Bug#693956: Acknowledgement (Wheezy d-i fails to set german keymap when set on command line)

2012-11-22 Thread Bernhard Schmidt

It looks like I need to set both debian-installer/keymap=de and keymap=de

keymap=de prevents getting the keyboard layout selection displayed, but
does not seem to do anything regarding the actual layout being set

debian-installer/keymap=de sets the keyboard layout to German but the
selection still gets displayed

Both settings together have the desired effect.

If a user modified it, it's not really orphaned though. Even under
normal circumstances doing that would make them wholly responsible
for maintaining the conffile from then on. The only real difference
here is that the package is now never going to make further changes
of its own, and the file belongs entirely to the user but they will
still want to keep (their changes to) it "forever".

I agree it should be deleted if unmodified.

This does seem not entirely unlike the situation from #565126, where
a file in /etc/udev/rules.d became orphaned by the package, but users
who had modified it were still correct to put their own rules in
that place, and would expect and want their rules to be preserved.

In the end we resolved that by deleting it if unmodified,
but otherwise just leaving it alone.

Feel free to crib this patch, which does just that, if you don't
see any major problem with taking that approach here too:

http://anonscm.debian.org/gitweb/?p=users/ron/xf86-input-wacom.git;a=commitdiff;h=25db4704334d835b88bc170d0045a62b04805e24

I guess another option might be to move it to user-blacklist.conf
or so if modified, but that has a (small?) risk of breaking for
people who might maintain it with something like puppet or so.

  Cheers,
  Ron

Bug#693958: postgresql-common: Upgrade fails when /var/lib/postgres is a NFS mount point

2012-11-22 Thread Hugh Davenport
Package: postgresql-common
Version: 134wheezy2
Severity: important

Hi,

I was upgrading my system, and postgresql-common failed to configure with the
following error:

Setting up postgresql-common (134wheezy2) ...
chown: changing ownership of `/var/lib/postgresql': Operation not permitted
dpkg: error processing postgresql-common (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

My /var/lib/postgresql is a NFS mount point, with the following options:

box:/srv/nfs/gum/postgresql/ on /var/lib/postgresql type nfs
(rw,relatime,vers=3,rsize=65536,wsize=65536,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,mountaddr=10.0.1.3,mountvers=3,mountport=32767,mountproto=udp,local_lock=none,addr=10.0.1.3)

If I unmount the /var/lib/postgresql before upgrading, then I get this error:
Setting up postgresql-common (134wheezy2) ...
/bin/df: `/var/lib/postgresql/9.1/main': No such file or directory
/bin/df: no file systems processed
[] Starting PostgreSQL 9.1 database server: main[] Error:

 failed!
invoke-rc.d: initscript postgresql, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing postgresql-common (--configure):
subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

For the first error, having a look at what it is doing, it seems it is does a
 chown postgres:postgres /var/lib/postgresql
on line 30 of debian/postgresql-common.postinst
I think this should first check what the permissions of that directory are and
only do a chown if they are not correct.

As for second error, I would expect that if no database is present, but I
included it in the report just in case.

Cheers,

Hugh

The ntp package provides more than just that one script. The rest
doesn't need perl, so I would argue it's ok for ntp to not depend on

The latest this should be complete (including the upload of the new
upstream release to close these two bugs in unstable) is expected to be
the end of next week. If it can be moved up, we will.

A few days after the bugs are closed in unstable, Nick will file the
unblock request to get the changes into Wheezy.

The new release will be done in a branch in SVN and then the changes
pushed back into trunk at a later date. The cmake branch will likely be
merged at that point as well, getting us finally to 0.95.0 or possibly
even 1.0.0. At some point (after Wheezy), there will be another new
upstream release and that will be uploaded to go into Jessie and
backported to Wheezy-backports.

