I'd rather wait for your response before trying this, because one run

2011-02-17 Thread xay
Subject: SpaceZero: (NEW) a RTS, 2D space combat, multiplayer net game.
Package: spacezero
Version: 0.78.0
Severity: wishlist

SpaceZero is a RTS, 2D space combat, multiplayer (two players by now)
net game.

The objective is to conquer the space, defeating all enemies.

At starting point you have only one ship and one planet, but you have
gold to buy more ships to conquer more planets.

All the ships can be controlled by the computer (automatic mode) or by
the player (manual mode). You can easily change among your ships
controlling all of them independly.

Not sure how useful this is when applied to totem only. Totem uses other

I am terribly sorry about asking for removal without checking. I assumed
this package was in pkg-gnome, and I see now that it doesn’t.

I think there is an alert sent to the maintainer (or is it through the
PTS?), saying that the removal was requested. But that doesn’t help when
FTP masters are ultra-fast ;)

Those who have metapackages installed (like gnome-desktop-environment)
will be forced automatically into gdm3. I’m not sure that’s best since
the configuration is not preserved, though.

Bug#613790: pm-utils: eeepc 1005 PE recently stopped resuming from hibernate

2011-02-17 Thread Emmanuel Charpentier
Package: pm-utils
Version: 1.3.0-3
Severity: important

I installed testing about one year ago on this machine. The default
installation and eeepc-acpi-utils allowed me to use both suspension and
hibernation with no problems.

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed that resuming from hibernation stopped from
working : the machine starts with Asus splash screen, then grub splash screen,
detects a resume image, blanks screen for a while (as usual). However, after
5-10 seconds (time expexcted to get the screen-save prompt for a password when
resuming from hibernation), the system reboots back to the Asus splash screen,
the the grub splash screen ; this second time, the resume image is not detected
and the system performs a "normal" boot (perfectly.

I tried to (manually) pass some --quirks options to pm-hibernate, to no avail
(ISTR I tried vberestore, pcirestore, but I'm no longer sure).

Therefore, I can no longer use hibernation, which is somewhat annoyng and
renders me more dependent on power supplies.

The same bug has been reported (in analogous circumstances) on the eeepc devel
mailong list a few days ago (I don't have the reference currently).

Any workaround would be welcome.

Sincerely,

Emmanuel

It's a missing Replaces entry in the control file. A simple dpkg
--force-overwrite -i
/var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-pilot-conduits-data_2.32.1-1_all.deb will fix

Are you using KMS (cat /proc/fb)?
Does
echo "disk" > /sys/power/state
work (as root)?

Does the partition in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume match your swap
partition?

Why do believe this is a bug in pm-utils?

This package has already had to be removed once:
RoQA; unredistributable; non-free;

How do you propose to fix #610300? (This bug will likely be re-applied
to your proposed upload).

Bug#613792: logrotate: Should allow to disable config snippets in .d

2011-02-17 Thread Jerome Warnier
Package: logrotate
Version: 3.7.8-6
Severity: wishlist

On Debian, some packages providing configuration include directory allow for
easily disabling.
E.g.: /etc/cron.d/ -> if a file has a . (dot) anywhere in the name, it is not
taken into account, so adding a .old or ."date" something gets it disabled
Other e.g.: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ -> any file not ending in .list is
ignored, so adding a .disabled gets it disabled.

Currently, any file in /etc/logrotate.d/ is interpreted.
It would be great if logrotate had a similar mechanism as described.

Thanks

I have now:
The maintainer prepares a source package (.dsc) and puts it online
somewhere (like on mentors.debian.net). Or even better, she provides
a link to a public VCS repository where
the package is maintained.

The sponsor downloads (or checkouts) the source package.

I don't really think it's relevant. I have still reworded the para, it's
now:

Don't ever sponsor a new package without reviewing it. The review
of new packages done by ftpmasters mainly ensures that the software
is really free. Of course, it happens that they stumble on packaging
problems but they really should not. It's your task to ensure that
the uploaded package complies with the Debian Free Software Guidelines and
is of good quality.

> copyright, author or license.

I only added: grep -ri is your friend for this task.

 Sponsoring packages

Sponsoring a package means uploading a package for a maintainer who is not able
-to do it on their own, a new maintainer applicant. Sponsoring a package also
-means accepting responsibility for it.
+to do it on their own. It's not a trivial matter, the sponsor must verify
+the packaging and ensure that it is of the high level of quality that
+Debian strives to have.

