Bug#403224: initramfs-tools: confirmation with sarge testing

2006-12-16 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.85d
Followup-For: Bug #403224

I'm running a Debian testing with all packages updated to the newest version.
I made the last update this morning and I think that it included also
initramfs-tools. Afterwards I
couldn't boot anymore.
Using the initrd...bak file for boot solved it this time. The next boot comes
now.

Bug#706060: Docker 0.6.6 debian packaging update

2013-12-29 Thread Thomas Koch
Johan Euphrosine (proppy) posted a packaging update on nov 21. to docker.dev:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!topic/docker-dev/7o-sXWFUyaU

The "bug with golang archive/tar" is already resolved in the the debian go
package so there remains only a), c):

a/ missing gosqlite3 dependencies
c/ missing go.net/websocket dependencies (functionality disabled with a patch)

Thanks to everybody who brings Docker to Debian (and maybe to backports...)!

closure compiler is also a library dependency, e.g. of gwt. It might be a good
idea to provide two binary packages, one for the library jar and another one
for the manpage + executable.

Bug#699809: cfengine3 packaging project on github

2014-02-18 Thread Thomas Koch
Hi,

this is a reply to the debian bug report asking for a newer cfengine version,
CCing the members of the debian packaging team on github.

It seems there are people working on packaging a current cfengine version at
github:
https://github.com/Webhuis/Cfengine-debian/wiki

I don't know, whether there have been trials to contact the current (MIA?)
maintainer of cfengine3, Antonio Radici. I'll send a MIA request to debian-
devel right after this mail

@DebianPackagingTeam: Do you need any help? I'm not a DD, so I can't sponsor
your packages, but I might have some experience in packaging. Do you have an
estimation of when there might be an upload of cfengine 3.[56] to Debian?

Bug#736114: please backport reclass

2014-01-19 Thread Thomas Koch

Severity: wishlist

Hi Martin,

watched your talk at LCA and installed python-reclass from testing. The
reclass package itself could not be installed because the stable python
package does not seem to provide python:any - don't understand.

But cli.py from python-reclass works so a backport would just be another
upload.

Could you be so kind to provide a backport?

Hi,

I've just read the emacs policy (from stable, which is outdated) because I'd
like to have a few modes packaged and found this discussion.

Please tell me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't emacsen-common just use dpkg
triggers? By using triggers, all the hard work can be solved once in emacsen-
common and packaging an emacs mode wouldn't be more complicate than to figure
out the correct debian/copyright.

scrz manages linux containers (configure, start, stop, supervize) and the
images that should be run in those containers. It's inspired by docker.io but
written in Haskell and uses btrfs instead of aufs for image and snapshot
management.

Hi Debian-Haskell folks,

I hope that somebody might be interested in this cool project. I've no
experience with Haskell and would be curious how much work it might be to
package this cool and promising project for Debian?

Description : highly compressed 2D barcode for paper or film archiving of
digital data

Optar stands for OPTical ARchiver. It's a codec for encoding data on paper or
free software 2D barcode in other words. Optar fits 200kB on an A4 page, then
you print it with a laser printer. If you want to read the recording, scan it
with a scanner and feed into the decoder program. A practical level of
reliability is ensured using forward error correction code (FEC). Automated
processing of page batches facilitates storage of files larger than 200kB.

Bug#725408: Debian bug #725408

2013-10-27 Thread Thomas Koch
I could reproduce this behaviour also with 'emacs -q'. My org-mode package is
from backports but my org-mode-doc package from testing since there isn't one
in backports.

I've purged both emacs23-common-non-dfsg and org-mode-doc and reinstalled only
org-mode-doc from testing. Than I see the version 8 of org-mode info
documentation in emacs.

After installing emacs23-common-non-dfsg again, I see version 6 of the org
mode documentation.

I've purged both packages again and installed emacs23-common-non-dfsg first and
org-mode-doc afterwards and still only see version 6 of org-mode in the info
browser.

When I run "info" from the shell, I see the org 8 manual.

