Bug#289715: Same already fixed bugs are back rendering Impress almost unusable

2005-01-21 Thread Eric Valette
Chris Halls wrote:
Looking at the stack trace, this is the same crash as reported in 289715 so
I'm merging the bug. Looking at the code, OOo is dealing with font lists
which are likely to be different on your machine to mine, which may be why I
can't reproduce this here. Please can you do the same as I asked the
submitter of #284096 to do:
---
Please download this file:

http://people.debian.org/~halls/openoffice/test/libsvt645li.so.bz2
It is a version of the library that crashes with debugging symbols included.
bunzip the file and copy into /usr/lib/openoffice/program, replacing the file
that is there from the package.

Then, reproduce the crash. When the crash dialog comes up, do not click it
away but instead execute this from the command line (make sure you have gdb
installed)

echo thread apply all bt > gdb.script
gdb -p $(pgrep -u $USER soffice.bin| head -1) < gdb.script | tee oo.log

Please send oo.log to the bug report.
As already reported be me and others, the crash while selecting the
second item of the menu (#284096) has suddently vanished while doing an
upgrade of _apparently_ unrelated libraries. I recorded it in bug
(#284096) But there is still some bugs happening when doing this, as
suddenly, after selectiong the second item on menu, some color for text
on the master slide permanently change on display (not the document
itself because if I close and relaod color is restored ???

The single word color selection (#289715) is still broken for me. I
suggest you insist on someone still having the bug. I would be glad to
downgrade a library to reproduce it but I have no clue of what changed
to make the bug disappear.

Annoying because as stated a bug that disappear may reappear. For me it
something like a wrong pointer that corrupt something unrelated that
depend on libraries size for final placement...

Anyway I would suggest to not merge the two bugs as one is a crash and
another is a wrong behavior.

Bug#284096: Could you check the bug of single word color modification

2005-01-25 Thread Eric Valette
Chris,
I would also like to thank you for taking the time for chasing this bug.
Indeed it seems finally to have something with printing as initially
suggested (or cups server support at least). Could you see if you can
reproduce also the bug #289715 in the same non working condition.

I have indeed added the KDE look and feel package in the mean time which
explains why the bug did disappear.

I extracted the postinst script and run it manually. I have run "sh -x
./postinst configure" by hand, replaced by the maintainer version of I
don't remember what and the bug is gone??? Black magic somewhere.

I (of course!) took the postinst of the failing packages aka tex-common.
(Do not assume I'm stupid please). When I ran "postinst configure" it
prompted a dialog window asking to either keep my installed version of a
configuration file (THAT configuration file name I do not remember) and
I selected replace by maintainer version as I wanted to be sure the
problem was not comming from incompatible version of this configuration
file. The "postins" command suceeded and the "apt-get -f install" after it.

So if the problem was involing only "debconf", I suspect the run by hand
"postinst configure" would have not solved it magically. You can
continue to play ping pong between tex-common and debconf or close the
bug. I guess it will resurface later via another bug.

BTW the bug leading for the change in tex-common 0.9->0.10 looks very
similar as my debconf default config is "dialog/LOW".

The full error message is included in the first post. It was indeed an
error message from debconf. I also serched in the postinst script to
show the line that caused the problem but unfortunately it does not
helps because it depends on dynamic content of a parameter.

When you do "apt-get install --reinstall dialog debconf" and then
apt-get -f install, whitout fixing the problem, I think I can say it did
not change. I also tried to reconfigure debconf with "dpkg-reconfigure
debconf" to put readline instead of dialog but this did not help either.

> In this case, the postinst script failed right while
> loading confmodule, and never got to the file changed dialog.

Correct. I never saw the dialog before running "sh -x ./postinst
configure" by hand. As far as I know, I did not edit any file by hand,
installed several packages which lead to try the postinst procedure
several time without changing anything.

OK. Do not waste your time any further, I have now a fully functionnal
system and as you cannot reproduce this bug, I propose to close it. Use
it as an hint if someone else comes with a similar problem.

I had corrupted debconf database once and yes it can cause problem on
any package but it has been working for months without problem.

I already switched from "xfree86" to "xorg" but that did not solve the
problem. I'm home now but I will try to report as much info as I can.

NB : I have two more problems unrelated problem to report because of
this switch to 6.9.

