The current installation of comicthumb installed gconf keys for a
thumbnailer referring to "comicthumb" which is not included in the
package.

The Debian package currently uses the --no-mime option to install.py to
get any necessary files for the package to be built. This causes
comicthumb to be left out of the installation. While this may be a good
thing since it prevents any potential Nautilus dependency, the
comicbook.schemas file which is installed still includes the comicthumb
references. Either comicthumb should be included as part of the package
(or be made into a separate package) or the comicbook.schemas file (in
mime/) should be edited to remove any references to the comicthumb
program.

Bug#411625: Kontact getting mail takes too long, using 100% cpu

Hi, I'm using kontact to manage 5 pop3 accounts, when I start it and there are 
let us say 20 mails in each account, then getting the mails takes several 
minutes even if the mails are not big, the cpu usage is 100% then and the 
progressbars don't move smooth, i seams as the program blocks and waits and 
then gets 1 email and then again blocks, when you then change the focus to 
another window, and change then back to kontact it seems to be freezed, but 
after a while it gets this 1 or 2 mails and shows up normal again, but then 
blocks as described again.
I'm using Debian testing with 2.6.18 kernel on 2 computers and on each the 
behavior of kontact is the same.

Well, I don't feel strongly about it remaining 'serious' either; it would
certainly be nice to have /var/lib/tftpboot as a default, but the current
behavior is akin to /var/www, and many other tftp daemons have this problem
in one form or another also.

I have been usinsg kontact for a long time without seeing this, so I would not 
call it 'renders package unusable'.
But you need to tell a bit more about your mail setup.
Which account types are you using? pop3? imap? dimap? ...
If you use imap or dimap, do  you know what remote server software it is 
running?

Is it a new install or a 'upgrade' ?
If it is a upgrade, from which version - and did it work back then ?

Digging around a bit shows
 as the message
explaining exactly what the subsequent error is.  I'm not sure that the
relocation error affects all modules, though -- perhaps applying this patch
would be of /some/ benefit to users of SMP kernels, even if it doesn't fix
the problems with all modules?  Andrew's post mentions problems with ipv6,
and /references/ an older post reporting problems with xfs, but has anybody
tested that e.g., xfs is still broken?

Norbert, do you have any further thoughts on this?

Bug#411552: please set a timeout in syslinux screen

Here are some scenarios to consider:

* Suppose that I'm blind. I put in the CD, reboot, and wait the 5
  minutes I generally wait to get it past post[1]. Then I carefully start
  typing the necessary kernel options for my braille reader into the
  syslinux prompt I expect to be there...

  Even once I learn about the timeout, installing Debian is going to
  suck a lot more than before for me.

* Suppose that the machine is being booted by a rack monkey at the data
  center. If it's set up like my data center, this means they put the CD
  in the front of the rack, power on the machine, then run 200 feet
  around to the back of the rack -- only to find that the crash cart
  with the display isn't hooked up to the right machine. So they switch
  it to the right one. Meanwhile, I want them to boot with "auto=true" to
  avoid walking them through the whole install over the phone, and am
  subsequently quite confused when I tell them to type that, and they
  say that it replies with "Elektu landon, teritorion au aeron" and some
  other strange words.

  Can you figure out what happened based on the above description? :-)
  Could you figure it out over the phone? While being charged $x/minute
  for a call from Europe to the US?

* My grandnephew Kai Runyon[2] is here visiting. He's 2, and he likes to
  pound on keyboards and flip switches. He finds my power switch. Then he
  finds my keyboard. I come out of a programming haze to find my media
  server formatting its home directory thanks to the d-i CD I just had
  it burn.

  Ok, granted, the timeout only saved him one well-placed enter, but
  it's not unheard of for my home network to have preseed setups enabled
  that let this whole scenario happen with only a few keystrokes.

* My kiosk machine only has a user-accessible touchscreen, the keyboard
  is locked away to avoid all those easily implantable keylogger chips,
  and other problems. I leave an installation CD in it so that it can be
  quickly reinstalled if something goes wrong, or weekly (just in case).
  One day I decide to switch it to this new version of the lenny CD,
  which happens to be the one where g-i becomes the default installer.
  This also happens to be the one that a tricky user of the kiosk uses to
  intercept a lot of credit card numbers, after running through the whole
  g-i install using only the keypad, to get root.

