You are probably running unstable, and this is probably related to the
in-progress g++ abi transition:

Changes:
 aspell (0.60.3-2) unstable; urgency=low
  .
  * debian/control: renamed libaspell15 to libaspell15c2 for the
  * GCC 4.0 ABI change transition

If you intend to continue running unstable, you'd better prepare
yourself for more of this.

Actually, these design issues have to be decided by either Matt,
Michael, or other APT-involved people.

I talk to Matt yesterday about the APT manpages. Plans should be to
move them to PO files : keep the English man pages as XML files and
use PO for man pages translations.

There is such work going on for dpkg : I stillm have to talk with
Scott about it and then we will be able to have a look at APT and
convert the man page translation process to use PO, with the help of
po4a which can handle gettext format for both roff man pages and xml
files.

So, actually, I think that it might be a good idea to "forget" about
man pages updatesand especially changing the man pages build
process now.

Bug#317880: hydrogen: French documentation does not display accentuated characters

Hi,

I've noticed a small problem when displaying the French manual and
French tutorial for Hydrogen : the accentuated characters are not
displayed on screen. This looks like an encoding problem in the
documentation (probably encoded in iso8859-N while the documentation
browser expects UTF-8).

Thanks for maintaining the Hydrogen package.

I am currently running NetworkManager which writes the resolv.conf file

page, the three "DNS Servers" boxes contain the words 'controlled', 'by',
and 'NetworkManager'. It should be easy to extend that code so that it
recognizes when /etc/resolv.conf is managed by resolv.conf.

Bug#317881: fc-cache is slow, should only run once per apt/dpkg session

2005-07-12 Thread Craig Sanders
Package: fontconfig
Version: 2.3.2-1

fc-cache should only run once per dpkg/apt installation session.
it should wait until dpkg/apt has exited before regenerating the font
cache etcotherwise, it ends up doing the excruciatingly long and slow
process every time a font is installed. it would be better to do it
just once for multiple fonts.

when executed, it should:

if fc-cache is already running, exit.
if apt/dpkg is running, sleep for 30 seconds. repeat until they have exited.

Actually, we did revert to a broken su.

While seeing that several things were broken by the change, I decided
to go one step back and just take time for other people to be able to
fix thei packages.

So, the plan is have one of us writing a small document explaining the
issue, then post to -devel with it, then start a long flamewar, then
have the offending packages fixed to be able to work both ways if they
canthen upload a fixed shadow.

The summertime is probably not very well suited for this, so it may
take a few weeks to complete the process, anyhow.

Your suggestion sounds interesting as well. I will need to put the
"pbuilder and others" people attention to this and make them think
about this transition and the possibility you suggested to have a
transitory period of time. My only concern is that such temporary
package might sound as a bit overkill to solve this problem.

I'm opened and hearing from all of you, folks.

I spoke too soon. I changed the hostname on that page and clicked
"Save" and received an error message: '"controlled" is not a valid
nameserver IP address'. After entering '127.0.0.1' in the first
field and blanks in the others, webmin displays '127.0.0.1',
'controlled' and 'by' as the three addresses. So NetworkManager
isn't really "supported" yet. :/

When I entered some legal addresses and clicked 'Save' again,
webmin did change the hostname.

Complaint: the nsswitch.conf file was written even though I hadn't
changed those settings; the old file was byte-for-byte similar
to the file that was written out. If files aren't changed then
configuration tools should _not_ write them; the ctime should be
preserved.

On a positive note, I am happy to see that webmin does the right
thing in changing the hostname. It changes the name in both
/etc/hostname and /etc/hosts. (It correctly does _not_ add the
hostname as an alias for localhost, as gnome-system-tools
incorrectly does.)

I can verify that this behaviour still exists on the most current

You sound like the perfect candidate, then, since the next step for UML in
Debian is to create new packages which use make-kpkg to drive the build.
kernel-package now includes support for UML, so the old way of packaging it
is obsolete.

I have disabled this translation by just removing "he" in LINGUAS in
configure.in

I have kept the 116_he.dpatch patch alive, however. So, the he.po file
is still added while patching, but it won't be used and compiled to .mo

Bug#317894: logwatch: IgnoreUnmatched vs IngoreUnmatched - typo, not initializing variable and lack of important documentation

2005-07-12 Thread Piotr Krukowiecki
Package: logwatch
Version: 6.1.2-1
Severity: normal

[CC went to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[e-mail has spam trap! Remove _s__p__a__m]

Some scripts check $IngoreUnmatched variable.

