AFAICS there is no qemu-kvm in Debian. And Qemu doesn't make use
of the kvm kernel module. ???

Point of this br is: Would you mind to change the Description
field in debian/control accordingly?

Bug#553913: num-utils: numprocess's man page may not need the division warning

2009-11-02 Thread Kingsley G. Morse Jr.
Package: num-utils
Version: 0.5-11
Severity: minor

Thanks for the handy package.

I like applying basic math operations to standard
input and output.

The man page for numprocess currently says

"There is currently no way to take the number
found in the text stream and use it as the
numerator instead of the denominator of a
division operation."

but it seems to me that this warning may be
unnecessary.

Here's how to use the number found in the text
stream as both the numerator

echo 4 | numprocess /%3/

and denominator

echo 4 | numprocess /^-1,*3/

Thanks,
Kingsley

Bug#550679: MPD

2009-11-02 Thread Max Kellermann
Hi,

MPD is using the mp4ff headers from the faad package. This change
breaks the MPD build. You should at least rename the -dev package to
reflect the API change: APIs have been removed from the libfaad-dev
package, so packages build-depending on libfaad-dev expecting these
APIs to be present won't work anymore.

Is it based on xipmsg code or is it completely different ?

Bug#553918: virtualbox-ose-source: Please, make dkms a recommendation.

2009-11-02 Thread Yannick Roehlly
Package: virtualbox-ose-source
Version: 3.0.10-dfsg-1
Severity: normal

The new virtualbox-ose-source depends on dkms. Although dkms is great for
people who don't want to bother with module compilation / installation,
some others prefer to do it manually.

Would you please make virtualbox-ose-source only recommend dkms?

Sincerely,

Yannick

Just for record (I got the same 'bug' in one of my packages), I see that
libreadline5-dev in stable provides libreadline-dev.
So, even with backport in mind, this build-depends can be reduced into
only libreadline-dev (but this would be a wishlist bug, not an important one)

I downgraded mine and it will be fixed in my next upload (but I'm not
doing one just for that)

Ok, what's the status on this one. I've been a bit lost due to other
people replying with I guess different issues. So what about the initial
complain? Are you still not able to suspend using hardware key (even
when configured correctly in xfpm) while you can using the right click
on the systray icon and select suspend or hibernate?

Bug#553920: Please don't provide a transitional package to geeqie

2009-11-02 Thread Klaus Ethgen
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Package: gqview
Version: 1:1.0~beta2-3
Severity: normal

Hi,

Please do not provide a transitional package to geeqie as there is
different functionality.

Don't understand me wrong, I am using geeqie myself and also did some
contributions to that software (as well as the german translation). But
at the moment I'd like to use the both applications in parallel for the
following reasons:
   - Geeqie is somewhat slower in some constellations. That happens if
you have many pictures in one folder.
   - Geeqie has a other structure where to save the metadata
informations. So selfmade scripts might fail using geeqie. There is
also a issue how to migrate the old files in a safe way.

However, I think to add this transitional package in the end would be a
good idea but this takes some more time to settle down the code. Maybe
for the moment you might use the version 2.1.5 with a suggest or
recommend for geeqie.

Bug#553922: "cryptsetup: lvm is not available" lock up at boot

2009-11-02 Thread Stefano Zacchiroli
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.31-1
Severity: serious

Hi kernel maintainer,
starting with kernel 2.6.30-2, my boot process lock up with the
message "cryptsetup: lvm is not available", just after having asked the
LUKS passphrase. Currently, I can reproduce it with 2.6.30-2 and
2.6.31-1. It still works fine with 2.6.30-1.

It seems that LVM is not initialized and/or initialized differently
starting with 2.6.30-2.

It might be a problem of some missing configuration on my side, but
given that it was working up to 2.6.30-1 I would have expected at least
a NEWS.Debian entry telling me what to do. This is the main reason for
me reporting this bug as RC: is it possible to provide some smooth
upgrade experience?

My current lvm/crypt setup is as deployed by an out of the box d-i
installation a while ago, in the Lenny release timeframe.

I'm attaching: /etc/crypttab, /etc/fstab, /etc/lvm/lvm.conf,
/boot/grub/grub.cfg . Let me know if I can provide anything else useful.