-

-New maintainers usually have certain difficulties creating Debian packages —
-this is quite understandable. That is why the sponsor is there, to check the
-package and verify that it is good enough for inclusion in Debian. (Note that
-if the sponsored package is new, the ftpmasters will also have to inspect it
-before letting it in.)
+The process of sponsoring a package is:
+
+
+The maintainer prepares a source package (.dsc) and puts it online
+somewhere (like on mentors.debian.net). Or even better, she provides
+a link to a public VCS repository where
+the package is maintained.
+
+
+The sponsor downloads (or checkouts) the source package.
+
+
+The sponsor reviews the source package. If she finds issues, she
+informs the maintainer and asks her to provide a fixed version (the
+process starts over at step 1).
+
+
+The sponsor could not find any remaining problem. She builds the
+package, signs it, and uploads it to Debian.
+
+

-Sponsoring merely by signing the upload or just recompiling is definitely not recommended. You need to build the
-source package just like you would build a package of your own. Remember that
-it doesn't matter that you left the prospective developer's name both in the
-changelog and the control file, the upload can still be traced to you.
+But before delving in the details of how to sponsor a package, you should
+ask yourself whether adding the proposed package is beneficial to Debian.

-If you are an application manager for a prospective developer, you can also be
-their sponsor. That way you can also verify how the applicant is handling the
-'Tasks and Skills' part of their application.
+There's no simple rule to answer this question, it can depend on many
+factors: is the upstream codebase mature and not full of security holes?

http://pkg-xorg.alioth.debian.org/howto/configure-input.html should
get you started. You could try getting rid of the InputDevice bits in
your xorg.conf, but it looks like it's configured properly anyway:

Not sure how evdev detection work. Did you build your kernel with
evdev (at least as a module)? Please report:

Ugh, I did not notice that it was on mips.

Nigel, you must provide a list of what was upgraded when the problem
started appearing.

It might be a problem between libc and the kernel. I remember having seen
something like that in the past. CCing Aurélion Jarno who might remember
better than me.

Bug#583774: Same problem here

2011-02-17 Thread Roberto Fasciolo
I've exactly the same issue (with the same errors in .xsession-errors)
on a machine I've updated from lenny to squeeze. I'm not using an intel
video adapter there but an nvidia.

I've noticed that besides gnome-panel not showing up at the same time
two processes were consuming about 30% CPU each: udisks-daemon and
dbus-daemon.

I found a temporary workaround that allows gnome to start up normally
(but prevents gnome to detect when a disk in inserted in the system and
also causes file explorer to crash when trying browsing a removable
device): removing the org.freedesktop.UDisks.conf file from
/etc/dbus-1/system.d.

No, doesn't make a difference. BTW it would help a lot if you could add a link
to the patch or at least to the archive to your email so the user doesn't have
to search for it before trying the patch.

Bug#613775: aptitude upgrades lose extended state (automatic status)

In that case it would be an aptitude bug as it would call MarkInstall
with FromUser == true for requests which are not directly from the user
and should therefore not be marked as manual.

As the changelog entry tries to describe in a request like
apt-get install A
A is now always marked as manual installed.

Previously, it was checked if A is already marked (= not garbage) and only
if not it was marked as manual. Thats faulty every time this request results
in the removal of B which was the package responsible for marking A.
The package A would be garbage then - this results normally in the funny
output that A is considered garbage and can be autoremoved and at the same
time its explicitly upgraded by the user, but if you activate automatic
autoremove the package A is removed in the request to install/upgrade it!
(Isn't the last one aptitudes default behavior?)

The rationality is simple that if the user cared enough to request install
of a new version of this package (s)he would be depressed so see it marked
for removal in the next autoremove run. Especially as the same command
if no newer version is installable marks the package as manual installed, too.

So could you please describe more detailed why do you consider it a bug
in APT rather than in aptitude? Exact commands you use for example?

Best regards

David Kalnischkies

Bug#592092: courier-pop-ssl: Missing symbolink link when using dpkg-reconfigure

On 08/07/2010 04:20 PM, Thibault Richard wrote:

Hello,

I've noticed a strange thing about this package.

When you install this package, it generates certificate in
/usr/lib/courier/pop3d.pem AND it creates a symbolic link in
/etc/courier/pop3d.pem

The symbolic link in /etc/courier/pop3d.pem is mandatory for the package to
work.

Nevertheless, this symbolic link is not created again when you launch the
command dpkg-reconfigure courier-pop-ssl

I think it is the other way around, /usr/lib/courier/pop3d.pem is a symbolic
link to /etc/courier/popd3d.pem.

Racke

This is a kernel issue, you should upgrade your kernel with a fixed
version.

