Bug#351430: seamonkey for etch ?
Allow me to stick my two cents in, as the person currently representing the SeaMonkey community unofficially. Wherever you post patches that alter the SeaMonkey code, I'd like to at least read them and offer feedback. I'm obviously not in a position to reject a patch, but if changes are being made, we should see which ones can be ported back to mozilla.org as a matter of course for forward-development of mozilla.org products. Firefox 2.0 (and consequently SeaMonkey 1.1) are due to be released within a few months, so now's a pretty good time to keep an eye out for last-minute changes the Etch and Debian communities need. -- "The first step in confirming there is a bug in someone else's work is confirming there are no bugs in your own." -- Alexander J. Bug#350740: new version
On 9/8/06, Hendrik-Jan Heins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: This version of Seamonkey runs entirely on xulrunner. Two comments (without having run it) : (1) SM 1.0.x from mozilla.org isn't designed for XULRunner. (2) There is a project to make SM trunk run on XULRunner. It's called "suiterunner", and I'm doing some small work on it. We'd love to have your help with that! -- "The first step in confirming there is a bug in someone else's work is confirming there are no bugs in your own." -- Alexander J. Bug#351430: Beware the trademarks :-)
http://djst.org/blog/2006/09/27/the-name-firefox-not-allowed-in-ubuntu/ I think we'd be well-advised to pay attention to this. To my knowledge, no one involved in the SeaMonkey packaging effort is replacing logos, but we should be aware of what the debate is about. -- "The first step in confirming there is a bug in someone else's work is confirming there are no bugs in your own." -- Alexander J. Bug#350740: SeaMonkey 1.0.x: I'm willing to provide and "own"
I build SeaMonkey on a regular basis, and I'm currently running Kanotix. If you want me to provide an official SM 1.0.x build for Debian, and to own the process for providing future releases, I'm game. I'm currently compiling SM 1.0.1 now, using the official Linux tinderbox ("hoshi") mozconfig. I also work loosely with the SeaMonkey council, so I generally know what to do on the mozilla.org side of things. I'll need someone to point me to a how-to for putting together a Debian package for release, though. -- "The first step in confirming there is a bug in someone else's work is confirming there are no bugs in your own." -- Alexander J. Bug#350740: SeaMonkey 1.0.x: I'm willing to provide and "own"
Seamonkey packaging should be simpler because mozilla-dev (and probably all other -dev packages) should be dropped, as other packages will use xulrunner. That doesn't apply in this case, because SM1.0.x is based on the same code as Firefox 1.5.0.x, and neither will be ported over to XULRunner on these branches. I'll look over the diff.
Bug#350740: seamonkey packaging
Yes - it compiled, but I haven't tested it yet. Given that I took exactly the source code which the official Linux release has, and the exact configure options, I'd say we're off to a good start. Ping me (not on this bugspam) in about 9-15 hours and we can start walking me through the packaging process. Bug#350740: SeaMonkey 1.0.x: Let's schedule a weekend for this
All right, I am going to be in over my head on this, and I know that up front. I'd like to see if we can rally people together on the weekend of 10 June-11 June (Pacific time zone), on freenode's #mozilla channel. Debian packaging experience most badly wanted. This is the earliest time I can make a dedicated effort to this. I'm thinking roughly 11 am PDT Saturday for starting. Feedback welcome. -- "The first step in confirming there is a bug in someone else's work is confirming there are no bugs in your own." -- Alexander J. You won't get any objection from me. I just want to see it happen. I'm crazy enough to try doing it, but I will take a back seat to an expert with pleasure. Bug#350740: seamonkey packaging
We need to wait for SeaMonkey 1.0.2 to be released first. I don't want to start work with something that hasn't been endorsed yet by the SeaMonkey Council, and SM 1.0.1 wouldn't build for Debian.
Bug#350740: seamonkey packaging
When will this happen? It's not set in stone. SM 1.0.2 is in release candidate phase now; as I understand it, it will be released at approximately the same time as Firefox 1.5.0.4.
Bug#350740: seamonkey packaging
I've got good news. I just saved 15% on my suite release estimates. :-) SeaMonkey 1.0.2 has been released. I'll compile an opt build tonight on my Debian system. From what I can see [1] Firefox 1.5.0.4 is planned to be released really soon now. Please understand that I simply want to have an idea when a package can be expected, so I can make up plans for the rest of the mozilla-related packages. Bug#360671: any progress?
There has. A gentleman from Linspire contacted me over the weekend and indicated he could do the packaging of SeaMonkey. I'm trying to assist him from afar (meaning by e-mail), but I don't know his schedule - or if he's watching this bug. (I think he is.)
