Bug#330907: gnome-pty-helper foo

2008-12-30 Thread Paul Szabo
On 12 Oct 2005 (a long time ago!) I wrote:

> I have not yet found any uses for utmp/wtmp ...

I found a (wrongful) use for it recently, /bin/login relies on ut_line
and chowns that to the user, see

  http://bugs.debian.org/505271

That is "not this bug", as this allows us to fake ut_host only...

Ok.

Please note that when you tell the BTS that a bug is fixed in a
particular version, as far as I know you *must* use a version number
that is present in the Debian changelog. The BTS uses changelog ancestry
to decide which versions are still affected, it does *not* compare the
version numbers and declare that "everything higher than X is fixed".
Hence, if "4.3.9" does not appear in zsh's debian/changelog (and it
doesn't), this bug will not be regarded as fixed in 4.3.9-1 by the BTS.

Incidentally, 4.3.9-1 is not built for my architecture yet, but I've
verified that 4.3.6-7 does not exhibit this problem either, so I've gone
ahead and marked as fixed there.

If you've closed other bugs using "4.3.9" as a string, you may want to
fix them to use 4.3.9-1 instead.

Thanks for your work,

Bug#431485: vnc4server: stalls (100% cpu utilization) occasionally.

2008-12-30 Thread Ola Lundqvist
Hi Timo

The best is the following message from Yaroslav and its thread:
http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-bugs-dist@lists.debian.org/msg516498.html

There is a lot of ifdefs so any of them could probably be changed.

You could try to call martScheduleStopTimer() from within gdb to see
if that can help you out of the situation. At least to see if this is
the problem again.

Hey this is the same bug report... :-)

Best regards,

// Ola

Yes, I've the same problem with 2.6.26-1-amd64 (Debian made). Alsa doesn't
store the sound level.
With 2.6.24, it's ok : the sound level is right after the boot without
manually intervention.

Bug#502333: grub-pc: Search uuid in LVM crashes the bootloader

2008-12-30 Thread Marcus Better
found 502333 1.96+20080724-12
severity 502333 grave
thanks

I just hit this, it rendered my system unbootable. Raising severity
accordingly.

The system is a Thinkpad T61. It has been working just fine, with no
significant recent configuration changes. The grub version was untouched
since six weeks (upgraded from -11 to -12), and since then I've
installed and removed kernels and rebooted several times. I have not
touched the grub configuration in between.

Yesterday I installed a new kernel (2.6.28), and on the next boot, Grub
started immediately rebooting after displaying the "Welcome to Grub!"
message.

Commenting out all three "search" commands in /boot/grub/grub.cfg fixed
the problem.

Cheers,

Marcus

Hello again,

now I manually ran rsyslogd reload in the server and I managed to
crash rsyslog and here's the last lines of the debug output. Hopefully
this helps. This happened when I just ran "/etc/init.d/rsyslogd

This is not order of the same version, but the different versions. Declined.

Yes, this is true. Retitled the bug.

It doesn't crash for me with 4.3.6, but I'd be more confortable if
someone looked at the backtrace or changelog to make sure it was
addressed and is not simply hidden by random other code changes.

Correct. I did not realize it was the responsability of the
application to do the full linking and provide libraries for the
missing symbols.

For instance dicomscope needs libdcmtk1-dev, but also libssl-dev &
libxml2-dev to be able to do link to -lxml2 and -lcrypto.

Sorry for the noise :)

Sorry for the late reply.

After upgrading all libraries to the latest testing versions the problem
has gone.

Thus, I assume that the cause was libpango.

Ok. I am doing that upstream.
This is the best way to avoid the pitfalls of the ANSI C strict aliasing rules.
These stupid rules basically prevent us from accessing
an arbitrary pointer using a void* type.
I wonder why they did not handle the case of void* pointers
in the rules. I did not find any explanation online...

I don't observe that with 4.3.9-dev-1-cvs1210

And I can see all the shells behaving the same. Am I missing
something again?

Well, it does return a status, but it also leaves a job stopped
in background.

When one runs:

cmd1; cmd2

he may intend that to be a little script of two commands.