This is fixed upstream by this commit:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commit;h=bda8229bdd087167f463ad5e74299987924f8137

The Lenny (at least in recent point releases) and Squeeze linux-2.6
packages both have the fix.

The sensors programs get its value from the kernel (actually from files
in /sys). It's possible your CPU is not supported by the kernel you are
running.

I have seen your are running your own kernel. Can you please retry with
a Debian kernel instead?

Also can you please send me the kernel messages upon insertion of the
coretemp module? They looks like this one, but you may have some more on
your system:

The tarball is still missing for some critical things. For example
there is no source code for _librsync.so, and librsync is LGPL
licensed. So we are still not able to distribute the package in
Debian's infrastructure legally.

Bug#613662: unmet dependencies race condition

This is not feasible, because of the nature of unstable. Packages get uploaded
and get auto-built by build daemons after the upload. As building packages can
take much time, it is frequent to have architectures that have many more
packages built than others.

On those 'slow' architectures, unsatisfied dependencies are frequent, but
almost
always get solved by _waiting_ (I run 'aptitude update; aptitude safe-upgrade'
daily and I don't even see these issues). Hence you cannot expect developers to
wait for _all_ architectures to be up2date to upload packages that depend on a
given package, that would just slow up things for no benefit.

If you want a system that has no such things, you should try testing (currently
Wheezy) or even stable (currently Squeeze), whose migration scripts are
_designed_ to avoid this. Unsatisfied dependencies in the testing or sable
suites are bugs; in unstable they are not (and cannot be, for the reasons
explained above).

OdyX

Hi,

Could we _at least_ have a workaround for that? As it seems the change
is not going to happen soon. Chromium fucked-up my default browser
choice, and now I've no easy way to change that, and I don't even know
where to look to fix that by hand. What's the workaround ?

Joey has commited, yestarday, a fix for this in main-menu. We could

Patch in our Git repo [1] adds microsecond resolution for Message-ID

I was only alerted when the bug was closed by FTP masters, hence, it might
indeed be an option in the PTS.

I will check this ASAP as this might lead to abuses.

This may make sense for apt-get, but I would like to be able to upgrade
some selected packages _without_ changing their manual/automatic state.
Especially in interactive situations (like aptitude's TUI/GUI or in
synaptic) this seems better. Especially since there are dedicated
commands for changing the manual/auto status.

I did not run anything else than "aptitude safe-upgrade", IIRC.

Bug#592092: courier-pop-ssl: Missing symbolink link when using dpkg-reconfigure

2011-02-17 Thread Stefan Hornburg (Racke)

On 08/07/2010 04:20 PM, Thibault Richard wrote:

Package: courier-pop-ssl
Severity: minor

Removing /etc/courier/pop3d.pem and running dpkg-reconfigure courier-pop-ssl
recreates the certificate.

Please supply more information on your problem.

Bug#613794: aptitude: cursor position in textfields. Usability improvement.

2011-02-17 Thread Antonio Ospite
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.6.3-3.2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

maybe we can improve the cursor position in textfields (search box, limit
display box): currently it is always at the _beginning_ of textfields, even
when there is text in them already.

Here is how aptitude behaves now:
 1. Open the Search box (For example with the '/' key)
 2. Insert some text and press OK
 3. Open the Search box again, the cursor is shown at the _beginning_ of the
previously inserted text.
 4. To replace the text the user can:
a. Insert a new text directly, _replacing_ the current one altogether
b. Use the right arrow key to put the cursor at the end of the text and
use Backspace to delete it (Del/Canc does not seem to work).

I observed myself doing 4b. most of the time (I should really say "always"),
and moving the cursor is kind of annoying.

However, if it was decided that the cursor has to be shown at the _end_ of the
text box then 4a. would not be look right either, the user would expect to
_append_ new characters to the text when inserting something new.

Bottomline, I propose to put the cursor at the _end_ of the text in textfields
and only allow to delete the text with backspace, in order to follow what IMHO
are the "expectations" of most of the users.

If the current behavior depends on ncurses and not directly on aptitude, then
sorry for the noise.

With Kind Regards,
   Antonio Ospite

I'm sorry for delayed response.
It is OK to do co-maintainance gs-cjk-resource and cmap-adobe-*
packages at the Debian Printing Team, and count me in the team.

Unfortunately because at this time (will be till summer) I'm in

That would be okay on LGPL/MIT-style licensed libraries, but you still
need to audit all files provided in the tarball if there are problems
and make sure the package works as usual after applying the trick.
Then you'd better make a source tarball that removed those
non-distributable files

So lets say a new debianutils is uploaded with a bug and turns out
uninstallable. The amd64 and i386 archs usualy get updates first while
the poor armel buildds lags somewhat behind. Situation then is that bash
is uninstallable on amd64/i386 but fine on armel.

