Actually, these design issues have to be decided by either Matt, Michael, or other APT-involved people. I talk to Matt yesterday about the APT manpages. Plans should be to move them to PO files : keep the English man pages as XML files and use PO for man pages translations. There is such work going on for dpkg : I stillm have to talk with Scott about it and then we will be able to have a look at APT and convert the man page translation process to use PO, with the help of po4a which can handle gettext format for both roff man pages and xml files. So, actually, I think that it might be a good idea to "forget" about man pages updatesand especially changing the man pages build process now.

While seeing that several things were broken by the change, I decided to go one step back and just take time for other people to be able to fix thei packages. So, the plan is have one of us writing a small document explaining the issue, then post to -devel with it, then start a long flamewar, then have the offending packages fixed to be able to work both ways if they canthen upload a fixed shadow. The summertime is probably not very well suited for this, so it may take a few weeks to complete the process, anyhow. > What do you think about creating a su-old-behavior package, which depends > on su (and will work with both old and new su) and contains a wrapper > executable (shell script, perl script or binary) called e.g. old-su, to > provide the old behavior of su using new (or old) su? Your suggestion sounds interesting as well. I will need to put the "pbuilder and others" people attention to this and make them think about this transition and the possibility you suggested to have a transitory period of time. My only concern is that such temporary package might sound as a bit overkill to solve this problem. It should be easy to > extend that code so that it recognizes when /etc/resolv.conf is > managed by resolv.conf. I spoke too soon. I changed the hostname on that page and clicked "Save" and received an error message: '"controlled" is not a valid nameserver IP address'. After entering '127.0.0.1' in the first field and blanks in the others, webmin displays '127.0.0.1', 'controlled' and 'by' as the three addresses. So NetworkManager isn't really "supported" yet. :/ When I entered some legal addresses and clicked 'Save' again, webmin did change the hostname. Complaint: the nsswitch.conf file was written even though I hadn't changed those settings; the old file was byte-for-byte similar to the file that was written out. If files aren't changed then configuration tools should _not_ write them; the ctime should be preserved. On a positive note, I am happy to see that webmin does the right thing in changing the hostname. It changes the name in both /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts. (It correctly does _not_ add the hostname as an alias for localhost, as gnome-system-tools incorrectly does.) -- Thomas Hood -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Ah. Unfortunately, I don't see any way to fix this for the case of libct1, which is the package being purged and as a result removing the config file and directory. I would suggest that this is a misuse of purge, really, since purging means removing all of the config files, and there is a config file here that I think you don't want to remove. This could be fixed in libct3 by creating a separate package just to hold the config file, but that isn't even an issue until the next time libct's soname changes. -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer

Hm. This used to work a long time ago, but was never really tested since I started to maintain nbd-server, and I don't think it ever really worked, either. I guess I'll just have to stop pretending, and remove the mentioning of port 0 and the inetd support from the documentation for the next release. It's not all that useful anyway. In any case, since sarge has been released, the version that is in sarge can nolonger be updated; you'll have to use nbd-server in daemon mode. -- The amount of time between slipping on the peel and landing on the pavement is precisely one bananosecond signature.asc Description: Digital signature

