Bug#695272: libphone-utils0: harmful postrm purge action in M-A:same package

Thanks for your work on this issue.

Introducing a new binary package is a quite big change. Please contact
the release team on whether such a change is acceptable at this point of
the freeze. Note that simply removing M-A:same is also way to solve this
issue and that libphone-utils0 has very few reverse dependencies.

This is not to say that the general approach of splitting the package
would be flawed. To the contrary. So I encourage you to target
experimental or even unstable with such a fix independently.

The new package you are introducing is named libphone-utils0-common. So
when there is a soname bump, there will be a libphone-utils1-common
package. Those packages then share a configuration file. Transferring
that configuration file across packages seems difficult at best. It
might be better to drop the soname from the common package. This is not
without problems though. I suggest to wait for a maintainer response on
this issue.

Unrelated to the reported issue, the code updating the configuration
file could to better at leaving backup files in case something goes
wrong.

Ok, but tomcat6 should be removed for jessie, then.

Bug#631799: [squeeze] Kernel logs "name_count maxed, losing inode data" messages

Sorry we didn't get it fixed earlier.

Sorry to hear that. Would a patch that simply increases the static
number of entries in the names array be an acceptable workaround? It
would decrease the change of hitting this bug.

Perhaps; do you have any idea what the limit should be?

Not really. I'm currently building a test kernel with the limit set to
25 (instead of 20). I'll see if I can boot that kernel one of these days
to see if 25 is enough.

The 25 might be enough for my situation, but other users could of course
need an even bigger number...

We do need to consider that this costs 76 bytes per name per task for
which auditing is enabled, and there are normally hundreds or thousands
of tasks running, so extra names aren't cheap.

What would you consider the upper limit to which we could increase the
number? Just so I know at which limit I can stop building test kernels.

Since you're asking me to make a somewhat arbitrary decision, I'll
arbitrarily decide on double the current limit, i.e. 40.

I've booted a kernel which has the AUDIT_NAMES set to 30. It's been
running for about 12 hours now without any messages (with the Debian
3.2.32 kernel it already logged the first message after 57s uptime).

For now, it seems 30 is enough for my use case. If you're willing to
bump it up to 40, I would go for that.

Thank you for considering.

Rik

Bug#695301: openvpn: Fails to install a logrotate.d entry

That's my experience too. By default 'openvpn' will log to
/var/log/syslog which is handled automatically. If you've set a custom
log file then you must manually add a logrotate entry. I'm not sure
but on restart the log file could also be truncated if you use --log
instead of --log-append.

Bug#695331: SC_Prompt "auth" support

2012-12-07 Thread Gianluigi Tiesi
Package: ssvnc
Severity: wishlist
Tags: upstream patch

I've implemented scprompt "auth" request, used by ultravnc when passing
-sc_exit or -sc_prompt
The relevant code is:
http://ultravnc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/ultravnc/UltraVNC%20Project%20Root/UltraVNC/winvnc/winvnc/vncclient.cpp?revision=753&view=markup

I'm not sure about the use of Swap32IfBE(), but since the ultravnc code is le I
think it should be correct to
use this function.

Bug#695332: Eject and Unmount USB flash drives

2012-12-07 Thread Carr, Michael
Package: thunar
Version: 1.2.3-4+b1
Severity: wishlist

Upon migrating to Wheezy, I noticed that thunar handles flash drives
differently with respect to drives that have multiple partitions. I
routinely use flash drives with multiple encrypted partitions; however,
sometimes I may include a non-encrypted fat32 partition to share/swap data
between different operating systems and different computers. In wheezy,
thunar no longer has the option to just unmount a partition. If eject is
used, then the whole drive gets ejected and disappears. Thus the only way
to use the flash drive again is to reinsert it. In Squeeze, a user was
able to umount / mount partitions and eject the drive when finished.

Here is a link from xfce.org about the issue that Yves-Alexis Perez may
remember:
http://mail.xfce.org/pipermail/thunar-dev/2011-February/004836.html

Question: Is it possible to bring back the unmount plus eject
functionallity?

Here is my particular use case that I am providing in support of adding the
feature back (in reference to the xfce 'ejecting' USB flash drives
discussion):

I volunteer with a non-profit organization and use a single 16GB flash
drive, divided into multiple encrypted partitions, to separate various
types of data. For example, one partition contains business email (active
and archived years), another contains documents, and another contains
working / draft files for various projects. I divide a single drive
because it doesn't make much sense to use a multi-GB drive if the files
will only ever take up a small percentage of the space available. When I
need to access a partitions I will mount it and use until I am finish.
Sometimes, I find that I do need to go back into a partition that I already
have unmounted to add some other files or continue on a project.

I marked the severity as whislist due to the nature of the 'bug'; however,
if a different level is more appropriate then please feel free to change.

Thanks.

