Bug#341387: beagle: option for index files to be stored elsewhere

2005-11-30 Thread joshua
Package: beagle
Version: 0.0.12-2
Severity: wishlist

/home is on a RAID1 logical volume with 30 days worth of daily backups
also on RAID1. Since I don't mind loosing beagle's index files, they
are easy to regenerate, it would be better to store them on a simple
non-raid logical volume. A debconf option would be great to specify the
beagle prefix to use by default.

Bug#341701: update-menus should exit cleanly if the dpkg database is broken

2005-12-02 Thread joshua
Package: menu
Version: 2.1.26
Severity: minor

If dpkg has a slightly broken index file then menu will complain and
generate a new menu with many missing entries. A better behavior would
be to complain and leave the old menus in place until the dpkg index
files are corrected by apt-get update or whatever.

Bug#311762: acpid: no ac events

2005-06-03 Thread joshua
Package: acpid
Version: 1.0.4-1
Severity: important

linux 2.6.11.8 on fujitsu p-2040 laptop (transmeta)

/proc/acpi/ac_adapter/AC/state shows the correct ac power state.
However, when I run acpi_listen, I never get any ac events. This
is the main problem.

A minor problem is that I only get a "pressed"
event for the LID button. I never get a "release" event for
the LID button. This seems strange.

Can you suggest how to debug this problem? If I don't get any
hints for debugging then I'll try with APM and see what happens.

Bug#315800: openoffice.org: iiim setting doesn't stick, keeps switching to english

2005-06-25 Thread joshua
Package: openoffice.org
Version: 1.1.4-3
Severity: normal

Since debianized openoffice uses the gtk event loop, I decided to try
using iiim to type Hindi following the instructions here:

http://anakin.ncst.ernet.in/~aparna/consolidated/x1963.html

gedit works as advertised. When I try the same thing in openoffice, I
am able to switch into hindi using control-alt-l. However, as soon as I
type a few hindi glyphs, the language is switched back to english
(automatically, it seems). control-space always reports "latin" even
after selecting the language again with control-alt-l.

I am using iiimf-htt-server 11.4.1870-7.

Bug#331260: nautilus: browsing openclipart SVG uses too much memory (>1G)

2005-10-02 Thread joshua
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.10.1-4
Severity: normal

It was a mystery why my machine was swapping until I ran top and
noticed that nautilus had allocated almost 1G when browsing into
openclipart. I only had 2-3 directories worth of SVG open on the
screen. Yah, so I don't need previews _that_ badly. :-0

instead of concentrating on the work I should be doing. Keep up the

Bug#322113: libc6: aborted upgrade can create /etc/ld.so.nohwcap

2005-08-08 Thread joshua
Package: libc6
Version: 2.3.5-3
Severity: normal

When I upgrade libc6 and run out of disk space during the install then
sometimes /etc/ld.so.nohwcap is left around. This causes all binaries
linked against pthread to SEGV. I'm using NTPL via libc6-i686 but
I don't know if this is part of the problem. As soon as I remove or
rename /etc/ld.so.nohwcap then my system becames usable again. Once
I free up some disk space then I am able to upgrade libc6.

Bug#322947: beagle: pdfinfo & pdftotext zombies

2005-08-13 Thread joshua
Package: beagle
Version: 0.0.12-1
Severity: normal

After leaving beagled running for a while, I was surprised to find
that I couldn't fork any more processes. The problem was 83 pairs of
pdfinfo & pdftotext like this:

joshua8385  7733  0 19:39 ?00:00:00 [pdfinfo]
joshua8387  7733  0 19:39 ?00:00:03 [pdftotext]

joshua8391  7733  0 19:39 ?00:00:00 [pdftotext]

So it seems like beagled isn't reaping child processes properly.

Bug#419182: kiax: sound quality very poor compared to skype

2007-04-14 Thread joshua
Package: kiax
Version: 0.8.51.dfsg-2-1
Severity: normal

I can't figure it out. I have skype 1.3.0.53 and the sound quality for a
test call is almost crystal clear. When I try to use kiax with
iax.fwdnet.net, the sound quality is so bad as to be unusable.