Now someone does apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade. He has an ancient
bash installed and something depends on a newer bash version (so
something explicitly pulls in the newer version). Since bash is
Multi-Arch: foreign his ancient amd64 bash gets replaced by the newer
armel bash. Now that will be fun.

I would feel a whole lot better if apt would only have Multi-Arch: same
packages for armel. And dpkg should complain about wrong architecture
trying to install armel packages without Multi-Arch: same.

That is not something preferences can filter. But it is easy to filter
if there are two ways to declare foreign architectures in the config.

MfG
Goswin

Checking partman-btrfs it seems doing that. Have you tested it with
squeeze installer?

Bug#613645: xterm: Alt-Enter (M-RET) doesn't work

yes... you've run into a bug that I fixed a few days ago (since you
commented that it's doing nothing). Misled by the manpage, I used
32-bit data for reading the list of supported features.

When I added the feature, it wasn't (as) clear to me that people actually
used alt-enter. So now I know, and am making the feature configurable
(which in turn leads to new functionality, etc).

Do you mean _NET_WM_STATE_FULLSCREEN in _NET_SUPPORTED array? Awesome3
does advertise this feature. But neither Alt-Enter nor Full Screen
option set the atom.

hmm - xterm is only asking if the atom is set. The bug-fix I mentioned is
that it may not find the atom on 64-bit machines. (I have my ongoing
fixes in ftp://invisible-island.net/temp - this one simply changed CARD32
to long).

I installed awesome on my Debian/testing, and it does seem to honor the
fullscreen feature. (The screensize is not right, since the bottom row of
text is incomplete due to the increment size, etc - something I'll have to
continue working on).

At the moment, I'm just considering configurability to allow the
fullscreen feature to be entirely disabled (along with the key
translation), though just disabling the key itself may be preferable.

under tiling window manager? ;-)

I did suppose it would work better in ion2/ion3 than the ordinary layout,
which uses character-sized increments for the window manager hints.

But I've been busy setting up new machines for testing ports, and didn't
follow up on checking that. Given your question, I've added ion2/ion3
to my "Lenny" machine. Any other suggestions for testing?

Too many window manager out there. I would suggest “awesome” which I use. ;-)

yes - too many. I'd been using fvwm for quite a while, but in my newer
environment I'm mainly using Mac OS X with Parallels or some type of
VNC display.

Bug#613662: unmet dependencies race condition

I don't know if that architecture is slow.

Looking again at

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  linux-image-2.6-686: Depends: linux-image-2.6.37-1-686 which is a virtual
package.
linux-image-686: Depends: linux-image-2.6.37-1-686 which is a virtual package.
linux-doc-2.6: Depends: linux-doc-2.6.37 which is a virtual package.

Why can't they simply ensure the lower layers in this particular
dependency pyramid are sent out before or at the same time as the other
parts?

E.g., if I have two web pages, one referring to the other, I know to
make sure the one does not appear before the other.

Anyway, there upon full upgrade we get asked:

The following actions will resolve these dependencies:

 Remove the following packages:
1) linux-doc-2.6
2) linux-image-2.6-686
3) linux-image-686

One slip of the finger and we have removed our operating system, "never
to boot again", "it was time for grandpa to retire anyway".

Yes of course it will probably ask us "are we sure?".

Bug#613768: exim4 should include $HOST to local domains by default

2011-02-17 Thread Jonathan Plews

Quoting Vincent Lefevre :

Package: exim4
Version: 4.72-6
Severity: normal

By default, exim4 adds localhost and the FQDN (or the mailname?)
to local domains, but not $HOST (the nodename).

This is a problem because other packages may expect $HOST to be
in the local domains. This is the case of monit, which sends mail
with, by default:

  From: monit@$HOST

Thus such an address doesn't get rewritten when the mail is
transmitted to a different machine. A consequence is that the mail
can be blocked because of incorrect domain part. A workaround can
be to add $HOST manually via 'dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config', but
the default config should work.

Hi,

I think that, unless it explicitly set, the hostname is derived form
DNS lookups.

you can test this with changes to /etc/hosts, hostname -f and the
string exim gives on connect will be the same.

x.x.x.xhost host.domain.tld - will report just 'host'

x.x.x.xhost.domain.tld host - will report 'host.domain.tld'

so you could either fix this, or maybe set MAIN_HARDCODE_PRIMARY_HOSTNAME?

Regards

Because it's not important in unstable (as it gets solved over time)!