Bug#695333: totem-mozilla: Rename package to "browser-plugin-totem" (and other nit-picks)

2012-12-07 Thread Fabian Greffrath
Package: totem-mozilla
Version: 3.6.3-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

in consistency with many other packages in Debian that provide plugins for
mozilla-compatible browsers, please consider renaming the "totem-mozilla"
package to "browser-plugin-totem".

Furthermore, it would be really helpful if the extended package description
could briefly elaborate what kind of plugins the package is all about.
Something like:
"This package contains browser plugins that are compatible to:
 * Shockwave Flash (vegas)
 * DivX® Web Player (mully)
 * VLC Multimedia Plugin (cone)
 * QuickTime Plug-in (narrowspace)
 * Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (gmp)
"
Please note that I deliberately mentioned the totem-internal names of the
plugins to help understand what files are actually installed.

Last but not least, I think it should be seriously considered to ship the vegas
plugin at all. I have not yet found a web site on which it worked properly and
it is currently in the way of better working alternatives. Maybe the "browser-
plugin-gnash" package should get recommended instead, but that's already the
topic of #673667.

 - Fabian

Bug#695334: openarena-dbg: dependency on openarena-server is both insufficient and undesired

2012-12-07 Thread Simon McVittie
Package: openarena-dbg
Version: 0.8.8-5+deb7u1
Severity: serious
Justification: Policy §12.5
Tags: pending

In squeeze, openarena-server contained the dedicated server and
client/server game logic, and openarena depended on openarena-server
for the game logic. It contained an init script for the dedicated server,
but that init script contravened normal Debian practice by being
disabled by default.

In wheezy, openarena contains a separate copy of the game logic
(the required openarena*-data family of packages are so huge that a
second copy of some C code is insignificant by comparison) and no longer
depends on openarena-server. openarena-server's init script is enabled
by default for new installations, with some magic in the preinst to
ensure that it is still disabled when upgrading from a version where
it was disabled by default.

openarena-dbg's directory in /usr/share/doc is currently a symlink
to openarena-server, resulting in debhelper adding a depencency
on openarena-server to ${misc:Depends}. In squeeze, this made sense,
but in wheezy, there are two problems with this:

1) the dependency isn't strictly versioned (Policy §12.5: this results in
   /usr/share/doc/openarena-dbg/copyright not necessarily containing
copyright information for a matching version of openarena-dbg)

2) users who install openarena-dbg to debug an openarena crash, having
never had openarena-server installed, will get openarena-server
installed via the dependency and enabled by default, which is undesired

This is easily fixed.

Reassigning to the kernel.

Can you check which backlight driver is used on the other distros you
mentioned? Also which kernel versions?

Why do you think this is a GnuPG problem? If Mutt does not kill gpg
properly, gpg can't do anything.

Bug#695337: cups: unowned files after purge (policy 6.8, 10.8): /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

2012-12-07 Thread Andreas Beckmann
Package: cups
Version: 1.5.3-2.8
Severity: important
User: debian...@lists.debian.org
Usertags: piuparts

Hi,

during a test with piuparts I noticed your package left unowned files on
the system after purge, which is a violation of policy 6.8 (or 10.8):

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-maintainerscripts.html#s-removedetails

Filing this as important as having a piuparts clean archive is a release
goal since lenny.

I noticed a more significant bug (serious due to Policy §12.5, IMO) while
testing the new version, so I fixed that too, and am following up to this
unblock bug sooner than I'd intended.

Let me know if you want me to back out either of these changes to get the
other one in sooner; the new changes are pretty simple.

(There's no explicit diff to make openarena-dbg not depend on
openarena-server, because it previously picked it up via ${misc:Depends}.)

Source debdiff attached.

I tested this with Debian Sid/unstable with Totem 3.4.2-1 from
experimental and PulseAudio 2.0-6 and gstreamer0.10-plugins-good
0.10.31-3+nmu1.

Apelete, could you please test on the systems you have again and report
back. That would be awesome.

Definitely this should be a separate report.

Bug#695339: uses wrong location for typelib files

2012-12-07 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: gir1.2-guestfs-1.0

Severity: serious

gir1.2-guestfs-1.0 uses multiarch paths to install its typelib file:
/usr/lib//girepository-1.0/Guestfs-1.0.typelib

gobject-introspection does not (yet) support multi-arch, so for the time
being this file needs to be moved to /usr/lib/girepository-1.0 manually.

See e.g [1] and also the gi mini policy [2]

Bug#695340: auctex: xdvi does not understand synctex

2012-12-07 Thread A Mennucc
Package: auctex
Version: 11.87-1
Severity: normal

Ciao Davide,

to reproduce,
1) move away ~/.emacs , just in case,
2) open your favorite LaTeX file with Emacs (23 in my case),
3) select in the menu Command -> TeXing Options -> Correlate I/O
4) run Command -> LaTeX ; by looking with C-c C-l , the command is
   latex --synctex=1 …
5) run Command -> View (say yes to emacs server, hit enter at the prompt)
This last command starts xdvi to view the DVI compiled version

The problem is that xdvi does not understand synctex , it only works
with source specials. So correlation does not work.

