Bug#497434: debian/copyright lacking

2008-09-02 Thread Thomas Viehmann

On 2008-09-01 22:35:55.00 Tim Riker <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Note: the mentioned fonts are NOT included in this package.
None the less, I'll expand the mention of the copyright on the
fonts that I'm NOT including.

You have fonts in both source tarballs and ship them in
/usr/share/bzflag/fonts/
is nonempty in both the testing bzflag and the unstable bzflag-data
package.
(I'll not discuss that you shouldn't be shipping these fonts anyways
but just find them on the system it runs on.)
Surely, these fonts have copyright attached to them and hopefully
some license.

Now that I had to look at your packaging again: your -data-package
misses Replaces/Conflicts with the old bzflag package, too, breaking
upgrades, but that would be another serious bug to file.

Kind regards

T.

Package: cups
Version: 1.3.8-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

The cupsd process appears to exit after serving a single http request.

 1. Start cups
 2. Go to http://localhost:631/
 3. The page loads, but without any CSS or images
 4. Pressing refresh gives a 'connection refused' error.

According to gdb this is *not* a crash:

0x7ffaaae54b88 in epoll_wait () from /lib/libc.so.6
(gdb) c
Continuing.

Program exited with code 0177.

Removal seems best from my point of view as well. Noone apparently cares

as the upstream maintainer of gem i would eventually volunteer to do the

however, i don't know the timeline for lenny (apart from the freeze), so
i don't know whether this is a good idea to do right now.

i will try to check out the patches in question asap.

Ok, so it doesn't sound like another effect of
http://bugs.debian.org/494168 then.

This is actually quite insightful, thanks. The outer process
apparently can write to stderr (fd 2) just fine, but the subprocess
tries to write to stderr which fails. This is probably a filter or a
backend. The interesting bit is that neither "*** WARNING" nor "Please
fix your" appears anywhere in the cups source, so maybe you are using
a third-party driver?

How did you do the strace on the backend process, modified the init
script?

Can you please do:
 * rm /var/log/cups/error_log
 * set "LogLevel debug" in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf
 * try to start cups

and send me /var/log/cups/error_log and /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and
/etc/cups/printers.conf?

Thanks,

Martin

Sorry, but… LOL. At the very time I read that, I knew what I’d find at
the end of your log, and it was:

> Backtrace:

This is undoubtedly a bug in the graphics driver.

The bug is only fixed in unstable and testing, not in stable. Please fix
in stable too.

Bug#437742: libdb4.6: FTBFS on arm: in testsuite, run_subsystem: env env007: db open:invalid argument

2008-09-02 Thread Steve Langasek
Investigating on agnesi, I see that this is the failing bit of the test:

 berkdb_open -create -btree -mode 0644 -env env1 -encrypt a.db

whereas this command immediately before it works fine:

 berkdb_open -create -btree -mode 0644 -env env0 -auto_commit a.db

so it looks like this is a problem with the encryption of some sort?

A reduced test case with the same error output is attached. Can be run as:

  echo "source ../test/test.tcl; run_std env007" | tclsh8.5

How do these tcl commands map to C, for better debugging?

Would it make sense to disable encryption support on arm?

Removal seems best from my point of view as well. Noone apparently cares
enough about the package to even offer to test the fixes.

as the upstream maintainer of gem i would eventually volunteer to do the
debian packaging;
however, i don't know the timeline for lenny (apart from the freeze), so
i don't know whether this is a good idea to do right now.

i will try to check out the patches in question asap.

checking andreas's "gem-nmu.diff" from msg#35 in bug#421560

everything seems to be fine.

as upstream author i would therefore say, these patches are fine to include.

the new upstream release of Gem addresses bug-report #454731;

Package: khelpcenter4:
Version: 4.1.0-2
Severity: grave

*** Please type your report below this line ***

After I installed the koffice-doc package from experimental I wanted to
rebuild the index. I started khelpcenter via kmail -> Help -> KMail Handbook
and in the Help Center I chose Settings -> Build Search Index. A popup appears
and I'm marking "Application Manuals" in the "search scope" column. When I

Bug#497006: ask_before_save is ignored if auto_save_rotated

2008-09-02 Thread Ying-Chun Liu (PaulLiu)
Hi caleb,

The lossless rotation of jpeg can only be applied on certain image size,
not all image size.
The lossless rotation is basically based on rotate the blocks of jpeg
files, and block could be 8x8, 16x16, or 16x8.

