yes. I tested it some minutes ago.

kde-open is in the kdebase-runtime package which is from KDE 4 and is in
lenny and sid.

Bug#502858: aptitude: changelog entry malformed

This part of the policy is a "should" and not a "must". I'll leave it
to the package maintainer, but I suppose this bug is not "serious". It
would be made "must" (post #489460 which is not yet released).

> A malformed changelog entry can cause problems for any tools

Since the above is a "should" and not a "must", tools doing this must be
prepared [1] to encounter bad entries.

[1]
http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/a/aptitude/current/changelog#versionversion0.4.11.9-1lenny1

One less RC bug if you or Daniel downgrade this :-)

Giridhar

ARGH. Thanks. Why do I do such a stupid mistake once again?

OK, so I'll do it that way (and try to get it into lenny)

Hi Tom,

dpkg -l does not look necessarily over all the packages, it can miss
some of them. To search packages use apt-cache search.

Both what?

Someone who installs 2.6.26-1-xen-amd64 in a Lenny domU with the Lenny
version of grub would end up with a menu.lst which did not contain this
kernel, which would be incorrect.

I think in an earlier version of the patch which became the current
stuff had a magic variable thing. I think I'd be happy with a
commented-out-magic IFF there is absolutely no way to make it work by
default.

If you are the admin of a domU with no access rights to dom0 (common
with hosting providers) then I think the two are equivalent.

I tested the mailto: part, which works as expected but the webpage part
has problems with kde-open.

I would suggest to use (removed kde-open for webpages):

# special handling for mailto: uris
if echo $1 | grep '^mailto:' > /dev/null; then
  if which kde-open; then
kde-open "$1" &
  else
kmailservice "$1" &

else

Tested now with (vanilla Debian) 2.6.25-2-686. Cores are dumped as
should. So problem seems to arise for the first time on 2.6.26-1.

Those fields are not accepted by dpkg contrary to the Vcs-* ones. So they
shouldn't be documented IMO.

And I don't like the idea to clutter the control file with such upstream
information which always require an upload for any update/change. After
that you want an URL with screenshot and and and …

It is bad idea that looks good because it seems similar to the current
one. I would prefer people to work on an external repository of
meta-information about source packages: http://wiki.debian.org/CRMI

The Homepage field is the exception as it is the entry point to find out
any other upstream related information.

I suggest tagging this bug wontfix or simply closing it if the idea
doesn't get more support.

Cheers,

Bug#502908: [Pkg-cups-devel] Bug#502908: cups-client: [INTL:de] Initial German man page translation

2008-10-21 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello Helge,

thank you for working on a translation!

Helge Kreutzmann [2008-10-20 21:40 +0200]:

> If there is some schedule for uploading CUPS into Debian which I

I often upload to experimental, including it there is no problem.
Getting it to unstable and Lenny more so, it always requires asking
the release team for an exception. But translation fixes like those
are very likely to get approved. So I'll upload to unstable once the
translation is reasonably complete.

> It would be great if you could provide me with a (read only) link to a
> revision control system (git, SVN, ..)

It's mentioned in "apt-cache source cups":

  Vcs-Bzr: bzr+ssh://bzr.debian.org/pkg-cups/cups/lenny

So you can just create your own branch with

  bzr get bzr+ssh://bzr.debian.org/pkg-cups/cups/lenny

and start hacking on it. Of course you can't push, but you can put
your branch to a place like people.debian.org, or just send me diffs,
whatever you prefer.

Thanks,

Martin

I really don't think you will have success this way given:
- RedHat doesn't care about that.
- The gNewSense consider it a free license and thus most probably the FSF.

This, in addition to the -w flag, sounds like a good idea! The
question now is whether it's possible to patch the source in such
a way that the release team will let us bring it into lenny. I think
it's worth a try and I am happy to help you make it happen.

Sorry to be back again with another bug...

I can't create directories in the media library. The directory is created

Hi.

I am the new maintainer of usbmount and the udev subsystem has changed
drastically since the bug was reported. Also, I updated the package
slightly and it is now in version 0.0.16.

On Jul 18 2005, Martin Dickopp wrote:

I second the suggestion of Martin. Please, post the output here, so that
more information can be known about the behaviour of usbmount.

Also, running

udevadm test --action=add /sys/class/block/sda1

May generate very useful output. Please, substitute sda1 with the
appropriate device.

