Bug#403430: libxine1: Upstream bug 1544349 requires pressing "m" key for DVD
Package: libxine1 Version: 1.1.2+dfsg-2 Severity: normal Minor annoyance. I don't see this on the Debian side. Upstream bug 1544349 has affected DVD playback since the move to libxine 1.1.2 (audio lags video by a small amount - on all of my AMD systems I have to press "m" 8 or 9 times to sync audio with video on any DVD. I have tried just about every combination of audio settings I can to try and fix it, including the recommended change of setting a/v sync from metronome to sample. Regardless of the audio driver, sample rate, specifying 44100 or 48000 sample, sample on, off, auto - I have to hit "m" 8 or 9 times to sync audio. Mplayer does not have this issue, so I do not think it is hardware. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.18-3-k7 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages libxine1 depends on: ii liba52-0.7.4 0.7.4-7 Library for decoding ATSC A/52 str ii libasound2 1.0.13-1 ALSA library ii libavcodec0d 0.cvs20060823-4 ffmpeg codec library ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-8 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libfreetype6 2.2.1-5 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgl1-mesa-glx [l 6.5.1-0.4 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libglu1-mesa [libg 6.5.1-0.4 The OpenGL utility library (GLU) ii libmad00.15.1b-2.1 MPEG audio decoder library ii libmodplug0c2 1:0.7-5.2 shared libraries for mod music bas ii libogg01.1.3-2 Ogg Bitstream Library ii libpostproc0d 0.cvs20060823-4 ffmpeg video postprocessing librar ii libspeex1 1.1.12-2 The Speex Speech Codec ii libstdc++6 4.1.1-19 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libtheora0 0.0.0.alpha7.dfsg-1.1 The Theora Video Compression Codec ii libvorbis0a1.1.2.dfsg-1.2The Vorbis General Audio Compressi ii libx11-6 2:1.0.3-4 X11 client-side library ii libxext6 1:1.0.1-2 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxinerama1 1:1.0.1-4.1 X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxv1 1:1.0.2-1 X11 Video extension library ii libxvmc1 1:1.0.2-2 X11 Video extension library ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-13compression library - runtime Versions of packages libxine1 recommends: ii libmng1 1.0.9-1Multiple-image Network Graphics li -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#403430: workaround
Workaround for the issue is to pull libxine1-1.1.1-2 from snapshots and install that. The 1.1.1-cvs packages (june and july 2006) and later introduce the timing problem for my computers (three different AMD boxes). However pulling 1.1.1-2 and locking the package is dangerous for synaptic users. Synaptic wants to remove mildly interesting packages like "kde" once the libxine1 and libxine1-dev packages are locked. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#370186: hal: 0.5.8.1-6.1 still exhibits problem
Package: hal Version: 0.5.8.1-6.1 Followup-For: Bug #370186 With a CD or DVD in the drive, it spins constantly. Is the "fix" adding documentation to /usr/share/doc/hal/README.Debian? It took me a while to find the culprit -- I spent time trying to figure out if it was a problem with acpi, hdparm, etc. I watched a movie on my laptop (HP dv9000z) and when it was done, left the DVD in the drive. The next morning my DVD is still spinning at full speed, REALLY hot, and now makes a grunch noise when I load or eject it that it did not do before. Hmm. Not even two months old. :( I may be demanding for a non-coder who is not skilled enough to submit patches, but IMHO this should be fixed in a better way. Users will not move the example script into place until after they notice the problem and after they identify hal as the problem. At that point their drive may be damaged. Non technical users may not even know about the existence of /usr/share/doc/hal/README.Debian in the first place. As an aside, when I use Nathanael Nerode's script to single out my drive with the info.product string, the DVD spins down. However there are interesting side effects. Opening a konsole window and using tab completion pauses for a sec while the DVD spins up again. After konsole (or some deeper layer in KDE) is satisfied that the DVD in the drive is still there, my tab completion finishes up. This with the working directory on the hard drive, not the DVD. Interesting. When I move the example fdi to disable checks for all CD/DVD's (since there's only one anyway) I don't get the pause issue, but the drive does spin up from time to time (1-5 minutes) to check. lshal reports my hardware as: info.product = 'DVDRAM GSA-4084N' (string) To get the manufacturer as well: info.product = 'DVDRAM GSA-4084N' (string) info.vendor = 'HL-DT-ST' (string) My kernel comes from the buildserver.net archive, to work around some nVidia nForce issues fixed in 2.6.19+. I don't think that has anything to do with it, but it does change things as the 2.6.20 kernel has moved pata drives into the scsi subsystem alongside sata drives. So my DVD is not /dev/hdc, but /dev/scd0. -- System Information: Debian Release: 4.