Bug#291502: htop: "F8Nice +" can go above 20.
Package: htop Version: 0.5-1 Severity: normal I repeatedly pressed 'F8' (Nice +) while trying to slow down a piggy task. It goes to 20 and beyond. 'F7' (Nice -) will go under -20 too. Nothing bad happens, eventually 'htop' just rewrites the '25' (or whatever) as a '19'. Still, it'd be better if 'F7' and 'F8' stopped at -20 and 19 or whatever the OS's boundary limits are. Bug#291657: dillo: "Find text in page" box sometimes covers up found text
Package: dillo Version: 0.8.3-1 Severity: normal With examples. First the good: % dillo about:splash ...the splash screen appears. Now hit 'Ctrl-F' and a "Find text in page" box appears. Type "welcome", and "Welcome" in the upper left is highlighted, in blue. Good. Second example; the bug: % dillo about:splash ...the splash screen appears. Now hit 'Ctrl-F' again, and type "these". Nothing happens -- or nothing visible. There's not even an error that the text wasn't found. Because the text is hiding BENEATH the "Find text" box. No visible output after you hit makes you wonder -- where's the target text? is 'dillo' still searching? has 'dillo' crashed? has some other process crashed 'dillo'? It'd be better if the "Find" box either was not above the page, (it might fit in a menu bar or something), or was able to step aside whenever it covered the found text. BTW, very probably 'dillo' isn't the only program that sometimes conceals found text. It may not seem like a bug, since it's doing what it was programmed to do: it finds and hilites text. But for users, sporadic invisible output is an interface bug. Bug#298020: [Parted-maintainers] Bug#298020: Suggested reopen: "298020: parted: hfs(+) support is still poorly documented"
Note: for some reason most of the following lay neglected in my Draft folder for a few months. It'd be difficult, sorry -- I'm not a maintainer, and don't know enough yet about the unofficial libreiser package to know what needs doing. > Well, apart from the above, libreiserfs has been orphaned since ages. Obviously no maintainer wants to support an utterly dead thing, but it's unclear that the reiserfs family of stuff is no more. For example: % zcat /usr/share/doc/reiser4progs/changelog.Debian.gz | head -n 5 reiser4progs (1.0.5-1) unstable; urgency=low * New upstream release. -- Domenico Andreoli <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Thu, 18 Aug 2005 13:00:20 +0200 > > ...and the info page mentions 'reiserfs' dozens of times. I was handed a new 'Mepis' CD by its author at LinuxWorld in Boston this year; it's #5 at Distrowatch today, has an active user base and is well maintained for a liveCD. True, everything on a liveCD is (at first) stored on the CD, but 'Mepis' also includes a user-friendly interface to install itself to hard disk and offers reiserfs as one of its file systems. I've run that installer with reiserfs more than once, it works OK as a painless Debian installer. An inductive and therefore not so reliable argument about reliability: 'Mepis' is a popular liveCD, so its busy user forums should have several horror stories about reiserfs, if that was causing much data loss. On the other hand, if users aren't complaining, then either it's usually not that bad, or nobody ever installs reiserfs. Or after reiserfs new users quit Linux completely, (gulp). > > Suggested compromise: how about I add a paragraph to the man page > > cautioning Debian users about reiserfs' current not officially > > supported status? > > Yep, that would be nice. Alternatively you (or someone else) could fix the > reiserfs situation in libparted ? See attached for man page addition, which also includes my prior patches. In plain text the paragraph added reads: CAVEATS Due to licensing disagreements, support for reiserfs in Debian is unofficial. To get Debian's parted to work with reiserfs requires installing some version of the libreiserfs package, e.g. libreiserfs0.3-0. I wrote 'disagreements' instead of 'conflicts' because it's not clear whether there's an actual conflict or some folks don't mix well. See here for a 2003 wrangle between Hans Reiser and some Debian devels for an example of will over substance: plagiarism of reiserfs by Debian http://cert.uni-stuttgart.de/archive/debian/testing/2003/04/msg00051.html I don't understand what's going on from that; if some reader here has a more relevant URL that gently explains the conflict, please post it. Summing up: Late as can be. Some dislike H. Reiser, others 'reiserfs'; this dislike may lead to accidental exaggerations that have nothing to do with whatever the software's true flaws once were, are, or might be. E.g. 'reiser' hasn't been abandoned, (as of August anyway), and Mepis (not by Reiser) is quite active. None of which has too much to do with a bug about hfs, alas... --- - 2005-09-16 11:44:27.057271000 -0400 +++ /tmp/parted8.gz.11799 2005-09-16 11:44:27.0 -0400 @@ -28,8 +28,9 @@ .PP .B parted is a disk partitioning and partition resizing program. Bug#341769: tcptrack: pause ('p') key doesn't pause