Many thanks in advance and for your kernel maintenance work!
Cheers.

It looks more like a bug of xserver than a geeqie one. It simply
should not crash regardless what ugly will applications do. Further more
it does not happen to me, I would definitely notice that ;-).

What X video driver do you use?

This might be caused by our patch to support newer clutter, which has

Bug#553923: winbind: idmap_rid cache becomes corrupted when mixing group and user queries

2009-11-02 Thread Castan Eric
Package: winbind
Version: 2:3.2.5-4lenny7
Severity: important

I have investigated a strange issue on a system not allowing users to login.
It appeared that the winbind cache eventually got corrupt when mixing group
queries and user queries.

I am using the idmap_rid allocator.

If one queries with "wbinfo -G" for a group whose id is indeed a user id, that
user won't exist any more in winbind

Example on a sane system:

e...@pp2tnce10c:~$ wbinfo -i 'PREPROD\jcb'
jcb:*:11129:10513:XXX YY:/home/PREPROD+jcb:/bin/bash

How to get a corrupt system (different from the first one, though)

## Step 1 : Try to group-resolve a user id
e...@pp2tnsa10c:~$ wbinfo -G 11129
S-1-5-21-4162644616-3733566000-1282571631-1129

## Step 2 : You can check that jcb's account is locked because his SID is now
associated to a group account in winbind cache
e...@pp2tnsa10c:~$ id jcb
id: jcb: No such user
e...@pp2tnsa10c:~$ wbinfo -s S-1-5-21-4162644616-3733566000-1282571631-1129
PREPROD\jcb 1
e...@pp2tnsa10c:~$ wbinfo -n 'PREPROD\jcb'
S-1-5-21-4162644616-3733566000-1282571631-1129 User (1)
e...@pp2tnsa10c:~$ wbinfo -i 'PREPROD\jcb'
Could not get info for user PREPROD\jcb
##

For some reason, this occurs without intent on one of my systems.
If you want the locked account to be able to log in again, you have to wait for
the positive ttl to expire, or to manually clean up winbind caches.

I attach my smb.conf so that one can easily reproduce

e...@pp2tnsa10c:~$ testparm -s

What you think should stay in "simple viewer"? EXIF support? Color
management? Lirc support? GPS support? All these are compile time
optional external dependencies, which do bring additional libraries.

I get the same problem here. I have a small monitoring script using
`ps aux' to update a rrd file, launched every minute from cron. For
yesterday I got 19 such failures reported per email (a ~1.3% failure
rate).

this is feature of mime-support, it escapes "unsafe" paths by creating

I like to define strict interface in advance. If we can support this without
too much effort and in a clean way now, why wait?

So --max-parallel=0 becomes "free" since --max-parallel=-1 is now an alias for
unlimited. I attach a patch which turns --max-parallel=0 into "do nothing" as
I suggested previously. As a consequence, an argument for --max-parallel is no
longer optional (which does make much sense since it has lost its "enable
parallel" meaning). So -1 = unlimited, 0 - do nothing, 1 - no parallel, n > 1
- n max jobs. This looks very logical for me.

Probably you are right, but sometimes people need to do some hackish things.
In my opinion, having an interface complete (if it does not end up convoluted)
is always a good thing.

So as far as I'm concerned, I like everything else in "parallel-implicit"
branch and I think it is ready to be merged to master.

Subject: [PATCH] Support --max-parallel=0 as "do nothing"

Since now we use --max-parallel=-1 (default) to specify "unlimited parallel",
handle --max-parallel=0 as "do nothing" (i.e. prevents dh_auto from messing
with environment in order to enforce/disallow parallel). This patch also makes
it mandatory to specify argument for --max-parallel (optional arg doesn't make
sense since parallel is implicit), explicitly handles values of --max-parallel
and DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=parallel=n below -1 as -1 (strict interface for build
system classes) and adjusts test suite a bit.

Bug#552208: Middle of the road solution

2009-11-02 Thread Alexandros Frantzis
Hi,

as awesome is basically a tiling window manager I would expect its
default mode to remain "tile".