Note that the internal variable TeX-source-correlate-method is set to
'auto' by default; if I customize it to 'source-specials' (and save
this setting, and close and reopen emacs — see attachment) then I/O
correlation works fine with LaTeX and XDvi ; but then is broken with
PDFLaTeX and evince(!)

So the solution is to correct the 'auto' method, so that, when xdvi will
be called to visualize the DVI file, then -src-special should be used.

BTW, is there a DVI visualizer that can use synctex? E.G. maybe using
evince for DVI files as well? (I did not check this , since I currently
do not understand what the 'TeX-evince-sync-view' command is…).

2012-12-07 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: gir1.2-urfkill-glib0
Version: 0.4.0-1
Severity: serious

gir1.2-urfkill-glib0 uses multiarch paths to install its typelib file:
/usr/lib//girepository-1.0/Urfkill-0.4.typelib

gobject-introspection does not (yet) support multi-arch, so for the time
being this file needs to be moved to /usr/lib/girepository-1.0 manually.

See e.g [1] and also the gi mini policy [2]

Bug#673328: live-installer does not preserve /var/log; breaks freeradius

retitle 673328 fix live-installer to properly detect errors during tar
extraction
thanks

On Thu, 06 Dec 2012, Raphael Hertzog wrote:
> I had a similar problem and it's probably the same as #652946.

So instead of reassigning it and merging it, we will repurpose
this bug to track the problem that live-installer sometimes
doesn't detect the underlying tar failure and lets the installation
proceed while in fact not all files have been copied.

The problem lies somewhere in this bit of code:

exec 4>&0
tar c . | \
(chdir /target && tar xv) | \
(
while read line; do
COUNT=$(($COUNT + 1))
CURRENT=$(($COUNT * 100 / $STEPS))

[ x$CURRENT = x$LAST_UPDATE ] && continue

LAST_UPDATE=$CURRENT
db_progress STEP 1 <&4
done
)
exec 0>&4

The exit code of the pipeline is the one of the last command, i.e. the big
parenthese. So maybe we could add a check after the loop to verify that
$COUNT >= $STEPS and exit with an error code otherwise ?

[ $COUNT -ge $STEPS ] || exit 1

Cheers,

Bug#695342: Uses wrong location for gobject-introspection files

2012-12-07 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: entangle
Version: 0.4.1-1
Severity: important

entangle provides gobject introspection files and installs them into the
system paths.

/usr/share/gir-1.0/Entangle-0.1.gir
/usr/lib//girepository-1.0/Entangle-0.1.typelib

If those gi files are really meant to be system-wide, they should be
split up into a -dev and gir1.2- package according to the gi mini policy
[2]. Please also not that gobject-introspection does not yet support
multi-arch paths so the typelib files need to be moved (manually) to
/usr/lib/girepository-1.0 for now [1].

Bug#670467: RFP: udev-notify -- Display notifications about newly plugged hardware

Hi,

Nice idea. I'd like to see such functionality in Debian, too. Thanks
for the request.

> * URL : http://udev-notify.learnfree.eu/

Upstream (Cc'ed) already has a .deb package of it, which does work on
Debian, too. But it does not meet Debian's standards yet. At least I
found the following issues:

* Neither copyright nor changelog file
* Mixed up section and archive (maybe an Ubuntu thing)
* No source package at all. Binary package is built by a script
  tools/debian-package.sh plus Makefile
* Embedded code copy of pyudev instead of depending on python-pyudev
* /usr/bin/udev-notify necessarily starts a bash process (should
either use /bin/sh instead of /bin/bash and exec or it should be
replaced by be a symlink to /usr/share/udev-notify/udev-notify.py)
* Missing dependency (either "Depends" or at least "Recommends") on a
notification-daemon. (I don't expect it to work without as it's
stated on the website that a notification-daemon is needed.)

> * License : GPLv3

This information can neither be found on the web page nor in the
source code, just on https://launchpad.net/udev-notify so far -- it
would more convincing if there would be a license mentioned (or
included) somewhere inside the source code.

I'd be glad if upstream would bring their own .deb in shape for Debian
and I'd help with that and would sponsor uploads to Debian.

Regards, Axel

Bug#695282: auctex: error in beamer documents cannot be handled: Error occured after last TeX file closed

Hi Norbert,

are you sure about the severity level? I think this is normal, and I
set it accordingly; feel free to reset it to important if you object
(please, read on before objecting and consider the bug severity level
description @ ).

NP> since 11.87 it seems to me that very simple documents with errors,
NP> when run through latex, auctex cannot display the error place.

I did not (yet) check with 11.86, are you sure it's 11.87 specific?

NP> Take this example:

[...]

NP> Error occured after last TeX file closed

I think you run into a known problem, described into point 8 of AUCTeX
11.87 FAQ:

--8<---cut here---start->8---
  8. Why does `TeX-next-error' (`C-c `') fail?

