Bug#710108: nmu: dynare_4.3.3-2

2013-05-28 Thread Sébastien Villemot
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: binnmu

Dear Release Team,

A new major version of libmatio has been uploaded, which involves a SONAME
bump. The package dynare needs to be recompiled (a sourceful upload should not
be needed, see #706803).

I included a dep-wait in the following commands, to make sure that dynare is
recompiled against the new libmatio. Sorry for the noise if this is not needed.

nmu dynare_4.3.3-2 . ALL . -m "rebuild against libmatio 1.5"
dw dynare_4.3.3-2 . ALL . -m "libmatio2"

Cheers,

It turns out that this is an obsolete conffile, which this
transitional package should have deleted using dpkg-maintscript-helper
in the appropriate maintainer scripts.

it seems like the original explanation of the patch I provided is
incorrect and it's been a while, so I can't quite remember, how this
came about. :)

In fact the patch fixes the build with "ld --as-needed", which is the
default in Ubuntu and I verified that in the last two releases of Ubuntu
('raring' and 'saucy'), the patch still works as expected.

Have a great day,
 Daniel

on an fresh created sid chroot (sbuild-createchroot) + enabled
experimental repro and installed manually php5 /php5-dev and
pkg-php-tools from experimental.

It seems to work:

/usr/share/pkg-php-tools/scripts/phppkginfo -d debian_deps .

But the d/control in the Debian package (deb) does not contain that

I'll make sure it does, next time I evaluate Redmine 2.x, which might
unfortunately not happen so soon (unless someone backports it, and
Rails 3.x, to wheezy-backports, which I assume is non-trivial a task).

Package: update-notifier

This transitional package should kill any running update-notifier when
it is installed. I was very confused by the fact that one of my
testing machines still had it running and the other not, until I
realised that it was just a long-running process, and that I had
restarted the window manager on the other machine.

And if you run?:
dh_phppear

It seems that the substvars are duplicated because of a extra newline

Dear Maintainer,

I am trying to create debian filesystem images from a script. In this process I
rely on

Thanks for clarifying your approach. This was just my attempt to follow official
recommendations (i.e. searching for sponsors after uploading to mentors.d.o.).
Now knowing, that you are willing to give me some support on this side and that
you preferably work from VCS, it will ease things for me, too (saving this
extra upload to mentors).

Documentation of modules in Tryton always comes with the module. Until now this
generally is doc/index.rst. As the name suggests, this is just the first step.
There are discussions in the project how to improve documentation. AFAIS I
expect this documentation to be in rst format (evtl. sphinx builds). With a
separate doc subdirectory we are prepared in any case.

The document is meant and linked as *policy*. I think (and support), there is
very little humour in Debian, when it comes to policies as DFSG etc...;).
Humour is just not appropriate in policy documents.

Bug#688574: Bug#691115: unblock libdvdread/4.2.0+20120521-3

2013-05-28 Thread John Scott
I just ran into this on a new wheezy install. It's a shame it won't be
fixed in wheezy, although I've looked into it deeply enough that I can
easily fix it locally for myself.

On Sun, Jan 27, 2013 at 7:43 AM, intrigeri wrote:

>

I'd like to second Adam's comments from <
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=691115#10>, which were
that "code outside of the C library should never define __USE_GNU" and that
_GNU_SOURCE should be defined before the first include.

The manual for the GNU C library <
http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/manual/html_node/Feature-Test-Macros.html#Feature-Test-Macros>
states that "these directives **must** come before any #include of a system
header file." (emphasis by them, not me) The directives they are talking
about are the ones with the single underscores, such as _GNU_SOURCE.

Documentation on __USE_GNU can be found in /usr/include/features.h. It says
"These are defined by this file and are used by the header files to decide
what to declare or define." __USE_GNU is defined by features.h iff
_GNU_SOURCE has been defined by the user before the first glibc header file
has been included. As Adam says, it's an internal implementation detail.

As for the status of the patch upstream, do you mean the status of the
patch Debian has added to get libdvdread to build on HURD (and which is the
cause of this bug)? Or the patch to fix this bug? I googled around and
couldn't find any trace of the original patch being submitted upstream. It
doesn't seem to have been applied in their SVN. So they won't need the fix
for this bug.