Your image is 320x308, which 308 is not a multiple of 8
That's why the incomplete blocks cannot be rotate.

Please refer http://www.faqs.org/faqs/jpeg-faq/part1/index.html

To rotate these images, we have to re-jpeg the image and then it becomes
lossy.

Regards,
 Paul

No, it does not, because:

Correct. However, both licences should still be listed in
debian/copyright because if you were to rebuild it not linked against
openssl then you may chose either. It is the resulting linked binary
that may not be distributed under the GPL, but there are alternate
permissions which allow us to distribute, namely Apache+OpenSSL.

If upstream morla uses redland linked against OpenSSL then they don't
have permission to distribute the resulting binaries either, so upstream
probably want to know. It would probably be enough for ether morla or
both morla and redland to add an openssl exception to their GPL licence.

I've downgraded the bug and retitled it. The bug should only be wishlist
since there is nothing wrong with redland itself, nor is a change
required in general to use it in other programs. The normal response
would be to convince upstream to licence appropriately for linking
against an Apache licence and an OpenSSL licence.

Hello caleb,

Do you mean the file changed after rotation is a data loss? Or any data
from the image are lost after rotation?

Hi caleb,

As Paul Liu said, The lossless rotation of jpeg can only be applied on
certain image size, not all image size. So I don't see it should be a
grave bug.

Thank you for you paid so much attentions on this package until now. I
will adopt this package in next upload.

Do I assume correctly, that in the last three month glibc has been updated on

That's where the error message is coming from, specifically
avahi-compat-libdns_sd/warn.c's avahi_warn_linkage().
It appears to be intended to trigger for anything using that API.

OTOH, for a packaged distribution like Debian I think a mass bug
filing would be more appropriate (against any package depending on
libavahi-compat-libdnssd1 ).

Done, here the logs

I know, but at this moment automatic is the only working method.

Yes, there is also the grub issue, root (sil_aiahbgbgaaaj). I don't know if is a
known/reported issue, but there is also an user comment on wiki page.

Bug#497434: debian/copyright lacking

None the less, I'll expand the mention of the copyright on the fonts

You have fonts in both source tarballs and ship them in
/usr/share/bzflag/fonts/
is nonempty in both the testing bzflag and the unstable bzflag-data
package.
(I'll not discuss that you shouldn't be shipping these fonts anyways but
just find them on the system it runs on.)
Surely, these fonts have copyright attached to them and hopefully some
license.

I presume you mean the png image files? These are not fonts, but images.

Fonts would have a ttf extension. Don't you agree?

Now that I had to look at your packaging again: your -data-package
misses Replaces/Conflicts with the old bzflag package, too, breaking
upgrades, but that would be another serious bug to file.

Would it be enough to put the sources of that specific version of syslinux
somewhere on cdimage.debian.org and document that ?

Once that this is done, we can reduce the severity of this bug to
wishlist.

I somewhat agree that we should extract what we need from the syslinux
package itself but it's not something that is very practical to implement
and IIRC we had quite some history with syslinux being broken in a few
cases that justified to keep control over what syslinux version we were
using.

Sledge, what do you think ?

Cheers,

Bug#497270: debian-cd: includes embedded copies of bootloaders

2008-09-02 Thread Daniel Baumann
Raphael Hertzog wrote:
> Would it be enough to put the sources of that specific version of syslinux
> somewhere on cdimage.debian.org and document that ?

for this bug, no.

first, debian source packages must contain all sources needed to produce
debian binary packages, you cannot out-source parts of the source to a
different location.

second, debian binary packages and debian source packages must be in
sync, which wouldn't be the case if you out-source parts of it.

however, for the sarge release (#497471), you could put a source tarball
contain the sources for that syslinux version into the same directory as
the source-iso images are kept; that way mirrors should pick it up
automatically.

