this should not happen anymore. The zabbix agent does not need to be
restarted on log-rotation, it creates a new log file as soon the old one
has been rotated. We dont restart neither the agent or the server on log
rotation anymore.

this is an old problem which upstream tried to fix by using REUSEADDR
on socket creation which seems not work too well. Upstream knows about
it and i hope there will be some cleaner fix for 1.1.7.

No, indeed not. I get the files correctly created in /var/lib/onak when
I install the package. Was this a package upgrade or a fresh install?
What does your /etc/onak.conf contain?

Indeed, it seems to me that failing silently is not correct. But what
do you think is the right thing to do instead? Force removal of xinetd
with conflicts? Force stopping xinetd in the postinst won't fix it
completely, because both will be trying to be started again when the
machine is rebooted, won't they?

It's particulary confusing because it looks like reasonable logic is in

I don't mean to be a whiner, even though I've posted a couple of bugs
lately; rather, thanks for all the great work that's being put into

Eduardo, I see that you have an Alpine Maildir patch at
http://staff.washington.edu/chappa/alpine/info/maildir.html . Do you have
any comment as to if it's suitable to include it into the Debian Alpine
package?

It seems that the washington.edu have reasons of correctness against
writing their own. Also, do you know if the author of this Maildir patch
is willing to allow Debian to redistribute his patch under the Apache

Thanks!

The CPU frequency submenu in the context menu of the Kpowesave tray icon did
not appear, and "CPU Frequency Policy" pane in the scheme settings was
disabled (grayed and inactive). Examination of the code showed that this
happens when HAL reports that the user doesn't have privileges for setting
CPU frequency, or if the system lacks CPUfreq support. This seems to be
consistent with the specification of the CPUfreq functions in HAL [1].

Bug#413806: lazarus not usable without fpc sources

2007-03-07 Thread Patrick Winnertz
Package: lazarus
Version: 0.9.20-1
Severity: normal

Hey,
lazarus is not usable right now, since you have to donwload manually the
fpc sources and put them somewhere on the filesystem.
Since many people doesn't know about apt-get source fpc or README.Debian
(where you describe what to do), I would suggest to create an fpc-dev
package which includes the necessary files for lazarus and depend on it.
This would make it easier for simple users to work with lazarus.

Bug#413797: OpenBSE inetd configure problem

2007-03-07 Thread Martin Schulze
Package: openbsd-inetd
Version: 0.20050402-5

It seems that the postinst script of openbsd-inetd is not able to
grok a situation in which the package is already installed and the
server running. This is what I get:

finlandia:~# apt-get dist-upgrade -y
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
console-common console-tools cron inn libconsole libnewt-dev lpr nn pdftohtml

1 not fully installed or removed.

dpkg: error processing openbsd-inetd (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:

The server is running already because it's not a new installation
but an update/upgrade, thus, I'm sure it's a valid situation.

The bug is actually in the upstream sources. The patch below, backported

Bug#413807: xsysinfo from etch eats up a lot of CPU and memory

2007-03-07 Thread Pierre Bauduin

Package: xsysinfo
Version: 1.7-5

The version of xsysinfo that comes with Debian 4.0 "etch" has some major
issues.
It uses a lot of CPU and memory all the time.

Even when you're at the xdm login screen (nobody is logged),
If xsysinfo isn't running, the load average is around 0.9
If xsysinfo is running, the load average is around 5.0

Take a look at the following screenshot:
http://pierre.baudu.in/files/2007-03-07-095221_1024x768_scrot.png

You can very well see that:
- load average is 5.0 when xsysinfo is running and 1.0 when it is not
running
- at the time of the screenshot the load average is 4.50
- at the time of the screenshot 560 MB out of 640 MB of swap are being used

Debian release: 4.0 "etch"
Architecture: i386
CPU: Pentium III (Katmai) at 450 MHz
Memory: 256 MB
Kernel: Linux cobra 2.6.18-3-686 #1 SMP Mon Dec 4 16:41:14 UTC 2006 i686
GNU/Linux
Version of packages xsysinfo depends on: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6), libice6,
libsm6, libx11-6, libxaw7, libxext6, libxmu6, libxpm4, libxt6

It would be nice if someone could look into this :)

I'm sorry, but I don't think this is enough. The relevant entry I find

It is two year ago and the "at the moment" still apply. Either you
choose that the choice is definitive or you plan to change it.

