Bug#611238: logrotate: wrong order of compression and script execution
Package: logrotate Version: 3.7.8-6 Severity: normal Tags: squeeze Dear all, according to the logrotate man page the script is executed after compression: "The sharedscripts means that the postrotate script will only be run once (after the old logs have been com‐ pressed) [...]". This was the case with lenny, but is not with squeeze. As a result at the time of the script execution I see log.1 instead of log.1.gz. Please fix the man page or revert the change of order. However because your device name is quite long df has split the entry over two lines which causes the awk expresion to print the wrong thing (nothing in fact). Maks, perhaps "df -P" helps? It's always annoyed me that there is no (to my knowledge) simple "get the device name / mount point for this path" tool in Unix. Alternatively if mount took an option which caused it to just print the information pertaining to a given path (inferring the relevant mount point from it) then that would be very useful. Bug#611245: libqtserviceframework1: Please drop hal dependency
Package: libqtserviceframework1 Version: 1.1.0~beta2-1 HAL has been deprecated and unmaintained for several years now [1], and it's time to clean up the remaining usage of it, as it's only going to bitrot and break more. This package still depends on hal. It doesn't build depend on it, but it seems like the code talks to Hal's D-BUS interface directly. Are there any plans to move that to libudev? Failing that, could that dependency at least become a Suggests: instead? Bug#561923: grub-pc: Automatically convert background images to suitable format
Am Mittwoch, den 26.01.2011, 14:36 + schrieb Colin Watson: > My main concern is that in future I want GRUB_GFXMODE to be dynamic, > detected from VBE at boot time (it's already this way in Ubuntu). This > means that userspace wouldn't know what size to convert to. That's a valid argument against doing automatic conversions. I've got two more: a) Adding ImageMagick as an extra dependency would pull in over 100 additional packages with a total size of over 50 MB. I don't think this is desirable, especially as the benefit wouldn't be that large. b) Adding support for using ImageMagick to 05_debian_theme only if available would make the code much more complicated and add a number of special cases. Consider the following example: The background image is directly readable by GRUB: Normally no caching would be necessary, but if you have ImageMagick installed the picture would be automatically converted and stored under /boot/grub/. This may be useful in some cases, however if GRUB could have read the picture without any extra conversion this is just a waste of (possible precious) disk space. Consequently we would have to add logic to determine whether converting the background image is useful. I really don't think that's the task of a bootloader. > Can't we do whatever conversion is needed at boot time instead? GRUB > has some fairly sophisticated image processing facilities nowadays. After doing some testing, I think that there are actually no conversions necessary. I've tested all the pictures from these paths /usr/share/backgrounds/cosmos/ /usr/share/images/desktop-base/ /usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/gnome/nature/ plus some private pictures from my digital camera. Apart from #611123[1] everything worked just fine - regardless of resolution or file format of the pictures. IMHO this bug can be closed beginning with version 1.98-1 (this version added support for bitmap scaling). Any objections? Package: gnat-4.4 Version: 4.4.5-3 Severity: normal On the way to have polyorb on armel architecture I have some problems already related in [1]. I have tracked the problem down to the generation of libpolyorb-giop.so. The shared lib generation include a -lgnarl-4.4 in the command line. If I remove it the symbol problem is solved for this library. If I run exactly the same command on amd64 architecture with the -lgnarl-4.4 option I get a libpolyorb-giop.so without the symbols. Bug#611249: gcc-4.4: Fix PR44606 concerning powerpcspe architecture
Package: src:gcc-4.4 Version: 4.4.5-9 Severity: normal Tags: patch Hi, the attached .debdiff fixes PR44606 [1], a register-allocation bug that (seldomly) miscompiles floating point code in the unofficial powerpcspe port [2]. This is a backport of commit 168347 from GCC svn [3]. The patch modifies debian/rules.patch to only apply the patch on powerpcspe, so there should be no side-effects on other architectures. I verified the patch to compile and be effective on a powerpcspe sid installation running on a P2020RDB development board. I guess the same patch should go into gcc-4.3 as well, going to post a corresponding bug report in the next days. cheers, David [1] http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=44606 [2] http://wiki.debian.org/PowerPCSPEPort [3] http://gcc.gnu.org/viewcvs?view=revision&revision=168347 -- GnuPG public key: http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~dvdkhlng/dk.gpg Fingerprint: B17A DC95 D293 657B 4205 D016 7DEF 5323 C174 7D40 pr44606.debdiff Description: Binary data pgpm2CSBKvTm6.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#611254: dokuwiki: Permission access issue with lighttpd