If one expects to terminate that little script (which zsh,
ksh, pdksh, ash do), one may expect (1) above as well, that is
 to stop that little script.

On the other end, 2 makes even more sense because you'd expect

cmd1; cmd2
to be the same as
cmd1
cmd2

And according to SUSv4, those are two jobs.

According to SUSv4, a job is a shell pipeline. And:

SUSv4> pipeline : pipe_sequence
SUSv4> | Bang pipe_sequence
SUSv4>  ;
SUSv4> pipe_sequence: command
SUSv4> | pipe_sequence '|' linebreak command
SUSv4>  ;
SUSv4> command : simple_command
SUSv4> | compound_command
SUSv4> | compound_command redirect_list
SUSv4> | function_definition

So, in the case of { cmd1; cmd2; }, we've got one job, so one
would expect to stop the whole job.

But then, in "cmd1; cmd2", according to SUSv4 again,
should only terminate cmd1 as bash does and run cmd2... so
there's a consistency problem here.

Bug#448771: memtest86+: Bug's still in Lenny...

2008-12-30 Thread Jan Heitkötter
Package: memtest86+
Version: 2.01-1.1
Followup-For: Bug #448771

GRUB's bootup menu does still not include memtest86+ after installation.
Running update-grub manually fixes the problem.

Lenny looks great and I think it would be nice if this bug be solved
before release.

Which property of the Debian init.d scripts made heartbeat not like
the init.d scripts? I ask because it might be easier to get such
properties changed if we have a good explanation on why it should
change and how it affect admins badly.

2008-12-30 Thread Jörg Wunderlich-Pfeiffer
Package: libphonon-dev
Version: 4:4.2.0-2
Severity: normal

The header files for phonon can not be found in '/usr/include/qt/Phonon' but in
'/usr/include/KDE/Phonon'. This leads to compiler
errors if you try to compile a project that uses phonon. A good example for
this are the examples from the QT documentation.

A symbolic link created durring instalation of this package would be nice.

The curse of post-midnight sending patches had me attach a broken
version, though, because I had only updated the binaries after the
initial compile.

Sorry about all the ill attempts, here is the hopefully final thing.

Bug#502876: patch for unix domain socket support

2008-12-30 Thread Ola Lundqvist
Thanks a lot!

Patch will be applied when lenny is out of the deep freeze and after a check
from me.

Do not worry about portability. This software is only supposed to run on
Debian. :-) It must of course work with servers on windows but I assume
your patch will not affect that.

Best regards,

// Ola

Looks like it's apt-get.

I've not reproduced the error with the extra strace, but I did get an
strace for the invocation corresponding to the one in my previous mail and
it is sufficiently similar to narrow down the problem.

Full strace attached; here are the most relevant bits.

apt-get gets called and gets PID 24406

This option was removed from kernel in 2.6.12, but there is a new possibility
for computers with short 40 wire
IDE cables to have UDMA100.

One could add it to the array of such devices. Here is the patch I use for
2.6.26:

AFAIK it will be included in next kernel version (2.6.28 ?).
Therefore I changed the bug severity to wishlist.
Should it be reassigned to a more recent linux-source version?

Feel free to close it if it is included into kernel.

Bye,

Erik

Bug#510190: lintian: missing-dep-for-interpreter confused by unusual layout

2008-12-30 Thread Neil Williams
Package: lintian
Version: 2.1.3
Severity: normal

I'm designing a fairly unusual package which contains the source to
build another package as well as scripts and other files for the main
package. Therefore, /usr/share/foo/ contains a debian/ directory with
debian/rules and postinst files as well as a copyright, control etc.
;-) (The built package is entirely free software but cannot be uploaded
to Debian as it does non-Policy stuff with unrelated packages.) Yes,
embedded stuff can get a little weird at times.

The main package (the outer package) is to be installed on a server
that builds, maintains and updates a repository of packages for
machines running the Grip flavour of Emdebian. In order to work
around bugs as they appear (and during times when such bugs cannot
be fixed, e.g. during release freezes), Grip provides for a helper
package - grip-config - which only exists inside the Grip repository
created by the main package. When grip-config needs to be updated,
the main package containing the source is updated and the admin can
build the grip-config package and update the repository.