The solution might be related to this:

Info-directory-list is a variable defined in `info.el'.
Its value is ("/usr/share/info/emacs-23" "/usr/share/info/"
"/usr/share/info/")

Documentation:
List of directories to search for Info documentation files.
If nil, meaning not yet initialized, Info uses the environment
variable INFOPATH to initialize it, or `Info-default-directory-list'
if there is no INFOPATH variable in the environment, or the
concatenation of the two if INFOPATH ends with a colon.

When `Info-directory-list' is initialized from the value of
`Info-default-directory-list', and Emacs is installed in one of the
standard directories, the directory of Info files that come with Emacs
is put last (so that local Info files override standard ones).

When `Info-directory-list' is initialized from the value of
`Info-default-directory-list', and Emacs is not installed in one
of the standard directories, the first element of the resulting
list is the directory where Emacs installs the Info files that
come with it. This is so that Emacs's own manual, which suits the
version of Emacs you are using, will always be found first. This
is useful when you install an experimental version of Emacs without
removing the standard installation.

If you want to override the order of directories in
`Info-default-directory-list', set INFOPATH in the environment.

If you run the Emacs executable from the `src' directory in the Emacs
source tree, and INFOPATH is not defined, the `info' directory in the
source tree is used as the first element of `Info-directory-list', in
place of the installation Info directory. This is useful when you run
a version of Emacs without installing it.

Description : JavaScript MVC Framework for HTML applications running in

AngularJS assists with running single-page applications by augmenting
browser-based applications with model–view–controller (MVC) capability.

The library reads in HTML that contains additional custom tag attributes; it
then obeys the directives in those custom attributes, and binds input or
output parts of the page to a model represented by standard JavaScript
variables. The values of those JavaScript variables can be manually set, or
retrieved from static or dynamic JSON resources.

Bug#741561: please provide an extra binary package with CaCert certificates

2014-03-31 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: ca-certificates
Version: 20130119
Followup-For: Bug #741561

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi,

I don't wont to argue whether it's the correct decision to drop Cacert. But
please make it easier for users who want to continue using Cacert to doing
so. Asking every single user to download and verify the root certificate for
themselves is unnecessary, avoidable work.

Please provide an additional binary package, e.g. ca-certificates-cacert that
installs the cacert certificates without any further involvement of the user.

If you don't want to do this, please explain why.

Regards, Thomas Koch

Please backport lxc to Debian wheezy so that it's easier to test and explore
containers.

I'm trying to get unprivileged containers working, but have not succeeded
yet. Would it make sense to start a debian-containers mailing list?

Maybe it would also be good to:

- - document that kernel.unprivileged_userns_clone needs to be set to 1
- - maybe provide a debconf question to set the above parameter?
- - provide a walk-through for setting up and starting unprivileged containers

Thank you!

I'd like to contribute to emacs in debian by packaging a few modes, but I'm
stalled as long as there are no current guidelines. What do you think about
using triggers? Maybe I could work out a working code proposal.

I had a look in lsb-base how they do text coloring and made a patch.

Bug#296635: suggest emacs-goodies-el and qrfcview

2011-11-13 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: doc-rfc
Version: 20100731-1
Followup-For: Bug #296635

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi,

related to this: I think all doc-rfc-* packages should also suggest the already
existing rfc readers: emacs-googies-el contains an rfc reader for emacs and
qrfcview is a standalone rfc reader.

Related to this, I'd like to suggest a new debian native package rfc-tools or
rfc-goodies that could collect all kind of small snippets around rfcs. Those
snippets should rather not be part of the doc-rfc package because updating a
small bug in one of the snippets would trigger a rebuild and archive update of
hundreds of megabytes of rfcs.

Regards,

Thomas Koch

Bug#648651: ITP: rfc-tools -- small tools to work with IETF's RFC documents

2011-11-13 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Thomas Koch

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Rationale: The doc-rfc package has collected a couple of wishlist issues
suggesting the addition of small helpers. Such helpers however are best
packaged separately to decouple updates to such helpers from the updates to
>100M RFC data.
All doc-rfc-* packages will then be updated to recommend this package.

This package should be a debian native package.

* License : What the fuck license (open for better suggestions)
Description : small tools to work with IETF's RFC documents

This package collects small tools or additional informations that help to work
with Request for comments documents.