Bug#693960: sysvinit: Undocumented, obscure limit for "process" field in inittab entries

2012-11-22 Thread Johannes Truschnigg
Package: sysvinit
Version: 2.88dsf-13.1+squeeze1
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

I added a new entry to inittab on a busy host which did not seem to start upon
invoking `telinit q`. Syslog received the following message:

Nov 22 10:16:29 r7 init: /etc/inittab[93]: process field too long

This limit (127 characters) is not documented in man 5 inittab, nor anywhere
else I looked. In init's source file, there are error messages the explicitely
state length limits for other fields in inittab (which a user is much less
likely to overflow, I think), which seems kind of weird.

The attached patch adds the length limit information to init's error message
and to the appropriate man page.

hmmm, I guess that there is some showstopper in getting out the latest
version soon. I was updating the debian/copyright file and noticed that
the tarball does contain two non-free components:

Files: src/plugins_3rdparty/psipred/src/seq2mtx.cpp
   src/plugins_3rdparty/psipred/src/sspred_avpred.cpp
   src/plugins_3rdparty/psipred/src/sspred_hmulti.cpp

undertake their research and who agree to be bound by the same confidence.
The User shall procure and enforce such agreement from his or her staff for
the benefit of the Copyright holder.
...
 3. All forms of the Software will be kept in a reasonably secure place to
prevent unauthorised access.
...
 6. The Software may not be sold as a standalone package, or incorporated into
a commercial software package without the written permission of the
Copyright
holder. The Software may be used freely for individual academic or
commercial
research. The Software may also be made freely available for training or
teaching purposes.
 .
 7. The results produced by the Software may not be incorporated into any
data banks or databases which are subject to the payment of access or
license fees without the written permission of the Copyright holder.
 .
 8. The Software may be made available to users over a local network or
wide area network (including the Internet), but only if access is granted
free of charge to all authorised users. Incorporation of the Software into
a commercial Web site or other fee paying service is not allowed without
the written permission of the Copyright holder. If PSIPRED results are
returned to the user via such a network service, then a suitable
acknowledgement of the PSIPRED method must be returned somewhere in the
output text.
...

That's all pretty non-free.

Moreover the source does contain a copy of phylip which we all know is
non-free (and you might even like to try signing a petition to convince the
authors freeing their code[1].)

So what can we do?

   1. Move whole Ugene package to non-free (simple but gutless)
   2. Splitting those non-free parts from tarball and use Debian packaged
code (from non-free - we do have at least phylip there and could try
to package psipred as well if urgently needed).
Then it depends from the fact whether
   a) component is urgently needed by ugene and we need to add a
Depends/Recommends -> ugene needs to go to contrib
   b) ugene runs fine without thes components and these are just an
enhancement -> ugene remains in main and just Suggests those
  non-free components

I'd consider 2b) the ideal situation but I can neither decide about the
relation between ugene and those modules nor do I know whether the split
is technically easily feasible.

Regarding third party components: We just replaced zlib but there are a
real lot of plugins readily packaged for Debian. I'd really love if we
could modularise ugene a bit more and use the Debian packaged components
if this is somehow possible. I'd volunteer to create a list based on our
pool of biological applications[2] and libraries[3].

Kind regards

  Andreas.

Bug#691148: Debian's options

2012-11-22 Thread Alexey Eromenko
Hmm. I did not know of those BIOS news.

What are Debian's options ?

* Move VirtualBox 4.2 from "main" to "contrib" repo
Positives: least work required. Keeps 100% compatibility with Upstream.
Negatives: Demotivates Free Software developers.

* Use VirtualBox 4.2: Remove OpenWatcom code, and build BIOS from
assembler files
Positives: relatively little work required.
Negatives: Inability to backport upstream BIOS fixes into Debian's code.

* Move to VirtualBox 4.2 codebase, but keep VBox 4.1 BIOS.
Positives: Allows moving to VirtualBox 4.2 (the really big changes in
VBox are in user-space and in guest additions, not in BIOS and not in
kernel)
Negatives: I did not find out how-to do this.