Rather than require the debian/ directory for grip-config to be checked
out of Emdebian SVN, I thought I'd add the entire package build metadata
into the server-side package and update the server package when the
helper package needs an update. In practice, the server side package
will need more frequent updates than the helper package anyway.

The server-side package depends on dpkg-dev and lintian complains:

E: emdebian-grip-server: missing-dep-for-interpreter make => make |
build-essential (./usr/share/emdebian-tools/grip-config/debian/rules)
N:
N:You used an interpreter for a script that is not in an essential
N:package. In most cases, you will need to add a Dependency on the
package
N:that contains the interpreter. If the dependency is already
present,
N:please file a bug against Lintian with the details of your package
so
N:that its database can be updated.
N:
N:In some cases a weaker relationship, such as Suggests or
Recommends,
N:will be more appropriate.
N:
N:Severity: important; Certainty: possible

dpkg-dev depends on make and Recommends build-essential.

I'm expecting to use lndir or similar to create a writeable directory
containing the relevant build files for grip-config, use
dpkg-buildpackage -uc- us and then include the generated .changes file
directly into the repository maintained by emdebian-grip-server and
remove the build directory. This could become a script within
emdebian-grip-server itself in due course.

I appreciate this is an unusual situation, but could dpkg-dev be
accepted by lintian as providing the relevant interpreter for
debian/rules when installed in /usr/share/ ?

madwifi source code hasn't changed in 18 months: works perfectly under

fails miserably under 2.6.26-1-686

Bug#505270:

2008-12-30 Thread Tim Richardson
v 03.13 shows the same behaviour as 0.3.12. That is, splashy doesn't
work with the same error messages.

Also, the /tmp/directfbrc hack fixes it just the same.

I wonder why there was so much confidence that a fix was found. Have the
developers managed to reproduce the bug yet on their own systems?
Unfortunately, I can't get a virtual machine to show this bug, only my
three real machines.

I'd be more than happy to test any proposed fixes before they are
packaged. I'm trying to follow development via the mailing list, now I
will try to learn IRC.

If the Lenny deep freeze is just around the corner, I suggest using my
mysterious fix (the /tmp/directfbfc fix documented earlier in this bug
report) while we work out what is really happening because at least then
this bug could be closed.

Could you please clarify what you tried? I get different

or
echo 1; sleep 10; echo 2

Bug#510189: whohas: Wrong URL for FreeBSD ports

2008-12-30 Thread Evgeni Golov
Package: whohas
Version: 0.21-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Searching for pokerth with whohas gives the following result:
http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/pds.cgi?ports/www/pokerth
But pokerth is a game, thus located in ports/games/pokerth.
The attached patch fixes the issue for me.
However, I think linking to pds.cgi is not good, as it does not
carry too much information about the port. IMHO
http://cvsweb.FreeBSD.org/ports/games/pokerth would be better.
Just drop the following line from the patch, to achieve this:
$url =~ s,http://cvsweb.FreeBSD.org/,http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/pds.cgi?,i;

Regards
Evgeni

This is not such a nice answer, don't you think? :)

The debate about where to submit this kind of bug report is a long
standing one, but there is nothing wrong in having bugs in the Debian
BTS which are just proxies for upstream bug reports. It might help
other Debian users in discovering that this has already been reported.

Cheers.

Here you seem to be wrong, though, since...

I can confirm this and thus reassign the bug to the cvs package.

Bug#510193: bash: Default .bashrc breaks mc prompt

2008-12-30 Thread Andrey
Package: bash
Version: 3.2-4
Severity: normal

Current /etc/skel/.bashrc makes GNU Midnight Commander prompt under
XTerm (and, supposedly, under many other X terminals) unusable, as it
is not updated but rather appended to upon directory change. Also, it
starts with a parasitic ';0'.

The following patch solves the problem for me:

*** /etc/skel/.bashrc 2008-05-12 23:02:41.0 +0400

I took the new version from my own .bashrc, which I think has been
copied from Debian-supplied /etc/skel/.bashrc some time ago. I'm not
sure though.

