What is the problem in having pure metapackages?

Bug#587373: [Build-common-hackers] Bug#587373: cdbs: python-distutils.mk: Installs scripts with a versioned shebang

Hi, as part of the Python 2.6 transition, I've been digging through the

they install scripts with a shebang of the form:

dh works around this by building with the versioned python interpretors
first, and then the default /usr/bin/python
http://git.debian.org/?p=debhelper/debhelper.git;a=blob;f=Debian/Debhelper/Buildsystem/python_distutils.pm#l111

However distutils provides a way to force a particular shebang:
--executable

Interesting!

Would you happen to know if that option is new or we can safely use this
also for e.g. backports?

Would it perhaps be better to always pass this option, also for specific
versions of Python?

Kind regards,

Do a full package build with 'pkg-buildpackage -B'.

Wow. Thanks. Also it seems:-

By the Way: 570350 is archived and can't be updated - should it be

Bug#587172: github-cli: fails to list issues -- asks for authorization

Do you have a [github] section, with user and token, in your ~/.gitconfig ?

In any case, it should show you:

  $ ghi -r yarikoptic/svgtune | cat
  # open issues on yarikoptic/svgtune
error: required GitHub entry 'user' not found in global git config
please add it to the global git config by doing this:

  git config --global github.user

Otherwise, let's try to debug it. Add the following line:

  print repr(url), repr(data), repr(headers)

at /usr/share/pyshared/github/utils.py , before line 26 ("try:"). Be sure to
put four spaces before it. Then run again that command, it should show
something like:

'login=&token=' {'User-Agent': 'github-cli'}

/ should be what you passed on the command line; and
should be the ones you have in your ~/.gitconfig. Remember not to post
your token here (since that would allow anyone to do commits authenticated as
you)!

Kindly,
David

For some reason it doesn't, and all other applications I tried do not
have this problem. All of them where GTK, but I can try with some QT
apps as well, as soon as I have access to that machine (latest
tomorrow).

Could there be some timeouts involved? The cups "server" is on a low-end
(PII-333) lan machine and GTK apps do take a while (20-30 secs?) to get
the printer informations. What can I do to investigate why
OpenOffice.org is not communicating with cups?

A fall-back value makes sense to me, but shouldn't it rather be
/etc/openoffice/psprint.conf (where I uncommented PPD_PageSize=A4)?

Andrei

The reality is that a lot of pages are written with IE specific stuff
that are not part of existing standards, or even worse, written for IE
specific bugs or disrespect of the standard. There are even cases where
some stupid User Agent sniffing returns an even more broken page if you're
not using some browser.

That being said, your pages work just fine on iceweasel here, so
iceweasel is apparently not at fault here. Again, please make sure
everything is fine at the networking level. Ask your network
administrator if necessary.

To my knowledge that .PS files is not used unless you selected "Generic Printer"

Bug#587287: mkfs.ocfs2 depends on libdlm-dev

2010-06-28 Thread Jeremy Lainé

It looks as though there are two issues here:

a/ My understanding is that upstream does a dlopen() on libdlm_lt.so in
order to be able to use libdlm_lt.so.2 or libdlm_lt.so.3 depending on
the system. On Debian/squeeze or better, the package in use is libdlm3,
so libo2dlm should dlopen() libdlm_lt.so.3 directly instead of
libdlm_lt.so, so that we only need the libdlm3 package, not libdlm3-dev.
I have added a patch for the next upload of ocfs2-tools which does just
that:

http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/collab-maint/deb-maint/ocfs2-tools/trunk/debian/patches/libo2dlm-dlopen-libdlm_lt.patch

b/ libdlm3 is only required when using a userspace cluster stack instead
of the built-in o2cb. Therefore, having a ocfs2-tools *depend* on
libdlm3 is probably wrong. I think that making ocfs2-tools-cman and
ocfs2-tools-pacemaker depend on libdlm3 is probably the way to go. Any
thoughts on this Joel?

