Perhaps, although I'm not convinced without further
investigation. (and I need to read through #251067 in depth when I
have a lot more free time..)

Can you "print to file" and capture one of these bogus (postscript)
print jobs? Then at least we have something to pull apart and
investigate. You might want to make it available somewhere and
publish the location until this bug is resolved (since debbugs doesn't
really like larger attachments).

Hmm, this suggests that there's a file descriptor problem somewhere, and
some information that's supposed to be sent to syslog is somehow ending up
on the winbind socket... I'm not sure whether this explains the whole
failure you're seeing, though.

Meaning that some Windows clients are able to connect to the Samba server
using their ADS credentials? Or are these pre-ADS clients?

The next version of Quod Libet supports eyeD3 modulo a few patches;
unfortunately I haven't gotten any response from Travis yet. Without
them we may have to include a patched copy of the library in the next
version of Quod Libet. :/

But the good news is, either way we'll be able to drop python-id3lib
from Debian soon.

Bug#251067: another indication that it might be the defoma hint-files

2005-06-23 Thread Andrew Young
If you read German, take a look at some fossil discussion in

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user-german/2003/02/msg00510.html

where similar difficulties appeared a couple of years ago. The critical
paragraph is the one where the responder says (roughly translated):

I've played around with this a little more and found the only
usable method of installing fonts in the system compatibly with
defoma to be the inconvenient way of individual font packages.
It's certainly tedious, but it works.

Above all, you must build the hint-files yourself, so that it can
sort out the fonts. That's fairly tedious for each font, and the
front-ends [i.e., dfontmgr] do nothing but ask for the same data,
which can get pretty tiresome. ...

Then he gives an example for Arial, with all the details. The problem is
that it's difficult for the average user to figure out what the answers
ought to be for all these items. How do you know what are all the Charset
values to use, for example?

A while back, I tried the defoma script that generated hint-files, and
found that it produced a very bare-bones file for each font. I suspect
that this is a problem with a lot of fonts: not enough info in the
hintfiles to allow the substitution engines in defoma and fontconfig to
make the right choices. I suspect that it's these deficient hint-files
that are letting the software make bad choices; the programs could be
completely bug-free, but with missing or misleading info in the
hint-files, what can it do?

One thing that might be useful would be to try to standardize the
terminology used. For example, defoma seems to choose a slightly
different set of terms to describe font weights, widths, etc. than does
fontconfig. The latter lists a set of values for these things in the
fonts.conf manpage; for defoma, you have to go sort through the perl
scripts scattered all over the system to see what values it looks for.

[While on the subject of terminology: see

http://faustus.dyn.ca/mom/momdoc/appendices.html

for yet another incompatible naming system, devised for groff fonts! ]

That doesn't really help, start-stop-daemon only signals hal to stop.. Can you
do strace -f $(pidof hald) and then do /etc/dbus-1/event.d/20hal stop.. Then we
can see what hal does if it gets the signal to stop.

Also if hal is finaly stopped, do the callout still hang around ?

Bug#315532: asterisk: Buffer overflow in command line parser

2005-06-23 Thread Moritz Muehlenhoff
Package: asterisk
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

An exploitable security problem has been found in Asterisk by Wade
Alcorn:

| There is a programming error in the function that parses commands in the
| Asterisk system. This is used by the manager interface if the user is
| allowed to submit CLI commands. The coding error can result in the
| overflow of one of the parameters of the calling function. That is, the
| command parsing function will return without error. However, the calling
| function will cause a segmentation fault.
|
| If the command string is specifically crafted, is it possible to use
| this stack overflow to execute arbitrary code on the Asterisk system.
| The resulting execution is (typically) run with root privileges.
|
| A command consisting of a recurring string of two double quotes followed
| by a tab character will induce the segmentation fault within a Call
| Manager thread.

The full advisory can found at
http://www.bindshell.net/voip/advisory-05-013.txt

Version 1.0.8 fixes this issue.

