i don't think they make sense. could explain why you think this should
be changed?

not for 2.x, since that's in maintenance mode. for 3.x, we're going to
drop a lot of code and support multistrap only. and multistrap already
allows to cross-bootstrap, so there's not much point in adding
qemu-debootstrap support. what do you think?

Wrong. It's an install failure, so it's serious per definition (still RC, so..)

Does fine here. You are upgrading, I assume? Did you have -filter-binfilter 
installed
befaore *correctly*? Seems it is registered in 
/usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.2/registered-components
although not being there?

And the obvious notice: In -8 nothing in that place changed.

Eh, you have LibreOffice packages from experimental installed here. Note that
OOo and LibO are *not* supposed to work at the same system as the packages are
designed. No idea whether that's the cause here, but you have at least the 
integral
ure package from LibreOffice and not OpenOffice.org...
 
Clean that up, please. (Yes, the OOo->LibO upgrade needs to be finished, and 
downgrades
are not supported)

That's great! :) I think that we can wait for ~1 week and if the new
gkrellm doesn't fail you, I can close this bug as fixed in the recent

At the time lenny was out, we only had these code drops for
kvm (at version kvm-72).  We had 2 alternatives: either ship
it as it were, or not ship it.  The technology is cool and
hot and so on, even if it were known to be pre-alpha version.

Besides, no one knew at that time how many bugs and issues
it had, it looked like a stable-behaving software.

Even kernel part of kvm _guest_ (especially timer stuff) in
lenny is broken in numerous ways.

Um.  Now it's you who did not understand me ;)
But this is no surprize - I were very very tired
yesterday after a hard work, so my wording isn't
at all clear, even to me myself when I read what
I wrote :)

What I tried to say is that when you install it
to virtio disk, the install goes find but the
guest isn't bootable after that.  I.e., you
can't reboot a guest from virtio if you booted
it from a virtial CD.

Scratch what I said above about IDE.  Yes that
can be used too, and you can install into IDE
virtual disk and later switch to using virtio,
but that requires quite some understanding --
at least, /etc/fstab and grub conf files has
to be edited to change /dev/sda to /dev/vda.
But ok...

It does not matter where physically the guest disk image is
located and which format it uses on the host.  From the guest
point of view, including guest bios, it is completely transparent.
Except that some variants are faster, some slower and the like.

But let's make this thing clear.

What I do to install squeeze into a virtual machine:

1. Create a new image or clear previously existing one.
   Just to be sure there's nothing in the target virtual drive.

 $ kvm-img create guest.raw 2G

  Not doing so with an existing image does not hurt, you'll
  just have to tell the installer to remove unnecessary
  partitions and answer to a few "Are you sure?" questions.
  You can clear an lvm image too, using, for example,
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/lvm/guestimg bs=1M count=1
  (this clears first megabyte of the volume).  But this
  is not related to the issue at hand, just some side
  notes.

2. Now install the guest using netinst cd:

 $ kvm \
   -drive file=guest.raw,if=virtio \
   -cdrom squeeze-netinst.iso \
   -boot d \
   -net [enable networking so it can access debian mirrors]

   I omited other options here for brevity.
   Here I told it to boot from a (virtual) CD-Rom drive.

3. When install completes, the installer reboots, and if
   you reboot the virtual machine at this point, it will
   boot from cdrom again.  Not what we need.
   So I edit kvm command line to tell it to boot the newly
   installed OS:

 $ kvm \
   -drive file=guest.raw,if=virtio,boot=on \
   -net [enable networking so it can access debian mirrors]

 At this point it boots just fine.

This is like going into BIOS of a physical machine and changing
the device to boot from, if your machine does not have a
working "BOOT Menu" feature.

This is how I install it.  Now please show me how do _you_
install things, so I can reproduce your issue.

pppconfig is an interactive, menu driven utility to help automate setting   

 
up a dial up ppp connection.  It currently supports PAP, CHAP, and chat 

 
authentication.  It uses the standard pppd configuration files.  It does

 
not make a connection to your isp, it just configures your system so that 
you can do so with a utility such as pon.  It can detect your modem, and 
it can configure ppp for dynamic dns, multiple ISP's and demand dialing. 