Attach here the output of the command from and we can see what are the
actions that udev is trying to perform. Please, be awarer that the
"udevadm" command above generates a lot of output.

Bug#502618: #502618: No change with scratching the disk before installing

2008-10-21 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi,

just wanna inform that now also our formerly working 32 bit machine
has that problem permanently, even after scratching the whole disk
with dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda over night before. (We formerly
suspected the previous existence of an LVM on the disk caused that
behaviour.) The strange thing stays that this and other machines
installed fine before and that the bug occurred on some machines
earlier (Friday) and others later (Monday afternoon while it worked
Monday morning).

So now _all_ of our to-be-installed systems show this behaviour,
independently of hardware or installation architecture, independently
of the previous disk content.

Which is kind of bad, because to workaround this bug now means that we
have to go back to manual installation. :-(

We also looked through all changed udebs the last two weeks on our
mirror (ftp.ch.debian.org) and checked packages.q.d.o as well as their
changelog, but none of the changes pointed into this direction.
Probably the only relevant package which changed at all during the
last weeks is partman-base (changed in Lenny as well as in Sid).

HTH.

Kind regards, Axel Beckert

Bug#502955: debian-installer: essid cannot be chosen

2008-10-21 Thread Mate Soos
Package: debian-installer
Severity: normal

There are multiple wireless spots around my house. Debian defaults to an
unsecured network(see later how I discovered this), but that network needs a
web-based login (only
available to paying customers), so it doesn't actually work. My own
wireless router works, and I have the key for it, but the installer
never actually asks for the essid, so I don't have a chance to select
it.

What is worse, is that being a sort-of-expert, I tried to get around
this using a console+iwconfig combo, but iwconfig was not available. So,
I had to do a very minimial install, then boot into bash, then set the
correct essid&key using iwconfig and then do "apt-get ...". It worked in
the end, but under "/etc/network/interfaces" debian of course put the
essid of the unsecured network (just as I suspected).

This behaviour is not correct, as I believe:
1) Wireless is getting very widespread
2) So most normal people will try to install debian through wifi
3) And most people will live next to other people, who also have wifi
4) So it is essential to be able to select the correct essid

This does not prevent them from being documented in "Best ractises" for
future use.

> And I don't like the idea to clutter the control file

1) Keeping upstream information up-to-date is a goal for every package.
And these changes are rare and permanent anough to deserve field.

2) it allow developing tools; similar to debcheckout(1)

3) it allow filing bugs: wishlist to add upstream information, bug to
report that information is out of date.

4) it improves transparency between all parties; developers and people
needing the information. You can simply:

 apt-cache show

to see what you need and quickly access what you want.

> with such upstream information which always require an upload for any
> update/change.

That is not a problem. Not even currently developers upload packages
every time e.g. "Standards-Version" changes. Updates happen naturally;
when new upstream arrives or chnages have accumulated.

> meta-information about source packages: http://wiki.debian.org/CRMI

While it sounds nice, I see problems:

1) someone has to remember "where was that place again"
2) It's inconvenient. Jump to another place? Use web interface?
2) The information is kept *separate* from the place where package is
   being developed. New developer and transfer of package related "other
   issues" that are kept somewhere else?

Separation of information is always bad and leads to "non up-to-date"
syndrom, "problems in knowledge sharing" when package change hands.

INSTEAD

It should be the other way round. The developers keep the packages up to
date as their workflow. The information is already stored in

   debian/control
   debian/copyright

Any extra place is extra work. We should also remember this:

  http://wiki.debian.org/Proposals/CopyrightFormat

SUMMARY

  Automated tools can extract the information to other places like
  http://wiki.debian.org/CRMI

Bug#502806: [Pkg-net-snmp-devel] Bug#502806: libsnmp-base: forcing perl headers in net-snmp-config --cflags breaks perl builds

Hi Marc,

In order to use a library with embedded perl, a program needs to call the
PERL_SYS_INIT3()
and PERL_SYS_TERM() macros. Those macros are defined in the perl header files.

The fact that snmpd doesn't do it right now is a different bug (#495060) though.

Bug#385372: Another attempt to close this bug (#385372 for samba)

Again, 1.5 years later, I still "deeply suspect that this bug is over for a
while and was probably
fixed during the various fixes that happened for 3.0.23d.".