It does concern me that similar broken "fixes" for building on HURD may
have been applied to other packages throughout Debian. :(

great - I'll install them right away. Then, the biggest problem seems to
be that these fonts are not mentioned as being relevant for Chinese, but
only for Japanese. May I suggest that "apt-cache search chinese" would
turn these up, too?

>really fast !

And I have one little piece of evidence that this will be helpful even
during transitions. I am running Debian testing and have hit a
breakage. The r-base-* packages have now transitioned to testing
(jessie has 3.0.0-2 at the time of writing), and I'm trying to compile
a local R package, only to get the following error:

** byte-compile and prepare package for lazy loading
Error : package ‘mgcv’ was built before R 3.0.0: please re-install it

And sure enough:

polya:~ $ rmadison r-cran-mgcv
 r-cran-mgcv | 1.6-2-1 | squeeze | amd64, armel, i386, ia64, kfreebsd-amd64,
kfreebsd-i386, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, sparc
 r-cran-mgcv | 1.7-13-1 | wheezy | amd64, armel, armhf, i386, ia64,
kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc
 r-cran-mgcv | 1.7-13-1 | jessie | amd64, armel, armhf, i386, ia64,
kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386, mips, mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc
 r-cran-mgcv | 1.7-22-1 | sid | ia64
 r-cran-mgcv | 1.7-22-2 | sid | kfreebsd-amd64, kfreebsd-i386
 r-cran-mgcv | 1.7-23-1 | sid | amd64, armel, armhf, hurd-i386, i386, mips,
mipsel, powerpc, s390, s390x, sparc

So because of the new version in sid, which didn't wait for the R
3.0.0 migration to testing, the jessie version is still an R 2.7
version :-( Had there been a "Provides: r-api-3.0" in r-base-core and
"Depends: r-api-2.7" in r-cran-mgcv, the transition would either have
been delayed or knowingly pushed though in spite of this, but the
breakage would have been caught at the time. (Then again, this might
have been the case anyway.)

Bug#710119: initramfs-tools: Installation with dmraid randomly fails to boot

2013-05-28 Thread Quentin Lefebvre
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.109.1
Severity: grave

Dear Maintainer,

I found this bug described very well in bug #699437, but as the author of the
bug, I strongly believe that the bug is related to initramfs-tools.
My RAID controller is a Silicon Image SiI 3112A SATARaid, configured in RAID1.
I strongly encourage you to read the previously mentionned bug report.

Basically, my box randomly fails to boot (meaning that sometimes it succeds) on
my RAID partition, with the exact same screen as in the bug #688437.

I tried to add a rootdelay=5 option, which didn't change anything.

I'm not completely sure about that, but it seems that the bug only occurs with
kernel 3.2 and not with kernel 2.6.

A patch to handle dmraid better would be most appreciated.

Best regards,
Quentin Lefebvre

It behaves correctly (appart from the duplicate entries solved in 1.5.1).

Maybe dh_phppear is not run. Can you attach the complete build log?

(Sorry, I meant R 2.14 version or whatever the last binary
incompatible version was.)

And I just tried backporting r-cran-mgcv to jessie, only to discover
that the Build-Depends are overly strict; the package itself only
requires R (>= 2.14.0). So it wouldn't build on jessie directly.
Having this API thingy would remove the need for overly strict
build-time dependencies and make back-porting simpler.

| So because of the new version in sid, which didn't wait for the R

There is no such thing as an "R 2.7" API, and as long as upstream does not
define one I do not plan to jump into the frey and meddle with it.

The status quo works well enough, but I will acknowledge the breakage you got
with that r-cran-mgcv package. But I think we have bigger fish to fry.

This is it: I have the guilty commit:

http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=pkg-php/pkg-php-tools.git;a=commitdiff;h=dbfe0c9b6b77f2597223b8b57588a93e7c721dbe

The problem is present onlywith recent debhelper and pkg-php-tools >= 1.4.

Will patch and upload in about 2 hours.

Bug#710120: xserver-xorg-input-mouse: USB mouse is intermittent

2013-05-28 Thread Pierre Crescenzo
Package: src:linux

Since the new testing version (jessie), when the computer is on battery, USB
mouse is OK but, when it is unused during a few seconds it is automatically
disabled and need a few seconds to be enabled again. So, USB mouse is unusable.
(When the computer is connected to electric power, this is OK.)