* Stay with VirtualBox 4.1 forever (mini-fork)
Positives: Keeps stable base
Negatives: Lots of work; Will require constant patching to support new
Linux kernels. (and X11 drivers, for guest additions)

* Full fork of VirtualBox 4.1 ("HyperBox" ?)
Positives: Will offer major new features, that do not exist in
Oracle's VirtualBox [1]; More community control.
Negatives: Same as with mini-fork; Lots of work; Will require constant
patching to support new upstream Linux kernels. (and X11 drivers, for
guest additions). Taming the 300 MB monster (VBox source code,
unzipped) is a difficult task.
Eventually will lose compatibility with upstream.
Will be difficult to merge with upstream Oracle in the future.

[1] Major new features in question: (patches that Oracle rejected)
A. Unattended Guest OS Install - vbox-unattended (like VMware Easy Install)
https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=46798

B. Hide VM from desktop taskbar (like Hyper-V)
https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=46616

Any other options, that I forgot ?

Hrm, can you provide an example for that? From looking at the code, this
should not happen because 'continue' is only used in the inner iterator
loop. The main while loop does not use 'continue' at all but only uses
'break' to shutdown the ping-thread completely.

Cheers,
Sebastian

Bug#674142: make it possible to disable ssl compression in apache2

2012-11-22 Thread James Greig
Hi Arno,

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate that it's a client side issue and apache
is just compensating for this so the efforts are fully appreciated especially
with free software. It's just unfortunate that the PCI compliance companies
are treating it as a requirement that the servers should compensate for it.

Out of interest, you said it is already backported? I'm using
squeeze-backports but it hasn't appeared as an update? Am I doing something
wrong here?

Bug#693961: realpath: binary package realpath lacks "Multi-Arch: foreign" declaration

2012-11-22 Thread Helmut Grohne
Package: realpath

The realpath package provides an architecture independent command line
interface to its reverse dependencies. As such it should be marked as
"Multi-Arch: foreign". Similar utilities such as tar have already gained
such a declaration. Adding it will make cross grading a system easier
and aid with cross compilation setups.

Dimitrios has contacted the upstream author, and he agrees to remove the
front- and back-cover texts.

Ansgar: is it ok for ftpmasters if we fix this issue by just changing
the debian/copyright file (possibly pointing to some public location
like a SVN commit as a proof of the relicensing)? or do you require
upload with a new orig tarball?

  Programming Lang: C++, Python
Description : Context-aware mesh smoothing for biomedical applications

Smoothing algorithms allow to reduce artifacts from mesh generation, but
often degrade accuracy. The method described in the paper "Context-aware
mesh smoothing for biomedical applications" identifies staircase
artifacts which result from image inhomogeneities and binary
segmentation in medical image data for subsequent removal by adaptive
mesh smoothing. Thus, context-aware smoothing enables to adaptively
smooth artifact areas, while non-artifact features can be preserved.
This is a implementation of this method in Cpp with Python bindings.

LaserBoy can translate laser vector art into standard, 48KHz, 16 bit,
multi channel RIFF WAVE file format and play those files with
independent sample shifts between the channels for proper time alignment
between the scanners and the color modulation devices (per color).
Waves made with LaserBoy can be played from any surround sound card in

LaserBoy can open its own generated wave files and convert them back
into vector art.
LaserBoy provides a full set of points optimization routines including
distance spanning, corner dwelling and the ability to minimize total
points
distance by rearranging the order and direction of lit segments within
a frame.
With a DC modified 8 channel sound card and some outboard electronics,
LaserBoy is currently outputting full motion, 16bit X, Y position, 24

of
any integer sample rate is possible. 48KHz is only a limitation of the

 1) I opened "gnome-terminal" within the user X-session,

 3) (gdb) set pagination 0
 4) (gdb) run
 5) This is the displayed text:

Now my question is, do I have to wait until the display freezes again?
The following question is obvious, how will I take the logged

 Thank you,

See also http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=542747 where I
sent a patch to Lintian to check for this mismatch.