I'm ready to provide any additional info,
Andrey

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend/criticize. But it seemed weird to me that
the submitter was aware that the problem was upstream, and yet submitted
a bugreport against the Debian package. I was really expecting an answer.

yep - ath_hal was not being loaded up (automatically), under 2.6.26,
but it is under 2.6.18. how odd. so, although i am adding ath_hal to
/etc/modules, it's kinda damn awkward and a n00b would be utterly
stumped by this one.

Bug#510196: seg fault with 'grep -i' on multiple files.

2008-12-30 Thread Kyrian
Package: grep
Version: 2.5.1.ds2-6
Severity: important

This is in the context of grepping maildir email message text files.

Use of -i on multiple files appears to break things:

u...@host:/my/dir/kyrian$ grep -i -A1 -m1 ^X-orenet-MailScanner-SpamCheck:
344251. 344254. 344258.
344251.:X-orenet-MailScanner-SpamCheck: not spam (whitelisted),
Segmentation fault

Without -i the same thing works as expected:

u...@host:/my/dir/kyrian$ grep -A1 -m1 ^X-orenet-MailScanner-SpamCheck:
344251. 344254. 344258.

I've looked at an strace & ltrace of what is going on, but can't see anything
obvious there.

Bug#510195: linux-image-2.6.26-1-powerpc: macmini g4 1.07ghz does not boot with 2.6.26-1-powerpc

2008-12-30 Thread Marko Kaiser
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-powerpc
Version: 2.6.26-12
Severity: normal

 Hi there,

I reported this already long time ago but recent kernel images in sid show this
error again:
After inserting the module eeprom during boot process I get the message

"PMU not reposnding (!ACK)" after a timeout period of at least 10 seconds or so

and then the kernel stops booting.
A code review in the sources of kernel 2.6.28 shows that this message is
displayed in the function wait_for_ack in drivers/macintosh/via_pmu.c line 1131
ffs.

I already reset nvram and pmu but this does not help.
Perhaps upstream can take care of this.

Kind regards,
Marko

Bug#252164: Junge geile Teens, wollen volles Verguege

2008-12-30 Thread Nicolette
Hallo Maenner!

With "dpkg -s lib[TAB]", the problem is with
_deb_packages_update_installed and the variable
_deb_packages_cache_installed, even though I suppose that the
other functions are affected by the same bug. Even if I add

  if [[ -z "$_deb_packages_cache_installed" ]]
  then
unset _deb_packages_cache_installed
  fi

in _deb_packages_update_installed, the variable eventually gets
defined, and the bug still occurs. Perhaps this is due to the
cachevar=_deb_packages_cache_installed. But I don't know how the
function should end when the cache couldn't be filled up.

There's still the possibility to replace

  ${+_deb_packages_cache_installed} -eq 0

by

  -n "$+_deb_packages_cache_installed"

but this isn't the best solution.

Bug#510201: bash: command-not-found package should work out of the box

2008-12-30 Thread Andrey
Package: bash
Version: 3.2-4
Severity: normal

command-not-found is a very useful Debian package which installs a
bash plugin similar to bash-completion. However, currently the
command-not-found package doesn't work out of the box due to lack of
support from the bash package.

The following changes will solve the problem:

1) Remove the following code from /etc/bash.bashrc:

  # if the command-not-found package is installed, use it
  if [ -x /usr/lib/command-not-found ]; then
  function command_not_found_handle {
  # check because c-n-f could've been removed in the meantime
  if [ -x /usr/lib/command-not-found ]; then
 /usr/bin/python /usr/lib/command-not-found -- $1
 return $?
  else
 return 127
  fi
  }
  fi

Reason: the code above has no effect on (most) Debian systems
because the command-not-found executable is installed to a different
  location (/usr/share/command-not-found/command-not-found). The
correct code is provided by /etc/bash_command_not_found from the
command-not-found package itself. It is proposed to use the latter
  code (see 2).

2) Add the following code to /etc/skel/.bashrc:

  # enable command-not-found hook
  if [ -f /etc/bash_command_not_found ]; then
  . /etc/bash_command_not_found
  fi

Reason: this will actually trigger the (correct) code in
/etc/bash_command_not_found (currently it is not used at all), and
do so on per-user basis (just like bash-completion works).