Bug#587388: d-i: fails to install grub-2

2010-06-28 Thread Chris Bell
Subject: d-i: fails to install grub-2
Package: d-i
Version: debian-504-i386-businesscard.iso
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Installer used on 27/06/2010 to install squeeze, which failed to install
grub-2, then failed to revert to grub-legacy, so I used dd to copy
/dev/zero to the disc and started again, attempting to install
grub-legacy. The installer informed me that it was doing an automatic
update to grub-2, which failed. The syslog showed
Jun 28 05:49:48 grub-installer: Unrecognized option `-y'
Jun 28 05:49:48 grub-installer: error: Running 'update-grub -y' failed.

Full logs available if required.

Thanks, I prepared the debian package in git [1], Marc can you please
review it ? Especially I need your opinion regarding install substr &
stratall modules in dicod package, instead of creating separate packages
for them.

In my opinion they defininitely *do not* qualify for separate packages,
just as the rest of modules for dicod. They are part of the server and
should be distributed with it,

that's strange. what does 'fsck.ext3 /dev/mapper/backcrypt' return?

what is KISS? in my eyes it's better to use crypttab, as you can set
cipher, hash and key size as well as other options there, and the
cryptdisks initscript will unlock the device automatically at boot.

but in the end, it's your decision.

which cryptsetup version did you use before the upgrade? take a look at
/var/log/dpkg.log if you're unsure. did you already try to downgrade to
the old cryptsetup version and see, whether it works again?

ah, and i was wrong with the changed defaults. the only change to plain
dm-crypt was the cipher change from aes-cbc-plain to
aes-cbc-essiv:sha256. so you should try this one instead:

# cryptsetup -c aes-cbc-plain create backcrypt /dev/sdc2

it's strange indeed. maybe your ext3 filesystem is damaged for some
reason?

The packages of the other modules do depend on the dicod package. But I
separated them, as it may occur that a user may not want to install them
(especially that some of them pulls some dependencies).

I fixed this bug over a year ago in the squeeze installer; see the
changelog for grub-installer 1.38, uploaded on 12 June 2009. Are you
attempting to use a lenny installer to install squeeze? This won't work
well.

Does it? I've sent 7 translated strings, and the stats says there are 7
strings in total. Should I update more untranslated strings from somewhere?

Sorry, false information: The upgrade disabled Kolab for the Kalendar. After I
reenabled it, the error comes back.
Setting $conf[calendar][driver] to SQL will make the error messages vanish
again. ($conf[storage][driver] does not seem to affect this)

This is an Amavisd+Spamassasin dedicated spamfilter host.
Actually I don't know if amavisd-new or spamassasin or fuzzyocr was
who forgot to sanitize input data.

The problem is that I really do not see way how to detect whether you
are installing source package at time when command line options are
processed. However I do not know rpm code so good, so maybe there is
way. Patches welcome :-).

Well it did build but the binary package was broken anyway ... probably

I noticed the build failure just after upload, but I did not have time
to investigate it immediately. Hopefully I know have fix, just testing
it.

As stated, I was using the 5.04 businesscard ISO which I thought
downloaded the correct installer components. I will try the weekly image
unless you recommend the daily image. Please close the bug report.

Bug#587393: Imagemagick should use libtool in order to create a public/private abi

2010-06-28 Thread Bastien ROUCARIES
package: src:imagemagick
severity: grave

Upstream break a lot the ABI removing or changing the definition of the symbols

In order to improve the situation they should define a proper private
public abi.

Libtool could help here:

The best answer in this case is to make use of its feature to hide all
symbols unless explicitly listed
as public. (The symbols are still usable from within the library
itself. It'll get tricky if some symbols ought to be available to
coders in a
modular build, but not to applications, though.) To make use of the
feature, one needs to create a symbols file like magick-public.sym or
wand-public.sym, listing public symbols one at a line. It is passed to
libtool via LDFLAGS using option -export-symbols, eg.

libwand_la_LDFLAGS = (...) -export-symbols wand-public.sym

The symbols file needs to be updated as API functions are added and
removed.

Bug#575251: Moving debian-fi to lists.debian.org

2010-06-28 Thread Lars Wirzenius
I think this would be a good thing to do.

I also concur that the topic of the list would be expanded from "user
support in Finnish" to "all things related to Debian, in Finnish", and
thus the name debian-finnish would seem to me to be better than
debian-user-finnish.