I don't see the problem with this. In same cases we could create a file with the same permissions as the source file but not in all. Often gpg does not work on the file but just reads the content. This common Unix behaviour (cf. cat(1)). If there are concerns, make sure the umask has ben set properly. Sor signing confidential files, a detached signature is anyway a better choice. Another reason not to change it is that it changes the interface and thus would break myriads of scripts. That was not my point here at all, I was only > stating that your comments about udev and the kernel were incorrect. > > ... > > As Debian seems wed to 2.6.8, devfs is still there, you can still use it. Debian has not wed itself to 2.6.8 . But Debians "slow" release cycle (and no other aspect of Debian kernel support, messy or not) means that 2.6.8 was the latest version to make it into "sarge". So now Debian (not upstream) needs to find a way to upgrade users from 2.6.8 to 2.6.12 (or a later kernel). And that process involves finding a way to upgrade both udev and kernel, with the complications caused by the following (from the 2.6.11 kernel README): - Keep a backup kernel handy in case something goes wrong. This is especially true for the development releases, since each new release contains new code which has not been debugged. Make sure you keep a backup of the modules corresponding to that kernel, as well. If you are installing a new kernel with the same version number as your working kernel, make a backup of your modules directory before you do a "make modules_install". The above creates a need to have a single install of udev etc. work with both the current and backup kernel. So the primary criticism is internal to Debian, not against you at upstream. Take care Jakob -- This message is hastily written, please ignore any unpleasant wordings, do not consider it a binding commitment, even if its phrasing may indicate so. Most systems have > I disagree, this is what udev has done since last year and so far > nobody ever complained, so it's obviously not such a bad solution. The current (sarge) udev only disables itself for 2.6.x kernel versions that were never in a stable release of Debian. 2.6.8 IS in a stable release of Debian which makes a huge difference. (P.S. your disabling code apparently forgets to disable udev when running on kernel 0.x or 1.x, but this is truly minor and not worth a bug number). > > > The solution, of course, is blindingly simple: do what lvm has > > done for ages. I will wait for your simple patch then. > Just to clarify: It appears that differences in configuration files and inter-package APIs makes it impractical to have both 0.05x and 0.06x udev on the same system thus ruling out my suggestion (which was just a suggestion), that a dual-personality package could be easier to maintain than other solutions. And the need to permit the presence of 2 or more kernel versions in the lilo/grub/whatever config makes it extremely hard to try to prevent installing udev 0.06x on systems also containing kernel 2.6.8 tucked away somewhere - At least if one wants a smooth and reliable upgrade process from sarge to etch. So this leaves the option of dealing with the bugs that prevent udev 0.060 from working on top of a 2.6.8 kernel. Either upstream or as Debian patches. Which is obviously not going to be a simple patch and far beyond my kernel knowledge. -Jakob Oh and I have been looking up Marco on the net, he seems a really cool guy. -- This message is hastily written, please ignore any unpleasant wordings, do not consider it a binding commitment, even if its phrasing may indicate so. Bug#132399: fix for texinfo2man.c (fwd)
Hello. In Debian Bug#132399 (see http://bugs.debian.org/132399) Matt Kraai reports: The indent manual page uses \' instead of '. This is rendered as an accent, =B4 (0xb4), which displays as a solid box on my console. It only needs to be escaped when it comes at the start of the line, and the appropriate way to escape it is by preceding it with a \& (a zero-width space). Well, I have received a patch from Peter De Wachter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> to fix this bug. Quoting Peter: Hi, I was browsing the help-tagged bugs and this one looked not too hard. It turns out finding good documentation on groff is not that easy at all :) but according to #120306 \(oq and \(cq should be used for left and right single quotes, and the attached patch makes texinfo2man.c do that. Yes. If it will prove to be actually needed I have a backup plan more or less ready for a limited dual-personality package, BUT the old personality would only provide limited functionalities and would not be intented to be configured by users. IOW, it would only work until the end of the upgrade but switching back and forth between kernel versions would not be fully supported and probably many features would not be available. > So this leaves the option of dealing with the bugs that prevent udev 0.060 > from working on top of a 2.6.8 kernel. The dejavu fonts homepage http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page says that these fonts are fonts in Bitstream Vera with added accents to cover Latin Extended, and as I understad it, everything which is in Bistream Vera is in DejaVu also. I just deleted Bistream Vera from my system, and left only DejaVu, and all Western glyphs are still there, and look the same as Bitstream Vera. Please read the homepage and clarify. Bug#317916: Disable Real Mouse During Mouse Emulation
Package: kdebase Version: 4:3.3.2-1 Severity: wishlist I think it would be a good idea to disable events from a real mouse during mouse emulation mode. If someone were to have, to pick a random example from thin air , an IBM ThinkPad with a buggy track-point device that tended to send random, spurious events, it would be completely impossible to use mouse-emulation mode because the garbage events would keep coming through and move the pointer elsewhere despite the best efforts of the person at the keyboard. -- Brian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#316383: problem installing ia32-libs_1.4_amd64.deb
severity 316383 important thanks > from which it would seem that the package is attempting two simultaneous > and conflicting diversions. The preinst script for ia32-libs_1.4 is: #!/bin/sh set -e if [ "$1" = "install" ]; then dpkg-divert --divert /usr/bin/ldd.ia32-libs --quiet --rename --package ia32-libs --add /usr/bin/ldd fi if [ "$1" = "upgrade" ]; then dpkg-divert --quiet --remove /usr/bin/ldd.amd64 dpkg-divert --divert /usr/bin/ldd.ia32-libs --quiet --rename --package ia32-libs --add /usr/bin/ldd fi It sounds like you had a previous version of ia32-libs installed, which was then removed before again trying to install ia32-libs_1.4. Since 1.4 is the first "stable" version of ia32-libs on amd64, however, this doesn't count as a release-critical bug. The workaround for you would be to run the dpkg-divert command manually. The fix for the package would be to check for $2 being set, instead of checking for "$1" = "upgrade". Cheers, -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer

I bet the problem I'm whining about here is fixed, > since it was in 2.6.11. :-) hmm, i'm not sure the alpha configs from the snapshot i took 4 days ago, where already for 2.6.12. nobse is working on it, we should have soon 2.6.12 in the archive also for alpha, please try them out, when they get available. > BTW, I have been avoiding 2.6.11 because sooner or later (5 minutes to > 24 hours or so after booting) I start seeing SCSI underflow errors which > repeat infinitely and things on the system begin to progressively lock > up. > > Let me know how you want to handle it -- my thought is to consider this > problem closed and I will open a new report on 2.6.12 if I see SCSI > errors again. I just don't know if you want > an official bug report or just an email from me. 2.6.12 and 2.6.13 (yes still rc) saw some scsi work if it is reproducible, with newer images seperate bug would be cool (could also be a clone of this one). best regards -- maks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#315793: glibc: found necessary changes to debian/rules

Yes, you're right. I'll put this fix to svn and experimental glibc with some new dpkg/dpkg-dev changes.