Package: tcptrack Version: 1.1.5-1 Severity: normal The 'p' key doesn't seem to behave the way the man page suggests: When paused (via the p command) no new connections will be displayed, however tcptrack will still monitor and track all connections it sees as usual. Would you say if the following would be what's needed: --- /usr/share/man/man1/annotate-output.1.gz 16:08:58.0 -0500 +++ /tmp/annotateoutput.1.gz.19281 2005-12-06 02:27:58.0 -0500 ...or if that's wrong, (I'm not a maintainer), suggest what the better format should be? Or consider the source code (shell script) that's making the errant diff: zdiff --unified --minimal $MANPAGELONGNAME $EDITABLEMANPAGE > $DIFFNAME ...where $MANPAGELONGNAME is the full path and file name of the man page, and $EDITABLEMANPAGE and $DIFFNAME are just what they sound like and live in '/tmp'. Perhaps there are better ways or tools; if not, once I know the right format I could code something to parse the '.diff' after the fact into something better for patching. If possible, please advise! -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well, I've written then tested some code, (what you suggested, with a kludgy variation of the 'mktemp -d' stuff), that displays it like so: --- annotate-output.1 2005-12-03 16:08:58.0 -0500 +++ /tmp/annotate-output.1 2005-12-14 02:58:27.0 -0500 Note that the date of the original is preserved. Bug#343672: sylpheed: copy/move from Queue folder wrongly puts source headers in dest. body, leaves source headers blank.
Package: sylpheed Version: 2.0.4-1 Severity: important Click 'Compose' fill in a dummy message, then click 'Send Later', and the message is saved in the 'Queue' folder. Now right click to copy or move this message to another folder, like 'Draft'. The resulting copy or move will have blank headers, i.e. "(No Subject)", etc. At least some of the headers from the source message can be seen in the destination message body. Apparently the copy/move seems to lose or misplace information; but just from the 'Queue' folder. Curiously, if both messages (source with correct header, dest with headers in body), are saved to separate files using 'File>Save as...', the two files are identical. Looking for some difference, I created an empty mail folder and copied the dummy message in 'Queue' to it; then did 'File>Export to .mbox file' on both dirs. The mbox files had differences; those are attached: Attachments: /tmp/test2_source.mbx # the Queue folder /tmp/test2_dest.mbx# a temporary folder with just the copy Hope this helps... -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.14-2-686 Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) (ignored: LC_ALL set to C) Versions of packages sylpheed depends on: ii libatk1.0-01.10.3-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libc6 2.3.5-8.1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libcompfaceg1 1989.11.11-24 Compress/decompress images for mai ii libglib2.0-0 2.8.4-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgpg-error0 1.1-4 library for common error values an ii libgpgme11 1.1.0-1 GPGME - GnuPG Made Easy ii libgtk2.0-02.6.10-2 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libldap2 2.1.30-12 OpenLDAP libraries ii libpango1.0-0 1.8.2-3 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpisock8 0.11.8-16 Library for communicating with a P ii libssl0.9.80.9.8a-4 SSL shared libraries ii sylpheed-i18n 2.0.4-1 Locale data for Sylpheed (i18n sup ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3-8 compression library - runtime Versions of packages sylpheed recommends: ii aspell-en [aspell-dictio 6.0-0-5 English dictionary for GNU Aspell ii metamail 2.7-50 implementation of MIME pn sylpheed-claws-scripts (no description available) ii xfonts-100dpi6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 100 dpi fonts for X ii xfonts-75dpi 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 75 dpi fonts for X -- no debconf information >From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sat Dec 10 00:37:16 2005 Date: Sat, 10 Dec 2005 00:37:16 -0500 From: "A. Bug#342296: 'man plotchangelog' typos / compound words; or space versus nothing, more or less?