First, this is a typo (it should be $IgnoreUnmatched).
[ok, it could be Ingore or Whatever, but let's be consistent]

Second problem is some of them do not initialize this variable.

Here is a list of scripts with a typo:
mallorn:/usr/share/logwatch# grep -r IngoreUnmatched .
./scripts/services/afpd:if (($#OtherList >= 0) and (not $IngoreUnmatched)) {
./scripts/services/pureftpd:if (($#OtherList >= 0) and (not $IngoreUnmatched)){
./scripts/services/vsftpd:if (($#OtherList >= 0) and (not $IngoreUnmatched)){

If you do grep for IgnoreUnmatched you'll allso see that some scripts
do not set $IgnoreUnmatched variable. Namely, they are:
./scripts/services/afpd
./scripts/services/pureftpd
./scripts/services/vsftpd
./scripts/services/qmail
./scripts/services/vpopmail

A correct way of initializing it can be found for example in
./scripts/services/proftpd-messages:
$IgnoreUnmatched = $ENV{'ftpd_ignore_unmatched'};

This also means that a documentation and an example should be added to
/etc/logwatch/ file, like it is for
/etc/logwatch/conf/services/proftpd-messages.conf:
# Set this to 1 if you want to ignore unmatched FTP messages...
$ftpd_ignore_unmatched = 0

I'm having the same issue. This is a Fujitsu P1120 laptop. MSR and

Some time back wmlongrun used to run ok on this system. I tried running
an old manually compiled copy of wmlongrun-0.2 that I had still around
and it errored out on me as well. I suspect kernel changes have broken
the package upstream.

Bug#132451: latex2html: -depth 24 breaks pstoimg [patch]

2005-07-12 Thread Hamish
Package: latex2html
Version: 2002-2-1-10

with respect to the pstoimg Perl script breaking when the -depth 24 or
-color 24 options were used:

(don't know where the other stuff in this bug report came from)

$reduce_color is only getting set if the depth was "1" or "8".
So the $cmd line was adding an empty pipe step in the case of 24bit.

Solutions:

a) in code that sets up "ppmquant 8" or "ppmquant 256" add a test for 24-bitness
and set to "ppmquant 16777216"

or

b) if 24-bit just skip the ppmquant step. Patch for this solution follows.

Thanks for the report. I didn't know that texi2html changed behaviour.

However: Are you mass bug filing all packages having texi2html in the
build-depends? (there must be hundreds of packages like this) Would
not be better to send a message to d-d-a, wait a few days, and only
report bugs for the remaining packages?

Thanks for the very elaborate bug report. The bug tracking system for
ardour upstream is at http://ardour.org/mantis/ If you file the bug
there, the ardour developers can interact with directly with you. If
you make some progress, I'd appreciate a message at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] If you don't want to re-report the bug, I'd be
glad to proxy it. Just tell me.

Thanks!

It should really be tested on plain upstream 2.0.16 before reporting.
Can you try that? I'll then report it upstream and hopefully get a
response quickly.

Ah. Unfortunately, I don't see any way to fix this for the case of libct1,
which is the package being purged and as a result removing the config file
and directory. I would suggest that this is a misuse of purge, really,
since purging means removing all of the config files, and there is a config
file here that I think you don't want to remove.

This could be fixed in libct3 by creating a separate package just to hold
the config file, but that isn't even an issue until the next time libct's
soname changes.

Okay, then, what should I be trying to do, and in which Debian
environment? I have only a Debian/sarge system at present, without the
resources to create an unstable system, at least for a little while.

Martin Schulze wrote:

This is severity inflation: This bug affects a minority of a minority of
users (users who have a proxy that requires a password, have some reason
to use it for apt, and somehow have managed to avoid the inherent
security issues of the http password being sent in the clear over the
network).

> tags 305142 security

The only real solution to this bug is to remove support for passwords in
the proxy setting. Making the file mode 600 by default, or even only if
a password is present cripples the system for regular users by breaking
apt-get source and hardly makes it anymore secure anyway.

Hm. This used to work a long time ago, but was never really tested since
I started to maintain nbd-server, and I don't think it ever really
worked, either.