Initially I suspected that I was getting poor sound quality due to
network delay so I registered two computers on my local LAN with FWD. I
called from one to the other. Now, if I understand FWD correctly, the
audio data is routed directly between the callers (not through FWD) so
this test should eliminate all network delay. Still, I found the sound
quality unchanged -- very poor. I tried GSM, speex, and ULaw. I turned
off all the audio filters and silence detection. It still sounded
terrible.

Any suggestions would be welcome. I loath to use Skype because it is
proprietary software and IAX should be superior.

Bug#419530: lvm2: poor documentation

2007-04-16 Thread joshua
Package: lvm2
Version: 2.02.06-3
Severity: normal

1. If you have two volumegroups with the same name then vgrename
helpfully shows you the UUIDs and suggests that it is necessary
to refer to the vg by UUID. However, there is no hint as to
how to do this. There is no documented option for passing the
vg UUID to vgrename.

2. The vgchange man page claims that the --available option "Controls
the availability of the logical volumes in the volume group for
input/output. In other words, makes the logical volumes known/unknown
to the kernel." However, I could not get this to work. This option does
work as documented when used with _LV_change. The documentation for
vgchange needs to be updated. Does vgchange --available in fact work in
some circumstances?

Another problem is that cupsys goes to 100% cpu while cups-driverd is
stopped by the debugger. That shouldn't happen.

Bug#395145: ltsp-server: stuck mounting NFS?

2006-10-25 Thread joshua
Package: ltsp-server
Version: 0.99debian5
Severity: normal

I built a sid client. When I try to boot, the last messages on
console are:

Begin: Mounting root file system
Begin: Running /scripts/nfs-top ...
Done.
IP-Config: eth0 ...
eth0: link up, ...

Then it just does nothing. I looked at the initrd. I'm not sure if
it is even getting to the nfsmount part. What more diagnostics can
I provide?

Bug#680649: linux-image-3.0.0-1-amd64: Restoring from hibernate requires rerunning /etc/init.d/kbd start manually to fix broken consoles

2012-07-07 Thread Joshua
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.0.0-3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I have some nonstandard console settings that require running /etc/init.d/kbd
to configure console.
Using the newer console-setup is a non-starter for reasons that are not
relevant at this time.

Somewhere in the last two months (it's hard to tell exactly), there was a
regression such that
after restoring from hibernate, some console settings are not restored
correctly. Running
/etc/init.d/kbd start successfully restores them.

Bug might be related to #647153. I had to reapply my original patch as the
maintainer patch did not work for me.

Bug#681951: "gnome help" fonts conflict with "darklooks"

2012-07-17 Thread Joshua
Package: gnome
Version: 1:2.30+7
Severity: normal

When using GNOME with the darklooks theme, which is white text on black
background, the GNOME help application displays its documents with black text
on black background. Even if you deselect the option 'use system fonts', the
problem persists.

The main menu to Help does display white text on black background, as is the
default for this theme whether 'use system fonts' is enabled or not. But the
actual contents of documents are all black on black either way.

Bug#720058: libgl1-nvidia-glx: when installing libgl1-*-glx on amd64, recommend i386 package if ia32libs is installed

2013-08-17 Thread Joshua
Package: libgl1-nvidia-glx
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Upgraded wine 1.0.1 to current with apt-get install wine. Launched Starcraft.
Got blank screen with keyboard
input disabled except for switch to tty hotkeys in X (good thing I have
consoles enabled).

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Effective solution was apt-get install libgl-nvidia-glx:i386

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Problem fixed.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Problem should not have happened. This is a farily obvious situation. If you
have the 64 bit render package
on a workstation and 32 bit libraries, you probably want the 32 bit render
package. Obvious ways of installing
it don't work as they try to replace 64 bit exe packages with 32 bit exe
packages that chain to replacing most
of the system with 32 bit exe packages.