Pah. If I just change the driver line in my xorg.conf to 'radeon'.,
I get an unusable system.

By dual monitor doesn’t work and it takes 10+ seconds between screen
updates including such thinks as pointer movement. It not really a
usable configuration.

Is there more I need to do to get radeon working ?

Update: there's now an upstream fix in blead at

I guess Damyan is busy; so am I unfortunately.

Given the schedule, I suppose basing this on the SVN merge is the best
approach. If anybody can upload that to experimental, please do. I'm

Oh gosh, my bad (as I said in a follow-on email which crossed in the
post with yours ;-) - replace that with "R 2.14" or "R 2.10" or
whenever the last API change happened.

And I'm certainly not advocating going back and modifying old packages
retrospectively - I'm only looking to the future.

We do have bigger fish to fry, indeed, but if the next API change
happens shortly before the next Debian (stable) release, it will be a
real headache at that point! It seems so straightforward to pre-empt
that possibility with very little effort (add a "Provides: r-api-3.0"
to the r-base-core package and the code appearing earlier in this bug
report to the r-base-dev package); then an "${R:Depends}" in people's
source packages will make everything work perfectly in the future.

Bug#709856: imagemagick: fails to install: update-alternatives: error: alternative path /usr/bin/compare-im6 doesn't exist

2013-05-28 Thread Alban Browaeys
Package: imagemagick
Version: 8:6.8.5.6-2
Followup-For: Bug #709856

Dear Maintainer,
I ended up switching "imagemagick" main package from architecture "any" too
"all" thus making effective the binary-indep debian rule for
"imagemagick" package. Otherwise indeed I was lacking the /usr/bin/*-im6
symbolic links.
Attach is a patch against the git debian repository.
Build and installed fine.

Best regards,
Alban

override_dh_install-indep is not run on non indep packages.
Thus switch imagemagick from Archicture: "any" to "all" as
it does not ship any architecture dependent bits and thus makes
it a binary indep package.

Bug#710126: squid3: Squid3 needs /var/run/squid if using SMP mode with more than one worker

2013-05-28 Thread Sven-Haegar Koch
Package: squid3
Version: 3.3.4-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When using more than one worker process ("workers 2" in squid.conf) squid
wants to create some sockets in /var/run/squid:

$ ls -l /var/run/squid
total 0
srwxr-x--- 1 proxy proxy 0 May 28 13:00 coordinator.ipc
srwxr-x--- 1 proxy proxy 0 May 28 13:00 kid-1.ipc
srwxr-x--- 1 proxy proxy 0 May 28 13:00 kid-2.ipc

If this directory does not exist squid starts, but fails to listen on any of
the defined http_port:

2013/05/28 11:40:33 kid2| commBind: Cannot bind socket FD 15 to [::]: (2) No
such file or directory

As now /var/run is a symlink to /run, which is a tmpfs, we need to recreate
this directory before starting squid.

I propose something like the following in /etc/init.d/squid3:

--- /etc/init.d/squid3~ 2013-05-14 17:46:35.0 +0200
+++ /etc/init.d/squid3  2013-05-28 12:07:03.287783823 +0200

Hi,

I think you forgot a 'Depend: r-cran-rcpp >= 0.10.2' in debian/control. See:

http://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/RcppArmadillo/index.html

You could also add the r-cran-rcpp version to 'Build-Depends' to ease back-
porting.

happy hacking,
Philip

I am with you on that. Looking back, we good a one-year heads-up for R 3.0.0
breaking. At that one point I could (and probably should) have added such a

We'll do it next time for a known "big breakage". We should however not go
overboard and add it for R 3.1.0 just because.

| source packages will make everything work perfectly in the future.

Agreed in principle.

Ping me off-list for help with r-cran-mgcv rebuilds. I tend to just stick
things I need into /usr/local/lib/R/ as it is so easy and not all I need
exists as r-cran-* ...