I'm ready to provide any additional info,
Andrey

Bug#510203: Ubuntu: shows only the earliest version

2008-12-30 Thread Steve Cotton
Package: whohas
Version: 0.21-3
Severity: normal

The web-scraper algorithm only finds the earliest version of each
Ubuntu package.

st...@tsunami:~$ whohas -d Ubuntu tmw
Ubuntu tmw 0.0.23-2ub
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/tmw
Ubuntu tmw-data 0.0.23-2ub

Ubuntu tmw-dbg 0.0.24.1-1
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/tmw-dbg
Ubuntu tmw-music 0.0.20-1
http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/tmw-music

The tmw and tmw-data packages actually have
gutsy 0.0.23-2ubuntu1 (no tmw-dbg in Gutsy)
hardy 0.0.24.1-1
intrepid 0.0.26-2
jaunty 0.0.27-1

The scraper code is copied between Debian and Ubuntu. On Ubuntu
it does a single request for packages in suite "all", while in
Debian it does separate requests for each of
my @dists = ( 'stable', 'testing', 'unstable', 'experimental');
which is why the Debian behaviour is different.

I hope there's a better way to get this information, instead of
page-scraping, but don't know it to suggest it.

Package: ldm
Version: 2:2.0.27-1

ldm depends on gtk2-engines-clearlooks. However, this package exists no
more, since the theme has been merged to base GTK+ engines package

reference gtk2-engines instead of gtk2-engines-clearlooks.

Bug#510205: buffer overflow in libaudiofile

2008-12-30 Thread Max Kellermann
Package: libaudiofile0
Version: 0.2.6-6
Severity: critical

Today, the Music Player Daemon project received a bug report from
Anton Khirnov: MPD crashed when attempting to play a WAV file. "file"
says:

RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, Microsoft ADPCM, stereo 44100
 Hz

The MPD bug report: http://musicpd.org/mantis/view.php?id=1915

The test file: http://filebin.ca/meqmyu/max_theme.wav

Turns out that this is a bug in libaudiofile. When attempting to
decode the file, libaudiofile writes past the buffer in msadpcm.c:194

  code = *encoded >> 4;
  newSample = ms_adpcm_decode_sample(state[0], code,
  coefficient[0]);
  *decoded++ = newSample;

Valgrind output:

 ==4680==by 0xAA595AC: clone (in /usr/lib/debug/libc-2.7.so)

A quick look at the code revealed that the allocated buffer size
depended on the following formula:

  bufsize = outc->nframes * _af_format_frame_size(&outc->f, AF_TRUE);

outc->nframes basically comes from _AF_ATOMIC_NVFRAMES (1024), because
the msadpcm module does not implement the max_pull callback. This
results in a 4096 byte allocation in modules.c:2539 (frame size is 4).

In ms_adpcm_decode_block(), msadpcm->samplesPerBlock is set to 2036
(unverified value from the input file header). outputLength is 8144,
which obviously does not fit into the allocated 4096 byte buffer.

I could reproduce the same crash with "normalize-audio max_theme.wav".
The real crash happens after closing the file, probably due to heap
corruption. valgrind notices the problem before the crash actually
occurs.

Severity "critical" because this is may be used for a remote DoS
attack on software like MPD. I did not investigate whether it is
possible to inject code this way. Chances are good, since arbitrary
amounts of heap can be overwritten.

Both Debian Etch and Lenny are affected.

Solution: don't use libaudiofile. Change libaudiofile to allocate the
correct buffer size. Add buffer size checks to libaudiofile.

Regards,
Max Kellermann

Bug#510208: xserver-xorg-video-ati: freezes/crashes on startup after kernel upgrade 2.6.22->26

2008-12-30 Thread stefan schwarzer
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.9.0-1+lenny4
Severity: important

I am running testing on a Fujitsu-Siemens E8010 (Radeon Mobility 9600 M10) with
kernel 2.6.22-3 (and-2). I have so far used video-ati 1:6.8.0 (pinned). After
upgrade to 2.6.26-1 kdm would freeze before showing the login screen. After
X server (Radeon) upgrade to 1:6.9.0 symptoms were the same. I made some
additional tests (using /etc/init.d/kdm start or xinit) and X would leave the
sceen black (with some green
stripe pattern across the top part), sometimes with cursor visible frozen or
moving very slowly, sometimes with the fan coming up after a few seconds
possibly indicating a high CPU load. I cannot switch to console windows.
I cannot tell how much of the kernel is still alive, since the system is not
connected to something that I could use for login. However, I do not find
anything of concern in /var/log/messages after system restart.

