This got rejected 2006 already, and as the name is still the same, it
will be again. Except, of course, you rename it :) :

Hi,

The name for this package is not acceptable, please either choose something
sensible for the name in Debian or see if upstream (one of whom I believe is
wannabe DD) to use something more sensible themselves.

Thanks.

Bug#516699: nagios-nrpe-plugin: dependency chain reaching till apache2

2009-02-23 Thread Martin Haller
Package: nagios-nrpe-plugin
Version: 2.12-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

if one installs nagios-nrpe-plugin via apt-get, it also installs apache2 via
the dependency chain:

- nagios-nrpe-plugin recommends nagios3
- nagios3 depends nagios3-common
- nagios3-common recommends apache2

Would it make more sense to remove this recommends-dependency or move it to a
suggests-dependency?

Thanx!

Martin

Hello,

http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Hans_Boehm/gc/gc_source/gc-7.1.tar.gz

that version is available since May 2008. I'd need it (well, there are also
some CVS patches needed, but I can't force you to include those) to package
pnet (DotGNU Portable.NET), which includes a bundled 7.1+patches source.
Otherwise I'll have to disable GC capabilities :/

Are you going to work on it anytime? This bug is *old* now.

Bug#516701: No sound on Thinkpad 600E

2009-02-23 Thread Abu Yoav
Package: alsa-base
Version: 1.0.17.dfsg-4

I've installed Debian 5.0 on my Thinkpad 600E. Sound did not work.
However, I've found a workaround on the net. What follows is
essentially a synopsis of
http://www.wlug.org.nz/ThinkpadNotes

0) As a preliminary step, you have to disable the "Quick Boot" option
in the bios (since we will not be using plug-and-play). To do this,
press F1 on boot. Then,
Config->Quick Boot->Disable

1) Now, we have to disable plug-and-play and acpi on boot. So, in
/boot/grub/menu.lst
append
pnpbios=off acpi=off
to the line that starts with
# kopt=
Then, run grub-update

2) We now need to load the sound card "manually". Append
snd-cs4236
to
/etc/modules
Note: after running lspci we get
00:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: Cirrus Logic CS 4610/11
[CrystalClear SoundFusion Audio Accelerator] (rev 01)
But, we use cs4236 and NOT cs4610 or whatever

3) We now give the loading options. So, create (or edit if exists)
/etc/modprobe.d/sound
and write in it
options snd-cs4236 isapnp=0 port=0x530 cport=0x538 irq=5 fm_port=0x388
sb_port=0x220 dma1=1 dma2=0 isapnp=0
in it (all in one line)

That should be it. But, in the process, we've created a bug. Running
shutdown -h now
does not shutdown the computer. The above mentioned link suggests a
fix: create the file
/etc/modprobe.d/power
and in it write
options apm power_off=1 realmode_power_off=1
However, that didn't work for me.

Please write back in case there are any questions. I'd be very happy to help!

I would expect it to be in all of them to make it easy for the reporting
code to always have the information available where it needs it. It
should be pretty trivial for Lintian to know what archive area it read the
current Packages or Sources file from and encode that information into the
index.

2009-02-23 Thread Fabian Greffrath

Hi,

bfi...@free.fr schrieb:

I'm stuck after following the fixes offered using unstable or experimental.

Well, at the time of your writing, ffmpeg in unstable and experimental
had implemented two completely different concepts with regard to the
creation and compilation of unstripped ffmpeg source code. So it would
be very helpful if you could at least tell us the actual version you
are using.

"make: *** [build-stamp-shared] Erreur 2

What's this in English? Are there some more error messages before or
after these lines?

from the "DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=internalencoders dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc" command.

Have you recreated the tarball with the same DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS before?

Is this helpful or am I just doing something wrong ?

Please use the Debian BTS for reporting bugs and provide some more
information about the package version you are actually using, the
steps you have already taken, which "fixes offered using unstable or
experimental" you refer to and what exactly caused the build to fail.

Thank you very much!

I'll let the bug opened a few days, just in case some other upgrades
trigger the same thing, but basically there's not much thing we can do
about.

Cheers, and thanks for the update.