If it is definitive (which I would find unfortunate, given that Twisted
API is big and being able to have it when offline would be a big plus)
then you should drop the package or at the very minimum mention in the
long description that it is a useless package.

If it is not definitive ... well, you know what to do :-)

Cheers.

Bug#413256: iceape-browser 1.0.8-1 crashes when using mozilla-mplayer BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)

2007-03-07 Thread Alexander Sack

OK, the patch introduced to overcome broken gecko plugin code for
NPPVpluginKeepLibraryInMemory plugins should be removed as it was not
a clean solution.

Anyway, since the most visible plugin that sets such option and causes
firefox and other gecko apps to crash (e.g. epiphany) is totem, we can
fix it there.

The totem fix that disables NPPVpluginKeepLibraryInMemory properly is
available at:

Bug#413762: database files being created in the root ('/') directory

Jonathan McDowell wrote:

It was a fresh install and the conf file is the one provided in the
package.

Also after reconfiguring the package I got:

$ dpkg-reconfigure onak
The user `onak' already exists as a system user. Exiting.
[07/03/2007 08:45:36] [11272]: Couldn't open num_keydb: No such file or
directory
[07/03/2007 08:45:36] [11272]: Couldn't write num_keydb: No such file or
directory

I didn't notice that yesterday.

I purged the package and installed it again, I got the very same thing.
Another thing is that it doesn't remove system user onak after I've
purged the package.

BTW, by "working", I mean that simple programs do work, event with
__thread variables.

Mmm, which issues?

About the glibc-Mach interface, I don't really have any opinion ;
I would just remind that glibc-linux interface uses a generic
set_thread_area() syscall and a newtls parameter to the clone syscall,
but the passed structure is very arch-specific anyway.

About --without-__thread, it seems to work already (it got debugged on
Linux in the meanwhile).

Bug#413269: Wordpress in etch

2007-03-07 Thread Kai Hendry
Users, DDs and I don't agree with Moritz's decision here. Hence I've
reassigned the bug to the Debian Technical Committee for hopefully a
quick ruling.

I tried to resolve the problem again last night, you can read the IRC
log below.

Moritz believes that Wordpress shouldn't be in etch as it is too
vulnerable to security issues and will prove a burden for Debian
security team. Wordpress might be more vulnerable that some other
packages due to PHP and its high use. Though it has excellent committed
support from upstream who currently maintain a stable security 2.0.x
branch for Debian until 2010. So these security issues, if any, will
pose little burden on Debian's security team.

Have a nice day :)

Doesn't seem like upstream considers it that serious a problem.

Bug#413811: kpowersave: fails to notify if suspend-to-ram fails

2007-03-07 Thread Marcus Better
Package: kpowersave
Version: 0.7.2-1
Severity: normal

kpowersave has code to show a notification popup if suspend-to-ram
fails. This code is quite broken.

Suspend-to-RAM did not work on my system. When I tried to suspend, it
locked the screen (as configured) but never actually suspended. This
was not caused by kpowersave, however it should notify when something
goes wrong.

kpowersave.cpp contains this code to check for successful suspend:

bool ret = hwinfo->suspend(SUSPEND2RAM);

if (ret) {
return true;
} else {

KPassivePopup::message(i18n("WARNING"),i18n("Suspend to RAM failed"),
SmallIcon("messagebox_warning", 20),
this, i18n("Warning"), 15000);
return false;
}

However the actual result is not returned by hwinfo->suspend(), but
through a callback from HAL. Re-compiling with debug messages enabled,
I can see the different status codes returned from HAL:

Suspend working:

 10:27:07:366:  dbusHAL::callBackSuspend
 10:27:07:366:  HardwareInfo::handleResumeSignal (int result: '0')

Suspend not working:

 10:38:03:161:  dbusHAL::callBackSuspend
 10:38:03:161:  HardwareInfo::handleResumeSignal (int result: '127')

This callback causes the resumed() signal to be emitted, and triggers
kpowersave::handleResumeSignal(). There is a wrong assumption here,
since it will be emitted even if the suspend failed.