> Once that this is done, we can reduce the severity of this bug to
> wishlist.

wishlist ist imho too low, at least normal or rather important would be
more approriate, given that debian-cd would, even if it includes the
tarball with the syslinux sources in the debian source package of
debian-cd itself, still create incomplete source images. which is quite
an important mis-feature of a cdimage creation software.

you need to fix that for lenny to, in case you decide to keep using
emebedded syslinux binaries.

completely unrelated to that: if syslinux upstream cannot fix the
regressions in time, the last resort solution is to go back to 3.63 for
unstable (i'll never embedded any isolinux binaries into syslinux, so
I'm depending on that the one in the archive is working).

also completely unrelated, but while we are at it, the next upload of
syslinux will be splittet into syslinux (arch) and syslinux-common
(indep), so that the pure bootloader files can be access/installed on
any arch.

i personally don't agree with this. a major reason for why we have the
current regressions in syslinux comes from exactely that fact that
cdimage software like debian-cd do not use the version from the archive,
otherwise we would have had reports months ago and would have had time
to fix it. now it's almost impossible to bisect between 3.63 and 3.71,
calling for testers and confirming this on all the affected different
hardware out there (which i don't have access to myself).

however, your call.

Discussed in http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2007/05/msg01173.html

With glibc-2.5 and gcc-4.1.2 (and gcc-4.2), the 'long double'
data type did change from a 64bit representation to a 128bit
representation on alpha, powerpc, sparc, s390. To allow
partial upgrades of packages, we will need to rename all
packages holding libraries with the long double data type in
their API. Both libc and libstdc++ do not need to be renamed,
because they support both representations. We rename the library
packages on all architectures to avoid name mismatches between
architectures (you can avoid the renaming by supporting both
datatype representations in the library as done in glibc and
libstdc++, but unless a library is prepared for that, it does not
seem to be worth the effort).

It is suggested to rename a package libfoo1 to libfoo1ldbl;
please wait with the renaming if the package depends on
another library package which needs renaming.

This package has been indentified as one with header files in
/usr/include matching 'long *double'. Please close this bug report
if it is a false positive, or rename the package accordingly.

In this case, it is most certainly a false positive. The only
place 'long *double' matches is a header file comment for the
automatically generated HAVE_LONG_DOUBLE definition. However,
nothing in the sources uses that definition to anything.

Bug#417259: depends on non-essential package wwwconfig-common in postrm

2008-09-02 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Hi Edelhard,

> while running archive wide piuparts tests your package failed on purge
> because of wwwconfig-common beeing unavailable during postrm:

Are you aware that this bug is still open as a release critical issue in
Lenny? Your uploads after you fixed the bug include amongst others a new
upstream release, so the package won't be unblocked for testing migration.

I think you need to make an upload to testing-proposed-updates if you want to
fix this issue, perhaps this could just be the exact changes from 0.7.1-2
again but of course with an appropriate version number.

cheers,
Thijs

In the parantheses, I was indeed confused.

No. The fact that you use a bitmap representation of (the "most common"
chars of) the font stored in an image doesn't change the fact that you
are essentially shipping a version of the font and need to abide by its
license and document copyright and license in debian/copyright. This is
also borderline w.r.t. the requirement that everything in Debian must be
built from source to be shipped in the .deb.

Indeed.

Bug#473037: patch

2008-09-02 Thread Christian Wäckerlin
This patch catches the exception "System.UnauthorizedAccessException",
so the program does nolonger _crash_ if
somebody connects to it using Firefox/Iceweasel.

However, the patch does not fix the problem completely, so the browser
still does not show any files.

I don't know why it works on your system but the tarball does not
include workrave-1.9.0/common/bin/DBus-glib.xml and it seems not to be
auto generated. This file, however, can be found in upstream vcs [1].
I added the file and workrave compiled fine with that.

Bug#477060: Please add an lenny-ignore tag to bug #477060

2008-09-02 Thread Frank Küster
Dear release team,

as explained in my earlier mails, I request that you grant a
lenny-ignore tag to bug

#477060 texlive-base: license of amslatex is unclear

We have already explained the reasons in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=55;bug=477060 and
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=60;bug=477060

Meanwhile, it has been found out that doxygen creates code which
requires amslatex. This means that removing AMSLaTeX (in other words,
not granting the tag) will not be possible without delaying lenny for
weeks, except if someone steps up and does lots of test compiles and
maybe code fixes.

Which I do not expect, since

- the TeX team is no less overworked since I first asked the release
team about the issue in July, and

- the release team doesn't seem to have any manpower to handle this.