Before running pppconfig you should know what sort of authentication your 
isp requires, the username and password that they want you to use, and the 
phone number.  If they require you to use chat authentication, you will 
also need to know the login and password prompts and any other prompts and 
responses required for login.  If you can't get this information from your 
isp you could try dialing in with minicom and working through the procedure 
until you get the garbage that indicates that ppp has started on the other 
end. 

Since pppconfig makes changes in system configuration files, you must be 
logged in as root or use sudo to run it.

'--version' prints the version. '--help' prints a help message.

Bug#603542: /usr/bin/tmux: tmux crashes on attach-session

When doing 'tmux attach-session -d' from a terminal window that is
smaller than the window where the tmux session was running before, the
tmux server crashes, causing everything running under that server to
die.

This bug also affects Ubuntu, which is where I originally experienced
it: https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tmux/+bug/671066

This does not happen with tmux built from CVS HEAD without Debian
patches.

So apparently this is due to one or more Debian-specific patches. Here
are some comments on that from the tmux developer on IRC:

35  i said this was a bad move at the time, because you
don't want to kill the entire server just because you can't fix the
terminal when a client exits
000139  in HEAD this patch won't do this though, because we make
the tty blocking again before calling tty_raw()
000143  but its still a bad move
000214  really we should leave it nonblocking and retry on
EAGAIN, but who cares tbh, worst case the user has to type "reset"
000346  and typically the reason write() would fail is because
the terminal has actually gone (ie ssh network disconnect or eg xterm
was closed)
000447  we are quite careful not to fatal in the tty shutdown
path because ssh particularly can leave us with an invalid fd
000518  actually in HEAD we set it blocking again AFTER calling
tty_raw() so it'd still be an issue with the patch
000551  this is because there is some retarded gcc option that
complains when write() returns are ignored

Bug#603545: globbing: e.g. zz* expands to z zz

Hello, this is my first real bug report ever.  I'm sorry if I make
a mess of it.  I tried to use reportbug, but it crashed when I
submitted my report.

The tcsh bug:  If there are two files, such as "z" and "zz", in
the current directory, then zz* expands to both files.

This can cause unexpected data loss when for instance copying or
moving files.  It could also destabilise the system if the system
ran tcsh scripts.  Possibly there could be security vulnerabilities.

The version I am using to produce the bug is 6.17.02 (from sid).
I compiled version 6.17.00 of tcsh from source obtained through
www.tcsh.org and the bug is not there manifest.  (zz* expands to
only zz.)

I was expecting the tcsh.org version number to be higher?  I suppose
I didn't find the development repo, but the bug exists on the
Debian 6.17.02 version in any case.

On each update I need verify my smb.conf file and resolve conflicts.
Please add "include" directive in smb.conf file and create
"/etc/samba/smb.d" dir. This standart configuration hack in many other
packages.

"Iceowl-extension" users will be forced to get Mozilla upstream Lightning 
addon to get a fully localized calendar extension and so messing Debian 
packages with Mozilla ones.

What is it needed? :-?

Lightning seems to be working fine with Iceweasel and is fully 
translated.

bug #601568 (Bug in scoring matrix incurs errors in indel calling.) in
bwa/0.5.8a-1 is serios according to upstream and fixed in bwa/0.5.8c-1
which is just in unstable.  The package itself is of some importance for
the Debian Med team because it concerns new generation sequencing a
quite chalanging field in genetic research.  It would be great if you
could unblock bwa/0.5.8c-1 to have the fixed version in Squeeze.

