Thanks for your report. I put the patch to svn as said in #319303 by

Bug#319447: whines about splashy not running after F2 has been pressed

2005-07-22 Thread Paul Wise
Package: splashy
Version: 0.1.5
Severity: minor

When I press F2 before the boot process is complete, the splashy init
scripts complain that splashy isn't running. Be good if the scripts
silently ignored this fact and printed nothing instead of complaining.

Example output:

 * Booting process at 99%

Splashy is not running... no commands can be sent
Please verify /etc/default/spalshy and /etc/splashy/config.xml for correctness

Getting rid of the colour would be nice too, since it adds nothing
compared to a readable grey. And an upload to unstable would be good.
Other niggly thing is that the transition from the splashy image to the
login manager is not particularly smooth - splashy should wait until X
and the login manager has started before switching virtual consoles.

yes, it didn't work out of the box because nagios-pgsql only
recommends libdbd-pg-perl (which is what brings in libdbi-perl). i
believe it is only a recommends and not a depends because you
don't need it to function, only to run said check. also, even
if we did depend on it, it doesn't work out of the box so it doesn't
get the average jane or joe to automatically include it. perhaps
the documentation should be updated to include a note that you
have to install this package? i'll go ahead and do so before
closing this bug.

is check_nagios_db able to read the config files? what happens

Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Hi,

please remove the source packages libchipcard, libopenhbci,
libopenhbci-plugin-ddvcard, and aqmoney from unstable and testing.
They are superseded by the libaqbanking/libaqhbci library and applications.
While I still use them myself, they'll not be released with etch and so
I don't see the point of doing the C++-Transition for them. So it's time
to remove them.
Naturally, I'll continue support on woody.

Kind regards + TIA,

Bug#319449: vtun: Extremely insecure; false-sense-of-security risk

2005-07-22 Thread Mike Paul
Package: vtun
Severity: important

vtun uses a "home-grown" cryptographic protocol which is exteremely
insecure. See the analysis at:

  http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/linux_vpn.txt

Users of this package are likely to believe their communication is
well-protected, when in fact it is very vulnerable. Probably nobody
should use this software; use something like OpenVPN instead.

> Debian Bug Subscription Feature, by Joachim Breitner:

I'm quoting that mail to feed it to the bug report regarding the issue.

"
Hi,

Something that I have been missing for along time is the posibility to
subscribe to single bugs in our bugtracking system. Two years ago, at
Oslo, I created a patch to debbugs that would add that feature, but due
to slow communication with the debbugs team and probably not enough
persistence on my side, this never made in into the debbugs package.

Today, I started this again, this time as an independant service, thus
enabling easier development and no risk for the crucial debbugs
infrastructure. It is currenlty in "first usable state with minimum
features". To use it, send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
with the bugnumer (and only the bug number, nothing else, not even a #)
in the Subject. From then on, you should get any mail on
[EMAIL PROTECTED] that concerns that bug.

There is currently no way to unsubscribe. Not too bad, since bugs tend
to be fixed someday, but certainly a TODO. Also, there is no
confirmation question, nothing to prevent you from recieving the same
mail twice. There is a Anti-Mailloop-Feature, I hope it works. Debian
Developers can have a look at the code on
gluck.debian.org:~nomeata/debsub/, comments and patches welcome.

Greetings from Helsinki,

Joachim

Would be nice - though, please note that my correction suggestions might
be completely wrong, as noted in my last mail to the BTS, plus there
seems an actual bug to be left (failed exec() goes unnoticed).
I don't quite understand yet what the developers' intentions are,
so no clue what exactly should be fixed, but at least there is code
in faxq that should detect a failed exec(), which it obviously doesn't,
and documentation is not in sync with what the program does.

Bug#319455: dovecot-common: All messages marked as "old but not deleted"

2005-07-22 Thread Steaphan Greene
Package: dovecot-common
Version: 0.99.14-1
Severity: important

It seems that Dovecot marks every message served up by its pop and imap
servers as "Status: O" if downloaded with certain clients (like
fetchmail), which, according to RFC 2076 means "message is old but not
deleted" - though this is non-standard. This makes mail readers that
use this field (like mutt) think all new mail is just old unread mail.
There also seems to be no way to disable this in the current version's
configuration, making these clients unable to function correctly when
used with dovecot.

This also seems to have an affect on kmail's ability to automatically
read new messages from the dovecot imap server as well, but I have not
confirmed this is certainly due to the same problem.