Earlier on that bug, Russ said "there are valid use cases for a
mismatch [when the Changes distribution isn't UNRELEASED]" but didn't
elaborate on what those valid use cases were. (foo vs. foo-proposed-updates,
possibly?)

I meant, I backported the patch in our source code repository:

Dear Maintainer,

Specifying 'script --quiet ...' still produces the 'Script started'

Bug#683837: please support block devices as rootfs in lxc-debconfig

2012-11-22 Thread Marc Fournier
Package: lxc
Version: 0.8.0-1
Followup-For: Bug #683837

[re-posting here, sent yesterday to #687767 by mistake]

Hello,

I noticed this bug still occurs with 0.8.0-1.

I would like to submit the attached patch, which solves the problem in
my case (using LVM rootfs).

It's very similar to the 2 other patches, but uses tar instead of cp,
which should work for dotfiles.

Using rsync would be nicer, but this would add a dependency on the
package.

I hope one or another of these patches will find their way in the
package sooner or later :-)

BTW, thanks for making lxc-debconf, it's excellent !

Cheers,

Bug#693968: libpaper: fails to cross-build due to using cross-built paperconf during build

2012-11-22 Thread Colin Watson
Package: libpaper
Version: 1.1.24+nmu2
Severity: normal
Tags: patch
User: crossbu...@debian.org
Usertags: cross

libpaper fails to cross-build because it tries to use the cross-built
paperconf to build debian/libpaper1.config. This only works if the
build environment is set up such that it can execute the cross-built
binaries, either directly or via an emulator; however, this is unlikely
to be the case at least for early stages of the upcoming arm64
bootstrap, and it's not something we want to rely on in general.

The usual remedy for this problem is to perform two build passes when
cross-building. The following patch implements this.

  * When cross-building, run a separate native build pass so that we have a
native version of paperconf to build debian/libpaper1.config. This
requires running the primary build pass out-of-tree as well.

Yes, there's something weird in this change. But please also check if
you still have those lines in your config space in hooks/savelog.LAST.source:

   else
echo "Congratulations! No errors found in log files."
  export flag_reboot=1

Setting the reboot flag to 1 was removed in the commit you've
mentioned. But I still think I need to change something there.

No, I don't have these lines.

Fyi, the workaround I came up with was to add this to
scripts/LAST/60-savelog:

echo "[working around reboot bug, nothing to see here]" >> $LOGDIR/error.log

Dear Maintainer,

The packaged version in debian (testing or unstable) is not able to connect to
a serial console on a XEN host via SSH and reports the problem 'Cannot open a
device with no alias name'.

There has been a patch around for this problem which could be easily
incorporated into the Debian package. The Bug-report and also the patch
(commenting out 2 lines) is available
http://bugzillafiles.novell.org/attachment.cgi?id=506198

It would be great if you could fix this problem for wheezy.

Bug#693970: tpu: libitext-java/2.1.7-3+deb7u1

2012-11-22 Thread Niels Thykier
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: tpu

Hi,

A user reported an issue with libitext-java in testing (#687692). In
short, the problem was an ABI issue in bouncycastle.

The diff between bouncycastle/1.44 and bouncycastle/1.46 is far to
large to sanely review and libitext-java is the only package which has
any (reported) issues caused by the ABI change.
Therefore, simply rebuilding libitext-java in testing (with an upper
bound on its dependency) should suffice for this particular problem.

Unfortunately, it turns out that libitext-java declares no
dependnecies relations (except libitext-java-gcj) in testing at all,
which is obvously wrong.
In sid, I have taken the liberty of properly fixing this by using
javahelper to compute the proper dependency relations automatically
(as that version cannot migrate to testing anyway being built against
the bouncycastle in sid).

The question is then, should I backport the changes for
auto-generating the dependencies and insert the upper bound on the
bouncycastle dependency -OR- should I simply manually hardcode all the
missing dependencies in the tpu upload?