As a middle of the road solution I think that at least it should be easy for
someone to change the default behavior in the default rc.lua file. For example,
a snippet like the one below placed in the default rc.lua (proposed in IRC)
should make it easy for people unfamiliar with the awesome API to choose their
default layout.

-- Layout to use by default in all tags
default_layout = awful.layout.suit.floating

-- {{{ Tags
-- Define tags table.
tags = {}
for s = 1, screen.count() do
-- Each screen has its own tag table.
tags[s] = awful.tag({ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 }, s, default_layout)
end
-- }}}

Regards,
Alexandros

Bug#216768: apt: Confirmed under Lenny with several sources and pinning

2009-11-02 Thread Ivan Vilata i Balaguer
Package: apt
Version: 0.7.20.2+lenny1
Followup-For: Bug #216768

My APT setup includes sources from Lenny (stable) and Squeeze (testing), pinned
so that only
certain packages get pulled from testing. I have ``apticron`` installed and
since I made the
mixed setup with pinning, it reports that ``dash`` and ``diffutils`` are
pending an upgrade,
when neither of them are installed. It happens that both packages are
essential in Squeeze,
but not in Lenny. If I install the Lenny version of ``dash`` and try to remove
it with
Aptitude, it insists in the installed package being essential, which is untrue.

Forcing the removal of ``dash`` and ``diffutils`` reverts the system to the
same state (i.e.
``apticron`` recommending the upgrade of the uninstalled packages).

What I meant to say is that there is no need to abort the initialization
if the directory pointed by $HOME doesn't exist; it is possible to write
PhysicsFS-based applications that don't use $HOME at all.

What is so special about $HOME that PhysicsFS needs to check (only)
whether it exists or not? Note that the initialization works perfectly
fine if $HOME is _not_ defined, or if $HOME exists but is _not_
readable/writeable, so I would expect the same behaviour if $HOME
doesn't exist.

(Besides, ensuring the existence of $HOME during the initialization
doesn't guarantee that it will be present later on... What if someone
removes it after launching and initializing the program?)

Are you sure the problem isn't that the GNOME+devickeit / lvm2 conflict has
resulted in the lvm2 package being removed from your system?

(This happened to me here - fortunately I noticed the problem when trying to
create a snapshot, and didn't have to wait for a reboot to discover it...)

Please check _all_ updated packages during this time. Reassigning to
cryptsetup, the kernel package only provides the interfaces this package
uses and seems to fail.

Please provide sufficient version and update information in a follow-up.

Fantastic !

Will do. Thx

Ok, I think you put in the option to OFF. I'll see if I can easily do
the src build from the official package, simply switching the option
to ON (+installing nv package stuff)

libproj is VTK 5.4 AFAIK. But I'll try to the do the 3 others.

I am ok with #552349, #552348, #552350 open for now, but instead
please provide a fix for #533193, this one is really annoying.

hi there,

it seems that the NMPanSupport and NMDunSupport plugins only work with
network-manager

wishlist
bug against network-manager for this).

in the meantime, afaict the plugin that we really want to use is the
NMIntegration plugin,
which doesn't seem installed by default. perhaps this should be done?

Bug#553928: Change dpkg-source to produce new source formats by default

2009-11-02 Thread Raphael Hertzog
Package: dpkg-dev
Severity: wishlist

It's been my plan since some time to modify dpkg-source to produce new
source formats by default, now that the archive accepts the new formats,
it's about time to look closer on how to make this happen.

For Debian as a whole, we need to fix the bugs listed here:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?users=hert...@debian.org;tag=3.0-quilt-by-default

For dpkg-dev, we need to decide on how to handle this auto-conversion.
Currently, dpkg-source has a logic to write the source format into
debian/source/format at unpack time when the format is different from
"1.0" (see Dpkg::Source::Package::extract()). This ensures that the
non-default format is reused for the next build.

This would need to be revisited obviously if 1.0 is no longer the default
format.

In theory, uploads to (old)?stable(-security)?/p-u are built with the
dpkg-source in that suite so they should not be affected by this change
but maybe there are some measures to take to avoid problems nevertheless?