Later in the bug story, Joe C.K. Yau mentioned some problems which are
probably unrelated and lead to some investigation with Steve,
concluded by "there is probably something wrong with your setup, you
should check with upstream support lists".

So, again, I suggest we close the bug...

A second issue is that CommentsTmpl is defined in the TWiki web. The reference

Severity: serious
Justification: DFSG

raff.debian.org uses a Compaq Smart 5i RAID card. A flash memory is used

I suggest that someone works with HP to get the corresponding source

I am not sure what went wrong, but I have a suspicion that
there is another kinput2-wnn that seems to be invoked from
GDM or gnome session manager(?) that interfered with
kinput2-wnn which I invoked.

I needed to invoke a separate kinpu2-wnn with a different
set of options to experiment with
key binding issues.
(Somehow I could no longer exit Japanese output by typing SHIFT+SPACE
which I used to do all the time. I now need to type CONTROL-BACKSLASH
which is awkward, and is very error-prone inside Thunderbird or
Firefox text input mode. Maybe I should report *this* issue as a
potential bug.
Entering Japanese input mode by SHIFT+SPACE and exiting the mode
by the same key combination worked like a charm for many years for me.)

Bug#502957: otrs: OTRS has no logcheck database

2008-10-21 Thread Gavin McCullagh
Package: otrs
Version: 1:1.3.3p01-4
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Logcheck is a very useful tool for monitoring the logs of a particular program.

OTRS is quite chatty in its logfile so it would be very useful to get a set of
expressions which described the "normal" logs which can be ignored so that then
OTRS's logs can be easily monitored without badgering the hell out of the
admin.
>From time to time, OTRS does spit out more important logs which are more
>easily
seen with this setup.

As I run logcheck on a server running OTRS, I've been gradually accumulating
log expressions. To get the ball rolling I thought I'd include a patch for
them.
Depending on how we'd want to do this, we could need lots of little expressions
for every possible log, or we could just simplify these down into a few
expressions with broad wildcard chunks. The patch below closes out pretty
much every normal log on our OTRS install, but I daresay with a different
config, the list would be different.

Let me know what you think,
Gavin

I don't agree that it is a good practice.

We have to keep Homepage and copyrigth up-to-date, for the rest you
propose adding that as a supplementary goal.

Yes but those tools can also be developed if the information is available
somewhere else than in the package itself.

Indeed, and this is wasted time when the person filing the bug could have
gone to the CRMI website and filled the infos by himself.

Aptitude already downloads the changelog when it wants to display it, the
same could be done for any information stored in CRMI.

You propose to clutter even more Packages/Sources files whent they are big
enough already.

It is still a problem: not up-to-date information means wrong information.
When you design something you try to avoid unnecessary delays and you aim
for the best.

> 1) someone has to remember "where was that place again"

No, the data collected would be transparently used by other applications,
the website is mainly meant to update data not to consult it.

and what's the problem here ? you also add debtags through an external
place precisely so that people other than the maintainers can help.
It's a benefit not a loss.

> Separation of information is always bad and leads to "non up-to-date"

I can assure you it's unrelated. We have non up-to-date copyright files
and watch files in Debian package and we have up-to-date debtags outside
of Debian packages.

Bug#502961: dosfstools: arm should do unaligned access

2008-10-21 Thread Matthieu CASTET
Package: dosfstools
Version: 3.0.0-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

arm should use the unaligned version of GET_UNALIGNED_W (like ia64).
Most of arm processor doesn't support unaligned access.
The kernel can emulate unaligned access, but it is slow and depends on kernel
configuration.

Thanks

Matthieu

I hope, that we only document "best practices" that are already
widely in use or when most people agree. This is not the case
here. If you find "best practices" in the developers reference
that are not widely in use and are disputed, please file a bug.

Bug#474947: the state of Bug#474947

2008-10-21 Thread A Mennucc
retitle 474947 "fix Dynamic MMaps error"
severity 474947 important
tag 474947 -unreproducible
thanks

hi bug, hi people, hi d-release

I did some study on bug 474947, that is grave/RC, and is posted against APT.

Since I was told that the APT team is understaffed, I decided to take
action myself.

---

First of all, I tried to focus the problem.

In this same bug there were reported two different issues, a "Dynamic
MMap error" and a segmentation fault; moreover some people were using
APT in Etch, and some other in Lenny.

Let's summarize it shortly.