When writing the log file, TeX puts information related to a file,
including error messages, between a pair of parentheses. AUCTeX
determines the file where the error happened by parsing the log
file and counting the parentheses. This can fail when there are
 other, unbalanced parentheses present.

As a workaround you can activate so-called file:line:error
messages for the log file. (Those are are easier to parse, but
may lack some details.) Either you do this in the configuration
of your TeX system (consult its manual to see where this is) or
you add a command line switch to the (la)tex call, e.g. by
 customizing `LaTeX-command-style' or `TeX-command-list'.
--8<---cut here---end--->8---

In fact, if you check the log produced by your minimal example, you fill
find that there are unbalanced parentheses present (I do).

Note that the proposed workaround works (I can confirm it working here
at my site): if you add the `-file-line-error' option to the LaTeX call,
`C-c `' is able to spot the error (tested with pdflatex, I suppose it
works for latex as well).

Do you think that I should customize Debian to add `-file-line-error' by
default? I'm not sure about what does `may lack some details' exactly
mean, do you know better?

NP> Normal documentclass article documents work without problem.

By looking at the log file I suppose you won't find unbalanced
parentheses there.

In my opinion, the versioned dependency to libev-dev in liblwt-ocaml-dev
should be filled automatically, the same way it is for liblwt-ocaml. But
I don't know how to do it. dpkg-shlibdeps doesn't seem to be designed to
work this way. If so, I would say the bug is on dpkg-shlibdeps's side;
however it looks like a corner case, whose fix looks difficult and
intrusive...

I've put debian-dpkg in CC. Let's see if someone there has a suggestion.

Bug#695343: t-p-u pre-approval syslinux/2:4.05+dfsg-6+deb7u1

Package: release.debian.org

User: release.debian@packages.debian.org

Hi,

I would like to ask pre-approval to upload syslinux 2:4.05+dfsg-6+deb7u1 to
testing-proposed-updates. The debdiff is below.

This version fixes bug #687848 (extlinux-update: fails to correctly update
changed syslinux debian themes). Without this fix, the themes never get
updated (because they are put into a subfolder of the intended location), which
means that the fix for #681426 (syslinux-themes-debian-wheezy:
extlinux/theme.cfg refers to debian-squeeze files), which leaves the system
unbootable, doesn't work.

This bug has been fixed in unstable with the same patch in version
2:4.06+dfsg-3.

Bug#695344: Installs gobject-introspection / library files into system wide paths

2012-12-07 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: workrave
Version: 1.9.909+abc941eb70-1
Severity: important

Hi,

workrave installs gobjection-introspection files and a library
into the system paths:
/usr/lib/girepository-1.0/Workrave-1.0.typelib
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libworkrave-private-1.0.so.0

Those files seem to be package private, so they should not be installed
in the system paths.
Moving them into a package-private directory like $pkglibdir seems
appropriate. See e.g. [1] how this can be done.

When you are installing the typelib into a package-private directory,
you need to adjust the typelib search path. As an example see [2].

Cheers,
Michael

Also, please:

Bug#695345: Please add a check for gobject-introspection packages

2012-12-07 Thread Michael Biebl
Package: lintian
Version: 2.5.10.2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

packages shipping gobject-introspection files should follow the mini
policy outlined at [1].

If they install the introspection files into the system paths, the
.typelib file should go into a gir1.2-foo-X.Y package.
The .gir file should be moved into a -dev package.

There are some simple checks that lintian could do:
1/ Warn if the gir1.2-foo-X.Y package is not in section "introspection".
This section in the archive has been created explicitly for
gobject-introspection files.
2/ Warn if a package installs a .typelib file in the system path without
using a separate gir1.2 package.
This is usually an indication that the introspection files should either
be package-private or be split according to [1]
3/ Warn if the gir1.2-foo-X.Y package has no ${gir:Depends}
4/ Warn if the -dev package has no
Depends: gir1.2-foo-X.Y (= ${binary:Version}). This one is probably
tricky for src packages which build multiple -dev packages.

Cheers,
Michael

Yeah, I had marked it as fixed in icu/4.8.1.1-8 without reassigning, but it
seems that it doesn't work like that.

Yup, that's #689177, which is sid-only.

Mutt doesn't do anything special. I just do a Ctrl-C in the terminal,
which has the effect to send a SIGINT to the foreground process group.
Moreover, the gpg process has a zombie child, and Mutt can't do
anything about that. It is up to the processes to wait for their own
children.

As I told you yesterday evening, this is a known `feature': see #596684,
and see the section `Reverse search: using source specials rather than
SyncTeX' of the README.Debian file.

I think you would like the TeX-source-correlate-method mechanism to be
improved to automatically choose among SyncTeX and source specials
taking into account the output format choice. Therefore I did

`TeX-evince-sync-view' uses D-BUS to communicate with Evince. This is
worth investigating, if we could use evince for DVI files with SyncTeX
support. I will try something as soon as I have some more time, do the
same yourself, please.