I'm fine with anything, though.

Can you try again with version 3.6.0-3 of the fuzzyocr package?

The last two versions fixed a number of untaint-related issues, so you might
find your problem resolved in that version.

Cheers,

Bug#587394: plasma-widgets-addons: fileWatcher is very slow with medium sized files

2010-06-28 Thread Johannes Willkomm
Package: plasma-widgets-addons
Version: 4:4.4.4-1
Severity: important

I put a fileWatcher Widget on my desktop showing the syslog. Now it happened
that
the syslog was about 30MB in size one day. Then logging in to KDE takes a lot
of time

First the splash screen hangs for about 30 seconds, then it goes to the desktop
but it takes
another minute or so until the control bar finally appears.

I changed the file to display in fileWatcher and the problem goes away.

It should not really be so expensive to get the last 5-10 lines of a 30 MB
syslog.

Best regards
Johannes

Bug#587395: [redis-server] Please install redis-benchmark and redis-stat

2010-06-28 Thread Riccardo Magliocchetti

Package: redis-server
Version: 2:1.2.6-1
Severity: wishlist

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hello,

is it possible to ship redis-benchmark in redis-server? Then i see that
from 1.2.6 a simplified version of redis-stat from redis-tools is
available. Since redis-tools is not available in debian would you mind
adding that too?

thanks,
riccardo

Bug#587396: Remove mysql-server-5.0 from the Suggests

2010-06-28 Thread Lorenzo De Liso
Package: knowledgeroot
Version: 0.9.9.5-3
Severity: normal

Justification: Policy 9.3.2
User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com
Usertags: origin-ubuntu maverick ubuntu-patch

In ubuntu we removed mysql-server-5.0 from Suggests.
Debian has the same problem as mysql-server is 5.1, and this dependence will
install mysql-server-5.0 instead.
Maybe you could fix this problem in debian as well.

I attached a patch, please see.

Bug#587397: windows detected by installer, but not listed by grub after reboot

2010-06-28 Thread Grant Allan
Package: installation-reports
Boot method: netinst
Image version:
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/squeeze_di_alpha1/amd64/iso-cd/debian-testing-amd64-netinst.iso
Date: 27 June
Machine: -
Processor: Inteli5 750
Memory: 4Gb
Partitions:
  sd0 has "system reserved" (NTFS 100Mb), 244Gb NTFS, 220Gb NTFS, 1.7Gb FAT
sd1 was all "free space" before installation; during install, i made
half of it into unformatted space, located at the end, and i chose
automatic guided partitioning for the first half

Comments/Problems:
During the install, I got a disturbing message about unlabelled
partitions and the possibility of my system becoming unbootable. I
went forward one step, expecting to get an opportunity to choose
labels to fix the problem. Instead I got an error message about some
/etc something-or-other being mentioned in some file. I thought "ok,
i'm outta here" and started using the "back" button. Strange but
true, the "back" button took me to screens I had never seen before. A
little voice in my head started repeating "What the?" over and over.
At this point, the room began spinning and I began fading in and out
of consciousness. When I came to, I was looking at a screen that said
that Vista had been detected, and I would be OK to reboot now if that
was the only other OS that I had on the computer. I thought "phew,
that was close" and chose to continue with the reboot. However, after
reboot, there was no windows at all listed by grub.

As Vincent pointed out in his reply [1] – I did not get being not
subscribed to the report –, it is Times that is missing and not Times
New Roman. Helvetica is still missing.

I checked again and current GIMP (2.6.8-3) does not display the missing
fonts either anymore.

So it looks like it is a problem with some font system. I compared gimp
and openoffice.org-core and they both depend on libfreetype6.

I could not find out what package installs the fonts Times and Helvetica
`xlsfonts` lists. Searching the Web I could not find it either. Could
anyone help, please?