First poster is Elliot Mitchel, in Apr 08; he is using APT 0.6.46 inside
Etch. He claims that he cannot work around a "Dynamic MMap" error; he
then sets severity to grave.
 It turns out that he is using the wrong option, he is using '-o
APT::Cache-File=2' instead of '-o APT::Cache-Limit=2' .
(And that confuses "Joe Nahmias" and me as well - the mistake is noted
by JackYF quite later). So the first report is flawed.

jasen reports a similar problem, but I don't see enough details to comment.

Then Elliott Mitchell again also posts a report about a segmentation fault.

Some months go by; in Sept. JackYF offers to help fixing the problem by
changing the code.
(Unfortunately we are already in deep freeze, and I am afraid deep
changes to APT would not be accepted by the release team.)

I did some more research around, and tests, and this is what I found out.

The default in APT (inside the code) for Cache-Limit in Lenny is 20MB ,
in Etch is 8MB .

Note also that in the Lenny release notes
http://svn.debian.org/viewsvn/ddp/manuals/branches/release-notes/lenny/en/upgrading.dbk
 it is suggested to set Cache-Limit to 1250 in case of Dynamic MMap
error.

I tested APT 0.6.46 in Etch. I tried with 3 different sources.list, see
attachment. The "fat" list is the union of all lists of all reporters
(minus obsolete and duplicates).

The two smaller files work perfectly well; the "fat" sources file does
trigger the DynamicMMap problem, that I can though work around by using
 'apt-get -o APT::Cache-Limit=1 update'

The only way to trigger a segmentation fault was instead to set
Cache-Limit to a ridiculously low value.

So my conclusion is that the forthcoming release notes do address the
problem some people may encounter in upgrading from Etch to Lenny.

I propose the attached patch, though, since it is funny to suggest a
value of 1250 (bytes) when the internal value in Lenny is 20MB.
I hope someone in the d-relase team can apply it.

Ok, this far.

Did you sync the device? From the message, it seems that some data were to
be written to the device, but the device was already gone by that time, but
I'm not a specialist on the filesystem subsystem and perhaps others could
say more about it.

OTOH, the device might have been mounted with the sync option and I don't
know how it could have happened in this latter case.

In a subsequent mount, I guess.

Ok. I'm putting here the messages from Alexandre's dmesg, so that it would
be helpful for the filesystem developers to tell us more about the
situation:

Hi,

considering this serious issue, instead of shutting down the machine which
handles two important services [0], I would rather reconfigure the machine to
use software RAID with mdadm and not using the hardware RAID card which leads
to unacceptable use of non-free software in the core of Debian buildd's.

This will inevitably lead to temporary shutdown of these two services, which
would have to be superseeded in another machine, running exclusively free
software and no non-free blobs... And this needs work by powerful
and "having-time" DD's, but freedom is maybe at that price.

 but not specify to install in debian/update-notifier.install file.

 So, see attached file. I've added patch for 4 area.
  - debian/changelog :)
  - update debian/patches/002_i18n_update.diff for ja.po
  - remove unnecessary lines from debian/patches/04_fix_gksu_usage.diff to
be enable re-build package
  - update debian/update-notifier.install to install files from debian/tmp

Does it really list mWh? Normally battery capacity is listed in mAh.

What does it list under /sys/class/power_supply?

> acpi -i prints
>  Battery 0: Charging, 25%, 01:31:20 until charged

This information is taken from /sys/class/power_supply unless you also specify
the "-p" parameter.

Bug#502963: exim4-daemon-light: Error sending mail with Apple's Mail.app to exim4 over TLS with authentication.

2008-10-21 Thread WS
Package: exim4-daemon-light
Version: 4.69-9
Severity: normal

I am trying to get Apple's Mail.app to play with exim4 on a Debian (lenny)
server.

$ dpkg -l | grep exim
ii  exim44.69-9
ii  exim4-base   4.69-9
ii  exim4-config 4.69-9
ii  exim4-daemon-light   4.69-9

I would like the laptop Mail.app lives on to use password authentication over
tls to send mail. However, it does not work.

