This should be handled in another thread. Sorry, I mixed up two issues again. Could you please rename this one to 'vnc is broken' or something? The permission issues have a connection to #575824. Bug#582038: qa.debian.org: [PTS] Please link to UbuntuDiff
On Mon, May 17, 2010 at 10:40:27PM +0200, Mehdi Dogguy wrote: > Could you please add a link to UbuntuDiff in the Ubuntu box in the > PTS? Not this way. The guideline for links in the PTS is that they are there only if, upon click, they lead to some information. The patch you propose on the contrary adds a link no matter what. What we need is instead an index of all packages currently having some information on ubuntudiff to show; that index should be downloaded daily and information about which packages have some data to show internalized in the PTS. Then, at page generation time, we will output the link only if there is some information to show. That patter is common to several parts of the PTS, if you look around in the code I'm confident you'll find out how to improve your patch along these lines. Cheers. PS as we already have some ubuntu information in the PTS, I'm copying Lucas which IIRC contributed that other information: can you please you two check that there is no overlapping in having both links? -- Stefano Zacchiroli -o- PhD in Computer Science \ PostDoc @ Univ. Bug#582078: mc: postin runs dpkg-architecture from dpkg-dev but not depend on dpkg-dev

Bug#581268: libdata-visitor-perl: move away from libdata-alias-perl

Therefore I think this solution is acceptable and even preferred. I've glanced through the six reverse dependencies of libdata-visitor-perl, and I don't see any indication that the undocumented weak reference support in Data::Visitor is needed. > > B2. split Data::Alias::deref() out into a new package and make > > libdata-visitor-perl use that. As a proof of concept, I've put together a Data-Visitor-Crippled distribution, available at http://people.debian.org/~ntyni/perl/Data-Alias-Crippled-1.0701.tar.gz but I'm not really enthusiastic about taking this path any further. I propose we demote libdata-alias-perl to Recommends: or even Suggests: for now. See /usr/share/GNUstep/Documentation/Developer/Make/ReleaseNotes/RELEASENOTES for more information. In almost all cases this is easy to fix; if you were doing something like: ifneq (,$(findstring noopt,$(DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS))) OPTFLAG := -O0 else OPTFLAG := -O2 endif build-stamp: ... $(MAKE) OPTFLAG=$(OPTFLAG) ... , then replacing it with ifneq (,$(findstring noopt,$(DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS))) optim := debug=yes endif build-stamp: ... $(MAKE) $(optim) ... should be sufficient. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#582083: grep --color should imply --color=yes, not --color=auto
Package: grep Version: 2.6.3-2 Severity: normal If I pipe the output of `grep --color` to something like `less -R` then I expect '--color' to be obeyed. If I instead say `grep --color=yes | less -R`, it is of course obeyed, but it would be much more useful to not have to force it to color=yes when it's quite obvious from the start, that's what I meant when I said "--color". -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-3-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_AU.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_AU.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages grep depends on: ii dpkg 1.15.5.6 Debian package management system ii install-info 4.13a.dfsg.1-5 Manage installed documentation in ii libc6 2.10.2-6 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib grep recommends no packages. Bug#562700: mailman-loop not handled by recommended Exim config
I was intending to follow up to this bug with a suggested router and transport pair for Exim, as soon as I got around to working them out. However, I prefer the alternative approach suggested by upstream in http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/2010-May/069504.html which is simply to alias mailman-loop to root, or whichever local system user you prefer. So something similar to the following would be added to /etc/aliases mailman-loop: root While I don't understand Mailman's Postfix configuration, I believe this this is a nice simple solution which would probably solve the problem for Postfix too. Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.32-12 Severity: important I came across this BUG yesterday on my Asus Eee PC 1000HG. I had probably done 10-15 suspend/resume cycles that day. I think I had mounted curlftpfs over a somewhat flaky 3G connection earlier that day, but I didn't access it at the time of the BUG (though I cannot speak for cron jobs, etc.). Well, I can't really do this, because helpful debhelper will revert my changes, unless I override the permission normalization procedure in rules, which I don't want to do, because there are often permission issues with the tarballs. As I mentioned in the previous email, the file only gets packaged if arch is Linux via mc.install.linux, so do you think it's a good idea to chgrp || true in such a case unconditionally? -- Sincerely yours, Yury V. What value does it add *on > the PTS* compared to what is already available in the Ubuntu box? > Wouldn't it be better to work with Ubuntu on a better patches.u.c? Well… I'not convinced by the current approach :) For me, it's way simpler to read some lines of a changelog containing exactly the information I'm looking for, instead of digging into a big patch with a lot of noise. Honestly, I consider the current "patches for …" link near to useless. I think that maintainers (at least, me) don't want to waste too much time to know important changes done in Ubuntu. The current "Ubuntu" box tell me (in a readable and quick way) only the Ubuntu version, but doesn't list the changes. It provides a patch, but I won't read every debdiff patch for every package I want to inspect because it's a PITA. IMO, "UbuntuDiff" answers that need. I also have in mind to add¹ some features like: a simple patch viewer, list of packages in Ubuntu and not in Debian, etc… Actually, it would be nice if we had a PTS for derivatives where changes can be shown directly like in: http://ubuntudiff.debian.net/linux-ntfs.html You may argue then that it's not our job to do that and Ubuntu should provide its own interface for that and I would agree. But, as a maintainer, I don't want to special case Ubuntu² and I would love to have a central place where I can see changes done in my packages in Debian derivatives. ¹: Any help is welcome if you {want to speed up the process, are interested}. ²: no, the source code of UbuntuDiff is not Ubuntu specific. * Fabian Greffrath , 2010-05-18, 10:28: Seems to be a race condition in the check for the legacy avcodec include file location. Please try the patch attached (which also fixes a bashism BTW). I believe that bashisms are the only problems here. The bug didn't trigger earlier, because dash didn't support LINENO and configure scripts try to avoid such shells; as a result, the configure script was effectively run by bash. However, LINENO has been implemented in dash (>= 0.5.5.1-4), so the script is run by /bin/sh now. -- Jakub Wilk signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#567926: setting up an DSA? Why took fixing so long?
Hi again. I might have completely overestimated the criticality of that issue... if so, sorry in advance for making noise. Was it "just" that the number iteration was wrongly written, or was it also, that s2k was _always_ only iterated 65536? The first would mean that the key itself is correctly encrypted (e.g. with millions of iterations), but the number is stored incorrectly and you cannot longer use it (as decryption fails). Would be a nasty DoS issue,... but no possible security compromise of the key material. The second would mean, that if a user deliberately decided to use e.g. millions of iterations (perhaps he needs that level of security),... nevertheless, only 65536 s2k iterations happened. Thus, possible security compromise of all keys. Cheers, Chris. Bug#567926: setting up an DSA? Why took fixing so long?
Hi. Two questions: 1) Are we sure that this only affected gnupg 2.0.14? Werner does not mention concretely whether versions before are affected or not (http://marc.info/?l=gnupg-users&m=126451730710129&w=2). When entered 2.0.14 testing, and do we need to release a DSA? Has the security team being noticed about this issue? Should we do so now? 2) According to the BTS, the bug was filed on the 1st of February, few days after reported by Werner. How could it happen, that it take such tremendously long to fix that in the Debian Package? Nearly 4 months!! Give that this bug is highly critical and given the special security sensitive nature of packages like gnupg,... I guess we need something to better track this. Last but not least: For users that used the affected versions,... it's really hard to notice that there was a problem at all (not everybody reads the changelogs)... Can we do anything here? (perhaps this needs to be reopened for the above issues) Cheers, Chris. Bug#581606: NMU of pinball
Hello Matthias, a 0-day NMU for a quite recent bug report is quite rude from the maintainer POV, in particular because you didn't ping the bug neither you post a patch on the bug report (as required by devref) and you didn't upload to a DELAYED queue, giving time to the maintainer to react. Funny how the MU came only minutes after your NMU, another sign of un-coordinated NMU. Bug#582097: nagios-statd-server: division by zero when gawk installed and swap size is 0