You should consider to correct the postinst > script, in order to dokuwiki works out of the box. (I do not know if you > can enable such modules in a non lighttpd related package). I think I cannot. There may be several ways of running PHP, and if installing the appropriate module package for a given web server does not enable it, I do not think I should do it instead in my package. To rephrase it, if installing lighttpd and php5-cgi does not enable the required modules, I will not mix up with it to enable them as it could cause too much problems, so it will be the responsability of the user. The default dependency resolutions installs apache2-mod-php5, that enables itself, and everything works. If you want to use an alternative server instead, as there is no package that enables everything needed, you will just get the correct packages installed by dependency and have to put the pieces together by hand. However, what I can do is to document that in the README.Debian, explaining that, outside of the default installation, enabling the correct modules is the responsibility of the user. I am open to better solutions, if you can suggest one. :-) -- ,--. : /` ) Tanguy Ortolo | `-'Debian Maintainer \_ signature.asc Description: Digital signature

My suspicion is that you have "delaycompress" set: delaycompress Postpone compression of the previous log file to the next rota‐ tion cycle. We have a few other patches which are part of trunk > but not part of stable branches. So we need to consider those as well > or we brake things what were working. Thanks for pointing that out. I got the GCC source to patch against from standard debian repository, since debian-ports does not carry sources. Now I realized, that there is a .diff.gz in pool-powerpcspe/main/g/gcc-4.4/. Is there some easy and straight-forward way to grab corresponding source packages in a powerpcspe system? Going to try to build a fixed gcc via the ppcspe specific source. Any plans to move your patches into the normal gcc package? >> The patch modifies debian/rules.patch to only apply the patch on >> powerpcspe, so there should be no side-effects on other >> architectures. > Not sure if this is wise. There is an _all package which containts the > patched source. This source is used afaik for gcj. So this would work > for +powerpcspe package but won't work in the official debian package. Hmm, the complexity of debian's gcc building starts giving me headaches. I saw that there were many arch-specific patches already in rules.patch, so thought that was standard practice. Are you sure this is a problem? Are you sure patches are applied before building the _all package? According to READEM.maintainers: When we build from the gcc-4.3 source package, we produce, among many others, a gcc-4.3-source binary package that contains the pristine upstream tarball and some Debian-specific patches. Any user can then install this package on their Debian system, and will have the full souces in /usr/src/gcc-4.3/gcc-.tar.bz2, along with the Makefile snippets that unpack and patch them. [..] The second step is to unpack the GCC source tarball. This tarball is either in the build directory (when building gcc-4.3), or in /usr/src/gcc-4.3/gcc-.tar.bz2 (when building the other source packages). The fourth step is to select which patches to apply (this is done in debian/rules.defs), and then to apply the selected patches (see debian/rules.patch). So that sounds like most of the patches being applied on top of the gcc-4.4-source package when building gcc, gcj etc. >> I verified the patch to compile and be effective on a powerpcspe sid >> installation running on a P2020RDB development board. > cool. >> I guess the same patch should go into gcc-4.3 as well, going to post >> a corresponding bug report in the next days. > No, I'm dropping gcc-4.3. There is little need in keeping it as all > software compiles with 4.4+ Ok. I heared from colleagues, that gcc-4.3 were more stable then 4.4, but maybe that's just broken code on our sides and I'll try to make sure that we drop 4.3, too. cheers, David -- GnuPG public key: http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~dvdkhlng/dk.gpg Fingerprint: B17A DC95 D293 657B 4205 D016 7DEF 5323 C174 7D40 pgpNMoePN6TrS.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#611233: rst2xml can not create valid DocBook XML-code for Publican
severity 611233 wishlist retitle 611233 python-docutils: please provide reStructuredText -> DocBook XML converter thanks * Juhapekka Tolvanen , 2011-01-27, 04:13: Please check out files in this WWW-directory: http://iki.fi/juhtolv/tmp/bugreports/python-docutils/01/harjoitukset/ When I run that script called compileall.sh almost everything works like a charm. Even Tidy thinks XML-code that rst2xml created is valid. But when Publican tries to validate (let alone convert) that XML-code, it gives umpteen gazillion errors. They all can be seen in that file publican_errors.txt . Thanks for your bug report. I'm afraid that errors you are seeing are expected: rst2xml doesn't produce DocBook XML documents (and it was never intended to do so!), which is the format Publican expects. I retitled the bug report and changed its severity accordingly, but to be honest, it's unlikely it will be fixed any time soon. The question about rST->DocBook conversion has been asked on the Docutils mailing list at least once[0]. Also, at least according to its package description, pandoc[1] is able to do the necessary conversion. I guess the same patch should go into gcc-4.3 as well, going to post a corresponding bug report in the next days. cheers, David [1] http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=44606 [2] http://wiki.debian.org/PowerPCSPEPort [3] http://gcc.gnu.org/viewcvs?view=revision&revision=168347 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Anyway, I'm certainly not against this, but d-i has traditionally been rather wary about growing new features. That said, bonding doesn't require extra utilities (being fully configurable through sysfs), so this probably isn't a serious issue. -- Cheers, Feri. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#611263: libgtk2.0-0: Segfault in gtk_notebook_real_switch_page()