Bug#603549: ure 1.7.0+LibO3.3.0~beta2-2 breaks openoffice 1:3.2.1-7

I temporarily upgraded to libreoffice from experimental. After
downgrading back to openoffice from sid, openoffice didn't start any
longer, but only displayed the following error message:

/usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin: 
/usr/lib/openoffice/program/../basis-link/program/../ure-link/lib/libjvmaccessgcc3.so.3:
 version `UDK_3.1' not found (required by 
/usr/lib/openoffice/program/../basis-link/program/libvcllx.so)

This was caused by the version of ure from experimental being still
installed. Downgrading ure to 1.6.1+OOo3.2.1-7 fixed the issue.

So I think the packages are missing an appropriate
Conficts/Breaks/versioned Depends header.

As long as this only occurs with packages from experimental, this is just
a minor annoyance - but it should probably be fixed before libreoffice
goes to sid.

other reports) and the changes in 5.10.1-15 seem unlikely to cause
something like this.

My best guess is that this is either a problem with your system or some
corner case in apt-get / dpkg interaction but this is all just handwaving.

Tagging as unreproducible, let's wait a while for any other reports. The
package just migrated to squeeze so there should be plenty of people
upgrading in the next few days.


Now that we've seen 5.10.1-16 migrate to squeeze too after ten days in
unstable and no other reports of anything like this, I think it's clear
this is not an issue with the perl package.

I'm downgrading the severity so that RC bughunters can concentrate on other
things. TBH, I don't see much point in keeping the bug open at all.

Roger, please let me know if you're OK with closing this or if you want it
reassigned somewhere else. Personally I doubt the dpkg or apt maintainers
can do much about it either.

My notebook have the following sound card:

When I tested the actual Debian Squeeze live CD with containing 
linux-image-2.6.32-5-486 and linux-image-2.6.32-5-686 packaged versions, my 
sound card is not working, unfortunately I haven't hear any sound.
This is inportant me, because I using Orca screen reader with software speech, 
and haven't got a braille device or sighted assistance always to help 
identifying why not working in Squeeze this integrated sound card.
Please not surprise if you see incorrect data, because now I reporting this bug 
with an Ubuntu Lucid operating system with a chrooted Debian live file system, 
because only this way possible using the screen reader with software speech.
When I looked with Squeeze in 2009. year, this sound card are proper working.

This sound card is perfect supported with all Ubuntu versions and Debian Lenny.

If I reported this bug with wrong package, excuse me.
I tested this sound card working for example with Linux Mint Debian 
distribution with based Debian Squeeze, this sound card is not working properly.
For example my desktop PC have a Creative Audigy LS sound card, this sound card 
is proper supported.

   usually the documentation generated with python-sphinx add a few javascript
   files to the documentation. Thoses files are usefull for the search engine of
   the documentation. The problem is that thoses files are most of the time 
bigger
   than 4k and thus are compressed by the dh_compress utility. This compression
   is a problem, because, the html file refering thoses javascript files use the
   non compressed name.

   As more and more python package are using sphinx for there documentation, it
   would be nice to avoid overriding the dh_compress command for all those 
packages.
   So adding an exception for the .js files in the documentation directory 
would be nice.

From the PyMca side, the problem seems to be solved.

By default, PyMca uses the solutions described in previous mail.

On linux systems using glibc, the end user or package maintainer, can 
choose a much cleaner solution based on the use of the strtod_l 
function. That function is only available when the _GNU_SOURCE compiler 
flag is defined.


I have foreseen a simple way to enable that possibility using setup.py:

SPECFILE_USE_GNU_SOURCE=1 python setup.py

I just did a fresh install of Squeeze (using the Beta1 d-i, amd64).  I
encountered this bug using 2.6.32-27, although the bug was allegedly
fixed in 2.6.32-25.

My machine has exactly 4 GB of RAM and an AMD 64 X2 5200+ CPU.

tightened unblock policy. So if you want to have this fixed in Squeeze,

I have xpdf and evice installed, and the following snippet in
/etc/mozpluggerrc:

opened with evince in an independent window.

No, it won't.  Just do the following:

This should prevent any unwanted upgrades from experimental and still
allow you to hand-pick kernels from there.  The installation updates one
additional package that should not hurt you.  Other than that running a
squeeze with .36 should be fine.