Package: chromium-browser
Version: 5.0.375.86~r49890-3
Severity: normal

http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=47716

Chrome Version: Chromium5.0.375.86 (Developer Build 49890) Built on
Debian unstable, running on Debian squeeze/sid

Is this the most recent version: it's the one available on debian unstable
OS + version: debian unstable
CPU architecture 64-bit:
Window manager: kwin

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. open chromium
2. login with ssh -X from another machine
3. open chromium from the other machine as well

I want a chromium window being forwarded over ssh, but what i get is a new tab
in the already running one.
It should be aware of the different value of DISPLAY and behave accordingly.

2010-06-28 Thread Matthew Vernon

Hi,

we didn't talk about #359946 for some years. ;-)

I never really did get it to work, so I went to using lilypond instead :(

Can you add some more input or is the problem gone?

Well, I am sad enough that I'd still like to debug this, so :)

I installed texlive-music, and copied the musixtex code from the bug
report. Here is the .tex, and the output:

\documentclass[11pt,a4paper]{article}

\usepackage{charter,fullpage,musixtex}

Let's have a paragraph before the music

Bug#578578: sun-java6: crypto policy configuration files violate Debian policy

2010-06-28 Thread Markus Hochholdinger
Hello,

I've now testet:
  sudo
dpkg-divert --rename
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/lib/security/local_policy.jar
  sudo
dpkg-divert --rename
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/lib/security/US_export_policy.jar
out of the README.Debian (6.20-dlj-4), but I tested this for Debian 5.0.4, so
I had to use:

dpkg-divert --rename
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.12/jre/lib/security/local_policy.jar

dpkg-divert --rename
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.12/jre/lib/security/US_export_policy.jar

After aptitude safe-upgrade the directory /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.12
vanished and in /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.20/jre/lib/security/ the files
from the debian package were used. My changed files "local_policy.jar"
and "US_export_policy.jar" were deleted!

So I assume this "workaround" doesn't work if the version of java (like here
1.6.0.12 to 1.6.0.20) changes.

(It's very dangerous because you notice the change only after the java vm is
restartet. This can happen long after the upgrade of java, so the java
developers will be puzzled what's suddenly wrong!)

Isn't it possible to put these two files in /etc/java-6-sun/security/ , like
the file cacerts, and symlink? With this I'll be asked if I want to overwrite
my changes or not, with cacerts this works very well!

Apropos configuration files in /etc, the file /etc/java-6-sun/security/cacerts
doesn't seem to look well in vi, so i suppose local_policy.jar and
US_export_policy.jar could be also there. Upstream - cacerts,
local_policy.jar and US_export_policy.jar ARE in the same dirctory
(lib/security/)!

The semantics of the three number in a .so file is not what you have in
mind. They express ABI/API compatibility (between two releases of the
same library, not w.r.t. another library or an interpreter that may load
them). A good source of info is the libtool manual.

The initscript makes sure the module is included before starting acpi_fakekeyd,
so the device should be there. Strange.

Eh? Does that mean it only doesn't start in the boot process but works
correctly if run later on? Could you go into /etc/init.d/acpi-fakekey and add a
"sleep 5" after the modprobe and before the "start-stop-daemon --start --quiet
--oknodo --exec /usr/sbin/acpi_fakekeyd" and retry?

> But still does not control alsamixer like it did before.

This seems to be a different problem. Which hardware do you have? What keycodes
are produced? Please note that acpi-support only translates key events and you
might still need some other software like a mixer to react on these.

This setting doesn't change anything for me but in fluxbox it works as
expected. Mind to test this with openbox as well in case this is related to my
openbox configuration?

Still confused what changed as only fbpanel was updated. You've got an

Bug#565709: oss4-base: fixed the bug

2010-06-28 Thread koala
Package: oss4-base
Version: 4.2-build2002-3
Severity: normal

Hi, I finally had the time to correct the bug

I modified the soundon and soundoff scripts from the 4front .deb installer to
work with the debian installation of oss4.
I had to modify the /etc/oss.conf file (see attachment) in order to include the
/var/dkms for my soundon modified script.

One problem though, you need the ossvermagic program from the 4front .deb in
order for the scripts to work (I don't know if we can find a workaround for
this, but I think including this program in the official oss4-base debian
package would not be too difficult).

This application is a progress showing application for goto/FAI/... taking up
a very prominent name in the "generic KDE namespace".