Bug#308603: kdebase: [KDE 3.4] disk led keep blicking since 3.4 installation

2005-05-11 Thread Eric Valette
Package: kdebase
Version: 4:3.4.0-0pre3
Severity: important
Tags: experimental

Since installation of kde 3.4, my disk led keeps blickink and this is
specifically tied to kde (switching to other windows manager in kdm
the problem disappears).

I have checked that it actually does not write anything to disk as "df"
and especially log or tmp does not grow. So it is a read access. The
problem is severe because on latop it prevents to use the dsik
powermanagement feature.

using lsof, I did not clearly found a possible culprit.

I have now installed the "deb http://pkg-kde.alioth.debian.org/kde-3.4.0/ ./"
on several very différent machines and it occurs on all machines.

Bug#333547: openoffice.org2-writer: Spellchecker only check the content of the first page

2005-10-12 Thread Eric Valette
Package: openoffice.org2-writer
Version: 1.9.125+2.0beta2-1
Severity: important
Tags: experimental

I have a document (that I cannot share) where the spellchecker only checks part
of the frontpage and says spelling complete when the same document using the
windows version is correctly checked.

=> the bugs lies in the Linux/debian port.

Why modprobe another module when all modules are built-in?
(i.o.w. I don't understand the reason for this bugreport)

Because if the modules is not there and modprobe fails then you end up
with an endless loop. Besides all other call in the installer are made
this way.

At least include full message => Franz is ok to fix it and at least it
would be consistent with the other modprobe calls in other SXX init
scripts (e.g. ACPI, udev, video, ...)

Nice job of tracing that!

The installer is not really set up to work with kernels that are
configured totally different from the standard Debian kernels.

If you really have a totally different kernel, you may run into other
issues as well later on in the installation.

Note that "better configured" is a subjective opinion.
For the installer, it is much better (or at least safer) to start with the
configuration the Debian kernel uses. How you configure the kernel for
your installed system is of course completely up to you.

This particular issue is fairly easily avoided, so I have no problem with
fixing it. Please file your bug report against the package rootskel-gtk.

Cheers,
FJP

Bug#289715: openoffice.org-bin: Impress single Word color modification is broken again

2005-01-10 Thread Eric Valette
Package: openoffice.org-bin
Version: 1.1.3-4
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I already reported this bug. It has been fixed once and then seems to
have reappeared. This makes Impress almost unusable because you cannot
change the color of a single word (it loose the word selection as soon as
pointer is on the color selection window).

I'm fade up with maintainers introducing bugs because the binary
official package does work as expected.

This also would result in the bug probably be fixed quickly. As you are

I'm not suspecting anything : I say the bug has been reported then fixed
then reappeared with the exact same behavior. The faulty patch was
suggested by the maintainer and the fact that only few things changed
when I originally discovered the bug. Maybe it is just regenrating the
bianaries that solved the problem due to a buggy development environment.

We did. Chris tested -3 and I tested -4. It works here. And I tried
those steps since I knew you would reeaper trolling if the bug came back
Trolling? Hummm for me Impress is _unusable_ for anything serious (I
mean other than browsing already existing powerpoints slides).

Nevermind that's interesting because :
	1) either you do not "eat your own dog food" and do not use the exact
same binaries/libraries that are in the package (or you distribution is
not up to date. Mine (sid) is updated daily). Have you a recent sid
incarnation?
	2) or the bug is not in the binaries themselves but in the environment.
I will try to see if it also occurs like the previous time on my laptop
as well. But I'm rather confident.

I have the following openoffice packages set :
	openoffice.org
	openoffice.org-bin
openoffice.org-debian-files (BTW this one is not at the same revision
it is still -3)
	openoffice.org-help-en
	openoffice.org-help-fr
	openoffice.org-hyphenation-en-us
	openoffice.org-hyphenation-en-gb
	openoffice.org-kde
	openoffice.org-thesaurus-en-us
	openoffice.org-mimelnk
	openoffice.org-l10n-fr
	openoffice.org-l10n-en

BTW if I purge openoffice.org-kde to see if it makes a difference : no
difference.

Which I again can't reproduce either.
So we need to wait until other report the same bug also so that we can
decide if its you environment that is not normal or average user ones...

I will update my laptop, with today sid and see if the bug is there also.