And that function contains the following gem:

// handle result of the resume/suspend
// TODO: fill with some code
if (result == 0) {
// successful resumed ... remount only in this case
if (!handleMounts(false)) {
KPassivePopup::message(i18n("WARNING"), i18n("Could not
remount (all) external storage"
   " media."),
SmallIcon("messagebox_warning", 20), this,
   i18n("Warning"), 15000);
}
} else if ( result == -1 ) {
myDebug ("Unknown if we successful resumed, look like a
timeout");
setAutoSuspend(true);
} else {
// errro case
}

Notice the unhandled last error case!

So, to fix this properly one would check the result code above and
determine that the suspend failed, and then trigger the pop-up
warning.

Incidentally, the reason for suspend not working is that I use
uswsusp, and my laptop is not yet in the s2ram whitelist, so the
"s2ram" command fails unless given the --force option. This makes the
HAL script return an error code, which kpowersave fails to pick up.

This patch for HAL makes suspend work on non-listed
laptops, but it is only a quick-fix if you don't want to wait for a
new uswsusp release. (Please add your laptop model to the whitelist as
per /usr/share/doc/uswsusp/README.s2ram-whitelist.gz if you have this
problem.)

Yep. Too easy to fix, probably.

Michal Zalweski recently pointed out that Mozilla-based browsers put
the base URL into the title bar in that case, which is supposed to
address the problem. I had not noticed this security indicator
before, and I don't think it's widely known.

Comments/Problems:

Here's a feedback of my installation of Debian 4.0 "etch" on a Power
Macintosh G3 MiniTower

Since it's an oldworld macintosh, it cannot boot from the Debian CDs.
I tried booting from floppies, but it never worked, the floppy drive
is probably dead.
So my solution was to install a legit copy of MacOS 9.2

Here's what I did:
- boot into MacOS 9.2
- launch BootX with the files vmlinux and initrd.gz
- debian-installer runs smoothly and everything goes well, except one
thing: when debian-installer attempts to install quik as a boot
loader, the operation fails, and the error messages states that "the
partition is not ext2". This error messages seems odd to me. What
partition does d-i mean ? The partition where MacOS 9.2 is, which is
HFS ? One of the Linux partitions, which are ext3 and not ext2 ?
Anyway, isn't ext2 the same thing as ext3 without journalization ?
- anyway I'm not worried at all that quik could not install, because I
still can boot into MacOS 9.2 and then fire up BootX to boot into
Debian GNU/Linux
- debian-installer finished up its work and reboots the machine
... and then something goes wrong: I see on the power macintosh a
flashing "?" in a floppy. This means "I can't find any operating
system to boot" ... ouch ! Now that's a problem.
- I tried zapping the PRAM, it did not help.
- Finally I took the "Outil Disque Dur" diskette and chose the menu
"Fonction" and then "Mise à jour". Pardon my French, this should
translate to "Apple Disk Tool", menu "Functions" and then "Update". I
don't know the exact wording since I've never used MacOS

Can you at least give me the md5sum of the file; I want to be certain
it's pristine.

I really don't understand why you'd get this; onak should write the db
files to whatever the db_dir directive states in the config file. I note
you seem to be running a -vserver- kernel, which if memory serves is a
sort of virtualization thing; is it possible this causes issues? Do you
have a different machine you can try on? Any custom permissions on
/var? Does /var/lib/onak get correctly created by the package? I assume
it remains empty?

Bug#413524: [Buildd-tools-devel] Bug#413524: sbuild: please document how to run build as non-root

What I'm trying to achieve is to run the build rule (debian/rules build)
as a normal user. I usually run sbuild as root, and that's fine with me,
but if I have to do something such as 'su - user -c "sbuild [...]"',
that's fine as well for me.