I discussed it with Benoit and we agreed that it should not have been
introduced as kprogress, but instead as a goto-fai-qprogress or a more saying
name what the package is actually about.

It is a simple progress bar displaying progress in a undocumented format, but
outputted by some of the goto/FAI tools.

KDE might or might not introduce a more generic progress bar application,
should kdialog --progressbar not suffice. So let us resolve the possible
conflicts as early as possible.

At the same time, it should also be updated to not use Qt3 libraries. A patch
has been sent for that.

Bug#587401: antlr3: FTBFS everwhere; build-deps need adjusting?

Hi,

antlr3 3.2-2 failed to build everywhere again; I guess most of the
build-deps in Build-Depends-Indep need to be promoted to Build-Depends
to build antlr3-gcj.

I'd suggest a binary-arch-only build in pbuilder or similar before the
next upload so we don't have to go through this again :)

Thanks!

In theory you could support a list of keyrings in your trusted proposals
(which is fine for me btw) or as far as i know the recommend line currently is
to use the codename of the release instead of 'stable' so (maybe automatic)
actions like "apt-get upgrade" can not end in a "lenn-eze"…

The problem with /usr/lib/apt is that a file you delete or change will
appear unchanged again with the next upgrade of the package.
Something which seems to be disliked (in this bugreport). ;)
Binary file isn't my favorite either, but beside that gpgv doesn't
support ascii-amored files it wouldn't change much anyway:
I (and many others too) can't read ascii-armored keys…
And if it really boils down to a "file exists or not" it is the same.

/etc also as it is a user decision which keyrings he might want to trust
(or not) and that doesn't always boils down to a complete keyring package.

Best regards,

David Kalnischkies

I've done a successful cowbuilder ... -B build before uploading. I'll
check it again later but feel free to attach a patch.

Bug#587132: bustle: FTBFS: Could not find module `Graphics.UI.Gtk.Pango.Font':

2010-06-28 Thread Chris Lamb
tags 587132 + upstream
thanks

Hi Will,

Looks like libghc6-pango-dev doesn't provide Graphics.UI.Gtk.Pango.Font,
it's renamed to Graphics.Rendering.Pango.Layout.

However, simply adjusting the import lines (and adding pango to cabal
Build-Depends) doesn't work:

 * Bustle.hs:237:14:
Ambiguous occurrence `eventKeyName'
It could refer to either `Graphics.UI.Gtk.eventKeyName', imported
   from Graphics.UI.Gtk at Bustle.hs:45:0-21 or
   `Graphics.UI.Gtk.Gdk.Events.eventKeyName', imported from
   Graphics.UI.Gtk.Gdk.Events at Bustle.hs:47:0-32

 * Also, I get a ton of deprecation warnings and suchlike.

Fancy refreshing the package a little for GHC 6.12 and doing another
release? :)

Bug#587404: aptitude: keeps running forever on nonassisted script

2010-06-28 Thread Daniel Franganillo
Subject: aptitude: keeps running forever on nonassisted script
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.6.1.5-3
Severity: normal

Hi,
at work we have quite a few debian stable servers updated daily with
this script via cron jobs:

#!/bin/bash

aptitude update >& /dev/null

TMP_FILE="/tmp/remote-update.txt"

echo "From: r...@server" > $TMP_FILE
echo "To: remotead...@server" >> $TMP_FILE
echo "Subject: $(date +%e/%m/%y) $(eval hostname) status" >> $TMP_FILE
echo >> $TMP_FILE
yes n | LC_ALL=C aptitude -s safe-upgrade | grep -A20 "upgraded.*" |
grep -v "continue" >> $TMP_FILE
echo >> $TMP_FILE

sendmail remotead...@server < $TMP_FILE

rm -f $TMP_FILE

yes Y | aptitude -d safe-upgrade >& /dev/null

Its not a pretty solution but it has worked for years up until now.
We're testing some servers with the next stable (that is squeeze) and
had pointed their sources.list to squeeze
Since then the servers showed a strange behaviour during updates with
the prior script.
The line:
yes Y | aptitude -d safe-upgrade >& /dev/null

sometimes keeps running forever, so we have to kill the process, and
other times ends as expected.
The packages are being downloaded right so we dont know whats exactly doing.
Thanks.