Hm, why didn't you just follow up in #699437 then? Looks like a bug
with dmraid and if the maintainer of dmraid thinks it's really a bug
in initramfs-tools then he can still reassign the bug accordingly.
So I'm actually tending to reassign/merge this bug report with
#699437. But I didn't go through all the details yet, so I'm just
adjusting the severity for now (doesn't qualify for severity grave
AFAICT).

  I really disagree here.

Upstream is perhaps not interested into defining a proper ABI.
But the fact is that sometimes the R ABI is broken by upstream
and, at this point, all Debian packaging mess up as soon as
either the user do not wait enough for all package to be rebuilt
*or* the user do a partial upgrade from the previous release
(ie mixing old and new r-package on its installation). The
second point (partial upgrade) is something that is supported
by Debian.

R is not the only one software in this case. The most used that
come into my mind is the Linux kernel itself.
Linux kernel maintainers do a great job to ensure, when upgrading
minor version, that modules are still compatible or not.
Maintainers decide on case-by-case bases to bump or not
the *debian-specific* ABI version (they have tools to help them).
The 'current' ABI for 3.8 kernel is the second from the first
packaging of 3.8.x:
linux-image-3.8-2-amd64
^

Moreover, you have all required tools in Debian to do better
dependencies. It has already been discussed in this bug report.
For future breakage, if you want to support only one R version
(as currently), introducing a [debian-]ABI version as a
virtual package would avoid you the need to change the name of
the core R package.
For the current 'transition', as old Debian R-packages only have
a relation of the type "r-base-core (>= X)", the only good solution
I see is:
- rename the r-base-core into another name (r-base-core3 for example)
- r-base-core3 must replace *and* conflict with r-base-core
- all rebuilt Debian R-packages must now depends on r-base-core3
(or better, on r-base-core-debianabi-X that would be a virtual
package provided by the current r-base-core3)

By doing this, you would ensure that partial upgrade between
wheezy and testing will never break user software (either the
upgrade will be refused by apt or all installed r-packages will
be also updated to a compatible version)
Of course, all of this will really works once all packages
in testing/unstable depending on "r-base-core (>=3.xxx)" will
have disappear (ie once all of them will have been rebuilt
with the new dependency).
At this time, partial upgrades between wheezy and testing
will work correctly.

  Regards,
Vincent

Note: is you really do not want to rename you r-base-core package,
you can keep it but you then will need to add a versionned Breaks:
dependency for all previous (before R 3.x) Debian R-packages.
As I know that there exists lots of Debian R packages outside
of the main archive, it seems to me that this is a worst solution
as a rename of r-base-core.

Hi Liang Guo!

Seems that there's a .version file generated at build time, which is
getting on the way, and which would need to be cleaned. Please clean
that file in the debian/rules clean target.

Bug#693604: [Pkg-utopia-maintainers] Bug#693604: avahi-daemon takes 100% CPU right after boot and at every restart of CUPS

2013-05-28 Thread Hagen Fuchs
Hello,

About two weeks ago I replaced all my locally modified packages with
those in testing (which are currently the same version as in stable:
0.6.31-2).

In that period approx. 4000 print jobs have gone over our four print
servers and none of them showed any signs of the aforementioned load
excursion. Previously, not a day went by without going on a hunt for
rogue Avahi daemons.

So, I guess either Avahi's been patched silently or some other condition
remedies (masks?) the problem.

In any case, from my point of view, it would make sense to reduce the
severity or even close the bug report now.

Thanks!

rails is sitting in NEW.

ruby-activeldap is waiting for ruby-gettext-i18n-rails, which is (surprise,
surprise) sitting in NEW.

I think it would be fairly safe to remove both rails and ruby-activeldap
from testing as well instead of waiting for transition from sid to testing
of those new packages, but it's your call.

O.

Bug#710130: RM: libgcgi -- ROM; Upstream AWOL; Obsolete

2013-05-28 Thread Jeremy T. Bouse

Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hello,

As the current package maintainer I see no reason to continue having
this package in the archive.
There is currently no packages depending upon it as I can tell. The
upstream author and website
have been offline now for several years. There is a current bug report
to repackage using 3.0 format
but with no active upstream it hardly seems worth the effort. I placed
a debian/changelog entry in
during my last update on 9/24/2011 stating it would likely be the last
update and request for removal

to be made.

I'm therefore requesting removal of the whole libgcgi stack from
unstable AND wheezy+1.