Thank you for this bug report. I'm a little bit confused with the
severity. I can not find a Debian Policy exception where the Debconf
question/answer stage can not end in an endless loop. Only if such a
restriction exists within the Debian Policy the severity serious
should be set.

You can not install bugzilla without a valid configuration. At least
MySQL have to run and you need to know the admin account. I got tons
of error reports where people did not answer the Debconf question as
requested. The user can break the question/answer loop at any time but
know that the setup fail.

I put in consideration to detect piuparts and disable the setup of
bugzilla. The idea behind piuparts is only to check the low-level
installation/de-installation but not if bugzilla is working. I've
changed the severity to minor because it's only a issue with piuparts
but not for real life situations.

Well, it's not a state change tested by piuparts, so you don't see any
errors or similar things (unless dpkg throws some).

Just imagine a package foobar which does the following in its preinst:

   dpkg-divert --add --rename --divert-to /usr/bin/foo /usr/bin/bar

but does not clean this up in postrm. Or does clean it up incorrectly:

   dpkg-divert --remove --rename --divert-to /usr/bin/fuu /usr/bin/bar

If there was no /usr/bin/bar in the test environment, after purge no
(file) changes are left in the system - besides an entry in the
diversion database (IIRC, this file is ignored by piuparts because the
order of the entries might change). This system configuration change is
not detected by piuparts.

I needed this test for fixing all the diversion handling in the
nvidia-graphics-drivers* packages which was very messy. I used
snapshot.d.o to test upgrading from all old packages releases back to
some time even before lenny - every package left some (other) diversions
on the system that needed proper cleanup now for squeeze. piuparts did
not detect this until I introduced my hooks.

Another possible case: package bbb removes/takes over a diversion owned
by package aaa, the diversion will be gone after install-and-purge bbb
without a change detected by piuparts. (Unless a file change involving
the diverted file is detected - but if no package has this file, nothing
will be noticed.)

Inflating bugs to try to bend the rules is not good.

If the fix for this bug is trivial and you have a severe bug to fix anyway, 
I'm quite sure the release team would accept it if you'd use the opportunity 
to fix this bug too, else fix it later.

piuparts.d.o detected 48 packages in sid with this kind of problem, and I dont 
even let it do this test in squeeze, cause for squeeze I rather want to 
concentrate on the more severe issues. Because, if a package fails due to 
*any* piuparts issue, piuparts will not test packages which depend on it (ie 
in sid no packages depending on jack1 or jack2 will be tested, as jack1+2 
have failed tests). 

(So please fix this in sid ASAP (which can/could be after the release...) so 
more packages in sid get tested and severe problems are found, before they 
enter squeeze/wheezy.)

And so, while this is a clear policy violation, it's also not such a severe 
policy violation that we must fix it immediatly. 
http://piuparts.debian.org/sid/ shows too many anyway! /squeeze/ looks much 
better though.

I'm very far from being an expert on Debian but this suggests to me that 
there may indeed be some changes to be done in the LyX package (in the 
source code of tex2lyx), possibly including versions >=1.6.7

First of all, the use of non-embedded libraries is not mandatory.
Many programs have similar problems and we have to coexists with
them, unfortunately. If a patch can be provided (upstream or not)
to fix system-wide issues and is not, it is unfortunate, but it 
happens.

That said, the AGG case is quite unfortunate, because AGG 2.5
is GPL2 and AGG 2.4 is MIT licensed. That implies that the 
whole mapnik should be considered GPL-2 released and that
should be noted. This is also something bad, because it
violates the original upstream will IMHO. Note also that
the embedded copy is a 2.3 or 2.4 version, and we used
the same approach for mapserver to avoid those kind
of problems. 

Seriously someone should consider an AGG fork from 2.4
which is something maybe mapserver folks already did.

My best guessing is moving to the embedded copy 
if resulting issues are grave enough to compromise
its use. 