On Wed, 7 Dec 2005 17:40:33 + Julian Gilbey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Also, "manpage" versus "man page": there seem to be more pages using > "manpage" than "man page", and I personally prefer "manpage" (as it is > an abbreviation for "manual page", not a page for men), so I'm not > going to change these. Either "manual page" or "man. page" might be > better, but the "word" manpage is familiar enough in the UN*X world to > be acceptable on a manpage. It's not in the current dictionaries, perhaps it should be added via a 'wishlist' bug. And some idle thoughts about compound words, (caveat emptor): On unix-ese, slang, and alternate spellings peculiar to computer subcultures, especially new compound words. I see a lot of these, and suspect there can be too much. Reading some man pages gives the feeling that we're going back in time to ancient Rome where they'd write everything that way, (or so I recall reading about somewhere): "QuosquetandemabutereoCatilinepatentianostra", or to Orwell's 1984 "newspeak", or if not time, to some place with a language like German where ad hoc compound words are orthodox. Lately in text passages of man pages I've noticed 'filesystem', 'filename', 'username', 'manpage', 'timestamp', 'backtrace', 'readonly', sourcecode', etc. Meanwhile, some numbers from my system suggest "manpage" is more common: # about how many man pages here? %find /usr/share/man/ -type f -name "*.gz" | wc -l 6273 # how many usages of 'manpage' and "man page"? % find /usr/share/man/ -type f -name "*.gz" -exec zcat '{}' \+ | grep -ic manpage 1276 % find /usr/share/man/ -type f -name "*.gz" -exec zcat '{}' \+ | grep -ic "man page" 1248 But is what's common king? Especially what's common among specialists. If it matters 'man man' uses "man page". I'd say the spaces are formal, while sans spaces is slang adopted from command line syntax. If that's correct, the general question would be whether man pages should be formal documents, or texts with relatively loose standards... or both. And which format would be more widely useful, what's cozy to a subculture may alienate a wider public. A consolation: 'manpage', having no homonyms is simpler to mechanically translate than 'man page'. Math historians seem to agree that the invention of '0' (zero) and positional notation, besides being an improvement over Greek and Roman numeral systems, was a great thing. It seems hard to imagine that it once had opponents. Maybe somebody knows where or when the text space was first invented, if it can be said to have been; compared to zero, it's not as great, but it's surely a very good thing, and comparable in being another bit of nothing that's quite useful. Perhaps one reason the English language is so widespread is that it has fewer compounds than, say German. (Nothing against German, it's just I'm no linguist and wouldn't know what the Top 10 compound loving languages might be, only that German has some. On second thought, some Native American languages have lengthy compounds, and both zoological and chemical nomenclature can get stringy...) On the other hand, English is mostly compounds and I'd hate to be stuck with just one syllable words, and have no beef with slang or colorful dialects. Butwheretodrawthelineorputthespace! We should address as wide an audience as possible, rather than to give preference to specialists who can understand concessions to the general public so much more easily than the public can understand concessions to the specialist. (Still, it's probably futile to resist 'manpage'.) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Bug#342296: 'man plotchangelog' typos / 10 in 1?