Bug#653959: citadel-server was auto-selected and installed by dist-upgrade for what appears to be no good reason, and apt-get purge citadel-server failed to back out all system changes

2012-01-01 Thread Joshua
Source: citadel-server
Version: wheezy
Severity: serious
Tags: security
Justification: Policy 3.5

apt-get dist-upgrade decided to install citadel-server (no I didn't know what
it was) for who-knows-what reason.
Install created a new publicly listening service (never a good thing
security-wise)
Install created a new user & group
an immediate apt-get purge citadel-server failed to back out the
user,group,extra directories in /var

Bug#861004: git-buildpackage: gbp buildpackage fails with nonsense errors when binary files have changed since last release

2017-04-23 Thread Joshua
Package: git-buildpackage
Version: 0.6.22
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Long story. Short version: try to get a particular far branch to build.

$ cd /tmp
$ mkdir a b
$ cd a
$ apt-get source rdesktop
$ cd ../b
$ git clone -b surge https://www.github.com/joshudson/rdesktop rdesktop-surge
$ cp -a ../a/rdesktop-*/debian rdesktop-surge/debian
$ cd rdesktop-surge
$ gbp buildpackage --git-upstream-branch=surge --git-ignore-branch

Fails with references to cannot diff .exe files. Well duh.

It appears it's trying to update the quilt with every file that changed since
the last release of rdesktop,
which is pretty much the opposite of what it should be doing.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

nuked all of debian/patches and converted the package type to native and ran
dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc

Bug#861053: grub2: grub doesn't fully honor GRUB_LINUX_DISABLE_UUID; UUIDs cannot work here

2017-04-23 Thread Joshua
Package: grub2
Version: grub2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

apt-get dist-upgrade ignored the fact that grub2 is pinned to never and
installed grub2 anyway. update-grub promptly installed a bad configuration
file. The pin file is still present.

It is not possible to use UUID search on this system as this will not
result in a sane configuration. There are multiple paths to /, only 1
of which may be used, and the first choice on the list is not it.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

apt-get remove grub2
lilo -t && lilo

I know from experience that editing /boot/grub/grub.cfg is futile.

   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Bug#861783: dpkg: trying to local divert a file diverted by a package does not work

2017-05-03 Thread Joshua
Package: dpkg
Version: 1.18.23
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

firefox-esr has a diversion of /usr/bin/firefox; and package firefox-esr
must be installed for dependency resolution; however I actually need
to use a package of firefox that doesn't have a .dpkg

So I try dpkg-divert /usr/bin/firefox

Nope!

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

All variants of dpkg-divert that remotely made sense to try.

I tried reading the source code to determine if I could safely knock
the check out. This was inconclusive as I don't understand it well enough
to tell what would happen.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Frustration.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

let go of /usr/bin/firefox so I could add symlink
/usr/bin/firefox -> /usr/local/lib/firefox/firefox

Bug#770139: lilo chokes on dmraid mirroring

2014-11-18 Thread Joshua
Package: lilo
Version: 1:23.2-4
Severity: normal
Tags: d-i patch

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Tried to use lilo on a dmraid setup after grub2 misconfigured itself beyond my
capacity to fix.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Removed all knowledge of dm-devices from lilo.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Lilo works on dm mirroring only when it doesn't know what it is.

Bug#775560: upgrade-reports: Wheezy -> Jessie: machine becomes unbootable due to missing Grub

2015-04-25 Thread Joshua

Hi,

I can confirm I have experienced this problem as well. First I ran an
automated install of Wheezy from a Squeeze (Debian 6) recovery image.

Then I upgraded a few packages from wheezy to wheezy-backports but had
apt-get dependencies I could not solve. So I upgraded to Jessie.

After the upgrade to Jessie I got a warning that grub could not be found
etc. I thought "this is crazyness, of course my server has grub, I've
seen it and it boots."