This seems to have been discussed upstream, but with no resolution I can
find:

Bug#319457: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-k7: DVD Burning with ide-scsi : oops the kernel, hangs ide-scsi

2005-07-22 Thread A Mennucc
Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-2-k7

Severity: important

hi

I just bought a DVD Burner; I wanted to burn stuff, so I loaded
ide-scsi (since this was the way to go some years ago - I did not
know that now is deprecated) ; the command
$ dvdrecord dev=1,0,0 -v -dummy -dao  debian-31r0a-i386-binary-1.iso
segfaulted, and its fork started printing:
dvdrecord: No such device or address. Cannot send SCSI cmd via ioctl

Moreover the kernel oopsed (NULL pointer dereference)
and then the module ide-scsi seems dead
(cannot remove it, does not respond); see dmesg in attachment

Bug#319454: drscheme: Selecting text in a text entry field crashes on AMD64

2005-07-22 Thread Simon Guest
Package: drscheme
Version: 1:209-5
Severity: normal

This problem occurs for me on AMD64, but not on i386.

Selecting text in a text entry field, for example the filename in the
Open File dialog, crashes DrScheme, with the following error message:

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 18 (X_ChangeProperty)
  Value in failed request: 0x40
Serial number of failed request: 9481
Current serial number in output stream: 9483

This occurs whether the selection is done with the mouse or the
keyboard. I have noticed it in both the Open File dialog, and the Add
Teachpack dialog.

cheers,
Simon

MySQL includes asm/atomic.h - I don't know the exact reason, but it's
not exported to userland. I think MySQL should be fixed instead of
linux-kernel-headers. I reassigned this report to mysql-dfsg source
package. If you know the concrete reason to fix lkh, please reassign
back and explain to us.

Bug#319459: imapcopy: package description is ... strange :)

2005-07-22 Thread Gerfried Fuchs
Package: imapcopy
Version: 1.01-1
Severity: minor

Description: IMAP backup, copy and migration tool
IMAPCopy is a small command line tool to copy messages for multiple users
from one imap server to another. Written the program to migrate messages
   ^^^
from a GNU/Linux box to MS Exchange but it works with other imap
 ^^^
 implementations as well.

Why would anyone like to do that? Especially on a Debian system? If you
write "it works with other imap implementations" I'd rather think one of
those makes sense to note, and if it is possible to migrate the other
way round please at least switch the two or add something like "and the
other way round" or such...

 Thanks in advance,

Does that mean the fix is in the current package, and it just needs to enter
testing? Or that the current package has to enter testing, and then you'll
add it to the *next* version of the package?

It's worth noting that this bug is quite likely to bite things other than X
Windows; anything which messes with truly volatile memory is potentially
affected. It's very desirable to get this in as soon as possible to limit
the number of miscompiled packages. The silent miscompilations may be quite
hard to detect and track down.

I strongly recommend incorporating this change in gcc-4.0 ASAP and uploading
it high-priority. It's a lot more serious than the "wishlist" priority
indicates.

The problem is that all drivers use Cache::shutdown except File driver.
And after a shutdown, all items are not dirty except using File driver.

It is not a bug, but if we re-init the driver after a shutdown, there will be
items in dirty state but they should not be.

So if we don't use Cache:shutdown, we have to reset the dirty flag in
File::shutdown by adding this line in File.pm:

foreach my $item (sort keys %{$this->{cache}}) {
next unless defined $this->{cache}->{item}; # skip deleted
  $this->{format}->write($fh, $this->{cache}->{$item}, item);
+ $this->{dirty}->{$item}=0 if defined $this->{dirty}->{$item};
}

and the unit tests will work ;) :
./test_debconf.pl Test::Debconf::DbDriver::FileTest
.
OK (5 tests)

We didn't see any actual problem from you. So we can't decide it's

IIRC, either pinentry-gtk or pinentry-qt needs to know the current tty
to work properly. Even that they are X applications.

> BTW I think it's illuminating that most hits for GPG_TTY are about how to
> get mutt to work properly.

Yes, GPG_TTY needs to be set for mutt:

  int pgp_use_gpg_agent (void)
  {
return option (OPTUSEGPGAGENT)
   && getenv ("GPG_TTY")
   && getenv ("GPG_AGENT_INFO");
  }

The reason for the GPG_TTY check is that Mutt is not able to know
whether a curses or GTK+ bvased pinentry will be used and thus it
better checks that everything is correct before it tries to use the
agent.

Joey is right in that it shouldn't be needed. I have however not
tested it and frankly never used the classic pgp backend for years.