Well maybe you could add an API to use key codes instead of key maps...
(note that for the french keyboard case, binding Meta-2, Meta-7, Meta-9,
and Meta-0 for tag switching is a real pain in the arse)

Bug#516705: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686: tulip_stop_rxtx() failed, problem tulip <--> dmfe

2009-02-23 Thread Joerg Morbitzer
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-686
Version: 2.6.26-13
Severity: normal

Hi,

after I upgraded one of my DSL gateways from Debian Etch to Lenny
one of the network cards did not work properly any longer, syslog
was reporting this constantly (roughly every 3 seconds) ...

:02:0b.0: tulip_stop_rxtx() failed (CSR5 0xfc74 CSR6 0x20422c2)

and the network on this network card was down. Both modules - dmfe and
tulip - were loaded by the system automatically. After manually removing
both and loading just "dmfe" the network card worked again as expected.

kind regards, Joerg.

Thanks. Lintian is complaining as well, so yes, we know that. And it'll
be fixed. One day. Xfmpc doesn't badly need a manpage, it doesn't really
have command-line options or whatever. So no, we don't lose time on
this. If you want to write a manpage and provide it, it'd be nice,
thanks.

Bug#516704: devscripts: uscan should parse not only directory with highes version number

2009-02-23 Thread Andreas Tille
Package: devscripts
Version: 2.10.35lenny2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

DEHS is reporting new versions of GNUmed with the current watch file
which says:

  http://www.gnumed.de/downloads/client/([\d\.]+)/GNUmed-client\.(.*)\.tgz

These "new" versions are only release candidates (0.4-rc\d) which should
not be packaged (as I agreed with upstream). So I might live with these
false alarms for the next couple of weeks but I would like to fix the
watch file properly. So I tried:

  http://www.gnumed.de/downloads/client/([\d\.]+)/GNUmed-client\.([\d\.]+)\.tgz

but this does not even detects the recent version (0.3.10). My guess is
that uscan is at first seeking for the directory with the highest version
( http://www.gnumed.de/downloads/client/0.4 ) and then parses for the
tarball which matches GNUmed-client\.([\d\.]+)\.tgz - but there is no such
file (these are only in ( http://www.gnumed.de/downloads/client/0.3 ).

As you can read in the thread starting at
  http://lists.debian.org/debian-qa/2009/02/msg00105.html
I discussed this problem on debian-qa and Paul Wise actually found a
workyround for this problem but we agreed that it would be a nice feature
of uscan to parse lower verisoned directories of the scan of the latest
might have failed.

Kind regards and thanks for maintaining uscan

  Andreas.

Yes we know, we didn't update the package so nothing changed. I imported
a somewhat corrected version in our svn but, frankly it doesn't have
high priority for the moment (especially since it's a kind of “svn
snapshot” for the moment.

Basically, stay tuned.

You can already use keycodes instead of keysyms. You can use #10 to bind
the `1' key (or & on your french keyboard).

Yes sure. What about:

That should cover the most general case.

Shouldn't that be the default, then, so that it works anywhere (at least
for the [0-9] keys) ?

Bug#516706: lintian: [new check] report on missing commas in build-deps split across several lines

2009-02-23 Thread Jo Shields
Package: lintian
Version: 2.2.4~intrepid1
Severity: wishlist

*** Please type your report below this line ***
It is nice when dealing with very long Build-Depends lines to split them
across several lines, like this:

Build-Depends: foo,
 bar,
 baz

However, lintian does not notice if one of the commas on the end of a
line is missing, and the source package might enter the archive in an
unbuildable state (e.g. if the package is tested in a dirty chroot, then
the packager may not notice the problem)

It would be good to check for this fairly common error - the current
Lintian package in Sid doesn't seem to check it.

I'm not sure how to tell which torrent these pieces are from, which may be
an important diagnostic, so if somebody could tell me how to find that, I'll
do so and add it to this bug report.

Whatever the reason, howeer, it seems to me that repeatedly trying to
download a piece from a web server that claims it doesn't exist must
indicate something a little more worrying than just a large log file!

Note, however, that the piece numbers do change, each piece appearing in the
log for around a day or so.