Package: libgtk2.0-0 Version: 2.12.12-1~lenny2 Severity: normal Tags: patch Emitting 'switch_page' signal for a GtkNotebook causes segfault. Function gtk_notebook_real_switch_page() is called with page=NULL but this pointer is dereferenced in the first statement. See other details in gtk-perl mailing list archive. Search thread "Gtk2::Notebook and switch-page signal". E.g. http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gtk-perl-list/2011-January/msg00018.html Adding a simple pointer check solves the problem. See attached patch. The problem found and fixed on lenny but the very similar code of version 2.20.1 in squeeze probably also suffers this. And probably later with wmii. Recently dmenu got installed on my debian unstable because of the "browse" package depends on it. The uzbl folks recommend dmenu from time to time too. I love when I find out that the software I'm using does exactly what it should do. That leaves 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10. > 5,6) Still needs to be changed. Maybe move to it's own section about > access control. I think this section should be moved to at.allow(5). I will submit a patch against git separately. I don't think there's any conflict between specifying that an empty /etc/at.deny is the default, while shipping a non-empty one on Debian, but arguably it's simpler just to remove the bit about the default, as any user will need to check whether /etc/at.{deny,allow} exist on their system in any case. The first part of point 6 is already addressed by the existing documentation, but it will be clearer when moved to at.allow(5). The documentation clearly states that output is mailed, optionally using the command MAIL_CMD, which answers the second part of point 6, about syslog: at cannot normally use syslog, but you could fake up a MAIL_CMD which logged the output instead of mailing it. I don't think this needs spelling out in the man page. Point 10 will be addressed by moving the full documentation on at.allow to at.allow(5). > 8,9) Still needs to be changed. timespec is not user-friendly either :/ Point 8 can be addressed by simply deleting the word "exact" from at(1) :) I'll include this in my patch. At least, this is what happened during a short test I just did. Thanks for hint. But from onscreen dialog it is not obvious what will do: will it skip the erase step or will it cancel it and go to previous pre-erase step. Is it possible to name that button as "Skip" or provide an explanatory text, something like "If you think that there is no need for erasing previously stored data (e.g. disk was empty or already erased), hit to skip this step." -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#611175: zsh: VCS_INFO wrongly detects svn repositories

That sounds reasonable. Do you know how stable the "entries" file is within the .svn directories with respect to versions? Ie. Does it exist in old versions as well as in recent ones? (My knowledge of subversion's directory contents are rather limited.) > I suggest to check the other revison control systems as well. The other backends should not suffer from this problems. All others that look for a directory to detect a VCS already look for a file in addition to the directory. I don't remember why we didn't do this for svn earlier, too. Thus, if gitweb is to be moved to the git package, the documentation should either go into git, or git-doc. > and make the role of the gitweb package backward compatibility I'd second on this. > and autoconfiguration with those webservers (apache) that support it. I see nothing wrong with the main git package providing autoconfiguration for Web servers. In particular, while configuring an unsupported Web server to work with gitweb, the administrator may choose to consult the Apache configuration files. Having to install Apache to do just that may be too inconvenient. It's not uncommon to have seemingly “useless” files of such a kind. As an example, I could vaguely recall that there're (were?) a dozen or so packages that provide a /etc/logrotate.d/ file without actually mentioning logrotate in the dependencies. Consider, e. g.: $ dpkg -s dpkg | grep logrotate /etc/logrotate.d/dpkg 782ea5ae536f67ff51dc8c3e2eeb4cf9 $ dpkg -L dpkg | grep logrotate /etc/logrotate.d /etc/logrotate.d/dpkg $ >> Therefore, I deem the current Depends: on apache2 | httpd as >> somewhat too tight. No objections on moving all the contents of the gitweb package to the main git package (provided that it will never negatively affect the dependencies of the latter), and, if necessary, git-doc, and retaining the gitweb package for compatibility / transition. > Side note: have you thought about adding lynx support to git instaweb > (git-instaweb.sh in the source)? Bug#611274: fontconfig: Please add ability to "hide" certain fonts from font selectors
Package: fontconfig Version: 2.8.0-2.1 Severity: wishlist Tags: upstream Hi, there are some fonts installed on my system (and on other peoples' systems, too, I guess) that are useless for normal writing, e.g. ttf-lyx or ttf- opensymbol. These fonts do often merely contain mathematical or similar symbols but no normal letters. However, whenever I click on the font selector in OOo-writer or a similar application, these fonts appear there among the other "normal" fonts as if I would ever select them for writing. The truth is, whenever I want to include a non-letter symbol in my text, I choose the "Insert -> Special character ..." menu or paste the symbol from gucharmap, instead of learning which key is mapped to which symbol in these fonts. It would be nice if fontconfig provided a way to "tag" symbol-only fonts in order to distinguish them from normal fonts that are actually applicable for writing texts. Fonts tagged with this attribute could then be omitted from lists thsat are presented to the user to choose from for writing texts. Of course, this is definitely an upstream issue and applications would have to be adapted, but I think this will be very convenient for users.