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.20-1-amd64 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages hal depends on: ii adduser 3.102 Add and remove users and groups ii dbus 1.0.2-1simple interprocess messaging syst ii libc6 2.3.6.ds1-11 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libdbus-1-3 1.0.2-1simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.71-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libexpat1 1.95.8-3.4 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libglib2.0-0 2.12.4-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libhal-storage1 0.5.8.1-6.1Hardware Abstraction Layer - share ii libhal1 0.5.8.1-6.1Hardware Abstraction Layer - share ii libusb-0.1-4 2:0.1.12-2 userspace USB programming library ii libvolume-id0 0.103-2libvolume_id shared library ii lsb-base 3.1-23 Linux Standard Base 3.1 init scrip ii pciutils 1:2.2.4~pre4-1 Linux PCI Utilities ii udev 0.103-2/dev/ and hotplug management daemo ii usbutils 0.72-7 USB console utilities Versions of packages hal recommends: ii eject 2.1.4-2.1 ejects CDs and operates CD-Changer -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#389844: khelpcenter uses htdig to build indexes, but htdig is only suggested
Package: khelpcenter Version: 4:3.5.4-2+b1 Severity: minor A minor annoyance. khelpcenter uses htdig to build indexes of manpages on the local system. Before the indexes are built, it will state that the indexes cannot be found and prompt the user to build them. The indexing process does not obviously fail unless you click on the more information button where you will see that htdig "failed" (actually not present to run). Bug#705431: fldigi 3.21.69 does not respect "notify only" rx ID flag
Package: fldigi Version: 3.21.69-2 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, If you enable Reed-Solomod RX ID and set fldigi 3.21.69 to "notify only", fldigi will sitll change frequency to match the ID. (It will also steal the focus, which is annoying when trying to type a bug report in vi.) Note that fldigi only changes frequency, it does NOT change the operating mode when notify only is set. Turning off Reed-Solomon RX ID prevents this behavior, at the expense of notification. Enabling Reed-Solomon RX ID, and turning off the "notify only" flag results in expected behavior -- both the frequency and operating mode are changed to match the received ID. I’m using the negotiate wrapper configured like this: auth_param negotiate program /usr/lib/squid3/negotiate_wrapper_auth -d \ --kerberos /usr/lib/squid3/negotiate_kerberos_auth -s HTTP/proxy.domain.local@DOMAIN.LOCAL \ --ntlm /usr/bin/ntlm_auth --helper-protocol=gss-spnego --domain=DOMAIN.LOCAL The proxy works as intended – authentication happens, and usernames are logged for users that authenticate via Kerberos. However my logs don’t show user names for anyone that authenticates via NTLM. The user name is replaced with an asterisk. I am testing by configuring my browser to use the FQDN of the proxy (which results in Kerberos authentication) or by using the IP address (which results in NTLM). Anyway, cache log does show the username but it is apparently in the wrong location to be parsed into the access log: 2016/03/16 16:38:29| negotiate_wrapper: Return 'AF = * james_zuelow ‘ The correct format for this entry should be: 2000/01/01 12:00:00 negotiate_wrapper: Return 'AF * james_zuelow' This is a problem for me, as my organization wants the username in the log. Researching the issue I found this: http://squid-web-proxy-cache.1019090.n4.nabble.com/negotiate-wrapper-Return-AF-username-td4674765.html In which Amos says this was fixed “a long while back.” My google-fu is not strong enough to discover an upstream fix for this issue though. the NTLM auth binary is part of Winbind, which wasn't picked up by reportbug (I see it says "none" below looking for winbindd vs. winbind). Bug#819102: [squid-users] Negotiate wrappter returns AF = on Debian Jessie