Cheers & God bless

Bug#516707: RM: libapache-mod-php5/stable-security -- ROM; obsolete, causes trouble for stable users

2009-02-23 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: important

Hi,

Could you please remove the obsolete libapache-mod-php5 5.2.0-10+lenny1
from security.debian.org in the lenny suite?

This is important because it keeps confusing users: libapache-mod-php5
(the Apache 1.3 version) has been removed since lenny, but it keeps being
available from the security archive. However, this is an obsolete version
which is hence also not kept up to date with security fixes; people must
migrate to libapache2-mod-php5.

I think this is a symtom of #464045, however, removing this package by
hand swiftly is in my opinion preferred over waiting for that bug to be
resolved.

thanks!
Thijs

Bug#516709: huge /lib/modules directory, almost 3x size of 2.6.26

2009-02-23 Thread martin f krafft
Package: linux-image-2.6.28-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.28-1
Severity: important

While the .deb is only 3M larger than the 2.6.26-1-amd64 .deb,
unpacked, this 2.6.28 package tries to install 212M worth of modules
into /lib/modules, while 2.6.26 only had 78M. It seems likely that
there was a build error here, e.g. maybe noopt or nostrip was set.

* URL : http://search.cpan.org/dist/Data-Pageset/
* License : Artistic | GPL-1+ (like perl)

Description : Page numbering and page sets

The object produced by Data::Pageset can be used to create page navigation,
it inherits from Data::Page and has access to all methods from this object.

In addition it also provides methods for dealing with set of pages, so
that if there are too many pages you can easily break them into chunks for
 the user to browse through.

You can even choose to view page numbers in your set in a 'sliding' fassion.

The object can easily be passed to a templating system such as Template
Toolkit or be used within a script.

Hi,

sisu-pdf currently has:
Suggests: evince | kpdf | xpdf
I think it would be better to suggest the virtual pdf-viewer package (provided
by any PDF viewer in Debian), ie:
  Suggests: evince | pdf-viewer
so any other PDF viewer that is not evince, kpdf or xpdf can satisfy this
suggestion.

Had to change it from default_mail_env to mail_location, I guess it's been
deprecated long time, but I still had it in working config before
todays upgrade.
Also 'listen = [::]' no longer listens to IPv4 socket, I haven't done
kernel upgrades, only dovecot upgrade.

'mail_extra_groups = mail' is also deprecated and should be changed
in debian default config.

Bug#463793: rsyslogd restarts are not ignored

2009-02-23 Thread Dmitry Semyonov
On Mon, 4 Feb 2008 08:15:24 +1300, martin f krafft wrote:

> logcheck has the policy not to ignore restart messages. Thanks for

Quote from README.logcheck-database:

"Unfortunately, we don't have the time to add and update rules for
everything, therefore the following exceptions apply:

*  Debug messages
* Messages produced by software not included in Debian
* Temporary messages which are due to a bug in the package
* Messages related to daemon startups and shutdowns

Please do not file bugs related to these messages."

As I understand, the rationale for not fixing the bug is "we don't
have the time to add and update rules for everything". But since Lenny
release, rsyslog no longer falls into the "everything" category. It is
now the default system logger, recommended to be used on every Debian
machine which does not have any specific syslog requirements not met
by rsyslog. So, you can imagine how much time will be wasted by Debian
users on the whole to manually disable these daily notifications just
because you don't want to make an exception for "the policy". (On the
other hand, I understand that it's too late already.)

P.S.
One of the main reasons why I chose logcheck in favor of logwatch is
that the former sends notifications for 24/7 PCs only when needed
instead of every day. This, in my opinion, should be the ultimate
logcheck policy for default Debian installs.

See below.

url() calls query_string() that calls escape().

> %C3%A4

> public subroutines.