I rebooted, and discovered that in fact, grub that was installed by
Squeeze, was incapable of booting Jessie. (I might be wrong, I'm not a
Debian guru or anything)

My disk layout is as follows

I believe grub was installed on sda and sdb (I didn't do it myself, it
was done by some script of my hosting provider's rescue disk)
sda1 and sdb1 formed md0, which was about 500MB, ext2 filesystem mounted
as /boot.

sda2 and sdb2 form another mdX with LVM.

One of the logical volumes is root, and that was /

This is what I saw when attempting to boot the non-booting system (I
typed this out manually and roughly)

-
checking root filesystem ... fsck from util linux blah dev mapper
vg0-root clean x/y files blocks etc.

3.2 ext4-fs dm-0 mounted filesytem with ordered data role opts done.
begin running /scripts/local-bottom ... done
begin running /scripts/init-bottom ... done
3.7 systemd failed to mount tmpfs at /sys/fs/cgroup: no such file or
directory.

Thanks

Bug#780768: network-manager: build up of dhcp*.lease files in /var/lib/NetworkManager: have hundreds, expect 2

2015-03-18 Thread Joshua
Package: network-manager
Version: 0.9.10.0-6
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

Trying to debug malfunctioning internet.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Tried to determine live lease by reading dhclient lease file. Found hundreds of
files.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Had difficulty identifying active file due to large number of files with
untypable names.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

2 files: dhclient-eth1.lease and dhclient6-eth1.lease

(the fact that's eth1 instead of eth0 is a minor bug in udev)

Bug#779002: wine32 sound does not work on amd64 arch

2015-02-22 Thread Joshua
Package: wine
Version: 1.6.2-19
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Sound does not play correctly (or at all) with 32 bit wine on a 64 bit system.
This is
well-known to be the case as verified by google search; however not yet listed
in bug
reports.

Cause: libopaus0 is not multiarch compatible.
Workaround: bypass pulseaudio (not always effective)
Additional information:
http://tanguy.ortolo.eu/blog/article116/wine-sound-testing

   * What led up to the situation?

Upgrade wheezy -> jessie

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Tried advice for switching from pulseaudio to direct.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

No effect. KDE holds sound open which basically requires pulseaudio for any
sound to function.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Sound plays.

Bug#839551: rdesktop needs fixes for DPI and Mouse Cursor for Windows 10

2016-10-01 Thread Joshua
Package: rdesktop
Version: 1.8.3-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

RDP needs the following fixes to work well connecting to Windows 10

1) Support passing DPI to Windows 10 RDP Server; Windows 10 lost support
for using the registry provided value in this case.

2) Support using the desktop manager provided cursor instead of the remote
machine cursor; in some determinstic scenarios the remote cursor is no good,
but this is borderline impossible to detect. The user will know what to do.

Bug#1050483: /usr/bin/x86_64-linux-gnu-objdump: objdump and nm choke on fully stripped ELF executables

2023-08-24 Thread Joshua
Package: binutils-x86-64-linux-gnu
Version: 2.35.2-2
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/x86_64-linux-gnu-nm

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

Originally, trying to figure out why these programs would not load. Ultimately,
discovering that nm (my normal go-to tool) and objdump could not handle these.
I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but it appears to be the tools cannot
handle binaries that have less than two sections.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

After discovering that readelf could cope with the problem I was able to repair
the binary headers; however even so, objdump and nm cannot cope.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

A more sane error message than a section that doesn't exist has an offset
outside
the file repeated twice.