 * build Bibtex entries for RFC documents (Closes: #648205)
 * rfc command to quickly open a rfc document given a number or keyword
   (Closes: #296635, #116567, #272826, #31383, #74385)
 * Recommend available rfc readers: emacs-goodies-el and qrfcview
 * This package could also become a build-dependency for doc-ref and include
some of the scripts to download and process data from rfc-editor.org

I'm sure that more ideas will flow into this package once it exists.

Regards,

Thomas Koch

Is there a bug in the tracker of sisu-guice to ask them to work their things
out with Guice and get their modifications included upstream, so that they can
build against regular Guice?

Thank you for working on this,

Hi,

how do I use this ffap-rfc-directories? I'm new to emacs.
I propose however not to use ffap but to just provide system wide standard
settings like

 '(rfcview-index-location "/usr/share/doc/RFC/rfc-index.txt.gz")
 '(rfcview-rfc-location-pattern (quote ("/usr/share/doc/RFC/links/rfc%s.txt.gz"
"/usr/share/doc/RFC/links/rfc%s.txt")))

The ftp locations could be added to the above as fallback.
The doc-rfc package currently doesn't ship the std documents, see #648701.

Bug#627362: [jitsi-dev] Git for jitsi, native Debian package?

2011-11-20 Thread Thomas Koch
Hi,

after a first look, jitsi won't be easy at all to package. I write down my
impressions if others want to look into the packaging and maybe you could help
a bit to make it easier. I'm sorry for any mistake in the following.

Jitsi has a LOT of dependencies, all of them committed as binaries to lib/.
The first thing for a packager (either Debian or Fedora) is to identify all
these libraries, remove them from the upstream tarball and try to compile
jitsi with the versions of the libraries available in the distribution.

This would be easier, if the dependencies would be managed, e.g. by ivy or
maven. Thus each dependency would be clearly identified.

I've found the evil json.org library of Crockford in the dependencies. The
license of this library forbids inclusion in any free software distribution:
http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-legal@lists.debian.org/msg40718.html

Maybe jitsi could be breaken up in smaller parts, separating OS dependent
stuff and optional functionality. Then a debian packager could start with the
core functionality.

The project is a mixed C/Java project. Shared C libraries are also committed
to SVN without information about their origin. It would be much much easier,
if those parts interacting with C code could be seperated from the rest of the
plain java code.

The jitsi SVN contains patches for other projects e.g. ffmpeg. In a
distribution I try of course to reuse the already packaged projects.

I don't know about OSGI, but I believe that it wouldn't be necessary to have
so many repetitive blocks to create OSGI compliant jars. Could the bnd tool
help with this?

What is your opinion? Are you interested to have jitsi in Fedora, RedHat,
Debian and Ubuntu? In this case I think the best way would be if packagers
would first work together with you to do some preparation work directly in
your repository. This in turn would be much easier if you'd use Git.

Best regards and thank you for Jitsi,

Thomas Koch, http://www.koch.ro

Hi Emil,

thank you for your interest. However I'm afraid I don't understand your last
paragraph at all. Anyways, I won't be able to package jitsi alone, since I
only have some experience with java packages but don't know to package C
stuff.

In any case, there are some things that Jitsi should/could/must do itself to
make a native package for Debian/Fedora/OpenSuse doable. I've opened jira
issues for those and linked them from an umbrella issue:

http://java.net/jira/browse/JITSI-996

We can continue to discuss the items separately in those issues.

Json.org is a popular java library to parse and create json string from the
author of the json standard Douglas Crockford. His implementation however is
not free software[1].

[1] http://wiki.debian.org/qa.debian.org/jsonevil

Therefor the Android team did a cleanroom reimplementation of a json library
to be used inplace of the original one.

- ---

I did a git subtree split of the android libcore git repo which contains only
the json code: https://github.com/thkoch2001/android-json-org

Hi Charles,

thank you for pinging me. I've just spend three days on Debian work. Could you
deal with it by updating to 2.5.0 and also set the maintainer to the java
packaging team?

There's also a Git repo at
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/gwt.git
The branch thkoch_patches contains commits to publish the maven artifacts.