Cheers,
Moritz

Bug#315531: circular dependencies

2005-06-23 Thread Sebastian Breier
Package: deborphan
Version: 1.7.15
Severity: wishlist

A circular dependency exists between two packages A and B if A depends
on B and B depends on A. They can only be installed and uninstalled both
at the same time.

As both packages A and B are being depended upon by some other package
(either A or B again), deborphan doesn't report those packages as
orphaned, no matter if they are needed by other packages or only by
themselves.

Daniel Déchelotte has written a patch for deborphan 1.7.14 (available at
[1] as patch, package, ...) that I would really like to see included in
the regular Debian deborphan package.

Bug#315527: Fails the mount a luks fs when there already is a mapped device with that generated name

2005-06-23 Thread Sjoerd Simons
Package: pmount
Version: 0.9.2-0ubuntu1
Severity: minor
Tags: experimental

Hi,

When pmounting a luks crypted device, pmount setups a mapped device for it.
When that name already exits, the mount fails with a somewhat odd error.

  To reproduce:

  $ echo | dmsetup create _dev_sda1
  $ pmount /dev/sda1
  Enter LUKS passphrase:
mount: special device /dev/mapper/_dev_sda1 does not exist
  $

Also after running these command's you'll notice that the _dev_sda1 device is
  indeed gone.

Bug#315521: cupsys: DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="nostrip" produces stripped /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpgltops

2005-06-23 Thread Timo Lindfors
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.1.23-10
Severity: wishlist

Steps to reproduce:
1. DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="nostrip debug noopt" CFLAGS="-g -O0" fakeroot apt-get

2. sudo dpkg -i cupsys_1.1.23*.deb
3. file /usr/lib/cups/filter/hpgltops

Expected results:
1. hpgltops should be unstripped and contain debugging symbols

Actual results:
1. hpgltops is stripped and thus difficult to debug with gdb. "file" outputs
the following:

/usr/lib/cups/filter/hpgltops: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version

Bug#315519: Debian -- Debian BTS - reporting bugs / fai

2005-06-23 Thread Ruediger Oberhage
Package: fai
Version: 2.8.4

Good day,

I want to report two problems with fai, the first one of which I
consider 'important', the second one a nuissance, which could
nevertheless ruin ones day.

The bug: "ftar -1" doesn't work and aborts!
This comes from missing '[...]' brackets around the "$single"
in line 47 of /usr/sbin/ftar
( # if option -1 is set, only one class will be used
[ $single ] && exit 0
)

The nuissance: When there is no further action of altering
the /etc/hosts-file in s fai 'softupdate', a new line containing
the hostname is appended everytime, for me even an invalid one,
because the IP-address variable "$IPADDR" is not set.

The source of this is the line
 echo -e "$IPADDR\t$HOSTNAME.$DOMAIN $HOSTNAME" >>$FAI_ROOT/etc/hosts
in the 'task_prepareapt ()' function in
/usr/share/fai/subroutines-linux.

I've no proper fix for that, as I don't know in what regard it would
interfere with 'normal' operation, but I suggest to execute this
statemen and thus append this line to /etc/hosts only in the case
of a fai 'install', not a fai 'softupdate'.

Thanks for a good product,
 Ruediger Oberhage

Bug#315514: logrotate: Please turn on SELinux support

2005-06-23 Thread Manoj Srivastava
Package: logrotate
Version: 3.7-5.2sel1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi,

Please consider turning on SELinux support for logrotate. It
is as simple as adding libselinux1-dev [!hurd-i386] to the build
depends line, and adding WITH_Se-Linux options to the rules file if
the OS is linux. The patch below does this, and shall not break the
build on non-Linux kernels. This has been tested on non-SELinux
machines to ensure that there is no problem in the general case.

After upgrading bittorrent to 3.4.2-4 it ceased to work - it will

well, the docs may be fixable, but currently dh_install is not a
replacement, if dh_install is not called for all binary packages in
one call to dh_install and you want to have --list-missing working.
dh_movefiles does work in this case.