> -Original Message- > From: squid-users [mailto:squid-users-boun...@lists.squid-cache.org] On > Behalf Of Amos Jeffries > Sent: Wednesday, March 23, 2016 11:50 PM > To: squid-us...@lists.squid-cache.org > Cc: 819...@bugs.debian.org > Subject: Re: [squid-users] Negotiate wrappter returns AF = on Debian Jessie > > "--helper-protocol=gss-spnego" configures Negotiate/Kerberos, not > Negotiate/NTLM. > > For Negotiate/NTLM what you need is "--helper=squid-2.5-ntlmssp" > > > Or, drop the wrapper helper entirely and just use: > > auth_param negotiate program /usr/bin/ntlm_auth \ > --helper-protocol=gss-spnego --domain=DOMAIN.LOCAL > > Amos Oh. Thank you! That does resolve the username issue in the logs. I'm still a little confused as the proxy was behaving as if it was doing NTLM anyway. If I used the FQDN to reach the proxy, my username was james_zuelow@DOMAIN.LOCAL as I would expect from a Kerberos authentication. If I used the IP address to reach the proxy, my understanding is that Kerberos would not work (since the principal now did not match), and I would fall back to NTLM. And in that case my username was james_zuelow, as with plain NTLM. And clients that could not do Kerberos at all such as non-domain Linux machines could still authenticate with NTLM username/password. So except for the log format issue gss-spnego and squid-2.5-ntlmssp both seem to work as I intended it to, with Kerberos primary and NTLM fallback. Thanks again & Debian #819102 can be chalked up to user error. James
Bug#848041: request-tracker4 requires allow-blessed in Web.pm
Package: request-tracker4 Version: 4.2.13-4 Severity: important The request-tracker4 package in testing, combined with the Perl packages in testing requires a small edit in Web.pm I run request-tracker4, apache2, and postfix. I've been tracking testing in order to get a newer version of request-tracker4 than is available in Jessie. After upgrading request-tracker4 when I run the unmodified package, Apache generates a 500 internal server error as such: x [31143] [Tue Dec 13 13:29:06 2016] [error]: encountered object '1', but neither allow_blessed, convert_blessed nor allow_tags settings are enabled (or TO_JSON/FREEZE method missing) at /usr/share/perl5/JSON.pm line 154. However a simple addition to Web.pm resolves the issue. I've been running this modification in production without any issues. There has been at least one other person on rt-users that has needed this in conjunction with a Debian install, so I'm fairly sure that this isn't being caused by a local modification. (Unless we've both made the same modification without realizing it.) However Best Practical hasn't responded on: rt-users, so this may be Debian specific. Bug#840780: mysql-server-5.6: 5.6.30 fails with request-tracker4 rt-setup-fulltext-index script
Package: mysql-server-5.6 Version: 5.6.27-2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, When attempting to setup fulltext indexes with request-tracker4 4.2.13-2 on Squeeze, the script will fail when it attempts to create a fulltext index InnoDB table. Running the script looks like this: # root@mis-rt-lnx:/usr/sbin# ./rt-setup-fulltext-index --dba rtuser --dba-password secret MySQL 5.6 and above support native full-text indexing; for compatibility with earlier versions of RT, the external Sphinx indexer is still supported. Which indexing solution would you prefer? (/usr/share/request-tracker4/lib/RT.pm:389) DBD::mysql::db do failed: Lost connection to MySQL server during query at ./rt-setup-fulltext-index line 736, line 2. ## Discussing the issue on the RT User's mailing list, it appears that this problem started to occur with MySQL version 5.6.29 and as I can see still occurs with 5.6.30 as shipped by Debian. Since 5.6.30 was the lastest version available to me, I resolved the issue by adding a Debian Snapshots entry to apt's sources config and downgrading to 5.6.27-2, at which time the script ran perfectly. I see that the changelog for MySQL 5.6.31 includes a fix for MySQL bug #22963169, which I believe is the one responsible for the RT4 setup script failing. I don't see any evidence that MySQL 5.6.31 is in the pipe for a Stretch release, especially with a potential freeze next month. But I believe that sticking with 5.6.30 will render parts of the request-tracker4 package unusable. Thanks! Bug#493752: closed by Steve Langasek <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (Bug#493752: fixed in samba 2:3.2.1-1)