The liklihood of these varies, but they do illistrate the range of users
that we have to consider when trying to make this kind of change.

It is very unlikely that the installer actually hangs at that point. It is 
much more likely that it is running fine, but that the keyboard is not 
being recognized which means that typing anything just does not have any 
effect.

If you have a USB keyboard, try changing the "legacy usb keyboard support" 
option in your BIOS setup. If the system also has a connector for AT 
keyboards and you can find one, try that.

However, such a directory is not mounted:

$  mount | grep -i java
$

However, according to /proc/mount, the remote cifs/smbfs is mounted!

unmounting this directory makes it apear correct:

would you mind trying pgAdmin III 1.6.2 ? Unofficial debian
packages for etch are available from the main site[1].

It would help to figure out if it's still unfixed upstream or not.

Yes, it is! I doubt that the patch still applies cleanly and I know the
proper way is to contact the translation robot directly but to be honest
I never used it and the last time I tried it I noticed missing
documentation.

myself ...

If you can still run ps, it does not hang completely.
If you have another system that is connected to the one you are 
installing, you can also start the web browser option in "safe debug 
logs" _before_ you come to the point where the installer hangs. Then you 
can view and save the logs using a webbrowser on the other system.

Why don't you just provide us with the information of the processes that 
are running? We probably _do_ know what we are looking for. The last 10

thanks for this suggestion. If I remove that line, I'm able to start the
X server using xserver-xorg-core 2:1.1.1-18, but not with 2:2.1.0-3.
However, what I get is not one screen next to the other as before, but a
cloned output (except for the mouse pointer, which is visible only on
one of the screens).

- do you get a dialog saying the installer is entering low memory mode?
- what languages are offered in the first dialog (language selection)?

  - grep ^MemFree: /proc/meminfo

./sounds/reject.raw: 8086 relocatable (Microsoft)


To explain, the AUTHORS file is empty, although the source code
files seem to have the right format (I have looked in a few files).
There are a couple of codecs that are in the source and which have
no source. Not sure if those can be replaced with something free.
Although the project says GNU GPL on the Trove Map, the text of the
license is not in the package.


The raw files there don't bother me since they can be removed and
replaced by free equivalents or something in that area.

What I am most concerned is the codecs and the fact that the code
seems to be maintained at the edge of functionability and it looks
like the kind of source that comes from people that do not know/care
about free as in freedom, but about free as in beer.

No. More precisely:
 * If I suspend to disk, then I have a high probability of getting a 
crash on restore. I'd say at least 3 out of 4 (initially it seemed 
pretty much systematic).
 * If I suspend to memory, then there is no crash.
 * I never got any problem in normal use.
 * I don't know if it is alternating suspend to memory and suspend to 
disk that causes the problem. I could check that.

enscript currently defaults to A4 size paper regardless of locale.  It would be 
nice if there were a way (possibly via 
"dpkg-reconfigure") to set it to whatever the local standard is ("Letter" in 
the US, for example).

This is already possible for the libpaper1 package, which enscript depends on.  
Maybe enscript could consult 
/etc/papersize as configured by libpaper1 to get its paper size.

I'd say 5 minutes is a little bit exagerated. IMHO 1 minute should
be ok.

BTW, I also found it annoying when I found the virtual machines I
used for different things hanged at that prompt after I started with
a custom image and went away to find no progress on the booting process.

Could be a number of things, but faulty installation media, network
problems and debconf prompts have been the most common ones that I've seen
so far. I did a full installation yesterday which went smoothly, so I
suspect a non-cryptsetup and non-debconf prompt related problem.

Could you perhaps try a new install using a newly downloaded image just to
rule out any such issues?

Finally got the thing compiled, and I can now load/unload the
module too -- bug fixed, thanks very much.

Unfortunately, when loaded, it spawns a kenvctrld which eats up
almost 100% of one the CPUs, so unusable at present. But I've
seen a report on the Ubuntu sparc lists with a (1 line) fix for
this problem, so I'll have a crack at that now.