So what I was originally looking for was a '-u user' option, that would
mean "use that username to run parts that can be run as user". The other
way around (running everything as user except what needs root
privileges) is more logical, indeed :-)

I have two different failures:
- one when running sbuild as root, with some packages that fail to build
as root. A good example is petsc, because it fails at the start of the
  build. See

http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2007/02/01/debian-rebuild/petsc_2.3.2-1_etch32.buildlog

One problem I had with documentation is the
/usr/share/sbuild/add_sbuild_user script, which didn't work for me since
I use schroot mode with "file" type chroots.

just a quick heads-up:

we just got a bug report about a regression in streams [1], I pulled

required a little backporting, but nothing too serious (feel free to
take them from the ubuntu -security uploads if you need).

Labels are not well tested and a source of problems indeed.

Can't we just give a different namespace to USB sticks than /dev/sd[a-z] ?

Then we should remove the USB images from the release. They're utterly broken
and only work on old hardware. It'd be a shame if we label this as "stable".

Hi Michael,

thanks for reporting this bug. I could reproduce it as you described.

It crashes with "no letter defined in keyboard.lst" before the segmentation

I wonder if this is related to the umlauts and the change to utf8 in etch...

Is there a general (accepted by upstream) patch to fix the problem?
Quickly looking at the tickets it does not seem so.

Description : pluggable authentication module for migrating to Kerberos

pam_krb5_migrate is a stackable authentication module that takes a
username and password from an earlier module in the stack and attempts
to transparently add the user to a Kerberos realm using the Kerberos 5
kadmin service. The module can be used to ease the administrative
burdens of migrating a large installed userbase from pre-existing
authentication methods to a Kerberos-based setup.

In the playlist, we can press '*' for developp the trees 'Filesystem' or
'Artists'. But if thoses tree are already opened, a second press on '*' will
close the application with a segmentation fault error.
( And the press of '*' in the Artist tree does not expand the whole tree but
only the first sub-level.

Bug#413821: debhelper: per-architecture .install files

2007-03-07 Thread Simon Richter
Package: debhelper
Version: 5.0.42
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I normally use the --fail-missing option to dh_install to catch errors
in the package build process. In the uclibc package, some parts are not
built on all architectures, so missing bits make the build process fail
here.

It would be nice if it were possible to specify per-architecture
..install files (ideally, overriding the common package.install file) so
I can acknowledge this and still use the error checking provided here.

Bug#413819: bloboats: HV-Arena finishes before reaching Enterprise

2007-03-07 Thread Josh Triplett
Package: bloboats
Version: 1.0.1.dsfg-1

HV-Arena seems to end when I go to the right past the arrow pointing at Abyss,
without requiring me to reach Enterprise. This occurs whether I jump on top
of the letters "ABYSS" and roll past the arrow, or if I just jump up the
stairs at Abyss; either way, the level ends successfully before it should.
The attached ghost demonstrates the problem.

Imo s2ram should not be called directly, but via a wrapper, like
pm-utils/acpi-support/hibernate which sets the correct return codes and
output to stdout/stderr.

There's already a similar bug report
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=410818

The cleanest fix imo would be to remove the direct call to s2ram and
have hal depend on one of the above package instead.
This way we get defined behaviour.

update, iteration, and others. There are various kinds of
heterogeneous collections, differing in representation, invariants,
 and access operations.
 .
HList is a Haskell library providing strongly typed heterogeneous
 collections including extensible records.

Mainly packaging this because HAppS 0.8.8 depends on this.

Bug#413828: psgml-init.el does not set xml validate comand properly

2007-03-07 Thread Ryo IGARASHI
Package: psgml
Version: 1.3.2-4
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

When I want to validate my xml (actually xhtml) file using validator
command provided by opensp package from psgml file, psgml uses validator
command provided by sp package. No such problem occurred for the sgml
(html) file. I investigated psgml.el and psgml-init.el file, and found
that there was a naming mismatch for xml validator command setting.

The following patch solved the problem.

Bug#413269: Wordpress in etch

2007-03-07 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Hi,

I'd like to add a bit of information here.

Recently, Wordpress 2.1.1 has been compromised and an exploit added to
the code. http://wordpress.org/development/2007/03/upgrade-212/
This can happen.