I've also filled a bug at Gerrit and asked them to update to gwt 2.5

there's a generic solution in devscripts we can purge the copyright code from

The dead links are still there on the authors homepage:

Maybe these pages vanished with the rebuild of the kernel server some months

I only found:

Bug#693069: ITP: rurple-ng -- learn programming in python with a robot

* Package name: rurple-ng
  Version : 0.5
  Upstream Author : Paul Crowley
* URL : http://dev.lshift.net/paul/rurple
* License : GPL 2+
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : learn programming in python with a robot

Rurple-ng is a rewrite of RUR-PLE[1], a programming learning environment. The
student learns programming concepts by controling a robot. The original
RUR-PLE comes with a self-learning tutorial[2] in several languages that can
also be used with Rurple-ng.

Unlike other programming learning environments, RUR-PLE uses a real world
programming language (python) with no modifications or restrictions. Thus the
student can move directly from programming a robot to real world programs.

Bug#693135: awesomes menu should include xdg desktop entries

2012-11-13 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: awesome
Version: 3.4.13-1
Severity: wishlist

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi,

I wish, awesome would not (only) use the debian menu but show application menu
entries as specified by the freedesktop menu specification[1].

[1] http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest

Thus awesome would somehow need to parse desktop entry files from
/usr/share/applications. I saw two scripts for this on the net:

https://github.com/chouilleur/xdg-menu-to-awesome-wm
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xdg-menu#Awesome

Best regards,

Thomas Koch

Bug#248561: still valid?

2012-12-14 Thread Thomas Koch
Hi,

I just added the following to my /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/mine:

Aptitude::UI::Package-Display-Format "%c%a%M %p %t %v %V";

Now I see, whether a package comes from testing, unstable or experimental.

Compare
file:///usr/share/doc/aptitude/html/en/ch02s05s05.html#configPackage-Display-
Format

Is this a solution of this issue?

I found the closure-compiler in mediagoblins codebase, so I add a dependency

Or would it be possible to build mediagoblin without the closure compiler?

Hi,

launchy currently saves its config file (launchy.ini) and database

The best thing IMHO would be to conform to the XDG directory specification[1].

Bug#689979: git annex ignores gitignores

2012-10-08 Thread Thomas Koch

Hi,

while testing the annex watch command it added the emacs .# files to the repo
although I have a global git ignore file matching them. Also a local
..gitignore file in the repository did not help.

Bug#689981: regular committed files should not be annexed by assistant

2012-10-08 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: git-annex
Version: 3.20120924
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi,

I have annex repos with media files for which annex assistant seems to work
fine. But I also have emacs org-mode repos whose files I'd like to keep under
regular version control. Currently I use dvcs-autosync for the latter but I
would switch to git annex if the assistant would leave files as they are.

Currently git annex watch switches a file to an annexed one after a change
even if it was just committed to plain git.

Best regards,

Thomas Koch

Bug#689981: regular committed files should not be annexed by assistant

2012-10-08 Thread Thomas Koch

Maybe we don't understand each other here: I'd still like annex assist to
monitor regular git files and commit and sync their updates. But if the file
is gitignored I suppose git annex also ignores it and won't act on it.

Bug#690382: provide documentation for org-mode contribs

2012-10-13 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: org-mode
Version: 7.9.1-2
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi,

the org-mode package comes with a number of contribs as provided by
upstream. However those would be much more useful with accompanying
documentation. The documentation unfortunately is not included in upstreams
tarball and I already raised the issue at the org-mode mailing list[1] without
much response.

[1] http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.emacs.orgmode/61383

Still the best thing would be to work together with upstream to get
documentation for every contrib included in the tarball.

Best regards,

Thomas Koch

Bug#685871: patch to enable servlet extension

2012-10-16 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: libguice-java
Version: 3.0-2
Followup-For: Bug #685871

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi,

I created a patch to enable the servlet extension. The patch also moves the
assistedinjection extension in a separate binary package. I propose that all
extensions, especially if they introduce additional dependencies, should go in
a separate binary package.

The patch is still buggy because the Depends: field isn't set correctly in the
new extension binary packages. But I first want to hear your opinion on
separate packages before continuing to work in this direction.

Is there any automatic way how maven-debian-helper might handle the
dependencies or do we need to put them manually into debian/control?