The affected packages are:

libgcgi0
libgcgi-dev

Bug#710131: maven.pm ignores content of d/maven.properties

Package: maven-debian-helper
Severity: normal

Hi,

in dh build, path to debian/maven.properties file in 'properties.file.manual'
should be passed to Maven as a JVM system property, but the perl script simply
appends it at the end of the command line, making it a Maven property.

Because of this misplacement, content of d/maven.properties is ignored by dh
build.

Please see attached patch.

Bug#710134: python-pip: Please include the CHANGES.txt in /usr/share/doc/python-pip

2013-05-28 Thread Micah Anderson
Package: python-pip
Version: 1.1-3
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

Please add to the documentation installation the CHANGES.txt so that
it is installed in /usr/share/doc/python-pip. This would be useful to
see what upstream changes have happened.

In particular, I was looking to see if some security issues were
resolved, which are noted in the upstream CHANGES.txt.

thanks!

Given that this seems to be quite widespread then (I mean AD is evil,

Bug#704805: Depend precisely on a versionned R API via R:Depends.

I'm wondering whether we're talking at cross-purposes here? As far as
I understand it (and please do correct me if I'm wrong), there is no
intention by upstream to make R 3.1.0 binary-incompatible with R 3.0.0
modules. So r-base-core versions 3.1.0, 3.2.0 and so on should
continue to provide the r-api-3.0 virtual package (and there will be
no r-api-3.1 virtual package).

But let's say that the upstream developers in a couple of years' time
decide that R 3.5.0 will be binary incompatible with modules compiled
on earlier versions of R (as happened with R 3.0.0 and R 2.N.0 for
some values of N). At that time, from the first experimental Debian R
3.5.0 packages (say version 3.4.90-beta1 or whatever it may be
called), there will be a new Provides in the Debian package:
r-api-3.5, replacing the old r-api-3.0. Then an r-cran-foo package
built against r-base-dev 3.3.7-3, say, will have a control file line
something like:

Depends: r-base-core (>= 3.3), r-api-3.0

It will still run quite happily with r-base-core 3.4.2-6 and not need
recompiling, because that package provides r-api-3.0. But when the
binary-incompatible r-base-core 3.4.90-beta1 or 3.5.0 package is
released, it will not be able to be installed alongside the old
r-cran-foo package, because the r-api-3.0 dependency will no longer be
met. This will therefore prevent incompatible versions being
installed simultaneously, and thus protecting against broken partial
upgrades.

Bug#710138: xfce4: Tab completion not working as expected in file selection dialog text entry (Ctrl+L)

2013-05-28 Thread Wirawan Purwanto
Package: xfce4
Version: 4.8.0.3
Severity: normal

I notice that the xfce4 version 4.8 in Debian 7 have problem with tab
completion int he file selection dialog (usually used for File/Open or
File/Save As operations). As for specific examples, I can notice this problem
in LibreOffice (The one shipped with Debian 7 stable) or Firefox Aurora (v 22),
or mousepad --it really does not matter as long the xfce file dialog is shown.
I notice that the first tab completion in the text entry (shown by Ctrl+L
shortcut) would work, but then it would not do the second filename completion.
Say, I want to save a text file in mousepad to /home/wirawan/test.txt ; I can
begin using "/ho"  --> completed to "/home". I would expect "/home/wi"
would complete to "/home/wirawan", but it would not. Rather the focus
moves to the next element ("Places" sidebar below the "Name" and "Save in
folder" entries). So, why is this behavior? This is not desirable from power
user perspective. Unless I misunderstand how xfce file dialog should work.

Wirawan

Bug#710139: RM: gcipher -- ROM; Upstream AWOL; Obsolete

2013-05-28 Thread Jeremy T. Bouse

Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hello,

As the current package maintainer I see no reason to continue having
this package in the archive.
There is currently no packages depending upon it as I can tell. The
upstream author has not released
an update in 3 years now. There is a current bug report to repackage
using 3.0 format but with no

active upstream development it hardly seems worth the effort.

I'm therefore requesting removal of the whole gcipher stack from
unstable AND wheezy+1.

The affected packages are:

This helps a lot. The new patch checks for the space problem
and also some incorrect strings.