Regards, Frank

Please look at attached patch that should fix this problem.

I still think this point is valid and nfcapd should use a more sane
default directory to store its data files :)

It is suggested to rename a package libfoo1 to libfoo1ldbl;
please wait with the renaming if the package depends on
another library package which needs renaming.

This package has been indentified as one with header files in
/usr/include matching 'long *double'. Please close this bug report
if it is a false positive, or rename the package accordingly.

Likewise to the libwww-dev bug, this package doesn't actually provide
a long double api.

Sorry this answer took so long.

First the usual disclaimer: I am not a release team member.

I still think that the release team will not accept this update. After
all, they have to review the diff. And

 31 files changed, 605 insertions(+), 219 deletions(-)

is not easily reviewed, even if ~ 250 lines are documentation. But you
can ask the release team yourself, if you don't believe me.

This is exatcly the kind of change that should be deferred until
lenny+1, IMHO.

These should be included then.

If there are no changes necessary then it might be ok. But changing
debhelper compatibility level is something I would avoid so close to
the release unless you need the change.

No problem here.

Yes.

This also looks like something that should better be deferred.

Yes.

A less intrusive way would have been better, I think.

But all in all, it's quite a lot of change and there is plenty
opportunity to introduce new bugs. This is something that should be
avoided if possible.

Stefan

Subject: nis: map values containing non-ascii characters vanish
Package: nis
Version: 3.17-6
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Solaris 10 and Debian nis package 3.13-2 both accept non-ascii
characters in maps:

  sol-10$ ypcat passwd|grep Mark|awk -F: '{print $5}'|od -c
  000 K . M a r k s t r 367 m \n
  015

  nis_3.13-2$ ypcat passwd|grep Mark|awk -F: '{print $5}'|od -c
  000 K . M a r k s t r 367 m \n
  015

However, 3.17-6 does not:

  nis_3.17-6$ ypcat passwd|grep Mark|awk -F: '{print $5}'|od -c
  000

This breaks login access to the system.

Custom maps may also not behave as expected, which leads to
silent corruption of other data on the system. For example,
I build my apache htpasswd files using NIS password data and
users with non-ascii in their gecos are silently excluded.

by VMMaker 3.8b6 [...]

However, I cannot identify the source file for that file. Also,
debian/copyright doesn't contain any hint how this file is generated.

So I think this packages fails the DFSG, and cannot be part of main in
it's current version (and fails also the release policy, which makes the
bug serious).

Cheers,
Andi

Actually, that file doesn't exist in my build tree:

http://git.debian.org/?p=collab-maint/workrave.git;a=tree;f=common/bin;hb=master

and it does look like it's auto-generated by common/bin/dbusgen.py:

  if options.language:
  if options.language == 'C':
  header_ext=".h"
  elif options.language == 'C++':
  if options.client:

  if options.server:
  templates.append(directory+"/DBus-template.cc")
  templates.append(directory+"/DBus-template.hh")
  header_ext=".hh"

  header_ext=".xml"

Package: pulseaudio
Version: 0.9.10-2
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hi,

in the following situation, pulseaudio freezes the boot process:
- pulseaudio system start enabled (in /etc/default/pulseaudio)
- some bad permissions in the /dev directory (due to bug #491114 in my case).

In my case, the error message was:
Jul 18 07:22:56 tatanka pulseaudio[2715]: main.c:
  setrlimit(RLIMIT_NICE, (31, 31)) failed: Operation not permitted
Jul 18 07:22:56 tatanka pulseaudio[2715]: main.c:
  setrlimit(RLIMIT_RTPRIO, (9, 9)) failed: Operation not permitted

In understand that the origin of the bug doesn't lie in pulseaudio, and that
is has been fixed already (see #491114). But, whatever causes pulseaudio to
fail its startup, I think it shouldn't freeze the whole boot process, but
rather die gracefully.

Kind regards,
Gabriel Kerneis

The cause of this appears to be that debian/rules looks for the python
binaries in the current directory instead of /usr/bin, and so setup.py
is never run, and the package is built without the actual python files.

The following patch fixes the problem:

The rexml lib is vulnerable to a DoS attack.
Please see

I know there isn't an official patch yet (except the overloading of the REXML

expect that
to be out soon.