The patch is also pushed to the Git repository in a separate branch.

Bug#684453: blocked by dpkg

2012-10-16 Thread Thomas Koch
control: block -1 by 683547

The dpkg version currently in unstable refuses to build gwt. A patch for dpkg
is already committed to git and a new dpkg version should be uploaded this
month.

However it would also be a good thing to clean up debian/patches. Some patches
introduce changes that other patches remove again.

Bug#678649: Status of gerrit packaging

2012-10-16 Thread Thomas Koch
Hi,

I've been waiting for a new version (with a fix) of apache-mina-sshd to be
released to continue working on the Gerrit packaging. Currently all essential
dependencies are preliminary packaged and available in Git repos:

http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/libprolog-cafe-java.git
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/libmime-util-java.git
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/libmina-sshd-java.git
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/libjpam-java.git
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/libjuniversalchardet-java.git
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/libgwtorm-java.git
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/libgwtjsonrpc-java.git
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/libgwtexpui-java.git

I don't ask for sponsorship yet since we're in freeze and the packages still
need a final review: copyright, pbuilder test, lintian. If however somebody
wants to review and upload them to experimental I'd be more than happy!

These bugs with patches available block gerrit, we just need to wait:

dpkg: 683547 dpkg-source fails on a patch series deleting a file after patching
guice: 685871 servlet extension for guice
gwt: 681923 please install to debian maven repo

The following dependencies are not critical and I'll try to patch them out:

685875: RFP: parboiled -- parser library based on Parsing expression grammars
685874: RFP: libpegdown-java -- lightweight Java Markdown processor library
683642: ITP: gwt-maven-plugin -- maven plugin to compile Google Web Toolkit
applications
607891: RFP: h2database -- relational database management system written in Java

I'll try to get gerrit working before continuing to work on the dependencies.

Best regards,

Thomas Koch, http://www.koch.ro

Bug#690695: no debian version in maven-repo

2012-10-16 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: libjsr305-java
Version: 0.1~+svn49-5
Severity: normal
Control: block 589436 by -1

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi,

thank you for changing the maven coordinates as requested in bug 683632. It
seems however that the switch broke the guava package (a dependency of Gerrit)
which depended on the old coordinates until version 11.0.2-2. The newer
version switched the coordinates to
com.google.code.findbugs:jsr305:jar:debian
but there is no debian version.

I observe this bug when trying to build libgwt-orm-java (ITP) which depends on
guava.

I wonder however how guava could have been built by dak?

In any case I believe that every java library should have a debian
version. What do you think?

Hi,

is anybody working on packaging asm4? I make this an ITP on me for the moment,
but I'd be glad if somebody else wants to do it.
Do you already have a Git repo with the packaging somewhere?

please sponsor my update to libautomaton-java (src: automaton). I moved the
packaging to Git, authorized by the last uploader Michael Banck:
http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-java/automaton.git

The package can be build from git with git-buildpackage. Please tell me if

Bug#691773: install servlet-api also as org.apache.tomcat:tomcat-servlet-api

2012-10-29 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: libservlet3.0-java
Version: 7.0.28-3
Severity: minor

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi,

gerrit (and possibly other projects) refer to the servlet api 3.0 as

org.apache.tomcat
tomcat-servlet-api
7.0.32

I can rewrite this dependency with maven.rules, but unfortunately gerrit also
depends on

org.apache.tomcat
servlet-api
6.0.29

Both dependencies get rewritten to javax.servlet:servlet-api only with
different version numbers. It gets even worse since gerrit is multi-module and
the submodules don't include the version in their dependencies.

Could you please publish the servlet-api also under the above coordinate? I'll
also fill a similar issue for tomcat6 (servlet2.5).

Bug#689045: please consider using Git for packaging

2012-09-28 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: emacs-goodies-el
Version: 35.2
Severity: wishlist

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi Peter,

this package looks like you could need a hand maintaining it. I'm only 34 years
old and so I did not learn CVS nor would I like to. Switching to Git would make
it a lot easier for me and many others to contribute to this package.

Would you be interested in some kind of team maintainership?

BTW: I'd like to have d-mode[1] packaged. It's only one el file. Would
emacs-goodies be the right place or should it go in a separate package?