Hi Steve. The 3.2.1 winbindd is still complaining every 5 minutes: I have a 686 Lenny box that I just set up Friday with nothing but the base install. It was going to be my new OpenNMS box, but I will put that on hold so that I can set up the new 3.2.1 debs, join the domain and see if this continues. If it continues with the new box, I'll update the bug. The only thing that sucks about it is that the box is an IBM 345, which is very loud for testing. :( I also have a different issue with winbind after the 3.2.1 update that I will test with the new box before filing a new bug report. Winbind isn't playing nicely with the /etc/init.d script (the script cannot successfully stop winbind, so a restart also silently fails), and there is a very long (4 to 5 minutes) delay on the first winbind authentication (-a or -K) when winbind *is* started successfully. I have Samba in production on Etch, I would like to move to Lenny but I'm worried that 3.2.x is fragile. Although judging from the lack of bug reports, either I'm the only one testing Samba in a 2003 domain, or I'm the only one having these issues -- hence the new 3.2.1 box. Don't worry, your beer is still waiting for you! Bug#496569: Panic action winbind restarts do not cause an auth delay
Just a quick note that I am still getting winbind panic action notices (bug 493752) in my admin mailbox. The panic action script is restarting winbind, but I do not see the very long initial authentication delay. However my test box was up overnight and logrotate ran. I ran a 'wbinfo -a test_user%Password9' and got the authentication delay. Bug#544573: rkhunter complains about unhide-linux
Package: rkhunter Version: 1.3.2-6 Severity: minor When first installed, rkhunter scans will report this: Warning: The file '/usr/sbin/unhide' exists on the system, but it is not present in the rkhunter.dat file. Warning: The file '/usr/sbin/unhide-linux26' exists on the system, but it is not present in the rkhunter.dat file. Since unhide-linux26 is installed automatically with rkhunter, it makes sense to me that it would be in rkhunter's database. The solution is to uninstall rkhunter, and then re-install it. I'm not familiar enough with deb packaging to suggest a fix, but it seems to me that when rkhunter is installed it inventories the packages that are already installed on the machine. But it does not account for packages that are installed in the same apt/aptitude command that is installing rkhunter. Just a WAG on my part. Bug#496569: Problem not apparent in AD environment without trusts
Over the long weekend I took the opportunity to set up an evaluation version of Server 2003 and a contoso.com domain. I then installed Lenny and installed the current 3.2.3 Samba. That version does NOT exhibit the authentication timeouts, unlike the Lenny/Samba 3.2.3 test box I have in my production domain. The difference is that the evaluation contoso.com domain does not have any trust relationships established. My production domain has incoming trusts established with two different domains, each in their own forest. My production domain does not have any outgoing trusts. Both of the incoming trusts are external, and transitive is set to no. Is it possible to tell Samba and Winbind to ignore these incoming trusts? Bug#496569: Mirror image trust relationships
You can close this bug. We got ahold of one of the other domain admins and compared notes about our configs. You can recreate the problem by creating two domains: Domain A, Forest B Domain C, Forest D For domain A, create an inbound non-transitive trust such that users in Domain A are trusted in Domain C, but users from Domain C are not trusted in Domain A. For Domain C, create a similar trust so that users in Domain C are trusted in Domain A, but users from Domain A are not trusted in Domain C. Now nobody trusts anyone but both domains think the other guy trusts them. (Yes, this was an actual situation, no I have no idea why it was set up that way. It predates current admins.) Winbind 3.0.30 handles this just fine. Winbind 3.2.x breaks. If for some reason you need this sort of trust setup, you can tell winbind 3.2.x to use rpc only. If you nuke the broken trust relationship, winbind works as advertised. James -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#493752: Smb.conf