$ cat exim4.conf.localmacros
MAIN_TLS_ENABLE = true

$ cat update-exim4.conf.conf
dc_eximconfig_configtype='smarthost'
dc_other_hostnames='fooke'
dc_local_interfaces=''
dc_readhost='fooke'
dc_relay_domains=''
dc_minimaldns='false'
dc_relay_nets='192.168.1.0/24'
dc_smarthost='machine.isp.com'
CFILEMODE='644'
dc_use_split_config='false'
dc_hide_mailname='false'
dc_mailname_in_oh='true'
dc_localdelivery='mail_spool'

In exim4.conf.template:
plain_server:
   driver = plaintext
   public_name = PLAIN
   server_condition = "${if
crypteq{$auth3}{${extract{1}{:}{${lookup{$auth2}lsearch{CONFDIR/passwd}{$value}{*:*}{1}{0}}"
   server_set_id = $auth2
   server_prompts = :
   .ifndef AUTH_SERVER_ALLOW_NOTLS_PASSWORDS
   server_advertise_condition = ${if eq{$tls_cipher}{}{}{*}}
   .endif

$ cat passwd
user:310rn3lrrprLr

This is generated using:
htpasswd -nd user

In mainlog I see:
2008-10-18 17:35:39 no IP address found for host laptop (during SMTP connection
from [192.168.1.41])
2008-10-18 17:35:49 TLS error on connection from ([192.168.1.41])
[192.168.1.41] (gnutls_handshake): Error in the push function.

'ping laptop' shows there is an IP address for 'laptop' (it comes from dnsmasq
on my dhcp server I think).

$ ping -c1 laptop
PING laptop (192.168.1.41) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from laptop (192.168.1.41): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.89 ms

1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 1.898/1.898/1.898/0.000 ms

However, to be sure, I add an appropriate entry in /etc/hosts and the IP
message goes away but the push error stays.

Turning off password auth but still using tls creates the same error.
Turning off password auth and not using tls works just fine and email sends.

I spoke to the exim guys and they say it is most likely to be a gnutls/debian
bug and to post here. I have tried using another client (another Debian box)
and I get a different error which is fixed if I reduced the number of certs in
ca-certificates. However, this does not fix the Mail.app error.

Mail.app uses tls just fine to get the mail in the first place over IMAP.

May I ask how many computers does the project debian use, which have
closed source BIOSes (or equivalent)?
Should those machines be shutdown until there is enough coreboot
supported [1] hardware available?
And, may I ask an other question:
should we really consider ourselves free, while we are just using free
software, but not hardware?
Should we stop using computers of which we don't have the projects, of
which we don't know the internal structure?
Should we stop using computers at all?

This is just getting ludicrous.

Can we just keep to the sensible dividing line that code executing on
the computer's main CPU, _under_ the operating system (not BIOS / SMI)
should be "free" to whatever divined standard.

Peripheral hardware isn't designed for you to run arbitrary code on its
CPU, and the fact it requires a firmware blob uploading is merely an
implementation detail. (GPUs are borderline of course.)

Having no source-code for firmware is hardly that different to having a
completely open-source driver which does un-told magic by poking
un-documented registers in a complex chip. Think Intel graphics before
they released documentation for (some of) their chips.

Prompting for ESSID is available in expert mode of the installer. See

which suggest that such prompting should be done in standard more.

Version: 0.9.6-3
Tags: patch

It would be great in backupninja supported customising mysqldump options
without having to 'fork' the supplied handler.

The defaults supplied are somewhat understandable but unfortunate - for
example, adopting extended inserts reduces the time taken to dump and
insert, as well as I/O space and time. For regular snapshot backups, I
may also wish to not lock the tables so that the service is not paused.
(etc.)

My current solution is simply to apply:

 -  DUMP_BASE="$MYSQLDUMP $defaultsfile --lock-tables --complete-insert
   --add-drop-table [..]"
 +  DUMP_BASE="$MYSQLDUMP $defaultsfile"

to /usr/share/backupninja/mysql and specify my desired settings in the
backup user's ~/.my.cf -- the command line arguments would otherwise
override this file.

However, adding an option to the mysql helper to modify the mysqldump
options is probably a cleaner way. First stab at a patch attached.

Bug#502967: CVE-2008-4577/CVE-2008-4578: security problems with the ACL plugin

2008-10-21 Thread Steffen Joeris
Package: dovecot-common
Severity: important
Tags: security

Hi,
the following CVE (Common Vulnerabilities & Exposures) ids were
published for dovecot.

CVE-2008-4577[0]:
| The ACL plugin in Dovecot before 1.1.4 treats negative access rights
| as if they are positive access rights, which allows attackers to
| bypass intended access restrictions.