This is the scenario:

My CGI program runs and produces an ISO-8859-2 encoded HTML page
with a form that processed by GET method.
User enters some accented chars (e.g. "ä") in form then clicks submit button.
Browser honors encoding and sends back a latin2 encoded URL to server
like http://www.example.com/sample.cgi&search=%E4 .
CGI program unescapes query string and stores internally as {search=>"\xe4"}.
When it calls url() in order to place a self pointing URL on next HTML page.
Sub url() calls query_string() that uses CGI::Util::escape to produce this:
http://www.example.com/sample.cgi&search=%C3A4 .
This is because escape() assumes that HTML page encoded in UTF-8.
However if the user follows this link, browser sends back the wrong URL.
after unescaping stores {search=>"\xc3\xa4"} and prints
http://www.example.com/sample.cgi&search=%C3%83%C2%A4 in the next round
and so on.

I could not demonstrate this behavior off-line.
But I set up a short demo program that you can test with your browser
if necessary.

This script below shows no more than your one liner above.

--8<-8<---
#!/usr/bin/perl

use strict;
use CGI::Util;
use Dumpvalue; my $dumper=Dumpvalue->new(quoteHighBit=>1);

my $latin2_string = "a\341e\351i\355o\363\366\365u\372\374\373"; #aáeéiíoóöőuúüű
$dumper->dumpValue($latin2_string);

my $escaped_string = CGI::Util::escape($latin2_string);
$dumper->dumpValue($escaped_string);

my $unescaped_string = CGI::Util::unescape($escaped_string);
$dumper->dumpValue($unescaped_string);
--8<-8<---

Ooops! Stop the press.
I've just noticed in 3.29 source that CGI::Util::escape is substantially
changed. It seems to be good for my purposes:
$toencode = pack("C*", unpack("C*", $toencode));
Note: this line can be omitted. :-)
(However may cause problems if someone wants to use UTF-8.)
Unfortunately the latest version (3.42) is confused again. :-(

Actually I defined my own MyCGI subclass that overrides CGI::query_string()
and CGI::Util::escape(). This works for me but is not a simple and
elegant solution.

Cheers

Gabor

We got another E-Mail from Paul Wise, telling that he'll remove
defoma for squeeze. So we don't need a defoma integration, instead we
should use fontconfig. Paul gave a short introduction how to
implement an integration. Anybody willing to do it?

Bug#516662: EeePC: Plugging the power launches email tool

2009-02-23 Thread Francois Gouget

I forgot to mention this in my previous email. For reference, here are
the events that acpi_listen reports when I plug the power in:

hotkey ATKD 0050 0011

And also, someone else had the same issue (albeit with Ubuntu) and
reported about it in his blog. It's in French but what's to be learnt
is that the EeePC 901 has the same issue.

Since coreutils 7.1, the coreutils package contains a binary 'timeout'.
This conflicts with the package 'timeout', which contains an almost

Bug#516719: Should probably Recommends: apt-xapian-index instead of Depends:

2009-02-23 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: aptitude
Version: 0.5.1-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

thanks for aptitude!

At #516254, it has been pointed out that apt-xapian-index is now getting
installed on pbuilder build systems, which is a problem.

At first I wonderer why, since I assumed that aptitude's
apt-xapian-index functions were somehow optional functions, and that it
would only Recommend it. It has then pointed out that indeed aptitude
Depends: on apt-xapian-index, pulling it in every time.

I am obviously happy if apt-xapian-index gets used as much as possible,
but I can think of various examples where it makes sense to have
aptitude but not apt-xapian-index. Besides pbuilder, sbuild and
friends, embedded systems also come to mind, and probably even cluster
nodes and similar kinds of server systems.

Would aptitude actually break if apt-xapian-index were not there, or can
the dependency be safely relaxed into a Recommends?

Ciao,

Enrico

You're right. The problem is not related to that at all. Rather, I ran
the original build with "debuild" but than retried with
"linux32 debian/rules build" to save the recompilation time. The
difference in the environment (most notably, debuild unsetting SHELL) is
the problem.

Did that and got this result:

Already fixed, coreutils 7.1-2 removed timeout and its manpage from the
package.

Bug#500697: Ping?

2009-02-23 Thread Daniel Watkins
Hello,

Could you let me know how this is going? If you are not likely to
finish packaging this any time soon, I would like to take over this ITP
(as a package I would like to get into Debian depends on it).