You are using unstable, that is a suite _designed_ to suffer those issues
_all_the_time_ (and will continue to do so).

If you want a system that doesn't have this type of problems; use testing!

> Anyway, there upon full upgrade we get asked:

… This happens because you try a "full upgrade", which is the _WRONG_ thing to
do when using unstable. I mentioned you already that using "safe-upgrade" or
"upgrade" doesn't trigger that type of problems. So you should really try using
the correct tools for the suite you are using; expectations you can have on
stable are not the same than the ones you can have on unstable; both imply
different use cases, different tools and different temporary issues.

Now there is plenty of documentation out there that will explain this better
than me; please let this non-bugreport die.

Which is fine, the software just shouldn't request to alter the autobit if
it doesn't want it to be changed - the FromUser bit is exactly responsible
for that and nothing else, so why setting it if you don't want it?

Just to be clear, it was possible that the autobit was changed already by
the "old" behavior which doesn't make sense in your usecase as well.
I discussed that with Michael quiet a bit and we don't see a reason for
this "random" condition: Flipping the autobit only if the package is not
marked changes depending on what requests are served before or after
in the same run - so the behavior depends on the order in which the
requests are executed which is always bad.

apt-get (dist-)upgrade does all MarkInstall requests in this situation
with FromUser == false as no installation was requested explicitly.
The question is now why aptitude sets the FromUser bit here to true…

We plan to have a new upstream release (and upload to Debian) within the
next days. I'm sure we can fix this with this release.

I fully agree with you. I am myself on a general crusade for
lowering as much possible depends to recommends, so no further
arguments needed

:-)

Hm, I'm not sure why libgs9 needs to depend on gs-cjk-resource.

I later recalled why I set it as depends rather than recommends: Someone
(Till?) described recently how treating some of the shared files in
Ghostscript as optional could lead to crashing bugs. The recommended
approach (as I recall) was to not separate things so much in the
ghostscript packaging, but my alternate approach was to instead tighten
the relationship with those packages independently providing the files
which was ripped out of the IMO too "monolithic-minded" source tree.

I will try have in mind if that dependency can be safely relaxed, but it
is of less concern to me now that I recall the reasoning (and have
now put it vaguely on record).

I agree that there are issues with the gs-cjk-resource package. It is
plural issues: also one of or'ing the relationships for the multiple
CJK supportive areas instead of declaring them independently. I have
encouraged the maintainer to move it to co-maintainance at the Debian
Printing Team with the intend of helping weed out things like that
myself, but have not yet heard back on that proposal. I have not yet
been bothered enough to file bugreports yet (for some weird reason I
find it more bothersome to file bugreports than to fully package code
and maintain it for years).

I'm sorry for delayed response.

No problem :-)

It is OK to do co-maintainance gs-cjk-resource and cmap-adobe-*
packages at the Debian Printing Team, and count me in the team.

Unfortunately because at this time (will be till summer) I'm in
terrible busy, feel free to modify it.

Good. I will take care of that, then, and of these concrete issues of
package relations.

Is it ok that I repackage in one source per upstream source?

Is it ok that I move the packaging to Git (in collab-maint at Alioth)?

Is it ok that I repackage using CDBS?

If not, then I will only touch the packaging as least possible, as I
cannot work comfortable with the current style of it (no offense!).

Kind regards,

 - Jonas

I have not observed this before. It could have fixed accidentally in

Well. I don't think that rewriting as a separate tool the part of make
that parses the Makefile and builds the dag is a good idea. That code
seems error-prone to me, and if you do so, you'll have to maintain your
code afterward.

Obviously, adding this to make should not complicate make very much:
it's just like dumping an information that make already has in memory,
and it solves the issue of the maintainability of the parser: make
maintainers already take care of the parser.

For each target of the file, print:
$(target): the complete list of all dependencies, including dependencies
of dependencies, and dep of dep of dep of dep, and ...

If we are by designing the feature, you could also have make listing all
(recursive) dependencies of a given target instead of listing them of
every target of the file.

Does it sound reasonable?