Subject: [PATCH] Add checks and tests for short names containing spaces and
short names that are probably meant to be standard values
 but are misspelled or misformatted.

Currently lintian gives no feedback about choice of short name
in debian/copyright, and this leads to use of strings like
"MIT" and "BSD3", which are unhelpful when correlating to SPDX.

So you broke the abi of the package. That needs a proper transition, not
papering stuff over with rebuilds. And it means we also need to do a transition
with libgpgme++. Alterantively, we need to bring it back. If it is abi
compatible with one of the other libraries, we might be able to get away with
a couple of symlinks.

Libraries isn't hard. It just needs a bit of consideration.

Dear Maintainer,
last update of gcc causes FTBFS (in this case, yade package):

I think it is a compiler`s issue.

Bug#710143: transition: libraw

2013-05-28 Thread Luca Falavigna
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: transition
Control: block -1 by 710133 710141

I'd like to request a slot for taking care of the libraw transition.
The new upstream release (in experimental) has bumped soname.

Reverse dependencies

* entangle
* freeimage
* luminance-hdr
* shotwell

freeimage FTBFS (#710133), but upstream already has a patch to fix it.
Also shotwell FTBFS (#710141), issue has been forwarded upstream.

Ben file:
title = "libraw";
is_affected = .build-depends ~ /libraw-dev/;
is_good = .depends ~ "libraw9";
is_bad = .depends ~ "libraw5";

Cheers,
Luca

Bug#710144: sl-modem-daemon: Depends on non-existant lib32asound2

2013-05-28 Thread Jordi Mallach
Package: sl-modem-daemon
Version: 2.9.11~20110321-8
Severity: serious

Hi,

sl-modem-daemon depends on lib32asound2, which is no longer available
in unstable. This dependency probably needs to be replaced by an upgrade
path to a Multi-Arch environment, so amd64 users just use the i386 binary.

Have a look at how other packages in your situation (wine, etc.) have dealt
with this.

Bug#709856: imagemagick: fails to install: update-alternatives: error: alternative path /usr/bin/compare-im6 doesn't exist

2013-05-28 Thread Alban Browaeys
Ok. From commit eccd15b20e14a737b662e1b9e21f6cda015250aa I thought the
move from the symlinks from imagemagick-6.q16 to imagemagick (including
postinst, prerm, menu, and so forth) was done as to include the symlinks
in the non arch imagemagick .
Leaving them in the binary-indep dh_install override and keeping
imagemagick arch dependent leads to them not shipping at all.

Do you wish to keep them in binary indep override and move them back to
imagemagick-6 or move the symlinks into the arch override ?

Thanks for the patch the problem is that the symlink are not arch
neutral and point to /usr/lib/arch

Hi,

i had many unmatched entries while using apparmor and logwatch on my wheezy
system like:

type=1400 audit(1369519203.141:259049): apparmor="ALLOWED" operation="exec"
parent=3733 profile="/usr/sbin/dovecot//null-1c//null-1d"
name="/usr/lib/dovecot/pop3-login" pid=24634 comm="dovecot" requested_mask="x"
denied_mask="x" fsuid=0 ouid=0
target="/usr/sbin/dovecot//null-1c//null-1d//null-d12"
type=1400 audit(1369627891.522:447576): apparmor="ALLOWED" operation="capable"
parent=1 profile="/usr/sbin/dovecot//null-1c//null-1d" pid=3733 comm="dovecot"
capability=5 capname="kill"

because "ALLOWED" is not matched at all.

The attached patch fixes most of them but maybe could be optimized.

Bug#710149: [libpam-tmpdir] Some applications expect ${TMPDIR}/.X11-unix; please create symlink

2013-05-28 Thread Antonio Russo

Package: libpam-tmpdir
Version: 0.09
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
Many applications (for example, the Nomachine NX client)
look for the .X11-unix directory in $TMP or $TMPDIR,
rather than "/tmp". These applications work properly
if a symlink is created:

ln -s /tmp/.X11-unix /tmp/user/${UID}/.X11-unix

This problem can manifest as "Cannot connect to X server :0"
(e.g., nxclient). It also was responsible for interfering
with desktop effects in KDE (frustratingly silently, I might add).

Thanks.