On Wed, 7 Dec 2005 17:40:33 + Julian Gilbey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > - putting all the patches in one patch file in one bug report rather > than 10 different ones in 10 different reports I'd agree that a 10/10 ratio seems less than efficient. Here are two fixes; then some hows and whys of the problem, maybe "too much information" (if so skim or skip), but posted for the record. Treating a symptom: for one typo repeated over several man pages in the same package, I could come up with some special code to combine those before sending. Workaround: a script might be devised to combine typo reports from the maintainer side, in any given format a maintainer desired. That is, you'd run something like 'typo-butler foo', and the script would collect all the typo bugs for 'foo', their 'diff' data, and present some interface with a nice overview offering options to weed out dud typos, apply the good ones, write a boilerplate note to the changelog, then close the bugs, etc. (How to design and code these is at present speculative and would probably require plenty of trial & error.) Hows and whys: Combining typo bugs is tricky for packages with many man pages. Example: 'xscreensaver' now includes 141 man pages; last June I filed typos in 30 or so of 'em; some pages had more typos than others. I fear combining all 30 bugs might have made for an overwhelming bug report. Many maintainers, (perhaps a majority, soon if not already), aren't native English speakers; for some evaluating a typo can be difficult. It's not always obvious in advance who's fluent and who isn't. Small portions are easier to digest. Some maintainers, the most talented and energetic even, can be difficult. Bugs are like attacks on their reputation which may be deflected by refuting any flaw in them. The more elaborate the report the better the odds of flaws. Example: if my error rate was 2% and I submit 100 typos in one bug, that'd be two mistakes; a proud maintainer in a foul mood might dispute the two bad ones, (and a few good ones), but ignore the rest until he was pleased or stonewalls and quits trying. Alas, I'm also prone to dispute, which increases the odds of trouble. Keeping things small segregates and minimizes conflict without requiring ideal maintainers. A public BTS is a labor saver for users, and all maintainers are users. It's easier for BTS browsers to understand: 'man plotchangelog' typos: "Alternativly", "approximatly", "displaing", "immediatly", "initaliazation", "innacturate", etc. ...than this: devscripts: several man pages have typos The former subject line lets readers know at a glance the particular man page and gives a preview of the typos. The latter is vague, they'd have to read the bug report. Some maintainers prefer detailed subject lines. Lesser reason: I haven't coded any proper logging into this tool yet, at present those detailed BTS subject headers are needed to check where and what I did, (to say nothing of what others have done), they're a breadcrumb trail. If other folks used this tool or something like it, they would also need to know what's been done. Short of inventing and hosting a special new typo server, (unfeasible with my dial-up ISP), using the BTS for logging works for now. Conclusion: the 2005 BTS probably isn't the ideal server tool for typo fixes. It's better than nothing, and my hope is that given enough of these bugs, it'll increase the problem's mindshare and gradually something better can evolve... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Yes, it helped, but then I got errors for other lines in my 'fstab' so I added " 0 0" to the end of those lines. Now the install works. (And much appreciation for the accurate diagnostics!) Looks like 'yaird' is finicky about 'fstab' formats. Supposing there's a good reason for that... if so it might be better for users if the 'yaird' installer script checked 'fstab' when upgrading or replacing 'initrd' systems, then after finding such malformed 'fstab' lines it could offer to correct those -- but if correcting those was unfeasible, it should advise users that their 'fstab' needs fixing. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#322348: /etc/init.d/apache script wasn't removed by postrm