Then tested : the exact two same bug are there (word color selection
broken and crash in character->character effect).

So you setup is probably more unsusual than average user one's.

BTW as soffice is a multi-threaded application, do you use a 2.6 kernel

case you will use NPTL pthread library implementation (and locking) and
in the other linuxthread threading implementation. The NPTL

Readding the character->font effects crash, it seems that several people

What is the name of the patch that I should have a look at?

Bug#284096: problem depends on Window manager?

2005-01-13 Thread Eric Valette
You are right : only gnome _seems_ to work but in fact it corrupt
something too : the color of the master slide footer title changed from
yellow to black...

I also tested fvwm2 and it crashes as KDE does. Does it ring a bell?
Maintainers could try to reproduce the bugs on KDE if they use gnome as
their favorite window manager...

Bug#284096: Re : Bug#284096: Bug seems to have disappeared

2005-01-16 Thread Eric Valette
I was having this problem previously. Selecting font tab in modify style
Or Format->Character would crash Writer.
This was on a new sarge/sid KDE desktop that I reinstall a couple weeks ago.
So last week (on the 10/01/2005) I was getting this happening with a
document I was writing. Now today for some reason its not occuring.
Unfortunately I don't have apt-listchanges install, otherwise I might
tell if anything I've upgraded since this date might have affected this.

I confirm this chnage. However, single word color selection is still
impossible (see bug #289715) and, from experience, a bug that
misteriously disappear may also reappear...

2006-09-24 Thread Eric Valette

debian unstable
firefox 1.5.dfsg+1.5.0.7-1
printer HP photosmart 8250

As suggested : I removed all the print.xxx from prefs.js and yes it
starts printing again. However the driver for HP photosmart 8250 is a
ghostcript extension used via hpijs package. If I use first the
postscript printer found, It print but only print part of the pages
(like using A3 on physical A4). Then of course trying to use the CUPS
printer gives me the [EMAIL PROTECTED]$$$ paper size error.

Removing again the print.xxx from prefs.js and using the CUPS printer,
this time the page is correctly printed BUT firefox crashes.

This starts getting on my nerves...

I recently discovered after installing udisk2 that all my kde setup (various
machines) fails to mount usb keys. After googling a bit, this is due to
useage of policykit permissions that are not compatible with previous
setup where being member of plugdev group enabled to mount usb keys. Attached
is a pach to fix it.

Using a static group membership like plugdev is not a proper fix, so
removing the patch tag. We didn't use that in udisks either.

I don't care how you fix it provided you fix it without forcing me to
tweak all config on all machines.

2013-12-15 Thread Eric Valette

There you have your problem:
You use policykit-1 from experimental which uses systemd-logind as
backend but you don't have a logind session registered.

An educated guess is, that you don't have libpam-systemd installed
(which is installed by default via recommends).

Which package recommends it? As I have the problem on all my machines I
assume, I got no recommends at all. So please add the recommends before
closing

udisks2 is the wrong package to add such a dependency.

Move it to the right package then and close the bug *only* when the
dependency is corrected then. I have seen many people complaining about
the very same bug.

There is nothing to fix.
If people disable (or don't install) recommends, they should know what
they are doing.

Give me the name of the package that recommends the package you mention.
policykit does not. I just upgraded using experimental without disabling

Bug#732195: Found the dependency chain : I do not understand how I can have systemd installed and not libpam-systemd

2013-12-15 Thread Eric Valette

udisks2 recommends policykit-1 -> systemd -> recommends libpam-systemd

I almost never use --no-install-recommends except explicitly for nvidia
drivers because I do not want to install a binary kernel, and
initramfs-tools. It happened on several machines..

Verified fixed using libpam-systemd!

Bug#728802: calendar-exchange-provider: Impossible to connect to exchange calendar after 24.0 upgrade (it connect but calendar is RO)

2013-11-05 Thread Eric Valette
Package: calendar-exchange-provider
Version: 3.2.0~beta47-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I have an exchange 2010 server than worked well with 17.0.x. I use
iceowl-extension and calendar-exchange-provider debian packages and not
the upstream binary version of the equivalent package.

I can create the calendar but it reamin RO whatever I do and I cannot
fetch existing appointments.