Hi,

i have the same problem here. i used us_intl as keyboard layout in X
first but switched back to us now for testing. the behavoir is still
there.

i used xmodmap -e "keycode 64 = Alt_L Meta_L" which did not help
here.

i tried to change keyboard layout in gnome but that didn't help
either.

i also tried to change this 'default shortcuts modifier key' to
something else which also didn't change the behavior.

i didn't have this with an older version of the setup gnome/sawfish,
this may be introduced by gnome 2.10... but metacity works fine
(regarding alt-tab :) but i don't like metacity. any ideas?

Package: wnpp

I don't use this program anymore and want to concentrate on other Debian

The package eli-doc should be adopted together with this one.
Given the low popcon stats for this package I will ask for its removal

Bug#319462: sox raw input inserts bad byte -> sound gets garbled

2005-07-22 Thread Tuukka Toivonen
Package: sox
Version: 12.17.7-2

I have raw audio, byte swapped order, 16-bits, signed, mono.
It should be played by command
sox -x -w -s -c 1 -r 44100 -t raw stream.raw -t ossdsp /dev/dsp
but I only get awful noise.

Copying older sox version from Debian Woody (and depended libraries
libvorbisenc.so.0 and libvorbisfile.so.0) it works correctly.

The input parameters matter, not the output parameters:
I can write the output into raw file and compare them
between the two sox versions. This reveals that in the
broken sox version there is one extra zero byte inserted
at offset 120 which shifts all the rest data one byte
forward.

My test file:
http://www.ee.oulu.fi/%7Etuukkat/tmp/stream.raw
(but any raw file in the same format could be used).

System info:
Package: libc6
Version: 2.3.2.ds1-22
Computer: x86, kernel 2.4.29 (tried two x86 computers, same results).

Bug#319464: gksu crashes when using gnome-keyring

2005-07-22 Thread Thomas Halva Labella
Package: gksu
Version: 1.3.0-1
Severity: important

Hi!

gksu ends with segmentation fault when using the keyring.
I can replicate this behaviour by launching, for instance:

  $ gksu synaptic

gksu first asks me root password. Then, I'm asked to create a default
keyring by providing a password for it. After I entered the password
and clicked on OK, gksu crashes. From now on, 'gksu synaptic' will
crash immediately. I have to delete the file
~/.gnome2/keyrings/default.keyring to use it again.

As a workaround, I set 'always-ask-password' to 'yes' in
/etc/gksu.conf.

Bug#319466: automatically use STARTTLS for IMAP connections

2005-07-22 Thread Philip Blundell

Package: mozilla-thunderbird
Version: 1.0.2-3
Severity: enhancement

It would be handy if Thunderbird could automatically negotiate SSL
encryption for IMAP connections on port 143 by using the STARTTLS command.

At present, the only way to select SSL seems to be to go into the
account settings dialog and tick the SSL box. Users tend to forget to
do this: it would be better if TLS was just enabled automatically when
the server supports it. Also, the existing "SSL" option causes
Thunderbird to connect to the imaps service on port 993, which causes
trouble with some corporate firewalls that block outbound connections on
that port.

And maybe, so could the even older #34071 and #138772? Since they are
really identical to #38116, but against the package debbugs instead of
the virtual package bugs.debian.org.

Or is this implemented in some other way? (I do realize no new debbugs
package has been released lately)

> For more information, feel free to look at the documentation:

Which states:

"Normally, the only people that are allowed to close a bug report are
the submitter of the bug and the maintainer(s) of the package against
which the bug is filed."

I'm neither, so I did not dare closing #38116 myself.

Hi,
as you can see[0] this in not an pwc error, you have to load videodev
kernel module before using pwc module. Maybe there is a way to make an
modules.conf setting to avoid this. I have to check it.

Please close this bug if this is the solution of your error.

Sorry, I'm not going to re-enable POSIX threads across the board;
upstream are vehemently opposed to it and I do need upstream help from
time to time. Doing so would reopen other bugs which are equally severe.
It's possible that I may create a separate sshd-pthreads binary if there
is no alternative.

In the meantime, what's in your PAM configuration? I'd like to narrow
this down to particular modules.

How is the subscription implemented? Is the submitter subscribed by

Hmm, I see. This is your patch:

- /usr/bin/Mail -s "$string: $subject" $destin < $file
+ /usr/bin/mail -s "$string: $subject" $destin < $file

However, "Mail" should work, as "Mail" is a symlink to "mail" in
mailx_1:8.1.2-0.20040524cvs-4 (the version shipped in sarge).