Maybe David can help about that.

apache and

Here is the logcheck notification that lead me to think mod_facl is

piuparts.py: remove_or_purge()

versioned depends can't work if a leftover *new* ure is the problem.
except depends ure (<< 1.7) at openoffice.org, which, umm, is bad.

Well, as long as a *upgrade* works.. Downgrades are not supported :)
(But partial upgrades are, but then again ure is not really the subject which

But yes, there's a bug here, either because LibO broke compatibility or
as there's a Conficts/Breaks missing.

I cannot see how you come to this conclusion. Let's look for instance at
powerbtn-acpi-support.sh. It calls CheckPolicy to decide whether or not it is
supposed to start any action. CheckPolicy in return checks to see if any GUI
power manager is running, e.g. /usr/bin/gnome-power-manager or
/usr/bin/guidance-power-manager, but not gdm. AFAICT these power managers are
only started if someone is logged in.

Could you please explain?

after a quick chat on IRC: squeeze won't be useful in openmoko systems
without at least some bits from sid and experimental.

Therefore it does not make sense to put effort in fixing this in time
for squeeze, and we can just remove mokomaze from testing and give
upstream all the time they need to work on it.

It's not unquely for LibreOffice. It's a newer version of it.
and ure is the "UNO runtime environment", used by both OOo and LibO
(a base library that everything uses - compare it like glibc for Linux)

Besides that, no, it's not my or the OOo packages' fault if you didn't keep 
your sid clean after installing LibreOffice. (but probably a bug in
LibreOffice/the LibreOffice packages)

Unsurpinsingly then also fails for the other packages doing registration
using regcomp after installation (-evolution for example).

I tested install on my work PC wiich did have ure but as It prevented to
run openoffice (missing dll or wrong version) I also removed it. Worked
fine there. But is a 32 bits machine and not a 64 bits.


I probably let ttf-opensymbol from experimental. Can downgrade also when 
I'm home. Would be rather curious if it changes anything.

By definition, the specfile format is locale C based as it is the format 
and locale used by SPEC.

For actual data, the best alternative file format recognized by PyMca is 
HDF5.


For the theoretical data used by PyMca, I still consider specfile is a 
good choice because:


- the end users can simply use "vi" and change the theoretical constants 
used by the program

- they can easily access the data them using other tools

This opinion can evolve as the synchrotron users get more and more 
confident on HDF5 and get used to edit HDF5 files with the appropriate 
tools.

The problem is Debian will release sometime soon (at least I hope so) a
new stable release where the issue seems to be resolved and the LyX project
is also working on a new major release 2.0 where I hope (haven't tested it
and I've no time to do so currently) that this issue is solved aswell.
I appreciate that you've brought that issue to our attention so that we can
assure it's solved in future releases. I hope you can understand that the
incentive to dig now for the root cause of this problem is very sparse.

The mod_facl is not active by default. It would help having a look 
to your complete configuration. That said, I see no evidence of 
proftpd being a possible guilty by your report.

Hello,

thank you for maintaining pidgin.

If I open the log window to look, say, for what a customer told me
yesterday, the log window stays on top of the conversation window,
making it rather awkward for me, for example, to tell the customer that
I'm looking into the issue.

I can think of absolutely no reason whatsoever for the log window to
always stay on top. I wish I could be able to work with the pidgin log
window open as a reference without it disrupting everything else.

A little part of me dies every time I'm facing this. I've been suffering
of this for years, but every time it made me so sad and depressed that I
couldn't collect the strength to report a bug. Maybe I should thank
today's wonderfully sunny weather, I'm glad I finally made it.

No, it won't.  Just do the following:

# cat>>  /etc/apt/preferences<<  EOF

Pin: release o=Debian,a=experimental

# apt-get update

This should prevent any unwanted upgrades from experimental and still
allow you to hand-pick kernels from there.  The installation updates one
additional package that should not hurt you.  Other than that running a
squeeze with .36 should be fine.

When receving an unencrypted message from a contact with which I had an
open OTR conversation before, pidgin does not notify me of the new
message.