CVE-2008-4578[1]:
| The ACL plugin in Dovecot before 1.1.4 allows attackers to bypass
| intended access restrictions by using the "k" right to create
| unauthorized "parent/child/child" mailboxes.

The upstream announcement can be found here[2]. I don't think this warrants
a DSA for etch and for lenny it could be fixed via unstable migration.

If you fix the vulnerabilities please also make sure to include the
CVE ids in your changelog entry.

Cheers
Steffen

Agreed, though it does not restrain us from asking for free firmware.

If I recall well, one of the origin of the GNU fondation was the fact that
having free drivers alowed one to actually *fix* issues he may have with his
*own* hardware. Then, the very same reasoning can apply to binary firmware.

So, yes this is a brand new issue, that comes from the new way of designing
hardware. But that doesn't mean we should give up and remain behind the line
that was drawn 20 (or so) years ago. We now should also ask for open source
firmware for the very same reason that this huge effort toward free drivers
was done. If we did it for drivers, there's no reason we can't suceed for
firmwares.

With firmwares you need much more than the source code for it in order
to make changes:
- documentation on how the hardware works internally
- documentation of what you are allowed to safely do from firmware
(without damaging the hardware)
- the tools used to compile the firmware, which are not necesarely open
source or free

If a vendor wants to provide that fine, but just because they don't it
doesn't mean we should stop using that
piece of hardware.

Bug#478263: xdm: does not allow to log in when no password is set

I can reproduce this problem.

I can log in with no problem using login(8) on the tty, so I tried

cp --backup /etc/pam.d/{login,xdm}
/etc/init.d/xdm

This didn't help. Nor does anything useful turn up in /var/log, even
with "debug" on all pam_unix.so entries in /etc/pam.d/common-*.

Tue Oct 21 17:08:51 2008 xdm error (pid 12858):

This is because the moment xdm asks for a password it already failed
to log you in. It should verify that you actually do have a password
before asking for one.

Thanks

Those messages are actually coming from LessTif rather than Xpdf. The

all (there are separate bug reports about them).

Bug#502970: xserver-xorg-core: please add Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" to Device section of xorg.conf

2008-10-21 Thread Noel Köthe
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.4.2-7
Severity: normal

Hello,

I'm a happy user of xorg on lenny with the xorg.conf below. I have to
add manually the "AccelMethod" line because rotation didn't worked correctly
which I reported upstream https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18087
and quickly got the respond that I have to add the missing EXA.

To fix the upstream reported bug for Debian for everyone the xorg.conf created
by the xorg packages could add the AccelMethod Option.
This could be done for many drivers which are reported as solid on
http://wiki.x.org/wiki/ExaStatus

Thank you.

Regards.

No idea. I don't know anyone working on that. In the mean time we have
Mole (http://wiki.debian.org/Mole) and Ultimate Debian Database
(http://wiki.debian.org/UltimateDebianDatabase) that appeared and that
should be taken into account too.

The CRMI was a proposal discussed at debconf and proposed by myself as
part of my work in the QA team and related to my experience with the PTS.
But then I lost interest in coding it but I'm still convinced that we need
something like that.

Well copyright info has to stay in the package for obvious reasons…
standardizing that information only gives benefits.

Right. And the PTS and packages.debian.org.

And you got the same answer there (by NoahSlater): it doesn't look right
to put that information in the copyright file either.

Oops. Seems I mistakenly assumed it had been fixed (based on my earlier

In recompense, I offer to NMU this fix; I've also updated the
diagnostic warning to more accurate.

I will do this this evening unless the maintainer shouts/gets there
before me.

A patch to suppress the WARN information will be in 2.6.28 when the
user does something stupid (i.e., yank out a USB stick without
unmounting the filesystem first). This was done mainly to suppress
the "scary message" in dmesg, which on distributions that support
uploading such messages to http://www.kerneloops.org for analysis, was
cluttering the reports.

However, the patch does not make it any *safer* to uncerimoniously
yank out a USB stick without unmounting it first. This can still lead
to data loss, unless you're *sure* that no process is writing to the
stick and you issued the sync command, and you know enough time has
passed so all of the data has been written to the USB stick.

> > > [39071.160167] Buffer I/O error on device sda1, logical block 1545

These errors you'd still get, since these messages are the sound of
users' data being irretrivably being lost.