However, upstream solves this by advising everyone to "just upgrade to
2.1.2". Otherwise it stays vague about what is affected: they list "past
3-4 days" as the window, they do not tell the (md5 or sha1) checksums of
the trusted version, nor do they give the exploit code that was added.

They produce no way for me to check whether an existing installation is
affected or not. "Just upgrade".

I'm therefore not convinced that they take security seriously in a way
other than "upgrade to this new fixed version, which contains some other
fixes too", which is exactly not what Debian needs.

Bug#413811: kpowersave: fails to notify if suspend-to-ram fails

2007-03-07 Thread Marcus Better
> There's already a similar bug report
> http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=410818

I don't experience the problem described there. s2ram seems to return a
sensible exit code (0 on success, 127 on failure), and this is passed back by
HAL to kpowersave, which fails to understand it.

> The cleanest fix imo would be to remove the direct call to s2ram and
> have hal depend on one of the above package instead.
> This way we get defined behaviour.

No, kpowersave would still be broken, since it misinterprets exit codes from
the suspend script. This is independent of the underlying suspend method. You
can easily test this, just make the HAL script return any non-zero status
code.

Having used uswsusp for a while with very good results I don't see the need
for another wrapper like hibernate (which doesn't support uswsusp anyway). I
already have acpi-support, but it doesn't use uswsusp either.

(Whew, this this suspend stuff is a mess...)

I don't experience this problem. I'm using hal 0.5.8.1-6.1, KDE, kpowersave

file /usr/lib/hal/scripts/linux/hal-system-power-suspend-linux, I don't see
how stderr output could possibly be a problem. It's probably not a HAL bug...

Bug#413829: p7zip creates directories world-writable in most situations

2007-03-07 Thread jrodman
Package: p7zip
Version: 4.43~dfsg.1-2
Severity: important
Tags: patch

*** Please type your report below this line ***

p7zip interperets files read-only file permissions as 444, read-write as
666, and executable as 777 (unsure of full logic but you get the idea).

Similarly, read-write directories are interpereted as 777.

Apparently the format has the posssibility to store unix permissions,
but most files will originate on windows and be handled in this way.

All of these do not respect the umask.

This means that most unpacked .7z files will create directories that are
world-readable, which is pretty undesirable. World readable directories
can defeat default controls on who can write to what filesystems, and
allow users to create files in private storage areas, as well as
directories in same. Creating world-writable directories against the
umask setting may lead to users with foreign-owned unwritable
directories in their private storage areas, which may lead to a good
deal of confusion for them, as well as the inability to remove or
properly manage their home space.

More simply, p7zip does not respect the umask in a way that is prone to
creating usability and/or administration problems.

Essentially the program is a rough port from naive win32 code, that
creates files then applies permissions after-the-fact with chmod,
avoiding the umask. I have not checked to see what default permissions
the files are created with, there may be a race where the files are
writable before the permissions are applied.

This patch enforces the umask against all files, regardless of the
permissions and modes in the archive. You may want to consider not
applying the umask in the case that full unix permissions are acquired
from the archive. Probably the application or nonapplication of umask
in this case should be user controllable. I'm not sure what the right
default is. Perhaps one should look to tar.

In short, I simply feel this patch makes the behavior of p7zip "less
bad". But C++ is really not my forte, and the structure of the program
is more than I wish to seriously wrestle with at this time.

I have alerted upstream, although I have not specifically filed a bug,
as I'm not exactly sure how to classify it, and also because I knew a
lot less about the issue on initially raising it. Here is a link:

Bug#413831: Signed posting to list rejected

2007-03-07 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Package: tech-ctte

Hi,

I've added a bit of information on a bug report assigned to tech-ctte.
However I received a bounce from the mailinglist manager telling me "You
are not subscribed to this list, so your submission was rejected.
Please subscribe to the list first and then repost your message."

The Technical Committee web page mentions that you need to be subscribed
OR PGP-sign your message to get through. As my message was in fact
signed, I think there's a configuration error somewhere. I've temporarly
subscribed now to the list to be able to report this issue.