No, I had another 170 odd panic action e-mail messages waiting for me this morning. I've rolled back to the original config. Browsing the samba shares from Windows XP Pro worked with the old config, and continued to work with the new config. Looking in the various log files I see that winbind is successfully authenticating users and groups in the local domain. ACLs work as expected. Getent passwd and getent group both work fine, wbinfo -u -g and -t work fine, net ads testjoin is fine... If I can just ignore all of these e-mail messages, everything is working! I guess I just need to remove the panic action script from smb.conf... :) Our domain is a bit unusual in that we have two trusts that exist solely for Outlook free/busy information. So we do not have user accounts with rights in the other domains, and vice versa. (Yet another reason not to use trusted domains -- no user accounts.) Did something change between 3.0.30 and 3.2.0 with winbind, where this type of limited trust is problematic for winbind? Also, with the syntax changes for the whole idmap rid back end it looks like we're leaving swat behind. For example there doesn't seem to be a way to enter the various idmap config entries. But that's a different issue and an upstream one anyway. -Original Message- From: Steve Langasek [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, August 04, 2008 10:07 PM To: James Zuelow Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Bug#493752: Smb.conf On Mon, Aug 04, 2008 at 09:34:33PM -0800, James Zuelow wrote: > Default is 'allow trusted domains = Yes' so commenting out should be equivalent. > I've reverted back to using sequentially assigned UID/GID. Bug#586009: cifs-utils: mount.cifs will mount as user, but requires root to unmount
Package: cifs-utils Version: 2:4.5-2 Severity: normal I appreciate the new cifs.utils version coming down as I can now mount CIFS shares as a regular user. However I cannot UNMOUNT the shares as a regular user. In the past, this was accomplished by ensuring that both mount.cifs and umount.cifs were setuid root. With the current version it appears that the cifs.utils package no longer includes umount.cifs. Here is an example of the behavior I am seeing: Mount cifs share: ja...@mis-jz-lnx:~$ mount G List mounts: ja...@mis-jz-lnx:~$ mount /dev/sda1 on / type ext3 (rw,acl,errors=remount-ro) tmpfs on /lib/init/rw type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,mode=0755) proc on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755) tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,noexec,nosuid,gid=5,mode=620) /dev/sdb1 on /home type ext3 (rw,acl) fusectl on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw) binfmt_misc on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev) //files.ci.juneau.ak.us/james$/ on /home/james/G type cifs (rw,mand, nosuid, nodev, user=james) Attempt to umount cifs share: ja...@mis-jz-lnx:~$ umount G umount: /home/james/G mount disagrees with the fstab Unmount cifs share: ja...@mis-jz-lnx:~$ sudo umount G ja...@mis-jz-lnx:~$ [this was a success] Relevant fstab entry: //files.ci.juneau.ak.us/james$ /home/james/Gcifs acl,rw,user,noauto,credentials=/home/james/.nt/creds 0 0 I do some file archiving via cifs mounts that are manipulated via script, and the ability to run these scripts as a non-root user is important to me. In the sudo example above, my password had not timed out yet so I was not prompted for one. However when the script runs I would need to present the password, or edit /etc/sudoers to allow the command to complete without a password. Editing the sudoers file to specifically allow unmounting this share without a password is a relatively simple workaround, but I would prefer the ability to mount and unmount as a regular user without that requirement. However when I click on the resulting desktop shortcut to the device, KDE tells me that I cannot mount the share: Could not mount device. The reported error was: mount: only root can do that This definitely worked in KDE 3.5.9 (Lenny), and I seem to recall it worked in earlier versions of Squeeze before the cifs-utils package had it's suid security issue. I expected it to work again now that cifs-utils has it's setuid behavior restored. I'm kind of guessing as to the KDE package I should file against. Package: rancid-core Version: 2.3.2~a8-4 Severity: important Rancid fails to pull configs from our HP ProCurve 5406. It works fine with our other Procurves (25xx, 26xx, 28xx, etc.). It turns out that the problem was that the 5406 does not have a "show system-information" command. It is simply "show system" on that chassis. Luckily, "show system" still works on the other ProCurve systems, so I edited hrancid to change the command it used to pull information. A diff -u output is below, my edited copy is hrancid-5406: ~/rancid-bug$ diff -u hrancid hrancid-5406 --- hrancid 2009-03-08 20:33:03.0 -0800 +++ hrancid-54062009-03-08 20:34:07.0 -0800 @@ -461,7 +461,7 @@ @commandtable = ( {'show version' => 'ShowVersion'}, {'show flash' => 'ShowFlash'}, - {'show system-information' => 'ShowSystem'}, + {'show system' => 'ShowSystem'}, {'show module' => 'ShowModule'}, {'show stack' => 'ShowStack'}, {'write term' => 'WriteTerm'} Note that my error log is very similar to bug 426839. I do not have a 5304XL to test with so I did not attach this information to that bug, but I would bet that it is a similar syntax change. Based on the switches I have here, the "show system" command would be unambiguous for all ProCurve switches, so this change might be something to push upstream. Bug#599154: xine-ui: xine locks up machine while playing