So, this is very funny, since apparently:

* What you reported seems to be a problem in your system that I can't explain,
not a bug in sharutils_4.2.1-13 (the version in your bug report).

* There was a bug in sharutils_4.2.1-14 for the i386 architecture, in
exactly the same line you reported. This is the bug I've fixed.

Perhaps you are not using Debian itself but a Debian-derived distribution?

But you see, dovecot-common doesn't have to be the same version. Or so I
think. What kind of problem did dovecot-imapd have with an older
dovecot-common? It might justify bumping up the version in the
dependency.

Bug#319455: dovecot-common: All messages marked as "old but not deleted"

2005-07-22 Thread Jaldhar H. Vyas

On Fri, 22 Jul 2005, Steaphan Greene wrote:

Package: dovecot-common
Version: 0.99.14-1
Severity: important

It seems that Dovecot marks every message served up by its pop and imap
servers as "Status: O" if downloaded with certain clients (like
fetchmail), which, according to RFC 2076 means "message is old but not
deleted" - though this is non-standard. This makes mail readers that
use this field (like mutt) think all new mail is just old unread mail.
There also seems to be no way to disable this in the current version's
configuration, making these clients unable to function correctly when
used with dovecot.

Can you check to see if this problem still exists in 0.99.20050712 which
is in sid?

Then this seems to be quite an exceptional configuration, and I don't think
it warrants a release-critical severity. Regardless of how the server is
configured for tcp connections, it's normal to keep it configured to listen
on a standard unix socket as well.

Hi Justin,

I do not really know the answer on this point, but how do
you deduce this order from that header file?

Some grepping of kernel sources seems to indicate to me that
the order is outb(value, port). Also in /usr/include/sys/io.h
I see:

static __inline void
outb (unsigned char value, unsigned short int port)
{
  __asm__ __volatile__ ("outb %b0,%w1": :"a" (value), "Nd" (port));
}

And finally in the 1e of Linux Device Drivers that I have to
hand, on p164 I see:

voiud(outb, unsigned char byte, unsigned port);

But perhaps I am missing something?

Cheers,

Michael

(severity normal because it touches only the stand-alone mode)

You are using capi4hylafax in stand-alone mode, right? That is without
hylafax? The thing is that hylafax normally copies the files from
/etc/hylafax/ to /var/spool/hylafax/etc/. In stand-alone mode, we have
to do it ourselves.

I'm adopting the package, and I'll fix that.

Ok, maybe it is not necessary, for them to have the same version.
After the last update of dovecot from 0.99.14-1 to 0.99.20050712-1

The 0.8.17.4-1 version from universe (which should fit) doesn't work
either. The error here occurs when requiring sb-bsd-sockets ("Don't know

Since I'm starting with Common Lisp, I don't really need to use SBCL (I
think CMUCL could be fine for now), but I don't like to not have the
choice... :-)

Are these problems specific to Debian or is there a way to have (one of)
the last SBCL version working with SLIME?

partimage suffers from this, because the line between two of its
paragraphs contains a single space rather than being zero-length;
lintian's check currently requires a zero-length line. Since
parsecdata() in /usr/lib/dpkg/controllib.pl strips off trailing spaces
before splitting paragraphs, I've changed lintian to do the same.

Right. But if this inode was the journal inode, much earlier it would
have complained that the journal was invalid, and cleared it during
the first run of e2fsck. The wierd thing is that first run of e2fsck
didn't complain about this, but the second run of e2fsck _did_. That
should never happen, unless the device is broken and returning

thanks

I cannot reproduce this from here. Sending faxes works out of the box
for me, from hylafax clients on other machines. What you propose
doesn't make sense to me:

You want to run
 /var/spool/hylafax/bin/* /usr/local/sbin
during installation. This would, on my system, execute:

 /var/spool/hylafax/bin/archive /var/spool/hylafax/bin/faxrcvd
/var/spool/hylafax/bin/faxrcvd.dpkg-old /var/spool/hylafax/bin/mkcover
/var/spool/hylafax/bin/notify /var/spool/hylafax/bin/notify-4.1
/var/spool/hylafax/bin/notify.awk /var/spool/hylafax/bin/pcl2fax
/var/spool/hylafax/bin/pdf2fax /var/spool/hylafax/bin/pdf2fax.gs
/var/spool/hylafax/bin/pollrcvd /var/spool/hylafax/bin/ps2fax

/var/spool/hylafax/bin/tiff2pdf /var/spool/hylafax/bin/wedged /usr/local/sbin

which in non-sensical. Please explain your problem, and the suggested
solution, in more detail.