Here is the scenario that I'm going through at least once every 3 days
and drives me completely mad:

 1. I begin the morning with an encrypted OTR conversation with an
important person;
 2. The important person goes to work, where she doesn't have OTR;
 3. The important person sends me important messages from work;
 4. The important person phones me very angry because I'm not replying
to her messages;
 5. I look into pidgin's conversation window and I find something like
this:
(14:25:32) The following message received from import...@gmail.com was not 
encrypted: [how's the situation today?]
(15:12:34) The following message received from import...@gmail.com was not 
encrypted: [ping?]
(15:34:56) The following message received from import...@gmail.com was not 
encrypted: [you seem to be online, why are you not replying to me?]
(15:45:54) The following message received from import...@gmail.com was not 
encrypted: [ehi?]
(15:54:45) The following message received from import...@gmail.com was not

I'm fine in having to read messages inside verbose error messages in
this kind of situation, but pidgin should at the very least notify me
that a message has arrived.

Ah, thanks for the explanation.

I agree this should be addressed and would enable the option for sid testing 
on piuparts.debian.org. (But I wont work on this feature in the near future, 
the BTS and trunk/TODO has lots of other stuff...)

But I'd happily take a patch to make this a runtime option to run this test. 
Best if the patch also includes the diff for the manpage and changelog 
entry :-)

Well, as changing the logo license seems not to be an option, the only
remaining ones are:
* to ignore this RC bug, shipping non-free or license-violating files
  with Debian, these files being Debian official desktop themes;
* to fix this bug, stripping the problematic part of these files.

these images, available at

I'd tested on lenny with squeeze in a dchroot. asterisk in a dchroot 
from squeeze with chan_mobile worked perfektly. on a native squeeze 
installation chan_mobile didn't work anymore. some test later i decided 
to get this version

and started r...@squeeze:~/test/bluez-4.79/src# ./bluetoothd -nd. two 
seconds later asterisk was connected with my mobile phone. so i think

with the bluetooth stack on lenny it works perfectly too.

FWIW, this bug still affects 2.6.32-27, and renders the system
completely unusable.
I've had to stick with 2.6.32-9 so far.

Hi,

Given that:
  - gdm3 is now in a working state for Debian GNU/kFreeBSD
  - gdm isn't
  - gdm3 is now the default
  - gdm is an older version which will eventually be obsoleted
  - there's a reasonable/justified lack of interest in debugging it

I'd recommend removing kfreebsd-{i386,amd64} gdm binaries
from testing and then forgetting about this problem.

I confirm the problem on squeeze, too.

6.17.02 was a development release. At the time, it sounded like a good
idea to package it in Debian, because it was fixing several Debian bugs,
and was supposed to be followed by a final release soon. But the final
release didn't happen, and apparently, some interesting bugs like this
one crept in.

I won't work on this bug (tcsh is orphaned, and I'm too busy currently).
When someone attacks it, I'd recommend also looking at the other
Debian+Ubuntu bug reports for tcsh: I think I remember seeing other
nasty bugs affecting that version. Also, the git repository is a good
start to see what changed between 6.17.00 and 6.17.02.

Note that dann no longer works for HP, which probably makes it quite
hard for him to do IA64 testing.

Since you apparently still haven't tested Linux 2.6.35, we're waiting
for you to do that.  Actually, make that 2.6.36 now.

This option will allow PowerTOP to collect runtime power management statistics.

Bug#600575: bug 600575 black screen after suspend/resume when lock screen enabled

Installing a newer pm-utils from experimental appears to solve (or mask) 
the problem.


Incidentally, I notice there is now a greater pause between the 
fade-to-black and the computer going into suspend mode, during which the 
display becomes visible again and the screensaver is seen momentarily.

ok so it was just a problem of the spefile module using atof or similar methods.

Yes this file hdf5 format is nice. But I agree that editing this by hand is a 
problem.
Did you looked ad yaml or json file format for there human editable/readable 
quality ?