I guess I'll just have to stop pretending, and remove the mentioning
of port 0 and the inetd support from the documentation for the next
release. It's not all that useful anyway.

In any case, since sarge has been released, the version that is in sarge
can nolonger be updated; you'll have to use nbd-server in daemon mode.

I don't see the problem with this. In same cases we could create a
file with the same permissions as the source file but not in all.
Often gpg does not work on the file but just reads the content. This
common Unix behaviour (cf. cat(1)). If there are concerns, make sure
the umask has ben set properly.

Sor signing confidential files, a detached signature is anyway a
better choice.

Another reason not to change it is that it changes the interface and
thus would break myriads of scripts.

Bug#317900: ecasound freezes the computer under root with double buffering

2005-07-12 Thread Skliarouk Arieh

package: ecasound
version: 2.4.0-1

Hello,

If ecasound runs with double buffering and under root, almost any kind
of termination of the process causes complete computer freeze:
/usr/bin/ecasound -b:4096 -z:db,661500 -r:99 -f:16,2,44100,i -i
alsahw,0,0 -o stdout

It exits properly, if I stop it as follows:
killall -STOP ecasound; killall -KILL ecasound

Another way to stop ecasound safely is to run it with tee like this:
/usr/bin/ecasound -b:4096 -z:db,661500 -r:99 -f:16,2,44100,i -i
alsahw,0,0 -o stdout | tee audio.raw > /dev/null

And then kill the processes in following order and with following delay:
killall -9 tee; sleep 1; killall -9 ecasound

Looks like ecasound does not tolerate any signal when it is in system
call (read kernel mode) of any kind.

Ok, sorry for that little detail. I misread one of your notes to mean that
you needed to upload 0.060 quickly because of 2.6.12.

Oh, it does? Thats really good news to me and settles most of my worries
about devfs going away so quickly. I retract those rants then.

The bug is about the Debian development cycles and is filed against the
Debian packages (in)ability to handle it. Not against upstream udev !

> As Debian seems wed to 2.6.8, devfs is still there, you can still use it.

Debian has not wed itself to 2.6.8 . But Debians "slow" release cycle (and
no other aspect of Debian kernel support, messy or not) means that 2.6.8
was the latest version to make it into "sarge".

So now Debian (not upstream) needs to find a way to upgrade users from
2.6.8 to 2.6.12 (or a later kernel). And that process involves finding
a way to upgrade both udev and kernel, with the complications caused by
the following (from the 2.6.11 kernel README):

 - Keep a backup kernel handy in case something goes wrong. This is
especially true for the development releases, since each new release
contains new code which has not been debugged. Make sure you keep a
backup of the modules corresponding to that kernel, as well. If you
are installing a new kernel with the same version number as your
working kernel, make a backup of your modules directory before you
   do a "make modules_install".

The above creates a need to have a single install of udev etc. work with
both the current and backup kernel.

So the primary criticism is internal to Debian, not against you at
upstream.

Take care

Jakob

apt-get --simulate upgrade output looks like

if ($line =~ m/^Inst\s+\S+\s+.*security/i) {

The last part is probably right out of the Release file, so if your

gcc 4.0 is already in a usable state and is the default compiler in
unstable. According to the C++ transition plan laid out by Matthias, you
should be uploading ecasound2.2 ASAP. If there is some other "turmoil" that
is grounds for delaying the ecasound2.2 upload, please discuss it on
debian-devel.

Some ecasound-using packages must also wait for qt-x11-free, but that
should shake out soon now that xorg-x11 has been uploaded to unstable, and
is still not a reason to delay fixing ecasound2.2.

Heh. Neither did I, until a number of packages failed in this way.

No, I'm reporting bugs against packages that fail to build as my
autobuilder finds them. I'm not sure whether all packages fail, or
just those that use "-split=chapter".

That's a good idea. I'll see if I can figure out exactly which
packages fail to build, then send a message to debian-devel asking if
anyone objects to your plan.

What does strace think the hung process is up to (try attaching to it

To reproduce -- start a new browser, then load http://slashdot.org/,
then press Ctrl-T to create a new tab, where you should load
http://goryachev.org/ (or something that uses XHTML). After that
return to the tab with Slashdot, and then switch to goryachev.org.
You should see that the window title of mozilla-firefox remained
Slashdot's.