Package: nagios-statd-server Severity: normal In line 21 /usr/sbin/nagios-statd contains a shell command to determine swap usage: free | awk '$1~/^Swap:/{print ($3/$2)*100}' When gawk is installed, zero swap size causes an error message and an exit code 2 (which mistakenly marks the host as critical). Zero swap size may occur routinely on virtualized systems such as openvz. (The default awk binary has no division by zero error, but results in "nan".) I don't think you need to worry about debhelper handling broader searches itself - one of these days man-db will have to deal with that, although doing so involves some quite big changes which I haven't got round to yet and I don't think it's all that urgent. > (Should dh_installman stop converting so links to symlinks at all? > I think lintian warns about some so links.) Generally it's a good thing to convert .so links to symlinks: mandb can handle symlinks more efficiently, and although the difference is relatively small it does matter when thousands of pages are involved. I don't think it's worth micromanaging individual packages, but having dh_installman take the more efficient path is useful. My suggestion would be that dh_installman should only convert to symlinks if the target of the symlink can be found (by whatever resolution method) in the same package, and otherwise it should leave .so links alone. That way, we'll get most of the efficiency gains, but links that require more complicated resolution by man-db at run-time will still work. Bug#581767: RFP: rome -- Java library to handle Atom feed
Hi The OSGi metadata looks fine except for Import-Package: ...org.jdom.adapters;version=3D"1.0.0"... which I suspect should have been a "1.1.1" like the others. Also, javahelper has picked up the dependency on libjdom1-java so you can use the ${java:Depends} variable in the Depends line for librome-java= =2E Finally I think you should reduce the Recommends of the doc package to a suggest. I doubt most of our users will use the javadoc for Rome. ~Niels signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Bug#581606: NMU of pinball
Hi Sandro, a 0-day NMU for a quite recent bug report is quite rude from the maintainer POV, in particular because you didn't ping the bug neither you post a patch on the bug report (as required by devref) and you didn't upload to a DELAYED queue, giving time to the maintainer to react. Funny how the MU came only minutes after your NMU, another sign of un-coordinated NMU. If you have a look at http://wiki.debian.org/LowThresholdNmu, you'll see that I accept this sort of NMU for all packages except for the net-snmp one (here I just require anyone to resgister as co-maintainer and add the package to SVN first, BTW. Otherwise, the history in SVN becomes a mess). In this case I was just preparing to fix a piupart error and finally decided to push it out now that a RC bug was rised. I don't think this NMU caused a lot of work on Matthias ;-) Thanks, Jochen -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Bug#582102: Loosing control of wmii after killing an X client

I also have in mind to add¹ some features like: a > simple patch viewer, list of packages in Ubuntu and not in Debian, etc… UbuntuDiff does 3 things: A) aggregate data about a set of packages selected by grep-dctrl => orthogonal to what the PTS does B) provide links to some useful resources about the package => already done by the PTS C) extract the changelog from the diff => that's the main point we are interested in While I agree that (C) is a nice feature, it could go much further, providing direct links to the patches in debian/patches, extracting their description, etc. That's similar to what patch-tracker.debian.org aims at doing. The problem is that we need a good script that parses the diff and extracts the useful information. That script could be used on patch-tracker.debian.org and patches.u.c. Now, if we stuck to the changelog, it would be better to provide it as a box that appears when the mouse cursor is over the Ubuntu patch (using some cool javascript). Bug#580807: Acknowledgement (libinsighttoolkit3-java: the java bindings as built by Debian don't work)
Hello FWIW I tried building the package with pbuilder. When built in Lenny environment the java bindings work, when built in Squeeze/Sid environment the packages are broken. It is necessary to enable the Squeeze/Sid repositories to build on Lenny but since the default package manager on Lenny is capable of installing packages from non-default sources to fulfill dependencies this is not a problem. On Squeeze the package manager is more limited. Note that I do build with openjdk on my own install and these packages also work so it is not the Java version, it must be the version of some other library. The build logs are rather large but I can send them if you are interested.