I know backports aren't officially supported, but the 8.3.7 versions

Is this likely to change, or should I go down the roll-my-own path?

Bug#586243: education-desktop-sugar: please remove this package, it's outdated and confuses users

2010-06-28 Thread Sascha Silbe
Excerpts from Andreas Tille's message of Mon Jun 28 09:20:04 +0200 2010:
> > education-desktop-sugar is a pure meta package, so removing it shouldn't
> > affect usage of Sugar with thin clients.
> What is the problem in having pure metapackages?

The problem with this package is that it misleads users into installing
it and turning their system into something that works differently (LTSP)
from what they expect (a regular desktop). See the original bug
description:

=== Begin ===
Please remove education-desktop-sugar from sid/squeeze. It depends on
obsolete package names and confuses users.
The description suggests this is what to install to get a complete Sugar
installation on a desktop, whereas it will actually install the Debian
Edu suite (+ Sugar). One user even reported it "will hose your boot" (the
system hung part-way through the boot process - unfortunately no more
details are available as he was in a hurry and overwrote the installation
with Fedora afterwards in order to get a working Sugar installation).
=== End ===

If someone cares about this package enough to maintain it, changing the
description (to point out that it's LTSP + Sugar, not Sugar on a desktop)
and updating the dependencies should be enough. But without an active
maintainer removing the package is the best option and should be done
ASAP.

Sascha

Uhm, I come with bad news. I've played a bit with it and it does not
work, whereas it worked with the past schroot by changing the used
fstab. The symptom is that I got an empty /var/run/gdm3/ and I haven't
yet understood why. The /var/run fstab entry is there, the gdm3
directory in it is there, but it's empty for some reason. Also the other
stuff which is in /var/run is not quite the same that I've in the real
machine.

It seems that either some bogus dir is mounted in place of /var/run or
that it gets overwritten (i.e. overmounted) later on by some other
setup/exec script. I've tried with both simply changing the default
mount symlink to the desktop profile and later on by switching all the
default symlinks to their desktop equivalent.

Unfortunately I don't have time right now to debug it any further, but I
presume it's easy to reproduce. If not, I'll be more relax to have a
look at this next week, not earlier I fear.

In the meantime I believe this bug should be reopened, but I leave that
up to you.

Another suggestion: please mention the addition of profile support in
README or README.Debian and maybe even in NEWS.Debian. IMHO it is quite
important and it took me a while before finding out that it was
documented in the schroot.conf(5) manpage.

Many thanks for your work, it's a pleasure to work with such a reactive
maintainer :-)

Cheers.

Package: mumble
Version: 1.2.2-2

Mumble eventually loses the connection to the microphone, i. e,
there's eventually no input from the microphone anymore after some
time. Quitting mumble closes the window but leaves a mumble process
running which then needs to be killed with kill (or Ctrl-C). On
restarting mumble, the microphone input doesn't come back, it seems to
require a reboot to solve the problem. I'm using alsa.

This do not sound right. There is nothing related ot LTSP in the
education-desktop-sugar meta package.

It isn't LTSP + Sugar. Where did you get that idea? The task is for
Sugar on a Debian Edu desktop. The problem is that there are very few
sugar packages in Debian (both testing and unstable). If the package
lists in education-desktop-sugar is wrong, please provide information
on exactly what is wrong.

This is the current task content. What is wrong with it?

Cool - this is what I'd done on my dev pair of boxes. I was just

Interestingly enough, using the package default (i.e. not a single
default from the "desktop" profile), and adding one of {/var/run,
/var/run/gdm3} to the default fstab works.

So I presume the bug can be narrowed down by looking at the differences
between the desktop default and the package defaults, something is wrong
there.

Hope this helps,
Cheers.

Then you're almost certainly running into #550704, which has bitten a
lot of people in testing. Unfortunately other problems have made it
difficult to get a version of grub2 that fixes this into testing in a
timely manner. In the meantime, I suggest upgrading to grub-common and
grub-pc from unstable.