Bug#676676: dovecot fails to empty the inbox

2012-12-07 Thread Santiago Vila
severity 676676 serious
thanks

I'm using dovecot-pop3d on a server which has just been upgraded from
squeeze to wheezy, and found this bug as well. I confirm that without

 mail_privileged_group = mail

mail is not removed from inbox.

I'm marking this bug as RC because

a) it should be easy to fix, and
b) I really believe we should not release wheezy with this bug.

According to dovecot documentation:

  /var/mail/ dotlocks

Often mbox write locks include dotlock, which means that Dovecot
needs to create a new ".lock" file to the directory where the
mbox file exists. If your INBOXes are in /var/mail/ directory you
may have to give Dovecot write access to the directory. There are
two ways the /var/mail/ directory's permissions have traditionally
  been set up:

* World-writable with sticky bit set, allowing anyone to create new
files but not overwrite or delete existing files owned by someone
else (ie. same as /tmp). You can do this with chmod a+rwxt /var/mail

* Directory owned by a mail group and the directory set to
  group-writable

You can give Dovecot access to mail group by setting:

  mail_privileged_group = mail

Debian policy clearly follows the second model so dovecot should be
configured accordingly by default.

Thanks.

I was wondering why dput -s is so slow in comparison to the old good

Bug#695221: (no subject)

2012-12-07 Thread Marc Lebel

Thanks Mike and Thomas for clarifying the issue.

The reason I picked Critical was because of it's "description"...

The part that applied to me was "makes unrelated software on the system (or the
whole system)
break" when i loose network connectivity, to me, that is broken.

In my case, the severity comes from a business standpoint. I manage the servers
and someone else manages the network.
In this case, they WILL NOT(Refuse) change the local network subnet just
because of programming errors that will/should be fixed in the future.

The reason why I didn't go upstream (besides not knowing where to go) was that
In another installation of XCP from xensource works fine with my non /24
subnets. Only on Debian do I see this.

So now I feel like this won't be addressed.. I'm sure I am not the only one
with this problem.

I also don't understand what you mean by :
>This doesn't match *at all* your bug report.

>> And I get network access this way.
>> The problem is that my network isn't configured like this and I don't want
>> to change it just to accomodate this setup.
>>
>> I also tried with other subnetmasks such as /25 /26 /27 ... and none of them
>> worked except for /24.
>>
>> Any help is appreciated!
I gave the problem and then the "solution" of what worked.. how does that not
match?

Perhaps I need to be educated on the "debian way" of bug reporting.. I am all
ears..

THat is a good question. If there is no serious drawback in file-line-error
mode, I would activate it. But the statement in the FAQ is s
unclear. Unfortunately I don't know more about this, but I found the
following statement:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-auctex/2010-04/msg1.html

Anyway, the canonical answer to problems with the error parser is to
enable file:line:error messages in LaTeX. And with TeX Live you should
not lose anything from the error message (in contrast to MiKTeX).

Which hints at the fact that activating might be a good idea?

Best wishes

Why is the temporary directory not created in /tmp in the first place?

In equivs-build, line 19, the DIR parameter is explicitly overridden to
the current directory. I guess this is so for a reason... By just
removing this argument, the tempdir location would just end up in /tmp,
an could be naturally overridden with the TMPDIR environment variable
without special handling in equivs itself.

Hi Jakub,

well that's a matter of thinking, right? I know dput (old) didn't
connect to the network, while I chose to connect for real, but don't do
any writings.

That comes closest to my understanding of a simulation. As I understand
the procedure, it is meant to do everything a real upload would do,
without actually doing any actual changes.

That said, I don't mind reverting to the old behavior but I'm not sure
how that's an improvement over the status quo?

Installed bridge-utils so we can reproduce this with Linux bridge.
ii bridge-utils 1.4-5

Test 6 (same test as Test 4) with Linux bridge failed as well.

Our first conclusion right now is that the problem is bridge/openvswitch
independent. Next step we are going

to try is upgrade the dom0 to wheezy and try again.

There's no security archive for Wheezy right now, so this need to go
through testing-proposed-updates. Please get contact with the release
team to get approval request.

I did also see the message from bug 50011 (" Will use DMA mode even
though HW doesn't fully claim to support it.") occasionally after
messing things up with the setpci calls from above. This message never
appeared isolated for me though, but only in conjunction with "error
-110 whilst initialising SD card".

Bug 43370 does does not seem to deal with the same issue, given my
reader is detected, and also reports back when a card was inserted.

By the way: I tried another card today (same type, same manufacturer)
which seems to work fine. The "bad" card, however, works without
problems at all on my Rasperry Pi.

I don't think that makes too much sense. You don't use a simulation as
an eventual outcome of your option. Typically you'd simulate an upload
if you want to make sure things are all right and your setup works.