Bug#613800: pstoimg: -multipage with -geometry and -margins goes haywire

2011-02-17 Thread Hamish
Package: latex2html
Version: 2008-debian1-5
Severity: normal

Hi,

The -geometry and -margins options work well for me on a single page
PostScript file. But if I try them with a multipage postscript file the
resulting images jump all over the place in the final image. It's as if
some origin variable is not reset to 0,0 between each page or something.
If I just use -multipage without the -geometry and -margins options it
works well.

command line looks like:

pstoimg -aaliastext -antialias -depth 24 -scale 2 \
-geometry 563x369 -margins 22,255 -multipage $IMAGE.ps

for testing you can create a sample multipage postscript file simply
by `cat`ing a few (or the same) .ps file together into another file:
  cat file.ps file.ps file.ps > file3.ps

workaround: use `pnmcut` from netpbm tools to do it manually after
pstoimg without -geometry and -margins:
# crop off the empty space in the images using NetPBM tools:
mkdir -p crop
for IMG in *.png ; do
  pngtopnm "$IMG" | \
 pnmcut -width 1156 -height 778 -left 34 -top 487 | \
 pnmtopng > "crop/$IMG"
done
cd crop/

thanks,
Hamish

Bug#520262: Still the case?

2011-02-17 Thread Sebastian Spaeth
First of all, is the mbnames files still needed by mutt? Or could this
finally be removed?

Second, the mbnames.py has not been touched since 2003, but looking at
it, we certainly only ever open the file for writing when we write out
all the names in one go and close() the file immediately.

So the only case this could happen if a different thread crashes while
we are writing out things.

I believe you are seeing the behavior you are seeing, but I can't
explain where it could come from. What we will be able to do, is to
protect other threads from aborting without properly closing down
things.

Bug#613501: Workaround available in openvz git

2011-02-17 Thread Vladimir Kuklin
There is a workaround for this bug at openvz git. Delayed allocation
must be turned off in order for OpenVZ container to start on ext4
filesystem.

See this

http://bugzilla.openvz.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1777

git commit is here:

http://git.openvz.org/?p=linux-2.6.32-openvz;a=commit;h=3e89668abca56e6e11e1bbb9cbac1008d3c2357b

Please, don't forward it again to openvz devs. Just include it into
patchset for 2.6.32-5-openvz kernel update.

Because it does not set it at all, it only ever uses the first two
parameters of MarkInstall, so FromUser is always true.

Anybody who wants to revive aptitude development should look into
modernizing these parts.

Modifying ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list doesn't work here
(and I don't see any other place where it could be overridden). But
changing /etc/gnome/defaults.list works; even if I find it not optimal
as I would like to only change the default browser for me, not

Bug#594179: dpkg armhf patch acceptance status?

2011-02-17 Thread Loïc Minier
Hey

Trying to kick the dust a bit as having the triplet "in the air" is
kind of an unhappy situation for armhf :-)

On Wed, Sep 08, 2010, Guillem Jover wrote:

So this use case is "CC=arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc dpkg-buildpackage" and it
just guesses the -a flag that you should have set?

You describe this as a bug/misfeature, that might be true but I don't
think we can challenge this usage of triplets in the upstream
toolchain, and multiarch is moving to having its own tuples instead now
 (http://wiki.debian.org/Multiarch/Tuples).

Even if we could co-install them, I'm not sure how
 /some-armel-path/arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc and
/some-armhf-path/arm-linux-gnueabi-gcc could helpfully be installed on
 the same system :-/

It's a real limitation of the upstream toolchain.

> Also that also happens with biarch, you can produce i386 binaries from

Yes but x86 goes to the other extreme, with separate triplets for
compatible ABIs ({i386,i486,i586,i686}-linux-gnu); the fact is the
triplet is not a good ABI specifier.

Having a separate triplet (not using the vendor field) like e.g. lpia
would mean a lot of pain IMO, and we'd have to fix many packages to
cope with it, including reaching out to upstream etc. It was pain for
 lpia for sure.

We could have an additional set of preprocessor macros which dpkg
checks for to decide which Debian architecture we're talking about; the
the would only be done if there is more than one architecture using the
same triplet in dpkg tables. This alone is a bit fragile though, as it
means that if a new ABI is introduced to an existing triplet and is not
immediately added as a new dpkg architecture, then people might be
picking the wrong dpkg architecture when using a toolchain defaulting
 to thenew ABI.

I wonder whether it would be a good idea to use multiarch tuples
internally; dpkg would still have to map to/from GNU triplets, but it
would force implementors to think about their ABI. I am not sure how
we can ensure that we've mapped to the right tuple though. Neither am
I sure that the multiarch tuples are frozen already, so it might be too
 early for that either.

Bye

We have vonverted all places in folder/* to have self.ui available,
rather than having to use UIBase.getglobalui() all the

This patch does it belatedly. This fixes

Please apply to master, this one unbreaks another crash that results from converting most but not all users of UIBase.getglobalui() to self.ui.

Bug#613804: RFA: libdaemons-ruby -- Ruby daemons library

2011-02-17 Thread Filipe Lautert
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I request an adopter for the libdaemons-ruby package.

