I don't think ENOBUFS is quite right; the error is that the already
written temporary file doesn't have the expected length. Also note
that partially successful reads are taken care of by fread(3) [1].
I'll probably use EINVAL.

[1] "fread() shall return the number of elements successfully read
 which is less than nitems only if a read error or end-of-file is
 encountered."

The patch prevents the compilation and use of 'cpudetect' and other

The first subexpression won't catch directories due to "-type f", and
"rm -r" doesn't follow symlinks, so there shouldn't be any difference.

There is no mention of php4-pear-log in the debian-mentors archive
(presumably because you made a typo in <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>),
nor is it listed on mentors.debian.net or sponsors.debian.net. If you
are serious about adopting, you should try each of those, and retry
every couple of months if necessary. For more information, please see
<http://people.debian.org/~mpalmer/debian-mentors_FAQ.html>.

(The WNPP list is read by relatively few people, and is not meant for
requests for sponsorship.)

dcgui build-depends on libgnome2-dev, which depends on libgnomevfs2,
which depends on libgnutls11-dev, which in turn conflicts with
libgnutls-dev. We'll have to wait for libgnomevfs2-dev to be fixed.

Please remove python-slang and woody.

  * Orphaned for 130 days.
  * 6 bugs total.
  * Both have been uninstallable in sid since July due to the transition
from slang1 to libslang1, and no one reported this as a bug.
  * woody is the only reverse dependency of python-slang.
  * Last upstream release five years ago:

  * The previous maintainer concurs:

  * popcon: 86 installations for python-slang and 66 for woody, 15 votes
for both.

Bug#335434: SEMVMX is the lesser evil

2005-10-31 Thread Matej Vela
block 335434 by 336577
block 335435 by 336577

Unfortunately, sysconf(_SC_SEM_VALUE_MAX) is currently unimplemented.

We could use semctl(..., SEM_INFO, arg) and inspect arg.__buf->semvmx,
but this is as unportable as SEMVMX -- semun.__buf is Linux-specific
-- and even less elegant -- thanks to POSIX.1-2001, we'd have to
include our own definition of union semun.

In short, let's fix this in linux-kernel-headers (Bug#336577).

Thanks,

Matej

For SEMVMX. And you're right, sysconf(_SC_SEM_VALUE_MAX) would be a
better choice, but it isn't implemented... Another solution would be
to call semctl(..., SEM_INFO, arg) and use arg.__buf->semvmx, but that
seemed unportable and inelegant (given that, as you note, the caller
must also define union semun).

If the fix is non-trivial, feel free to downgrade this to wishlist,
and I'll change dctc and dcgui to use _POSIX_SEM_VALUE_MAX.

Matej

The BTS is down to a crawl, here's what I sent to Bug#335435 an hour
and a half ago:

Since Daniel Jacobowitz's reply hasn't reached the BTS either, here's
what he said:

> In general, most of these headers are not intended or supported for

The former is not available, so I'll do the latter.

Bug#308783: libxpm4: problems with s_popen (CAN-2004-0914)

2005-05-12 Thread Matej Vela
Package: libxpm4
Version: 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12
Severity: grave
Justification: may allow access to the accounts of users who use the package

The CAN-2004-0914 patch introduced a s_popen() function as a safe
replacement for popen(). Instead of invoking a shell, it splits
arguments on whitespace and passes the command directly to execvp(3).
However, it doesn't handle quoting or redirection, so code like

  WrFFrI.c:339:   snprintf(buf, sizeof(buf), "gzip -q > \"%s\"", filename);
  WrFFrI.c:340:   if (!(mdata->stream.file = s_popen(buf, "w")))

results in a ">" argument and superfluous quotes:

  execve("/bin/gzip", ["gzip", ">", "\"foo.gz\""], [/* 19 vars */])

This completely breaks the transparent compression and decompression.