Regards,

Dan

Bug#516720: Implement a --stop option to stop a running indexer

2009-02-23 Thread Enrico Zini
Package: apt-xapian-index
Version: 0.16
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

use case:

 1. I install apt-xapian-index with a package manager
 2. apt-xapian-index is installed and postinst runs the indexer in
background
 3. I get back into the package manager, which runs apt-xapian-index,
which connects to the running indexer and reports progress, which
the package manager displays in a progress bar
 4. I get bored of waiting and click on an Abort button. The package
manager should be able to stop the background indexer, but at the
moment the only thing that it can do is to stop the updater that it
ran. This will leave the indexer working in the background.

This could be solved by implementing an update-apt-xapian-index --stop
option that connects to a running indexer and tells it to stop and
remove the partially built index.

Ciao,

Enrico

Is it actually a lockup (looks like what you say above, X just doesn't
move anymore, apart from the mouse maybe, and you need a reboot) or a
crash (another X session restarts automatically) ?

In both cases, we need the log of the crashed/failed session. After a
reboot, it should be in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old with some backtrace or
lockup details at the end.

You might want to try adding
Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
to the Device section of your xorg.conf and see if it helps.

Bug#516722: aumix -q said error while opening mixer: file or dir doesn't exist

2009-02-23 Thread Osvaldo La Rosa
Package: aumix
Version: 2.8-21
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,
I unfortunately have to remove aumix because it gives an error from the 1st
start or with aumix -q:

Script started on ma 23 feb 2009 11:30:02 CET
o...@asteroid:~$ aumix -q
aumix: fout tijdens openen mixer: Bestand of map bestaat niet
(error while opening mixer: file or directory doesn't exist)

I did some other tests:
o...@asteroid:~$ which aumix
/usr/bin/aumix
o...@asteroid:~$ ldd /usr/bin/aumix
linux-gate.so.1 =>  (0xb7fe2000)

libdl.so.2 => /lib/i686/cmov/libdl.so.2 (0xb7e3b000)

o...@asteroid:~$ strace aumix -q

o...@asteroid:~$ exit
exit
Script done on ma 23 feb 2009 11:32:21 CET

Important: since amixer is really unfriendly, I prefer and urge to have
again a good working aumix.
Note that I tried to install an older aumix version on Debian Lenny, with
exactly the same error message.

Bug#516723: wishlist: adding Desktop Screen Reader to the tasksel menu

2009-02-23 Thread Osvaldo La Rosa
Package: tasksel
Version: 2.78
Severity: wishlist

Hello team,

it would be nice to provide near the other offers inside the tasksel menu an
entry that you may call
Desktop Screen Reader
or
Desktop Assistive Technology
who will mark the gnome-orca to be installed to during the install process.

Since this would be optional, even as mysql or webserver etc are optional
too (not installed / marked by every user) this may not cause dammage to
sighted persons for now, while it may be useful for blind persons to know
that Orca+Espeak is there as well as Gnome itself.

This may also help sighted persons from LUGs, teachers, friends aso who need
to help a sighted person while they don't know what exactly must be added
herefore.

This will also complete a little bit the brltty support who is already
present now on the D-I.

Please do provide this entry if posible.

Can you please try last available snapshot of html2text (not currently
in archive, awaiting for upload, can be checked from [1])? It contains
some fix for '-ascii', not sure whether it this bug or not by now. If
this problem needs another fix, I will take a look soon.

Bug#516726: wishlist: turn show cursor no default to yes (blindfriendly wishlist)

2009-02-23 Thread Osvaldo La Rosa
Package: lynx
Version: 2.8.7dev9-2.1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

each time I install blindly a Debian system I have blindly to change
options, and that's made very uneasy to me due to the simple fact that "show
cursor" is default set to Off.
Please please change this deefiniteoly to On:
- sighted persons will be able to turn it off much more easier than we have
to do
- as easy as we turn off show colors now

In both cases, changing things are easier for sighted persons while it's
every time blindly that we have to set the cursor to On.

Thanx
Grtnx

Oh, no. I've opened a bug with aptitude asking if it can be downgraded
to a Recommends (#516719). I'm happy to have aptitude on my openmoko,
but I certainly don't want to have apt-xapia-index in it.