Bug#613803: bash: Please use system-provided malloc() implementation rather than internal one

2011-02-17 Thread Karol Lewandowski

Package: bash
Version: 4.1-3
Severity: normal

Bash uses its own malloc implementation for unknown reasons (at least to
me).

This implementation dates back to 4.2BSD (according to INSTALL) and
uses brk() which seems to be obsoleted interface.

In our complicated test scenario involving

  make -> scratchbox2 -> bash

we have ecountered situation when brk(), as used by bash's malloc,
fails causing SIGSEGV in bash.

Reading through strace(1) output I've come to following pattern
causing failure:

 0. Kernel's ASLR have to be disabled (kernel.randomize_va_space=0).
This setting directly affects addresses as returned from kernel's
mmap(2) system call (this is the root of problem).

With ASLR enabled it also happens but bug insn't that evident
(it's non-deterministic).

 1. Dynamic linker is run and loads all required libraries - dl uses
mmap(2) to allocate required memory. mmap(2) from kernel returns
addreses that are just one page after original program break, i.e.

  dl_mem = (uintptr_t)(sbrk(0) + getpagesize()) & ~(getpagesize() - 1)

 2. Bash is finnaly run and tries to allocate memory using brk(addr)

This fails as memory above program break was already allocated by
dynamic linker (see 2).

Please see (filtered) strace output below.

Solution seems rather simple - configure bash with --wihout-bash-malloc
to use system/glibc-provided malloc. From our testing this seems to fix
this issue.

Thanks!

Bug#613805: RFP: nfs-ganesha -- NFS server running in User Space

2011-02-17 Thread Robert Millan
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: nfs-ganesha
* URL : http://nfs-ganesha.sourceforge.net/
* License : LGPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : NFS server running in User Space

NFS-GANESHA is a NFS server running in User Space. It is available under the
LGPL license.

It has been designed to meet two goals:

* providing very large metadata and data caches (up to millions of records)
* providing NFS exports to various files systems and namespaces (a set of
data organized as trees, with a structure similar to a files system)

NFS-GANESHA uses dedicated backend modules called FSAL (which stand for File
System Abstraction Layer) that provided the product with a unique API (used
internally) to access the underlying namespace. The FSAL module is basically
the "glue" between the namespace and the other part of NFS-GANESHA

Available FSALs are:

* FSAL/XFS : provides NFS frontend to XFS filesystems
* FSAL/ZFS : provides with a way to export ZFS's pool with NFS-GANESHA
* FSAL/LUSTRE : provides NFS frontend to LUSTRE filesystems (Lustre 2 or
higher is required for this FSAL)
* FSAL/PROXY: the module is in fact a NFSv4 client. Used with NFS-GANESHA,
it turns the NFS server into a NFS proxy server. This module is still in its
alpha version
* FSAL/FUSELIKE: many product use FUSE to have NFS export. Often they
resided in the user space. NFS-GANESHA is in user space too, and via this
module it allow user space product to have NFS export from user space, without
explicit kernel communication. The module use the same interface as the
classical fuse binding: if your application have a fuse binding module ready,
you'll need nothing else to interface it with NFS-GANESHA. For this specific
use, the NFS-GANESHA's engine is wrap in a library to be use and compile with
your proprieritary application.
* FSAL/SNMP: information available via SNMP are organized as trees, they
constitute a namespace. This backend module provides with the capability to
export SNMP information data via NFS and browse them in a "procfs-like" way.
* FSAL/POSIX: this module is based on the well known POSIX API which is
included in the LibC. It allows NFS export for anything accessible via the
POSIX interface. POSIX API addresses files and directories by their names
(which are volatile identifiers, they may change if object is renamed). FSAL
API uses persistent, opaque, unique identifier called handles. Because a this,
FSAL/POSIX use the service of a PostGresQL database to perform "reverse lookup"
from handle to filename.

Bug#613806: ITP: mplayer2 -- next generation movie player for Unix-like systems

2011-02-17 Thread Reinhard Tartler
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Reinhard Tartler

* Package name: mplayer2
  Version : 2.0beta1
  Upstream Author : Uoti Urpala
* URL : http://www.mplayer2.org/
* License : GPL
  Programming Lang: C
Description : next generation movie player for Unix-like systems

MPlayer plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, Ogg/OGM, VIVO, ASF/WMA/WMV,
QT/MOV/MP4, FLI, RM, NuppelVideo, yuv4mpeg, FILM, RoQ, PVA files,
supported by many native, XAnim, RealPlayer, and Win32 DLL codecs. It
can also play VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, RealMedia, and DivX movies.