The message itself is attached.

thanks,

but if we are going to use those which set should we use?

by-path seems like a reasonable choice though it will break if users move
anything (but then so would the old system in many cases)

by-id seems to use the make/model of the drive and maybe some unique id of the
drive,

by-uuid contains my two ext3 partitions but not my swap partition, it also
seems like it may be vulnerable to becoming confused.

maybe an answer would be to use by-path if drives are presenent on multiple
controllers during installation and use conventional names otherwise (possiblly
with a way to override this behaviour for experts).

The 'binary' package provides Data.Binary, containing the Binary class,
and associated methods, for serialising values to and from lazy
 ByteStrings.
 .
A key feature of 'binary' is that the interface is both pure, and efficient.

Bug#413834: lcov: branch coverage (as gcov provides) would be nice to have

2007-03-07 Thread Marius Mikucionis
Package: lcov
Version: 1.5-1

Hi,

gcov provides branch coverage via -b (or -c) option,
but I can't find any option to trigger this in lcov.

Branch coverage is much better test coverage measure than
just line coverage as lcov reports, see e.g. here:

Bug#413837: default dom0_mem parameter in menu.lst

2007-03-07 Thread Jan Korbel

Package: grub
version: 0.97-23 (etch)

I use xen hypervisor 3.0.3-1-i386-pae with about 4 domU (virtual
servers). Server has 6GB RAM, domU from 256MB to 1GB. After some time
(when last domU started) i found this error in dom0:

xen_net: Memory squeeze in netback driver

Dom0 used almost all of memory for disk cache. Also network connections
time-outed. I found something in xensource's bugzilla:

http://bugzilla.xensource.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=762

After changing "# xenhopt=dom0_mem=196MB" in menu.lst, update-grub and
reboot it seems to be ok. I think this parameter should be default for
new installations, but there is problem with exact value - 196MB is too
much for computer with 128MB RAM for example. Anyway at least some
warning about this problem should be available when installing.

are you calling it moronic to make a backup of a partition by dding to to a

conventional way of doing things i'd call that pretty unexpected breakage.

the fact it doesn't seem to work for all partition types would seem to rule it

krb5 mounts suddenly stopped working. I am not sure when this
happened, probably after upgrading something on either the client or
server. When mounting I get this error on the server:

On the client, the mount simply fails:

In this case, I think we can't do anything to fix it: I don't think that
applying a patch to change the behaviour of DateTime in Debian is the right
thing to do, because other parties could depend on the broken behaviour. Am
I right or I'm missing something?

I didn't use that particular patch, but one that uses a goto into the
standard function exit/cleanup path.

However, e2fsprogs is still mostly written in a pre-C99 style, because
there are systems where free() will fail or crash if passed the NULL
pointer. (I'll note that the gdb coding standards still requires the
use of xfree(), which does the null pointer check because of this
concession to pragmatics.) So Steinar simply wrote the patch in the
style of the surrounding code, which is a Good Thing.

Bug#413840: please make qemu be qemu-system-$arch and not qemy-system-x86 this is counter-intuitive IMHO

2007-03-07 Thread Pierre Habouzit
Package: qemu
Severity: normal

I use qemu on an amd64 machine, and it's very counter-intuitive that
'qemu' is not the x86_64 one. I undertand that qemu may work on $arch's
that he does not know to emulate, so maybe qemu should just be a
symlink, dealt with alternatives with e.g. a priority of 10 for any
arch, 20 for x86, and 90 for the $arch that matches the hosts one.

(meaning that on amd64 we would have 10 for any qemu-system, except
-x86 which should have 20 and x86_64 90 hence becoming default).

Argh. (Point taken on the style issue though.)

Phil

ps: Wasn't free(NULL) supposed to be OK in C*89* ?? Ah yes,
the Rationale specifically mentions it: "The null pointer is specified
as a valid argument to this function to reduce the need for
special-case coding." The real world beats 18 year old standard every
time of course, but are there really actual systems still around
(which e2fsprogs is expected to run on) that crash on free(NULL) ? A
bit depressing if so...

Downgrading and restarting nfs-common solved the problem.