Running tb 24.1, lightning 2.6.2 and calendar-exchange-provider
3.2.0-beta57 on a windows VM on the same machine works with same settings.

Could you update icedove, iceowl-extension and calendar-exchange-provider
to the same version.

Is icedove 24.0 really TB 24.0 or 24.0.1 because 24.0.1 requires lightning
2.6.1 and 24.1 requires lightning 2.6.2...

This is very annoying as I have lost all my apointments. Deinstalling, deleting
calendars, even removing the leftover in prefs.js doesnt fix it.

Thanks,

2014-06-22 Thread Eric Valette
The suggestion to use udisk2 just assumes that you use logind
libpam-systemd and systemd itself which is my case is not possible
because it breaks pulseaudio. Already in the past I had to add a rule in
policikit to make it work for plugdev users.

And I cannot use systemd as it breaks audio on my machines (at least two
I have tried). See #748651.

Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Trying systemd for the frst time this moring and it breaks. It boots, mount
the filesystem and then hang for 2or 3 mins and then I have the rescue prompt.
I looked at the log as per indicated in the help message. Last message was
that a binary /bin/ was missing but I do not remember whch one.

Managed to start network (add to do "ifdown eth0; ifup eth0") and
reinstalled sysvinit-core and booted again.

Tell me what information you need but I have no clue on how
systemd works.

Do all the filesystems listed in /etc/fstab actually exist?

No not the BACKUP file system

Do keep in mind that the no-auto fstab parameter is unknown to systemd,
you should use noauto or nofail for devices which shouldn't block the
boot process.

Michael

Ok will replace no-auto with noauto and restart. BTW I created the
/var/log/journald directory but apprently its a binary file. How can I
see its content?

That indeed fixed the boot problem. I have an error message saying
/bin/plymouth does not exist but it does not harm.

After the boot, the shutdown/restart. I just get a blinking cursor forever
and I shall press the reset button. Bad for disks as I have no clue where
it fails as nothing is printed on console.

Bug#746035: unmounting /var and /usr fails on journal

2014-04-27 Thread Eric Valette
Looking at the log I just found theses messages. As I created
/var/log/journal to be able to read the log after failing boot I may
understand for /var but I have no clue if it will be sufficient to
remove it.

On the other hand if I have to remove persistent log how to debug shutdown?

Please remove the quite kernel command line to get a more verbose log.
I'd also suggest to enable the debug-shell.service.
You can then switch to vt9 on shutdown and examine where the system
hangs with systemctl list-jobs.

The upstream wiki [0] has a section about "Diagnosing Shutdown Problems"
http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/systemd/Debugging/

Please follow those instructions and let us know at which service/unit
the system blocks.

Actually its samba. I have a message that says something along a LSB
startup job is running and it points to smbd and nmbd. Actually even
with sysv init system there is a problem on shutdown as samba stop
script seems to be called twice. Its a bug in samba start stop logic
that was introduced with samba4 probably as I have it actaully on all my
debian machines (more than 5...). I bet it has something to do with

network up script but cannot find where.

There should be a timeout on shutdown, so it shouldn't block forever.

Yes indeed. But it is unusually long!

Bug#739887: Fix is not convenient for sysv users

2014-04-27 Thread Eric Valette
Note that as I was affected by the bug preventing systemd to shutdown at
reasonable speed I removed the dependency lines. It may be fine for
systemd but it is still buggy for sysv init: the shutdown scripts are
called multiple times and thus it make the shutdown slows as it wait
before trying to kill the daemons. It slows down all the machines I have
(and yes I reran insserv after making the change).

I applied the suggested patch, rerun insserv -v but it is still called
twice on shutdown via sysv init. Dunno if it will change anything for
systemd but it still wrong for sysv init. I added an info for the bug
you just pointed out.

Because previous version works fine, so at least it is clearly a regression.

Bug#740942: The very same bugs slows down shutdown sequence on sysv also

2014-04-28 Thread Eric Valette
For the same reasons exposed in the report, stop is called twice on
shutdown for all samba servers leading to a minute wait before using
kill. This is annoying. A bit less because the timeout is less than systemd.

back, pulseaudio does no more hange same thing for Phonon.