This is Debian-specific and could not be reproduced on other systems

Good idea Wolfgang.

That looks like a good idea. I feared the /etc/alternatives/
directory would be considered internal to the alternatives system (in
which case we would have to rely on update-alternative itself to
handle the cascading), but since it is in /etc and not in /var, it may
be allowed to reference it directly.

OTOH it could have made sense to have update-alternative detect it will be
pointing to another alternative, and short-circuit one link by itself.

The current (sarge) udev only disables itself for 2.6.x kernel versions
that were never in a stable release of Debian. 2.6.8 IS in a stable
release of Debian which makes a huge difference.

(P.S. your disabling code apparently forgets to disable udev when running
on kernel 0.x or 1.x, but this is truly minor and not worth a bug number).

Just to clarify: It appears that differences in configuration files and
inter-package APIs makes it impractical to have both 0.05x and 0.06x udev
on the same system thus ruling out my suggestion (which was just a
suggestion), that a dual-personality package could be easier to maintain
than other solutions.

And the need to permit the presence of 2 or more kernel versions in the
lilo/grub/whatever config makes it extremely hard to try to prevent
installing udev 0.06x on systems also containing kernel 2.6.8 tucked away
somewhere - At least if one wants a smooth and reliable upgrade process
from sarge to etch.

So this leaves the option of dealing with the bugs that prevent udev 0.060
from working on top of a 2.6.8 kernel. Either upstream or as Debian
patches. Which is obviously not going to be a simple patch and far beyond
my kernel knowledge.

-Jakob

Oh and I have been looking up Marco on the net, he seems a really cool guy.

Bug#132399: fix for texinfo2man.c (fwd)

2005-07-12 Thread Santiago Vila
Hello.

In Debian Bug#132399 (see http://bugs.debian.org/132399) Matt Kraai reports:

The indent manual page uses \' instead of '. This is rendered as
an accent, =B4 (0xb4), which displays as a solid box on my console.
It only needs to be escaped when it comes at the start of the
line, and the appropriate way to escape it is by preceding it with
  a \& (a zero-width space).

Well, I have received a patch from Peter De Wachter <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
to fix this bug. Quoting Peter:

Hi, I was browsing the help-tagged bugs and this one looked not too

Bug#317911: fakeroot: Needs to update to current dpkg-dev and gcc

2005-07-12 Thread Goswin Brederlow
Package: fakeroot
Version: 1.2.10-0.0.0.1.pure64
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

Hi,

since the release of sarge a few changes have happened and fakeroot
needs to adopt to them:

The current source misbuilds (doesn't build) all biarch systems since
dpkg-architecture added "-gnu" to all gnu name. This of cause makes
any biarch needing package FTBFS on the buildds with fakeroot. There
was a post on debian-devel how to stay compatible with sarge and etch
versions.

The other change is that gcc-4.0 is now the default gcc and fakeroot
should drop the Build-Depends on gcc-3.4 and stick with gcc for amd64
too.

1) There's no way this should be the default. The default should remain
Bitstream Vera.

2) This won't work as this package doesn't contain fonts suitable for

An option is to only support the http_proxy and ftp_proxy environment
variables, but this is painful in other ways (bug #123144).

Another option is to move the proxy settings to a separate file and
read this file too.

Couldn't we automatically (offer to) install the language tasks for all
locales the user has selected in 1st stage (assuming low/medium prio
installation).

This bug was actually fixed quite some time ago (not only in unstable,
but also in the version in stable and testing too), and this report
can be closed.

Bug#317913: logwatch: Fixes for pure-ftpd service

2005-07-12 Thread Piotr Krukowiecki
Package: logwatch
Version: 6.1.2-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

[CC to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[E-mail has a spam trap! Remove _s__p__a__m]

Script for pure-ftpd log checking does not catches file transfers
correctly (at least not with spaces in file names).