Package: xine-ui Version: 0.99.6-1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system While watching any video over 20 minutes, xine will cause the system to crash. I hear an audible "dee-dee-dah-dun" sound, which I think is the ACPI shutdown sound, or perhaps the hibernate sound. Just after the sound, the video goes black. The video sound continues for one or two seconds, then stops. At that point the system is completely unresponsive. I've tried typing blind to switch to a virtual console to restart the system or restart X, which Google searches indicated might be possible. In my case, it is not. Pressing the power button momentarily to start the shutdown process does not work. I have to hold down the power button to force a shutdown. If I am *not* watching a video with xine, the machine does not spontaneously shut down. I have power settings in KDE set to keep the machine up 24/7 if AC power is supplied. Xine will shut down the machine even if AC power is supplied. I can remove the battery and run on only AC power, and xine will still cause the shutdown so I do not think it is a battery issue. There are no log entries in /var/log/syslog to indicate a shutdown or hibernation took place. The log just stops, and starts again after I power cycle the machine. This is an HP DV9000Z laptop, with amd CPU and nvidia graphics. A similar issue is listed here: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51904 however in my case switching the video away from "auto" (the default) or xv does not resolve the matter. Bug#932212: squid: Squid negotiate wrapper crashes under load
Package: squid Version: 4.6-1 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, We maintain a pair of Squid proxies running on Debian, in a failover setup using ucarp. These proxies are configured to use the negotiate wrapper for proxy authentication, using Kerberos with a failover to NTLM. We upgraded the secondary from Stretch to Buster and tested functionality - everything seemed to work, but unfortunately we did not stress test it enough as we only used a small group of IT staff to test functionality. After upgrading the primary, users started seeing authentication popups, and Internet access through the proxy slowed to a crawl. Initial investigation showed that there was a lack of file descriptors. After resolving that issue, the problem with the proxies remained. Searching the cache log showed numerous “Too few negotiateauthenticator processes are running” events in the log. It appears that when the proxy is under load - between 80 and 100 requests per second at our site - the negotiate wrapper crashes, sometimes as rapidly as every 15 seconds. Doing a quick Google, I found this: https://github.com/diladele/websafety-issues/issues/1141 Which refers to this: https://bugs.squid-cache.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4936 The second link refers to Squid bug 4936. Based on the dates of the Squid bug report, I guessed that 4936 is present in Buster's version of Squid. After a brief discussion on the squid users mailing list ( http://squid-web-proxy-cache.1019090.n4.nabble.com/Debian-Buster-Squid-4-6-1-amd64-quot-Too-few-negotiateauthenticator-processes-are-running-quot-td4687976.html ) it appears that it is. Right now we are working around the issue with an http_access allow all directive that pre-empts our authentication. However, without authentication we also lose the ability to track individual user activity on the Internet. This is an important organizational goal. Also based on the dates of the Squid bug fix and the information from the Debian package tracker, I believe that 4.6-2 in Sid would be affected as well. Thank you! Thanks Amos. The 4.8-1 .debs for unstable do install on Buster (Buster is so new I don't think there are significant differences yet) but it just fails faster, with a new error message. It looks like unstable Squid doesn't like Buster Winbind. I don't quite understand that permission denied error. And since 4.8 will likely not ever be migrated to Buster, I think I'm looking for alternatives anyway.