Where can I find instructions on how to query policy-rc.d for this
specific case?

Can it be just a case of:

if [ ! -x /usr/sbin/policy-rc.d ] || /usr/sbin/policy-rc.d apt-xapian-index
start
then
update-apt-xapian-index --quiet &
fi

The point is that the rebuild takes time, and a common use case is that
the data is needed by the package manager just after apt-xapian-index is
installed for the first time. Rebuilding in background means that when
the installation is finished and we're back to the package manager, the
data will be almost readily available, instead of having to look at a
progress bar for a minute or two.

You're right here, I had forgot to nice it. I've fixed that in git.

update-apt-xapian-index --stop to stop a running background indexer is
certainly a good idea: I've added it to the todo list (bug#TODO-TO-BE-ASSIGNED).

Restarting it is just a matter of running update-apt-xapian-index again.

I don't mind to use triggers, but I understand that they are only run at
the end of the installation, so it would defeat the idea to start it
soon so that at the end of the installation it's almost done.

Or is there a way to start triggers sooner?

Indeed. It could still be useful in other cases, but not for pbuilder.

It seems that the best way so far is to check policy-rc.d. I've never
used it, nor I found documentation about how to query it, so I inferred
from invoke-rc.d source code. If you confirm me the code snippet above
on how to query it, I'll be happy to make an upload right away.

Sounds like the EeePC has some very weird hotkeys -- last time I checked
an AC adapter wasn't a key. :-) It does sound like we need to filter
this out. We already needed to do some other weird stuff for EeePCs, so
it isn't going to be a big deal to fix this up as well.

Yes, adobe Flash makes Epiphany crash. Due to the crappiness of the
plugins interface, it is not easy to tell that a crash occurred in a
plugin, so we’re basically screwed.

I can only recommend you to use swfdec instead, it is the only Flash
plugin that works fine with Epiphany.

Alternatively, if you only use it for watching Youtube videos, there are
much better alternatives:
  * use the totem youtube plugin (included in the totem-plugins
package)
  * use the epiphany video downloader extension:

You can do this but you will then miss further upgrades.
The package provides a simple script to enable/disable extensions, much like
for apache's modules. Using it, you simply have to do:
  mwenext Cite.php

I think there is even a manpage for this script :)

I don't get this bug with the current 4.3 from SVN, so this has either
been fixed or has been introduced by a Debian-specific patch. I'll
leave it to doko.

Bug#511044: clean-patched depends on configure-stamp

2009-02-23 Thread Sven Mueller
Unfortunately, as far as I recall, simply dropping configure-stamp from
the clean-patched target was basically prohibiting the (policy mandated)
ability to run "debian/rules clean" to get back from any state of the
build tree to one which was equivalent to the pristine unpacked source
(i.e. unpacked of orig.tar.gz and patch from with diff.gz applied),
basically giving you the option to build twice in a row without first
unpacking the source again.

Anyway, this might get fixed with the removal of our huge patch of the
upstream build system (basically running autotools in preparation of a
sourceful upload instead of running them during the build process).

Duncan: This is for you to keep in mind while doing the 2.3 stuff:
Since you already removed the autoconf patch and are running the
autotools instead during build, please check wether you can actually do
a "debian/rules clean" and get back to a state where no modifications
are left in the build tree except for the removal of autogenerated files.

Regards,
Sven

Bug#516659: ITP: w3bfukk0r -- scan webservers for hidden directories (forced browsing)

Since there are still a lot of people taking names a bit too
serious (the name is meant as a joke) another ITP for this
was already rejected some time ago as Joerg stated.

I tried to discuss this on -devel some time ago but there
was no useful reaction on this:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2006/11/msg00566.html

So if you want this in Debian you need to rename it.

Cheers
Nico

Bug#510884: forgot something

2009-02-23 Thread thejunk . b
Not sure that this is the right place to note this.
The fact that bastille is broken is not being reproted by apt-listbugs. I had
installed bastille discovered the problem, checked and discovered that I had
not installed apt-listbugs on this box yet, installed apt-listbugs,
uninstalled bastille, later reinstall bastille = no bug report on bastille.

For what it is worth.