Another big feature of MPlayer is the wide range of supported output
drivers. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, DirectFB,
but also SDL (plus all its drivers) and some low level card-specific
drivers (for Matrox, 3Dfx and Radeon, Mach64 and Permedia3). Most of
them support software or hardware scaling, therefore allowing fullscreen
display. MPlayer is also able to use some hardware MPEG decoder boards,
such as the DVB and DXR3/Hollywood+.

The text above is copied from the existing mplayer package. It is
basically a well-known and quite popular fork of mplayer. TBH, I'm a bit
unsure what to do with it. From the first look, it seems that mplayer2
is better suited for being included in a distro release, but not (yet)
in its current form. Currently, it includes a copy of ffmpeg-mt, a
well-known fork of the ffmpeg package, which features multithreaded h264
decoding and actually is already in debian as part of the
chromium-browser package. While ffmpeg-mt is currently being
integrated/merged into ffmpeg upstream, mplayer2's future is not that
certain.

Having this in mind, I intend to maintain the package under the
pkg-multimedia umbrella. mplayer2 shoudl go to experimental for now,
including ffmpeg-mt. Help and ideas with that is more than welcome!

It's a reportbug issue, not monit (e.g., you can reproduce this "bug"
on the "at" package, with at.deny conffile).

You can suppress inclusion of the configuration files. Please, consult
the reportbug documentation.

> Moreover, under some conditions (e.g. reportbug is run as root, even

Again, please read documentation. reportbug manpage says about
configuration files: "By default, _you are asked if you want to include
them_; in some cases, doing so may cause sensitive information to
be sent via email."

So, I will close this bugreport. It's not a bug.

Good. I will take care of that, then, and of these concrete issues
of package relations.

Is it ok that I repackage in one source per upstream source?
Is it ok that I move the packaging to Git (in collab-maint at Alioth)?
Is it ok that I repackage using CDBS?

Of course they are OK!

Thanks.

(and no, I do not take for granted it is ok "infecting" with CDBS)

Bug#595482: (no subject)

2011-02-17 Thread Ian Abbott
Since this package is now considered "stable", it would be really handy
if this bug could be fixed by modifying the CFLAGS as J suggested in the
original report. My main concern is that amavisd-new depends on 'pax'
but this bug in pax causes amavisd-new to avoid checking any tar file
for viruses. It thinks any such tar files are a mail bomb, due to the
mis-reported sizes of the contents.

At the moment, I have to hold back pax to the earlier 1.5-1 version just
to avoid this bug.

So that the admin can read the log file without logging as root.
See the other log files (auth.log, boot, daemon.log, debug, dmesg,
kern.log, messages, syslog, user.log). The log files that have the
root group are readable by everyone.

Is there any reason why monit should behave differently?

Bug#613807: initscripts: /etc/network/if-up.d/mountnfs fails, if /var/run/network/mountnfs exists

2011-02-17 Thread Bjoern Buerger
Package: initscripts
Version: 2.88dsf-13.1
Severity: important

This may be a duplicate of #550883

However: Since the initscripts package introduces /etc/network/if-up.d/mountnfs
to the system, this package should provide a solution for proper
lockfile/lockdir
handling instead of the mount package.

Description:
Apparently, the temporary directory /var/run/network/mountnfs was not removed
during a failed system startup. On any following startup, no nfs mounts where
done whatsoever, leading to a very poor user experience e.g. users log in via
gdm/xdm and get error messages complaining about missing home directory ($HOME
is located on a network share), etc.

Although this is not strictly "critical", it should be fixed soon.

to reproduce the problem:

mkdir -p /var/run/network/mountnfs
reboot

On my EEE 900A the FN-F2 button no longer toggles Wifi after update from
Lenny to Squeeze (stable). The symptoms of my problem are equivalent to what
I found under "https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=595586";.

They identified the problem ("eeepc driver tries to bind to 01:00:00 PCI
device, but wifi is at 02:00:00"), solved it, and produced kernels
which work. I just want to increase chances that the patch will be applied in
debian too.

No, I think that $HOST is obtained from /etc/hostname (AFAIK, it is
set by Debian at installation time).

This is incorrect. You should not do this, see hosts(5) man page.

"hostname -f" will report host.domain.tld, but this is not $HOST
(which is used by monit).

The user should not have to do this. Message-Id generation should
be correct with the default configuration (other software, like

I believe if /var/run wasn't cleaned during boot, you have a problem
elsewhere. It is supposed to be removed during boot by
/etc/init.d/mountnfs-bootclean.sh, I believe. Personally I would
recommend using tmpfs for /var/run, but have not spent any time to try
to push this project-wide. :)