Are you sure this is the correct bug? I think this is meant for #748651

Absolutely. It is while I tried to debug this one
that I discovered  #748651 by trying to launch pulseaudio
in debug mode and it was stuck for 2 mins. For the record, I also
suffered #745550  on my home main computer: no sound, kde multimedia
pulseaudio config hanging at launch, but had to leave home for work
before fixing it. Then on my professional computer, I discovered I
had no sound too and that the analog audio device indeed disappeared
as per this bug.

Bug #74865, led me to dbus and as moving to systemd was one of the
main change I did recently on both computers and I know it heavily
uses dbus/udev, I tried to switch back to sysv init and it solved
the problem right away on both machines. I have no clue on the
reason and anyway, the number of bug I have found already using
systemd is huge enough and I will wait a bit it stabilize.

Bug#745550: May be related to systemd

2014-05-27 Thread Eric Valette

On 05/27/2014 05:23 PM, Felipe Sateler
  wrote:

  Hi Eric,

So, let me summarize what you did:

1. After some upgrades, pulseaudio didn't see the analog output, just
the HDMI one.

I just *first* noticed I had no more sound. As in both case I use
analog output and not HDMI (because monitors I use have no
speakers), the cause was probably the same (no more analog audio
device) on the two machines although after fixing it on one computer
I only verified that reinstalling sysinit-core on the second and
rebooting also fixed the problem on the second machine.

2. Around the same time, pulseaudio started hanging on startup,
returning EAGAIN from the system dbus socket

While trying to debug the "no sound", I noticed first kde
audio/multimedia config was hanging on my first machine and later on
my other machine at work that indeed the pulseaudio was stuck for
nearly 2 mins (this probably causing the kde multimedia config panel
to hang waiting for pulse) and that anyway, at the end the analog
audio device was not there.

3. Installing sysvinit-core fixes both issues

Yes on both machines.

Is this understanding correct?

Yes.

If so, I'm still not sure these are both the same bug: (3) could be a
race in the boot scripts only exposed by systemd, unrelated to the
dbus issue.

I dunno if the bugs are indeed exactly the same or two expressions
of a same root cause but they are both fixed when going back to sysv
init. The race in the boot happens on very different type machine
(an old core i5 laptop single core/hyperthreaded with classical disk
4GB RAM and a high end core I7 quad core hyperthreaded with SSD and
16 GByte memory).

Are you willing to try to reproduce the issues again using systemd?
This can be done by passing init=/bin/systemd in the grub screen (no
need to reinstall systemd-sysv). Although I fear we will need help
from the dbus and systemd folks to debug this.

If you do not manage to reproduce the bug I can spend a limited
amount of time at it. The fact that the two machines are very
different may help reproducing it. Maybe you could try to get info
from original reporter to see if his problem is also fixed by
reinstalling  sysvinit-core as an extra hint.

NB: both machines were using systemd 208 from experimental. I dunno
if problem is related to this version of systemd because I'm nearly
100% sure I have been using systemd208 with sound for a while before
it broke the same day after upgrading.

And to be fair about my setup that is *unusual*:  both machines have
a distinct / and /usr (I know this i now considered to be bad for
systemd but the 7.0 installer stills allows that without even
emitting a warning...) , do not use initramfs and self tuned recent
kernels dedicated to the machines with all drivers build-in (except
nvidia one ;-)).

Bug#729659: same here on all machines after upgrade

2014-06-01 Thread Eric Valette

I have exactly the same problem and it starts annoying me quite a lot
because it's happening on all my machines:

qdbus org.kde.kded /org/freedesktop/PowerManagement CanSuspend
false

dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest="org.freedesktop.UPower"
/org/freedesktop/UPower org.freedesktop.UPower.Suspend
Error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod: Method "Suspend" with
signature "" on interface "org.freedesktop.UPower" doesn't exist

of course calling pm-suspend directly works as expected!

Bug#750201: icedove: this version breaks calendar-exchange-provider

2014-06-02 Thread Eric Valette
Package: icedove
Version: 30.0~b1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After upgrading, I can no more access to my exchange calendar. The last
version of calendar-exchange-provider is 3.2.0-beta77 + in git and
apparently development it is no more developped (as of 8 may).

It has been tested sucessfully up to 30.0.a2 and maybe it is just a matter
of updating the install.rdf.

In any case it should conflict with the version in unstable 3.2.0-beta53
so that corporate users may not upgrade until a solution is found.