Hi,

I'm looking around for an educational turtle graphics (logo)

What's the status of packaging the ~new~ version 6.0?

In any case it would be nice, if we could use a VCS, probably Git for this
package. In case I'd be interested in packaging the new version, would you mind,
if I'd start a Git repo for it on alioth?

Description : python based educational programming environment like
processing

Pycessing is an educational programming environment that makes it easy for the
student to produce graphics and do other motivational things. It's modelled
after the java based processing[1].

[1] http://processing.org

@Brendan: I want to look at pycessing and probably package it for
Debian. (It'll then also be available for all Debian based distributions
e.g. Ubuntu). I see that there are many commits in the Git repository on
bitbucket in 2012 but no release since 2011.

Could you do a release in the next weeks?

Bug#693603: RFP: pybotwar -- educational robot battle simulation with robots coded in Python

* URL : http://code.google.com/p/pybotwar

Description : educational robot battle simulation with robots coded in
Python

Your task is to create a computer program to control a robot for the
arena. The last robot alive is the winner.

pybotwar was inspired by the game RobotWar that existed for the Apple ][ in
the early 1980s. However, the method of coding is more akin to the style of
programs used for the FIRST robotics competition, where a particular
user-defined method is called repeatedly (60 times per second in this case)
and must finish in a set amount of time to avoid putting the robot in to an
error state and disabling it.

RobotWar: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RobotWar

FIRST Robotics Competition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIRST_Robotics

- ---

Pybotwar depends on two python modules that are not yet packaged for Debian:

pygsear - http://www.nongnu.org/pygsear
(pygsear makes getting started with pygame simpler.)
http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/pygsear

pybox2d - pybox2d.googlecode.com

Bug#693692: please extract search strings in separate file

2012-11-19 Thread Thomas Koch
Package: devscripts

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi,

from what I saw, licensecheck is just a big collection of regular expressions
and a loop that checks them and outputs tags for each matching regular
expression.

Thus the perl code could be shortened a lot, if those regular expressions and
the tags that they should produce would be split in a separate (two column?)
text file.

In the end, one could easily write licensecheck libraries in other languages
(python?) to run licensecheck more easily as part of other applications.

Bug#685089: vcsh_status could use status.relativePaths=false config

2012-08-16 Thread Thomas Koch

The definition of vcsh_status is:
vcsh_status = cd $(vcsh run "$MR_REPO" git config --get core.worktree); vcsh
run "$MR_REPO" git status -s "$@" || true

I suspect the cd is done to avoid long relative paths in the output.

It could be easier:
vcsh_status = vcsh run "$MR_REPO" git -c status.relativePaths=false status -s
"$@" || true

Bug#639910: giving up to package sbt for debian

2012-08-17 Thread Thomas Koch
Control: retitle -1 RFP: simple-build-tool -- for scala and java projects

I've sent the following explanation to the sbt list and copy it here:

back in february I said that I can't work on packaging sbt for Debian due to
my bachelor thesis. This is over now and I took another look at sbt. I decided
that I won't have time to package it and that it might not worth the effort
anymore.

Packaging sbt for Debian has (still) two major issues:

a) Sbt needs itself to be built. But in Debian we try to minimize packages
with circular build dependencies. I'm sure that it wouldn't be too hard to
extract a minimal sbt that could be build with a simple makefile of shell
script, but this effort would only make sense if upstream would officially
support this.

b) Sbt must be buildable without accessing the net. I found it hard to really
convince sbt to work offline.

I'd have liked to practice Scala by contributing to Sbt, but the total lack of
developer documentation and code comments discouraged me.

Scala has some nice properties that would have made it a nice language for
education. But for several reasons I will only install software on my school
computers that is available from the debian archive.

On the other hand a combination of D and Python might even be better for
school.

I don't know what the priorities of Sbt development are right now. My wishlist
would be:

- Extract code from sbt into independent, smaller projects where it makes
sense.
- Provide developer documentation in the form of inline comments, package
descriptions and external documents if necessary.

Please CC me in replies since I'll unsubscribe this list in a few days.

Best regards,

Thomas Koch, http://www.koch.ro