Bug#1050578: linux-image-6.1.0-11-amd64: kernel disk device cache coherency issue: stale reads on /dev/sda1

2023-08-26 Thread Joshua
Package: src:linux
Version: 6.1.38-4
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

Upgrade to bookworm fragmented the EFI paritition (due to changing boot logo)
and defrag was in order. As this BIOS
currently has broken legacy boot, I used dosbox-x to defrag the EFI partition
rather than boot the FreeDOS CD-ROM.
Thus this uncovered the bug. On minimizing the bug, it got very simple. I can
reliably reproduce as follows:

# hexedit /dev/sda
G 10 (your value may vary)
PgDn
PgDn
^C
# hexedit /dev/sda1
PgDn
write a marker to the padding between the BPB and the first FAT sector.
(If your system doesn't have one, edit an error message in the boot sector)
# hexedit /dev/sda1
G 10
PgDn
PgDn
Look for marker written above, find it's not there !!!
^C

For demonstration of the fact the cache is wrong but the data is sved, you can
do the following:

# reboot
# hexedit /dev/sda
G 1
PgDn
PgDn
Look for marker written above, find it's there !!!

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

Only effective workaround I could find was reboot at certain locations.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I seriously expect no possability of block level cache incoherency between
different partition devices on the same block device.
Quite frankly, I am amazed this doesn't cause tons and tons of issues.

I am restriced to one hand and forced to enable stickykeys everywhere

It's too difficult to switch consoles with three finget hotkey and sometimes
impossible.

as emergency action I set suid root on chvt which setting suid on a binary not
designed for it is a bad idea

Bug#437017: pybliographer: when saving, does not canonicalize order of entries

2007-08-09 Thread joshua
Package: pybliographer
Version: 1.2.9-1
Severity: normal

I keep my bib files in GIT. When saving I notice that pybliographer
sometimes reorders entries which are unchanged. As far as possible,
the original order of the entries in the file should be preserved
when saving to minimize the differences pick up by GIT.

Bug#427625: libc6: bindtextdomain not properly documented?

2007-06-05 Thread joshua
Package: libc6
Version: 2.5-7
Severity: normal

This is probably a stupid question but take a look at this simple
program:

snip
#include
#include
#include

int main()
{
  bindtextdomain("ppx", "/home/joshua/ppx/locale");
  printf("domain = %s\n", textdomain("ppx"));
  setlocale(LC_MESSAGES, "de_DE.UTF-8");
  printf("%s\n", gettext("America"));
}
snip

When I strace this, it never looks in /home/joshua/ppx/locale. I tested
this on 3 Debian systems and 1 Gentoo system. Am I doing something
stupid? I keep reading the docs for bindtextdomain but I don't
understand what I'm doing wrong. For example:

$ cc test.c  -o test
$ strace ./test 2>&1  |grep ppx
write(1, "domain = ppx\nAmerica\n", 21domain = ppx

On my box, it looks in /usr/lib/locale/. I suspected that my compiler
toolchain was broken but on my brother's gentoo box, it searches
/usr/lib64/locale instead of the directory I specify in bindtextdomain.

On the other hand, if I strace /usr/bin/hello then it searches
/usr/share/locale which is correct. But if I dpkg-buildpackage hello
using apt-src then that build of hello searches /usr/lib/locale/. So
maybe my compiler toolchain really is broken?

Can you shed any light the behavior of bindtextdomain?

Bug#428499: libapache2-mod-perl2: Apache2::SubProcess docs woefully incomplete

2007-06-12 Thread joshua
Package: libapache2-mod-perl2
Version: 2.0.2-2.4
Severity: normal

1. The read_data function only reads a single line. This is usually not
what you want. Instead, I suggest:

sub read_from_pipe {
my($fh) = @_;
my $data = '';
while (1) {
  if (PERLIO_IS_ENABLED || IO::Select->new($fh)->can_read(10)) {
my $l = <$fh>;
last if !defined $l;
$data .= $l;
  }
}
$data;
}

2. There is no mention of wait in the man page. On unix, at least, I
believe it is necessary to call wait to avoid creating zombie
processes. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks.

Bug#428502: gnome-terminal: recently typed characters sometimes don't appear immediately

2007-06-12 Thread joshua
Package: gnome-terminal
Version: 2.18.0-1
Severity: normal

This looks like the kind of buffering problem that would happen if bash
didn't call fflush internally. Especially when I'm entering text using
readline, sometimes the characters don't appear immediately but if I
type another character then the previous characters appear (they are not
lost). I have seen the same problem with bash and with psql so the bug
might be in readline or in gnome-terminal. Maybe you have some insight?