You "removed" > the package, but didn't "purge" it. (dpkg --purge apache, or purge it > in whatever package frontend you use) According to this definition you're right: not-installed No files are installed from the package, it has no config files left, it uninstalled cleanly if it ever was installed. -- dpkg technical manual 1.2 The dpkg status area /usr/share/doc/libapt-pkg-doc/dpkg-tech.html/ch1.html#s1.2 It logically follows that the opposite of "not-installed", where NO files from the package are present, would be all or some files, even just one. Yet given the next definition (from the same source) I'd be correct: installed All files for the package are installed, and the configuration was also successful. It logically follows from the quantifier 'ALL' that just one file missing would mean the package was not installed, just as 51 cards make an incomplete deck. Seems like the above definitions of 'installed' and 'not-installed' are merely _contrary_, and fail to conform to the common usage of the prefix "not-" as a _contradictory_. Note that my apache 'Status' field quoted above uses the term 'deinstall', which the 'dpkg technical manual' alludes to once, but does not define. Here's a definition: % man dpkg | grep -A 2 -n deinstall | head -n 3 75: deinstall 76: The package is selected for deinstallation (i.e. we want to 77- remove all files, except configuration files). By that usage we were both being vague -- the package wasn't 'installed', (since all files weren't there), and it wasn't 'not-installed', (since some were), it was 'deinstalled'. Unfortunately the prefix "de-" in this context has the common usage of "reversing or undoing", which in this context is virtually what the common usage of "not-" means. Oy vey. Aside from that... Perhaps you were implying that I ought to have purged 'apache' -- I usually don't use 'purge', as old config files sometimes have system specific information that comes in handy. Lastly, for anyone reading this who knows, a question: Does the Debian distro's definition of a "config file" include executables? (My definition would be restricted to inert data, and never code; so '/etc/fstab' would be a 'config file', but any setup or maintenance program, such as '/etc/init.d/apache', would not be.) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#322348: /etc/init.d/apache script wasn't removed by postrm
On 1 Nov 2005 09:07:37 - "Pawel Wiecek" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Does the Debian distro's definition of a "config file" include > > executables? > > Debian definition of config file expressly includes everything in /etc. And > yes, startup script is definitely a config file, since system-specific > configuration can be set there. Thanks for the explanation. So it's expected that some users change their '/etc/init.d/' scripts and they don't want 'em removed unless they '-purge' 'em; result being that none of their tweaks and hacks are ever wiped out without permission. It sounds reasonable. So there's two kinds of users, those that change config scripts and those who don't. Hence bugs (or "bugs", depending on one's view) like this -- the naive users are surprised that config code still runs after its package is removed. Possible accommodation: have packages distinguish between config data and config scripts by some arbitrary flag. When a package is uninstalled (but not purged) it does a checksum test on any of its '/etc' config scripts, and if any were changed, it leaves them all intact, (since they might interact), perhaps with a helpful message to the user explaining this. Whereas if no config scripts were changed, then the user belongs to the no-change group, and the uninstaller deletes them all, as they contain no user data and serve no purpose. Note that this would be on a per-package basis, so that a user might want to change (and keep) the config scripts in package 'foo', but not those of package 'bar'. If it turns out that method would break too many useful things, then about all that I can see for it is to leave the code as is, but somehow improve the docs and prompts so that its behavior becomes familiar enough to seem less surprising. Or a third party helper install util (like 'localepurge') could be written for naive users who want to keep a removed package's config data, but not its config scripts. The util would work as described above, except it'd probably have to distinguish scripts from data on the fly. Or maybe somebody'll write a better 'apt' type program someday, with improved names and data structures... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Flag may be one of ok, reinstreq, hold, hold-reinstreq. Status may be one of not-installed, unpacked, half-configured, installed, half-installed config-files, post-inst-failed, removal-failed. {...