Thanks,

Bug#319476: upgrade to 2.2.4-1 from TLS-enabled postfix 2.1.5-9 fails

2005-07-22 Thread Sandor Geller
Package: postfix
Version: 2.2.4-1

Today I compiled 2.2.4-1 on sarge (I know this version is intended to
use on sid/etch), and noticed that the upgrade failed. It was easy to
track down the problem - postfix-tls diverted several files, and the
postfix package failed to remove these diversions because of file
overwriting problems. Attached is a small patch for debian/preinst which
solved the problem for me.

yes, this was my fault as my key had expired at the wrong point in

Bug#198275: scp behavior concerning remote filenames and special characters

2005-07-22 Thread Vincent Lefevre
The behavior of scp when there are special characters in remote
"filenames" should be documented in the man page, such as:

Special characters in the remote file names are not escaped and
will be interpreted by the remote shell.

In fact, I've often used this feature, e.g. "scp host:file\* ." to
retrieve several files.

If this is not considered to be safe, then scp should probably
detect special characters and return an error.

Another suggestion:

The different behaviors could be implemented as options to put in
the user's .ssh/config file (remote shells may behave in different
manners, but as options may be host-dependent, this is not a real
problem). For instance, this could be:

  ShellMetaCharacters "'`*?\
ShellQuote no | auto | error

(no = current behavior, auto = spaces and metacharacters are
automatically quoted by scp, error = if the file name contains
a space or a metacharacter, then an error is returned by scp).

I don't know if POSIX completly defines the metacharacters, but
if it does, one should be able to write:

  ShellMetaCharacters posix

and this should probably be the default.

Any comment?

Bug#319478: spamassassin: installing libnet-dns-perl overrules local.cf settings; please be more clear in documentation

2005-07-22 Thread Joost van Baal
Package: spamassassin
Version: 3.0.3-2
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Spamassassin's README.Debian features:

Please note that you need libnet-dns-perl (>= 0.34) to use network
tests. Since this is not required to use spamassassin, it can not be a
dependency, and thus it may not necessarily be installed
 automatically.

please add this note:

NB: since the default for the dns_available configuration setting is
"test", installing libnet-dns-perl will change your list of "trusted
relays", which in turn will change your hits on tests like
 MSGID_FROM_MTA_ID and ALL_TRUSTED.

. Implementing the suggestion by Marc Sherman in Bug #290927 to change
the trusted_networks setting in the Spamassassin configuration would
also be nice.

Current behaviour really is quite misleading :(

Thanks, Bye,

Joost

Same happened to me over here on a freshly installed Ubuntu/Hoary.
This looks _suspiciously_ like the problem with build environment I
encountered on Debian/PPC a while ago: the test in contrib/bsd-sockets
fails (because of missing echo service?) and the module doesn't get
included into the package.

Well, the sbcl-9.nn seem to have a general slime problem.

Bug#319482: mozilla-firefox: Hebrew support doesn't work properly

2005-07-22 Thread Antony Gelberg
Package: mozilla-firefox
Version: 1.0.4-3
Severity: important

It is impossible to read some Hebrew sites that use vowels beneath letters
(nekudot). An example is www.hebrewtoday.com. The nekudot appear below and
next to letters rather than just below. This makes the site mostly illegible.
I am ashamed to report that it works on IE on Windows. The encoding of the
characters is valid although the whole page isn't valid HTML.

There is a patch for this - see http://blacksapphire.com/firefox-rtl/. Can
this be incorporated into Debian please. I'm not sure if there are plans to
merge it into the main repository.

Thanks for your nice patch - but we plan to upload glibc 2.3.5 series
that should fix this problem soon. I tagged it as
fixed-in-experimental.

The problem seems to no longer be there with 0.99.20050712. I haven't
tested to see if the kmail problem is also resolved yet, but the problem
with fetchmail/mutt seems to be gone. Thanks.

Each translation is managed under GNU translation team. I can't put
your patch to Debian straightforwardly. Rodrigo and translators,
could you review this patch? It was submitted to Debian distribution,

Me too. I don't know what the actual problem is - it may be hardware
dependent problem, or simply system has another libc6. I'll close

Hi,
as you can see[0] this in not an pwc error, you have to load videodev
kernel module before using pwc module. Maybe there is a way to make an
modules.conf setting to avoid this. I have to check it.

Please close this bug if this is the solution of your error.

Thanks