I have attached the debdiff between libitext-java in sid and testing
to give you an idea of the changes involved. In case you are
wondering about the explicit version'ed dependencies in the diff, it
is because the tools involved are not able to properly give version
bounds on the dependencies[0].

~Niels

[0] Sadly, Java packages do not have a shlibs/symbols system (nor the
"rename package on ABI breakage"-proceedure).
Base version: libitext-java_2.1.7-3 from testing
Target version: libitext-java_2.1.7-4 from unstable

No hints in place.

Not the case here Michael :-)

My worry is that this seems more like a hack than a proper fix.

That is not a serious bug. hurd-i386 is not a release architecture.

Well it is moot then because dovecot no longer uses ntp-wait. But I still
don't understand why if even a small portion of the ntp packages
functionality will fail to work without an additional package, it should
not depend on or atleast recommend that package.

Hi Michael!

Unless I have completely misinterpreted the cinnamon source code, it
does provide its own integrated policykit agent which is actually the
forked version of gnome-shell (src/cinnamon-polkit-authentication-agent.c).

The dependence of cinnamon against libpolkit-agent-1-0 and
libpolkit-gobject-1-0 suggests this as well.

That's said, you are more expert than me about it. Please provide me a
little bit more detail if I am wrong.

this is a bit closer to the upstream gnulib fix.

Bug#674907:

2012-11-22 Thread Sylvain Munaut
I have the same issue running wheezy with a recent custom compiled kernel.
I also used to have the issue under squeeze ...

root@sake:~ # xm dmesg | grep "Xen version"
(XEN) Xen version 4.1.3 (Debian 4.1.3-2) (wa...@debian.org) (gcc
version 4.7.1 (Debian 4.7.1-7) ) Fri Sep 7 17:48:19 UTC 2012

root@sake:~ # uname -a
Linux sake 3.6.4-1-g8fb2aff #10 SMP PREEMPT Mon Oct 29 15:27:50
CET 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Until "recently" I just worked around the issue by forcing ntp resync
even for large offset but recently I got an application that can't
tolerate even the small period of time between the unsync and the ntp
resync ...

It doesn't happen at regular intervals, more like randomly and yes, it
cause the offset on dom0 and all domUs running there.

Cheers,

Sylvain

Bug#693978: seemingly erroneous --color and --notify options in git-buildpackage manpage

2012-11-22 Thread Filippo Rusconi
Package: git-buildpackage
Version: 0.6.0~git20120601
Severity: minor
Tags: patch

Greetings,

git-buildpackage (testing) fails when called with '--notify=on' or
'--color=on', while it does not fail when called with
'--git-notify=on' or '--git-color=on'. '--color' and '--notify' are
erroneously documented in the man page.

The git-buildpackage man page for sid has the same error (did not test
the program itself, though).

See patch below, prepared on the basis of the current sid
git-buildpackage version of the man page.

Cheers,
Filippo

Makes no difference, there's a circular dep between the two. Also the
perl-modules description says:

Note that this package only exists to save archive space and should be
considered an internal implementation detail of the `perl' package.
Other packages should not depend on `perl-modules' directly, they
should use `perl' (which depends on `perl-modules') instead.

I am not sure that would really help in general. In this case it would
not have because the bug lay with d-i and not any of the GRUB scripts.

It does. You decline the offer to install GRUB to /dev/sda by answering
'No' and specifying where GRUB should go.

When reporting issues, please use the package name, otherwise your bugs
will end up being filed against the unknown package, and will not reach
the maintainer unless reassigned (which I did now).

Using reportbug can assist you in figuring out which package a given

Bug#683908: gpsprune: doesn't properly use $http_proxy

2012-11-22 Thread debian
I think there are two possibilities here - either the starter script
gpsprune doesn't parse the proxy information properly and passes the
wrong information to GpsPrune, or the networking stuff used by GpsPrune
doesn't take any notice of what's passed in. It would be very useful to
know whether starting GpsPrune from the command line with
 java -Dhttp.proxyHost=10.0.0.1 -Dhttp.proxyPort=3128 -jar
/usr/share/gpsprune/gpsprune.jar

makes things behave as you want.