Cheers,

Bug#550201: this is an xscreensaver package installation script bug

2009-11-02 Thread Vladimir Komendantsky
It appears that there was an unwanted interaction between
gnome-screensaver and xscreensaver. The latter package wrote a script
/etc/X11/Xsession.d/80xscreensaver_start that was executed by
/etc/X11/Xsession and caused xscreensaver to load silently. Besides,
xscreensaver created an entry in Gnome "Startup Applications" named
XScreensaver and set it ON by default without noticing that there was
already an xscreensaver entry made by me (and set to OFF) and a
similar entry for gnome-screensaver that was ON.

Switching off the XScreensaver entry in Startup Applications did not
suffice and then I found the lower-level script 80xscreensaver_start.
Removing this script from /etc/X11/Xsession.d/80xscreensaver_start
resolved the inconsistency and now xscreensaver does not start.

Regards,
Vladimir

Bug#249933: wrong package

2009-11-02 Thread Thomas Clavier
Hello,

From Version: 1:5.0.3-3, monit load services configuration files from
/etc/monit/conf.d/ in my opinion, each daemon must embedded a monit
configuration file.

For example, postfix package must have a /etc/monit/conf.d/postfix.conf
file.

with that, this bug can be closed, and we can create one bug for each
monitored service.

regards,

Bug#531002: apticron: wrong detection of packages pending an upgrade

2009-11-02 Thread Alster
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

I can second this.

> apticron report [Thu, 08 Oct 2009 18:59:18 +]
>
> apticron has detected that some packages need upgrading on:
> amanita.mayfirst.org
> [ 209.234.249.215 ]
> The following packages are currently pending an upgrade:
> dash 0.5.4-12
> diffutils 1:2.8.1-18
>
>
> Package Details:
> Reading changelogs...
> apt-listchanges: didn't find any valid .deb archives

We, the admins of this Debian 5.0.3 server, kept receiving apticron
generated emails of not up-to-date packages, even after 'aptitude
update' and 'aptitude dist-upgrade'. So I looked at
/var/log/apt/term.log* and
/var/log/aptitude* and found that dash and diffutils are not installed
now and have not been installed, removed/purged or upgraded within the
log period (which reaches back until April this year). This would also
explain why apt-listchanges reports, in the apticron emails: "didn't
find any valid .deb archives". These packages are simply not installed.

So apticron was reporting packages to be pending an upgrade which were
not even installed, namely dash and diffutils. This looked like a bug to
me. So I found this bug report: #531002

Contained in this bug report is a suggestion to run this:
  apt-get --ignore-hold dist-upgrade -y -s

This simulates (-s) a dist-upgrade overriding the 'hold' state of any
packages (--ignore-hold), if any, and skips any on screen prompts (-y).

Running this on amanita (after 'aptitude update') does in fact output:
>> The following NEW packages will be installed:
>> dash diffutils

The same output is generated when running just
  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

When running
  sudo aptitude dist-upgrade
it does, however, not list any packages to be installed and will just quit.

This is even though these packages are also not in any special state
(such as 'hold' or 'forbid'). So I assume dash and diffutils are
actually dependencies of some other packages we have installed, or apt
is buggy or something... It is strange that apt and aptitude would
report different results, though. And by this time we can supposedly
tell that apticron is not the one package acting incorrectly here.

Looking into dependencies, aptitude reports only one revserse dependency
for 'diffutils', namely 'diff'. So it claims that 'diff' is the only
package which would require 'diffutils' to be installed. And 'diff' is
not installed either.

Reverse dependencies for 'dash' are slightly more complex, but according
to aptitude, none of its reverse dependencies are installed either.

I'm somewhat puzzled.

* Why does "apt-get dist-upgrade" report that dash and diffutils need to
be installed?
* Why does "apt-get dist-upgrade" report something different than
"aptitude dist-upgrade"

Bug#553182: libesd0 needs /dev/dsp, provided by oss-compat

Good point. Newly built packages should depend on libesd-alsa0 | libesd0
instead, but for some old builds libesd0 is still pulled.

I’m wondering whether there’s any point at all keeping two packages on
Linux systems. There could be a single package, using ALSA on Linux and
OSS on other architectures.