Furthermore, since gzip processes all arguments regardless of errors, an
attacker can use filenames with whitespace to compress arbitrary files:
(xpmtest taken from )

  # ./xpmtest crab.xpm 'fnord -v /etc/hosts.deny fnord.gz'
  w=28, h=28, cpp=2, cols=6, vmask=, hotspot=0,0
  gzip: >: No such file or directory
  gzip: "fnord: No such file or directory
  /etc/hosts.deny:   -50.0% -- replaced with /etc/hosts.deny.gz
  gzip: fnord.gz": No such file or directory

The above would effectively disable TCP wrappers. The -r option can be
used to compress whole directory trees.

s_popen() also has issues with error handling, signals, and runaway
child processes. All of this has been fixed in X11R6.8.2, though I
don't think they're aware of the security implications (patches at
 are still vulnerable).

Thanks,

Matej

vulnerabilities: CAN-2004-0687, CAN-2004-0688, CAN-2004-0914, and
CAN-2005-0605.

(Note that the patches supplied by X.Org contain several regressions
(#286164, #308783).  Hopefully, Debian's xfree86 package will have a
definitive patch soon.)

Bug#306761: jetty-extra: transition to liblog4j1.2-java

2005-04-28 Thread Matej Vela
Package: jetty-extra

Severity: serious
Tags: patch, sid

liblog4j-java is currently unbuildable (#306739) and likely to be removed
(#263870); please switch to liblog4j1.2-java.  Since extra/plus/src/org/-
mortbay/log4j/CRS.java uses org.apache.log4j.Level, a class found only in
liblog4j1.2-java, you should make the transition in any case.

Bug#263870: Bug#306739: jakarta-log4j: FTBFS: 'enum' is a keyword, and may not be used as an identifier

2005-04-28 Thread Matej Vela
Hi,

The only packages that haven't moved to liblog4j1.2-java are:

 * libjfreereport-java: Upstream comes bundled with 1.2.3, so the switch
   should be painless. Patch at #306754.

 * jetty-extra: Upstream comes bundled with 1.2.6, and uses features
   specific to 1.2; Log4J support is either not used or already broken.
   Naive patch at #306761.

I think we can remove jakarta-log4j as soon as #306754 is fixed.

Thanks,

Matej

Can you still recreate it with 0.14.2.p1.o? Perhaps it just needed a

Jeroen, did you get any reply?

If not, I think we should remove dhcp-dns--it's been orphaned for more than
3 years, upstream abandoned it, and the equivalent functionality is provided
by dhcp3-server.

A more user-friendly approach would be to symlink /usr/share/doc/emacs21* to

the former packages depend on the latter.

Please remove jakarta-log4j. It was obsoleted by jakarta-log4j a while ago,

tests/endtoend.py. Adjusting permissions in endtoend.py is not enough as
$TMPDIR (or even the build directory itself) may be restricted to root.

I'm not sure whether you'd prefer to follow Lintian's lead and downgrade
this to a warning (trivial patch below), or add an --as-root option to force
keeping privileges.

Nice work!

I tried comparing the diffs side by side, but found it too mind-numbing, so
I went and applied the original patches independently on the premise that
we're unlikely to both make a mistake in the same place.

The result of diffing the diffs (and fixing my own numerous screwups :-) is
at . The changes are as follows:

 * Re-added various comments and extraneous whitespace introduced by the
   original patches, to provide context for future backports.
 * Removed duplicate `#include '.
 * _LtxpmHashTableInit: Fixed typo in LessTif's port (s/+=/>=/).
 * _LtxpmParseValues: A part of the CAN-2004-0687-0688 patch wasn't
   applied (s/BUFSIZ/& + 1/).
 * OpenReadFile: Removed two leftover lines.

If you're okay with the above, I can do an NMU.

Thanks!

Matej

Sure, but right now it's easier to fix doc++ that to fix the 5 packages
depending on it. Anyway, I've uploaded a revised NMU verified to work
with all 5; patch attached.