Hence, having a a (per-profile) option key to configure the simulation
behavior seems quite orthogonal to its use case. A command line switch
overriding or defining the behavior might be more useful in such a case.
I am thinking of a "degree of simulation" type argument, akin to -vvv
for "even more verbose" settings, or our -dd switch.

If that's worth the effort is another discussion.

Bug#695352: apt: incorrect behavior/documentation concerning foreign architectures for sources.list / apt-get update

2012-12-07 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: apt
Version: 0.9.7.6
Severity: normal

In order to get i386 packages from unstable on my amd64 machine,
I added the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list according to
what the sourceslist(5) man page says:

deb [ arch=i386 ] http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable main contrib non-free

But after that and "apt-get update", I still got:

# apt-get install libc6-dbg:i386
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package libc6-dbg

I've been suggested to run "dpkg --add-architecture i386". Then after
an "apt-get update", "apt-get install libc6-dbg:i386" works, but there
are several drawbacks:

1. All i386 Packages files are downloaded by "apt-get update", not
just those in unstable ("dpkg --add-architecture i386" adds i386
to APT::Architectures, hence the problem).

2. I get warnings at the end of "apt-get update":

W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable/main
i386 Packages
(/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.debian.org_debian_dists_unstable_main_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable/contrib
i386 Packages
(/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.debian.org_debian_dists_unstable_contrib_binary-i386_Packages)
W: Duplicate sources.list entry http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ unstable/non-free
i386 Packages
(/var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.debian.org_debian_dists_unstable_non-free_binary-i386_Packages)
W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems

This may be due to the above line I added, but this isn't really
a duplicate as one may want to specify i386 explicitly in the
/etc/apt/sources.list file. The last line "You may want to run
apt-get update to correct these problems" is incorrect (running
"apt-get update" should never output such a message, since it
suggests to do what one has just done).

Anyway since i386 was specified explicitly in the deb line above,
adding i386 to APT::Architectures via "dpkg --add-architecture i386"
should not have been necessary. If there is anything else to do
without using "dpkg --add-architecture i386" (to avoid its drawbacks),
then it should be documented.

Bug#695353: tumbler: Unable to umount devices

2012-12-07 Thread Thanatermesis
Package: tumbler
Version: 0.1.25-1+b1
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

There's a lot of cases that I'm simply unable to umount pluggable devices (usb
sticks, usb hard disks, etc...), I found that the cause is a remaining
(zombie?) process of "tumblerd", by doing "killall tumblerd" i can then umount
the devices

I marked the severity as important because a common user without
advanced knowledges will be simply not able to umount their devices,
forcing him to unplug it manually without mount, this will lead to
corrupted data which imho is absolutely unacceptable, specially for a
stable release of debian.

Thanks

Bug#680095: iceweasel: Iceweasel consumes 50-80% cpu when idling

2012-12-07 Thread Pierre M.
Package: iceweasel
Version: 10.0.11esr-1
Followup-For: Bug #680095

Dear Maintainer,

iceweasel stills uses ~70% CPU when idleing according to "top".
Even after hibernate-defreeze.
The cooling fan noise is a pain. I wonder how other Debian users do ? Any clue
to help me ?
Thanks in advance.

P.M.

After doing that and "apt-get update" again, I could install
libc6-dbg:i386, and valgrind now works with i386 executables.

IMHO, the valgrind error message should be corrected (completed)
concerning the particular case of 32-bit executables (or more
generally foreign architecture?).

Note: "dpkg --add-architecture i386" has some drawbacks and it
shouldn't be needed according to the sources.list(5) man page;
I've reported a bug about that (#695352).

Bug#695354: tcc: please provide a Multi-Arch: foreign interface

2012-12-07 Thread Helmut Grohne
Package: tcc
Version: 0.9.26~git20120612.ad5f375-6
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch
User: multiarch-de...@lists.alioth.debian.org
Usertags: multiarch

Please provide a Multi-Arch version of tcc. Since tcc provides a command
line interface the only meaningful option is foreign. However the files
tcc creates are architecture dependent. So the only way to achieve
M-A:foreign is to provide multiple packages with disjoint contents. The
way this works in crossbuilding is to prefix the compiler with the
architecture triplet. So on amd64 tcc would be called
x86_64-linux-gnu-tcc. Since different architectures use different names
multiple packages can coexist and be marked M-A:foreign.

The attached patch introduces a new binary package tcc-$debianarch. This
package is only built for DEB_HOST_ARCH == DEB_BUILD_ARCH. So the total
increase on packages in 1 per architecture. The new package ships the
compiler binary and is marked M-A:foreign. The original tcc package now
depends on tcc-$debianarch and ships a compatibility symlink tcc ->
$triplet-tcc to retain the original interface. Of course the tcc package
cannot be marked Multi-Arch in any way.

The patch can later be extended to also build cross compilers (i.e.
DEB_HOST_ARCH != DE_BUILD_ARCH). Those can be added on demand. Also note
that this patch obsoletes bug #673380 since tcc-amd64 and tcc-i386 can
be installed simultaneously.