Attached patch:
- fixes this problem, making the script catch downloads and uploads
  correctly
- removes catching of 'deleted' files (this needs to be reimplemented; I
can do that if you say that you can't apply the patch without it, but
I think it's worth applying anyway)
- adds ignoring of moved or renamed files (previously they went to
  Unmatched)
- renames $IngoreUnmatched to $IgnoreUnmatched and initializes it from
  $ENV{'pureftpd_ignore_unmatched'}
- adds transfer statistics section and variables connected with it:
  $ENV{'show_data_stats'}, $ENV{'min_avg_file_size'}, $ENV{'top_people_nr'}
(they can be left at their default values)

I'm using pure-ftpd 1.0.19-4

Yes. If it will prove to be actually needed I have a backup plan more or
less ready for a limited dual-personality package, BUT the old
personality would only provide limited functionalities and would not be
intented to be configured by users. IOW, it would only work until the
end of the upgrade but switching back and forth between kernel versions
would not be fully supported and probably many features would not be
available.

These are not bugs, but rather fundamental design features.

???

The dejavu fonts homepage
http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
says that these fonts are fonts in Bitstream Vera with added accents to
cover Latin Extended, and as I understad it, everything which is in
Bistream Vera is in DejaVu also. I just deleted Bistream Vera from my
system, and left only DejaVu, and all Western glyphs are still there,
and look the same as Bitstream Vera.

Please read the homepage and clarify. As I understand it, DejaVu is
drop-in replacement for Bitstream Vera, which adds some character
ranges, and make Bitstream Vera obsolete.

Bug#308492: mutltiple problem in upgrading cacti from woody to sarge (aptitude)

2005-07-12 Thread Julien Tayon
Package: cacti
Version: 0.8.6c-7
Followup-For: Bug #308492

Well I solved most of problems resulting from thus uypgrade :
1) log were with wrong permission (I had to change permission 755 in
/var/log/cacti/*)
2) then I had the famous 296s exceeded in the log
 07/12/2005 12:44:59 PM - POLLER: Poller[0] Maximum runtime of 296
 seconds exceeded. Exiting.
3) so I launched the php command in the cron.d by hand (I thought
I installed cactid) and it said the cactid path was unknow
su www-data -c /usr/share/cacti/site/poller.php

4) I use the web interface to set up cactid path name

Then I rerun the script by hand and it works

I would say there may miss something in the debian postinst script of
cactid that tells him to update cacti configuration file.

There may miss some chown in /var/log/cactid too

If it can help.

Friendly yours,

Yes. I'm working for creating glibc 2.3.5. Contrary to my
expectation, it seems putting glibc 2.3.5 into unstable needs more
days. The current experimental glibc needs more patches to compile
with gcc-4.0, and we need to check glibc 2.3.5 on 13 architectures
including ppc64.

I'm hard to declare the exact timeframe to upload 2.3.5 for etch.
But, I'm on vacation and I'm at Debconf5 - I can spend extensive time
in this week.

OK. 2.3.5 will be appeared at last - please wait a bit with your
kindful patience.

Bug#317916: Disable Real Mouse During Mouse Emulation

2005-07-12 Thread Brian White

Package: kdebase
Version: 4:3.3.2-1
Severity: wishlist

I think it would be a good idea to disable events from a real mouse
during mouse emulation mode.

If someone were to have, to pick a random example from thin air ,
an IBM ThinkPad with a buggy track-point device that tended to send
random, spurious events, it would be completely impossible to use
mouse-emulation mode because the garbage events would keep coming
through and move the pointer elsewhere despite the best efforts of the
person at the keyboard.

Bug#316383: problem installing ia32-libs_1.4_amd64.deb

2005-07-12 Thread Steve Langasek
severity 316383 important
thanks

> from which it would seem that the package is attempting two simultaneous
> and conflicting diversions.

The preinst script for ia32-libs_1.4 is:

#!/bin/sh

set -e

if [ "$1" = "install" ]; then
dpkg-divert --divert /usr/bin/ldd.ia32-libs --quiet --rename --package
ia32-libs --add /usr/bin/ldd
fi

if [ "$1" = "upgrade" ]; then
dpkg-divert --quiet --remove /usr/bin/ldd.amd64
dpkg-divert --divert /usr/bin/ldd.ia32-libs --quiet --rename --package
ia32-libs --add /usr/bin/ldd
fi

It sounds like you had a previous version of ia32-libs installed, which was
then removed before again trying to install ia32-libs_1.4.

Since 1.4 is the first "stable" version of ia32-libs on amd64, however, this
doesn't count as a release-critical bug. The workaround for you would be to
run the dpkg-divert command manually.

The fix for the package would be to check for $2 being set, instead of
checking for "$1" = "upgrade".

Cheers,