> Well, it is a bug. It just needs more investigation to see where the bug
> lies.

I don't know if you would call it a bug or not. Fundamentally,
yanking out a USB stick without unmounting it first is dangerous, and
can lead to data loss. Printing the stack trace when this happens
implies it's a problem which can be fixed by a developer, so perhaps
that could be considered a bug, and in any case, that should be
"fixed" in 2.6.28. (I'm pretty sure akpm has sent the ext3 version of
that patch to Linus by now, but if not, it should make the 2.6.28
merge window.)

If you see "lost page write due to I/O error", then you will have lost
data due to premature removal of the USB stick, and fundamentally
*that* bug exists between the keyboard and the chair.

Regards,

- Ted

Bug#502972: gkrellm-xkb: neither notices changes to the keyboard layout nor permits to change the layout

2008-10-21 Thread Helmut Grohne
Package: gkrellm-xkb
Version: 1.05-5
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

On changing the layout using setxkbmap the plugin simply does nothing.
Only toggling caps or num lock triggers an update. Also left-clicking on
the plugin area results in a menu that when closed gets redrawed to the
correct flag (so the old flag is partly overwritten with the new one).

Furthermore the menu only includes the current layout and nothing else.
The plugin has no configuration or whatsoever, so it is impossible to
use the plugin for changing layouts.

I conclude that the plugin does almost nothing that could be expected
from the description except for maybe showing caps and num lock states.

Bug#502973: unable to forward to localhost dns without having to serve wrong RRs for the nameservers

2008-10-21 Thread martin f krafft
Package: unbound
Version: 1.0.2-1
Severity: normal
tags: upstream

I brought this issue up on the unbound mailing list:

  http://unbound.nlnetlabs.nl/pipermail/unbound-users/2008-October/000240.html

Basically, if I try to use forward-zone or stub-zone to redirect
queries for certain zones to a (nsd3 instance) DNS server running on
localhost, I have to add something like

  % IN NS ns.%
  ns.% IN A 127.0.0.1

to the zone, or else unbound will not forward. This behaviour has
been hackishly fixed upstream, but I'd really rather see it fixed
properly.

Bug#502974: allow %-sign in zone files

2008-10-21 Thread martin f krafft
Package: nsd3
Version: 3.0.7-2
Severity: wishlist

It seems like nsd3 does not deal with % sign in zones.

E.g., instead of a zone definition for my.local.zone of

  % IN NS ns.%
  ns.% IN A 1.2.3.4

I have to specify:

  my.local.zone. IN NS ns.my.local.zone.
  ns.my.local.zone. IN A 1.2.3.4

which has a lot of redundant information.

It would be nice if % were replaced by the root-anchored zone name,
which would also allow reuse of zone files for similar domains.

I disagree that the severity should be lowered, because according to

of issues. However I agree that this issue shouldn't hinder us from
releasing (if it would be the only rc bug ;), so in my pov
the release-team should tag this a lenny-ignore issue.

What does release team say about this?

Best Regards,
Patrick

Argh! Gotta hate it when this happens. :-)

How about just fixing that changelog entry instead of having this
discussion? Or am I missing something here that makes the fix not an
extremely trivial one?

I'm not so sure we need something like CRMI. Ideally, sure, it would be
better to have an external (not in packages) way to store data. But the
whole Debian infrastructure is centered around packages, and maybe we
should just strive to make it easier to add information to packages,
rather than manage information elsewhere.

Bug#502975: fai-client: wrong order of classes in fcopy

2008-10-21 Thread Björn Torkelsson
Package: fai-client
Version: 3.2.4+svn4837-0ubuntu2
Severity: normal

The order of the classes are different depending on how the classes are
passed to fcopy. Currently it is only correct when passing the classes
using the classes environment variable.

$ cat /tmp/class
DEFAULT
A
B

$ ./fcopy -D -n -C /tmp/class
Dry-run only! Nothing is really executed.
Classes: DEFAULT A B
fcopy: target undefined

$ ./fcopy -D -n -c DEFAULT,A,B
Dry-run only! Nothing is really executed.
Classes: DEFAULT A B
fcopy: target undefined

$ env classes="DEFAULT A B" ./fcopy -D -n
Dry-run only! Nothing is really executed.
Classes: B A DEFAULT
fcopy: target undefined