Behavior is (mostly?) configuration independent, I had a customized
configuration before the update, now the one created by dpkg-reconfigure,
later I added a line to enforce 16 bit depth default without effect.
All combinations of server/confguration file work (as far asI can tell)
flawlessly with kernel 2.6.22-2 and 2.6.22-3, taken from testing
repos some time ago.

Bug#510209: acpi-support: No way to disable screen locking in KDE

2008-12-30 Thread Brian Nelson
Package: acpi-support
Version: 0.109-10
Severity: normal

When I close my laptop lid, my laptop always gets locked, and there's no
way I can find to disable this behavior. It looks like what's happening
is that the /usr/share/acpi-support/screenblank script is run, which in
turn runs the command "dcop --session "$session" --all-users kdesktop
KScreensaverIface lock" with no consideration of the LOCK_SCREEN
setting. Note that the script does honor LOCK_SCREEN if xscreensaver is
running.

Please modify the script to honor LOCK_SCREEN, or provide some way of
disabling screen locking when closing the lid when in KDE.

 Okay, here is http://web.archive.org/web/20021122152220/http://nihonlinux.jp/

Missed this one. Thanks.

Thanks. I prefer to create the directory during installation. This
limit the patch of kolab_bootstrap.

This is corrected in SVN, I will upload snapshot soon.

Bug#430826: sudo-ldap: should use alternative config file

2008-12-30 Thread Adrian Bridgett
Update on 30/12/2008 for 1.6.9p17-1

the build rules have:
--with-ldap-conf-file=/etc/sudo-ldap.conf \
but that's in the _non_ LDAP bit :-(

the LDAP bit has:
--with-ldap-conf-file=/etc/ldap/ldap.conf \

I suggest that the first line is removed and that the second is
updated to /etc/sudo-ldap.conf.

I'd also suggest that adding this to the postinst would be good as it
will allow it to work better out of the box.

# create symlink from new filename if required
if (! -e "/etc/sudo-ldap.conf") {
  system("ln -s ldap/ldap.conf /etc/sudo-ldap,conf");
}

If /dev/pts is mounted early, for example in udev script of initramfs, startpar
concurrency is possible in runlevel S.

Bug#510211: console-setup breaks display of splashy

2008-12-30 Thread Mathieu Parent
Package: console-setup
Version: 1.28
Severity: minor

While using splashy, during boot, the display flickers then become
entirely black except the splashy progress bar.

If I skip the console-setup init script, the problem doesn't happen.

I have tested different "console-setup/fontface" without success.

This is eye-candy, and so, minor.

Regards

Mathieu

I did not observe this problem when using a new upstream version of startpar

Many thanks for investigating and the detailed report. I'll try to get

Bug#510196: Further investigation.

2008-12-30 Thread Kyrian
I ran a test on some plain text files to try and diagnose this
further, although on a different Debian Etch machine.

Firstly, one line files:

a.txt:word 1
b.txt:word 2
c.txt:word 3

WORKS:

kyr...@blackwidow:/tmp$ grep -i -A1 -m1 ^word *.txt
a.txt:word 1
--
b.txt:word 2
--
c.txt:word 3
kyr...@blackwidow:/tmp$

Then when I add some extra lines to all of the files at the same time
and try the same it segfaults.

Removing the extra lines from the c.txt file still results in a crash.

Removing the extra lines from the c.txt and b.txt files still results
in a crash.

Removing the extra lines from the a.txt, b.txt and c.txt files still
results in normal behaviour once more.

If I add a second line to any one of files on its own, I get the crash back.

The crash also occurs if you use "grep -r" on a directory containing
those files, instead of "*.txt".

Hope that helps.

K.