Bug#376244: bcron: dangerous typo needs better foolproofing

2006-07-01 Thread joshua
Package: bcron
Version: 0.09-3
Severity: normal

I was trying to type "-l" but I mistyped it as (with a space):

  crontab - l

To my surprise, this deleted the crontab. Bad! Better argument
checking is needed.

Bug#381801: bcron: jobs run in wrong order when catching up after a resume

2006-08-06 Thread joshua
Package: bcron
Version: 0.09-3
Severity: normal

If I suspend my laptop for 24 hours and then resume, the jobs can be run
in the wrong order. For example, I have some jobs which run at 4am:

15 4 * * *  A
20 4 * * *  B
24 4 * * *  C

When I resume the machine at 9am, then I found that the job ran in
the order C, A, and B. Is this a bug?

Bug#439115: when: option to hide or show periodic entries

2007-08-22 Thread joshua
Package: when
Version: 1.1.0-1
Severity: wishlist

I have so many birthdays that I can hardly see the non-periodic entries.
It would be useful to be able to choose which kind of entries I want to
see. Perhaps some options like "--periodic=hide" and "--aperiodic=show"
Maybe you can think of better names.

Bug#425793: ffmpeg2theora: document meaning of quality scale

2007-05-23 Thread joshua
Package: ffmpeg2theora
Version: 0.16-2+b1
Severity: wishlist

For example, "[0 to 10] Set encoding quality for video" but which side
of the scale is high quality and which is low quality? Please add
"0=best" or "10=best", whichever is true. Also, the same info is needed
for audio.

My other question is this--if I specify the bitrate then I expect to get
the highest quality which fits in the given bitrate. Or do I need to
specify, for example, both -v and -V?

Bug#425794: ffmpeg2theora: offer n-pass, fit within XX megabyte option

2007-05-23 Thread joshua
Package: ffmpeg2theora

Various AVI encoding tools offer a 2-pass (or more) process which
improves quality and can fit the resulting file to the size of a CD
(700M) or arbitrary size. ffmpeg2theora should offer something similar.

Bug#352959: runit-services: sshd memory limit is inherited, causing bizarre memory failures

2006-02-15 Thread joshua
Package: runit-services
Version: 0.2.0
Severity: normal

from ssh/run:

  exec chpst -m800 "$SSHD" -D -e

I appreciate the idea of limiting memory usage as a security precaution.
BUT, this limit is inherited to subprocesses! For example, I was unable
to run "apt-get update" because apt tries to mmap a 12M file. If you
can figure out how to make the limit not inherited then it might be a
good idea.

Bug#353673: runit-run: getty 1

2006-02-20 Thread joshua
Package: runit-run
Version: 0.6.0
Severity: normal

This is my second install of runit-run. Everything went smoothly except
for:

1. I'm installing onto a Xen node which only has one tty which I access
from the hosting provider via ssh. Why doesn't runit-run put a getty
on tty1 by default?

2. After installing runit-run, I am instructed to reboot. I did:

INIT: Switching to runlevel: 6
etc..

But then I couldn't access the machine. Even ping didn't work.
I rebooted the Xen node from my hosting provider's control
panel. I'm not sure what that does, but on console I got:

SysRq : Emergency Sync
Emergency Sync complete

However, the machine doesn't reboot. Probably the hosting provider
is trying to reboot with telinit or something. But then ping & ssh
start working. I have no idea what is going on here.

Bug#357903: dict-wn: cordon definition omits common usage

2006-03-19 Thread joshua
Package: dict-wn
Version: 1.7-1
Severity: normal

Cordon is usually meant as: "A line or series of sentinels, or of
military posts, inclosing or guarding any place or thing." according to
http://news.google.com

WN only mentions "cord or ribbon worn as an insignia of honor or rank"