Looking at Debian's gpsprune script (in 10.1), I can't see any reason
why it wouldn't pass the port properly through - if I give it
http://10.0.0.1:3128 then it appears to correctly split up the host and
port, and pass both successfully onto GpsPrune. So knowing whether the
direct specification works or not would help rule out the gpsprune
script as the problem.

Another problem I see in this script (although I'm not too familiar
with bash), is what happens when you give a host but no port? In the
case of "http://10.0.0.1";, it correctly identifies the host as
"10.0.0.1", but the second sed command fails to find a match, and
returns the whole $http_proxy variable. So I end up with host=10.0.0.1
and port=http://10.0.0.1 - surely that can't be right. Perhaps it is
rejected later and reset to 80 by the networking classes? But I assume
that rather than checking [ -z $proxyport ], it should be running a grep
and looking at the return code to see whether a match was found or not.

Any Debian bash experts feel like commenting on this one?

None that I am aware of. Maybe we should ask for a removal in testing.

Hi,

quota: error while getting quota from netapp-nfs:/vol/ceon_home/ for rrp (id
5693): Connection refused

Problem is in clnt_create() function from libc6, which don't support IPv6.

Tools from nfs-utils using libtirpc (with own implementation of clnt_create),
so I compiled quota for test with libtirpc and this work with IPv6 NFS.

It may be worth use libtirpc for quota?

Hi,

during a test with piuparts I noticed your package fails to upgrade from

It installed fine in 'lenny', and upgraded to 'squeeze' successfully,
but then the upgrade to 'wheezy' failed because it tries to overwrite
other packages files without declaring a Breaks+Replaces relation.

See policy 7.6 at

Bug#693345: apticron: /etc/cron.daily/apticron dies with timeout message

2012-11-22 Thread Florian Zörkler
Hi,

I can confirm that behaviour on two of my five machines but with errorcode 110.

Unfortunately, it's not possible to reproduce it - sometimes it works,
sometimes not.

Trying to execute apticron manually will work all the time.

Bug#693987: unblock: ruby1.9.1/1.9.3.194-4

2012-11-22 Thread Antonio Terceiro
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: unblock

Please unblock package ruby1.9.1

This version fixes a security problem with the hashing algorithm that
can be exploited to craft DOS attacks.

The debdiff against the package in testing is attached. Follows a brief
description of the added patch:

  * the added files represent the newly added, more secure, hash
implementation.
  * the rb_memhash function is being moved to a different source file,
and changed to use that new hash implementation.

the author of this revision merely said "fix warnings in perl 5.14"

i don't have any working latex that would work with latex2html, so i
can't claim to know whether this is a reasonable.

roughly speaking, with abandonware like l2h, we merely go by the
licence. gpl implies (to us) that anyone can hack out a bug and
re-release.

That's the responsibility of the application creating the logs, not
logrotate.

On the other hand, there are others who wouldn't want the old logs to
be lost in this situation. There's no single "good" way of dealing
with this.

Bug#693989: /usr/bin/xcalc: buttons rendered incorrectly because non-existent font is selected

2012-11-22 Thread Michal Suchanek
Package: x11-apps
Version: 7.7~2
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/xcalc

Hello,

xcalc usees a specific font for the sqrt and pi buttons. This font does
not exist on my system. either xcalc should depend on whatever provides
it or use the existing font.

See the modified config file.

Changes -adobe-symbol-*-*-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-*-* to
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-adobe-symbol

Thanks

Michal

Yes, of course!

It would be fine if someone steps up and helps Ross (who is still
responsive and is considering including the "2012" changes into "his"
lastex2html) to work on this.

Unfortunately, there was no notice by anyone when and why a release was
done. Just need to maintain what we accept into Debian for the next few
years, and trying to prevent a mess caused by random diverging releases
by different people.

Thanks,

Roland