One motivation to doing this work is to showcase the necessary work to
turn the gcc package into a full fledged cross compiler. See #666743.

Thanks to Thomas Preud'homme for bringing my attention to this lovely
package.

Oh, sorry, I only wanted to show that it can build satisfactorily.

32-bit PowerPC Linux (powerpc port) uses "SVR4 ABI", but 64-bit PowerPC Linux
(ppc64 port) uses "64-bit PowerPC ELF ABI".
http://refspecs.linuxfoundation.org/ELF/ppc64/PPC-elf64abi.html

In 64-bit PowerPC ELF ABI, function descriptors are found in data section.

Do you ask me for the justification for existence of libxatracker1 package in
mesa source?

Hmmm,
In order to get maintainers' refereeing and judgment that this patch should be
sent to upstream,
I contributed to BTS.
Do you say that it shoudn't be sent to upstream?

It would be helpful for mime-support to be marked Multi-Arch: foreign,
in order that it can satisfy dependencies of foreign-architecture
binaries: python2.7 in particular comes to mind (once it's converted to
multiarch, which is in progress). I believe that this is a blocker for
cross-building any package that build-depends on python.

If you're wondering why this is necessary for an Architecture: all

Bug#631669: liblwt-ocaml-dev: undefined references to libev

2012-12-07 Thread Guillem Jover
Hi!

I've read the bug report for some context. Something unrelated to
this query I'd like to point out is that there's really nothing
inherently wrong with having more than one SONAME installed for the
same shared library, and having a single libfoo-dev. If libfooN and
libfooN+1 were not co-installable that would make transitions very
painful.

I don't think this should be solved by dpkg-shlibdeps, because this
kind of dependency (in most cases) does not involve directly a shared
library package, the problematic relationship is between packages
providing static libraries and headers (even though the roo cause is
that the dynamic library package might be out of sync, AFAIUI the
ocaml case).

The current way to solve this kind of issue is by using a substvar
computed from the debian/rules file.

> I've put debian-dpkg in CC. Let's see if someone there has a suggestion.

I think this could be made easier to solve with something similar to
what's requested in #689062. If so, I'll work on a syntax proposal for
a new substvar.

Thanks,
Guillem

Bug#695358: Regression: PDF files created with Inkscape are crashing Xelatex

2012-12-07 Thread Michel Briand (Quand on veut on peut !)
Package: libcairo2
Severity: important

PDF files created by Inkscape are causing Xelatex to crash.
This happens when a figure includes gradients.
The compilation process exits with the message:
** ERROR ** pdf_link_obj(): passed invalid object

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libcairo/+bug/1051939

As discussed in this thread, the error seems to appear for PDF file
with broken references:
http://tug.org/pipermail/xetex/2010-December/019653.html

Such files seem to be fixed by running "pdftk".

Steps to reproduce:
Create a figure with a gradient in Inkscape and save it as PDF.
Include this PDF in a latex document and try to compile it with xelatex.

(most of this bug report is borrowed from launchpad bug)

Bug#695359: apt-get does not properly reuse connections with https

Package: apt
Version: 0.9.7.6
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

when using an https: connection, apt-get does not properly reuse
connections. Because https setup costs can be quite high, this can cause
much slowdown when, for example, many different distributions on the
same server need to be checked.

There is a partially working patch on Ubuntu launchpad:

Well Mutt reads from gpg and if that read stucks gpg can't do much. I
probably read your report not close enough. My question should have
been, whether you was able to replicate the problem with gpg called on
the commandline.

Some quick thoughts, I'm not too fond on hardcoding the package naming
pattern in such low level tools (but then we do this already for the
path names of those tools). This assumes all packages have been properly
marked already with M-A:. For dpkg-checkbuilddeps, yes, apt is
not (currently) an option, as that'd be a layer violation, and it would
exlude other frontends (I've some ideas on better integration with
frontends that could render this a non-issue, but not right now).
There's lots of toolchains, for different languages and runtimes,
hardcoding a list of those is really not appealing either, so
something generic would be my preference. An small issue with handling
the implicit mapping is that we might require more Build-Dependencies
than strictly needed, as some might only be used either for host or
build targets.

Thanks,
Guillem

Just use "su -c" for "nginx -t". Anyway, you have to modify
init-file of nginx.

> My suggestion to get rid of this error:
> [...patch...]

First, -S option != -s (do you mean this, right?). Or your patch just
break thing further.

Second, $PID from your's awk-horror and --pidfile /run/$NAME.pid (used
by start-stop-daemon) -- is a joke?

It's better to fix src/* stuff (upstream?) instead and not introduce
a new garbage to the init-file...

