg-scanpackages was removing some fields (the
Task: field in that case) while generating Packages file since all
Packages files generated by debian-cd had not even a single "Task:" field.

However, after investigation, it looks like that no .deb does have
a Task field (very strange, I was quite sure some people added such
fields) :
rhertzog@p200:~$ find /mirror/debian/pool/ -name '*.deb' | (while read i; do if dpkg
-I $i control | grep -q -i Task: ; then echo $i; fi; done)
rhertzog@p200:~$

So those fields are not coming from the packages themselves but from an
"override" file that is not distributed within the mirrors.

The only solution I have is to extract them from the Packages files in
the mirror and reinject them manually in the files generated by
dpkg-scanpackages. And if I do that, there's nothing to change on
dpkg-scanpackages...

Would you be so kind and explain me why ? I can use apt-ftparchive but it
will change absolutely nothing if it doesn't use this "task override"
that seems to not be mirrored ...

And I use dpkg-scanpackage for the support of this old dpkg-multicd
dselect method ...

Because a) it doesn't suck, unlike dpkg-scanpackages and b) because it
supports things like the new task overrides out of the box ?

That's obviously a bug on our (f.d.o) part, but it's not as if I can
fix it right now, is it ?

Do we really want to support that nowadays ?

What do other people think about that ?

I'd also be happy if we could drop that because :
- it takes place with the Packages.cd files
- it's a complicated hack to generate those Packages.cd (each file list
all the packages available on all the previous CD)

I have about no clue what you're talking about.

If you believe that dpkg-scanpackages from dpkg-multicd is broken,
please try out
http://people.debian.org/~joey/NMU/dpkg-multicd_0.17.1_all.deb which
is synced against dpkg-scanpackages from dpkg-dev 1.9.17. I haven't
noticed any change that would affect ``Task:'' headers, but...

If you still think there is a problem, please provide *INFORMATION*
about the problem so one can actually fix it. At the moment I don't
know what you want.

Regards,

Joey

Seconded. We supported it for slink and potato, but for the later