} ...so the 'Status(Want)' field is not the 'Status(Status)' field. I've misused the term 'deinstalled', or rather 'Status (deinstalled)'; sorry about that. Despite this goof, and at the possible risk of offending with further errata, I'm afraid your correction has thrown out the baby with the bathwater -- the "baby" being the prior part of my last message about the 'Status (Status)' field terms being merely contrary, despite being written as if they were actually contradictory. To recap, (using some bits just learned about 'Status(Status)' fields), 'Status(installed)' is defined as ALL files present, and 'Status(not-installed)' is defined as NO files present. Those definitions are contrary to each other, but common usage of 'not-' properly indicates a contradiction[2]. Your first post said: "sure it's installed", which does not agree with respect to those 'Status(Status)' definitions. The error very probably stems from confused nomenclature in the "Status: Want Flag Status" data structure. It matters because these nomenclature bugs will continue to confuse users. These probably can't be fixed outright, (it's a bit late to easily change any 'Status(Status)' field names to something better), but the bugs could (eventually) be identified, acknowledged and documented with caveats or warnings where appropriate. NB: this supposed Nomenclature That Breeds Confusion[3] is not an 'apache' bug, but bugs start where they're found. Which is not to suggest that right here is the proper forum to continue to address possible new bugs beyond the point of introduction. By split, I mean abstract it into useful parts, as with the "software tools" school of programming. > Your checker could be important to translate the man pages in a correct > english. That's one of the reasons for it. It's funny, because I sometimes feel as though it were too petty to submit a one-word bug, but when translation is factored in, that one word is multiplied many times; e.g. some poor translator whose second language is English may have to waste minutes verifying that "resursively" isn't a word and should have been "recursively". > > (**for example, it needs a way to know what typos have already been > > reported, otherwise the BTS could be clogged with redundant reports.) > > This is "just" an infrastructure issue. Typo bugs have an interesting property that's unlike most other bugs: they're unambiguous -- every report must include the typo, its location, and its correction. Even using the BTS we now have, it should be possible to search for any given typo bug. It wouldn't be an efficient search, but it needs no infrastructure, and until such an infrastructure existed would be better than nothing. > I can give you an example of what is done in the Debian French translation > team: > * A robot checks which files need to be translated > * Another robot checks what has been done so far (a mailing list, with > special tags is used for that), and whether the patch reported on the > BTS was applied or not. By "HUGE task" you mean translation, right? I'm not sure spellchecking is so huge, or rather maybe it needn't be once the proper tools exist -- but I agree that brute force (manual proofreading) is a huge task. BTW, lately I've been thinking about translation, and had this crazy idea for machine aided translation of man pages; (which may be old and rejected for all I know -- I'm not an expert). The idea, or ideas, as they come to mind: 1) Technical docs are an UNUSUAL type of language because they don't require any ambiguity. All terms and their relations should be unambiguous. So provided we know the "one meaning" of a tech noun, it can be given an exact translation, when one exists. The same should be true of any unambiguous grammatical relation. 2) Computers are (currently) lousy at ambiguity anyway. 3) Make up an ad hoc unambiguous extra detailed tech oriented meta-language, have humans translate a given source text into this meta-language, and have the computer translate that to other human languages, which could then be refined by human translators. What might such a meta-language look like? I'm thinking that if it were based on English, (it needn't be), we'd start with a source line like: "My dog's name is Fido, he likes people." ...and get something like, (only better): "My(possesive pronoun=A Costa, of next noun 'dog') dog(noun, 5 Webster)'s(possesive of next noun 'name') name(noun, 3 Webster) is (present tense verb, 2 Webster) Fido(proper noun, leave alone), he (pronoun masculine=Fido) likes(present tense plural verb, 2 Webster) people(plural noun, 6 Webster)." Every first-order pronoun would be identified with its noun. Any word with more than one sense would be attached to a specific definition in a big dictionary; in the above case "dog(noun, 5 Webster)" would mean "look in Webster's under 'dog', the noun definition, (not the verb), and sense #5 is what was meant." (Note: I don't know if sense #5 in any Webster's is what's needed, it's a fake example.) Obviously just translating it to a meta-language would be like five times harder than plain old translation. What is the gain if it's more work than the old way? The gain ought to be that the computer would then have an unambiguous text it could work with from there, so the time spent translating "upstream" to the meta language would save much more t