Bug#695361: less: buggy backslash handling in prompt string: \ needs to be doubled

2012-12-07 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: less
Version: 456-1
Severity: normal

The command

  echo | less '-mPmfoo\.bar'

gives the prompt "foobar" instead of "foo.bar". To get the period, the
backslash needs to be doubled, but this is not what the less man page
says:

Any characters other than the special ones (question mark, colon,
period, percent, and backslash) become literally part of the prompt.
Any of the special characters may be included in the prompt literally
by preceding it with a backslash.

As there is no reason to double the backslash, I suppose that it is a
bug in the program, not in the documentation.

Note that this bug affects "man". For instance, "man apt.conf" gives
the following prompt:

Manual page aptconf(5) line 1 (press h for help or q to quit)

where the period is missing.

Bug#695362: samba-common's dhcp hooks write to /etc/samba breaking ro root

2012-12-07 Thread Andrew Shadura
Package: samba-common
Version: 2:3.6.6-2
Severity: normal

samba-common provides a dhcp-client hook script,
/etc/dhcp3/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/samba, which apparently writes to /etc
thus breaking boot when the rootfs is read-only.

SAMBA_DHCP_CONF=/etc/samba/dhcp.conf

<...>

echo -n > ${SAMBA_DHCP_CONF}.new
<...>
mv ${SAMBA_DHCP_CONF}.new $SAMBA_DHCP_CONF

It'd be cool if that could be disabled via /etc/defaults, or, better, if
it could detect that location not being writable and not try to write
there if it is.

Bug#695363: pm-utils: /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/sata_alpm imposes max_power

2012-12-07 Thread Stefan Monnier
Package: pm-utils
Version: 1.4.1-9
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Whenever I plug my power adapter, /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/sata_alpm
sets the link_power_management_policy to max_performance. I think that
SATA_ALPM_ENABLE should be extended to 4 different values:
- don't touch.
- choose min_power or max_performance depending on ac power.
- always set max_performance.
- always set min_power.

Currently, I can get the second behavior by setting SATA_ALPM_ENABLE to
"true", I can sort-of get the third behavior by leaving SATA_ALPM_ENABLE
at some other value, and to get the first behavior I have to
"touch /etc/pm/power.d/sata_alpm". And there's no way to get the fourth
other than to do it outside of pm-utils (after doing the "touch").

When it receives a SIGINT, gpg should quit immediately (possibly
after some clean-up). The problem is that gpg was still running.

I don't know. The problem occurs too rarely to know whether I get
the same behavior on the command line.

The fact that gpg has a zombie child means at least a problem with gpg.

I think so, too, but FTBFS on ppc64 is no good.
So, I don't care that maintainers decide whether this patch

The sata_alpm hook is disabled by default, you need to explicitly enable
it e.g. via
echo SATA_ALPM_ENABLE=true > /etc/pm/config.d/sata_alpm

> - choose min_power or max_performance depending on ac power.

This is what is what you get if SATA_ALPM_ENABLE=true

> - always set max_performance.
> - always set min_power.

What would be the point of that? If you don't want pm-utils to change
the alpm state, set it outside of pm-utils and use SATA_ALPM_ENABLE=false.

The 'spec' is here: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianBootstrap although
it's now somewhat out of date with respect to results of discussion in
http://bugs.debian.org/661538 (DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=stage=N ->
DEB_BUILD_PROFILE=)

It is still under development as we gain experience with this
bootstrap and associated tools.

> The binary packages still need a
> different version so they can't be mistaken.

Not necessarily - staged builds are not intended to be uploaded to any
'real' repository, only a temporary one for the purposes of
bootstrapping and supplying build-deps. dpkg marks such packages as
'staged builds' so that they can easily be refused by the archive.
Exactly what is done with version numbers remains up for debate.

> > They *do* need to be buildable in a
> > standardised way (so no package-specific stuff like gencontrol.py).
>
> The source package still needs to comply with policy.

Not if it's never going to be uploaded? Staged builds are just
intermediate reeduced-dependency version of packages and I expect the
source of the stage1 build to look exactly the same as the source for
the normal build (for all packages). As Ben observes, it is important
that whatever mechanisms we use are generalisable so we don't have to
care which package it is. gencontrol.py could be run so long as that
is all internalised by the package.

I entirely leave it to you guys what the best/least intrusive way is
of getting the desired effect of having a stage1 build that just does
linux-libc-headers, and normal builds as currently. I don't believe
that any further stages are needed (at least for bootstrap/cross
purposes).

Bug#695268: liblockfile1: harmful remove action in M-A:same package

2012-12-07 Thread Dominik George
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA256

Hi,

I looked at the package and am baffled by the postinst and postrm scripts.
They are (should be?) entirely useless (manually calling ldconfig ??).

I then brought up debian/rules and immediately saw what the reason for
that method is: Complete ignorance of debhelper or anything else allowing
anyone but the maintainer to cope with the packaging work in a reasonable
way.

I am reporting this issue as a wishlist bug because I think maintainers
should try to not make life for other contributors harder than necessary.
And re-working the paackge with proper debhelper code would certainly also
fix this issue.