Bug#315451: laptop-mode-tools: ext3,ext2 not recognized as ext3

2005-06-23 Thread Bart Samwel

Hi Dan,

Apparently there aren't a lot of people using this feature of fstab. I
didn't even know that the possibility existed. :) I'll just check for
pattern ".*ext3.*" or something, and the same for the other fstypes,
because if there is even the remotest possibility that the fs was
mounted as some fstype that needs to be remounted then we should try
remounting it as such.

About the discrepancy between the root fs and the other fses in
/etc/mtab: this file is kept up-to-date by "mount", but it doesn't
actually *know* the root fs type because it is already mounted. With me
at least, /proc/mounts lists the root fs / as being of type "rootfs",
which isn't very enlightening either. That's why the thing simply copies
the fstype of the root fs from /etc/fstab and assumes that is correct.
:) I've seen _many_ occasions where people had actually mounted their
rootfs as ext2 instead of ext3, even though everything reported it as
ext3. This was then caused by a missing module in the kernel at bootup
which was missing from the module loading list in initrd etc..

Regards,
Bart

Bug#303075: O: nemesi -- standards-compliant multimedia streaming client

2005-06-23 Thread Steve Langasek
reassign 315245 ftp.debian.org
retitle 315245 RM: nemesi -- RoQA: orphaned package has never been free of RC
bugs
thanks

This package has obviously never been cared for in Debian, with one upload
ever and that upload containing RC-buggy build-dependencies that were
reported shortly after the upload. There has been no acknowledgement of
this bug after 80 days. Please remove this package from unstable; it can be
re-uploaded when someone is prepared to maintain it properly.

This is around where you have to set the PATH (right after $CHROOTEXEC).
If you set the PATH before $CHROOTEXEC (e.g. when the pbuilderrc is
sourced like below), it'll just get clobbered by $CHROOTEXEC...

Are there any good reasons to not do require dicts to be autobuild,
aside from having to do a transition?

I'll buy that. I could change aspell to use /usr/lib/aspell-auto, and
the only thing that would break would be current dictionaries, right?
If a dictionary were not autobuilt but installed stuff into
/usr/lib/aspell-auto directly from the .deb, would aspell-autobuildhash
be able to cope?

Of course, if both auto and non-auto dicts could share the
/usr/lib/aspell-auto, we might as well go back to just calling it
/usr/lib/aspell...

Yeah. The only real benefit from having a version in the directory name
is to support concurrent installs of incompatible aspells, which of
course we don't need...

the image with my earlier kernels too and got similar oopses, leading me
to the suspicion, that the suspended image is somehow corrupted.
Therefore I have saved a copy of my suspended swapspace where I can do
test if needed.

Regards, David

Yeah, I didn't notice that change until later. I agree that upstream
should have better documented it.

I've forwarded your suggestion to upstream (it seems like a good idea to
me), but I still haven't heard back from him... I'll probably just go
ahead and apply it if I don't hear anything in a couple more days.

Bug#315243: better XFig_empty_lines_after_header patch

2005-06-23 Thread Rafael Laboissiere
Hi Mark,

I noticed that your patch XFig_empty_lines_after_header.diff fails with
the regression-test script attached below. I created a new patch (also

Could you please test it?

Nothing special about that. No unusual characters or something like. And
all fields remain undefined and copied from template. I will send an
exact copy of apppropriate debconf records later today, so you can try to
reproduce the problem.

In fact I found this bug few months ago, but I thought it is my fault.
But now the same things happen with other freshly installed systems, so
I decided to report.

Bug#315467: missing kill-quagga-prompt when upgrading

2005-06-23 Thread Christian Hammers
Hello

On 2005-06-23 Michael Horn wrote:

(lfs = Linux From Scratch?)

The only source of routing table instability is the reconnection that
happens when the old daemon is stopped and the new is started.

So did you check if you are really able to upgrade the BGP server daemon
from OpenBGPd or whichever LFS might use *without* having to reconnect?

BGP uses TCP connections and so far I have never seen a daemon that really
tries to handover a running TCP connection to another daemon or uses a
mini-proxy to keep the real binary behind that (which in both cases would
be far beyond Debian packaging but major work for the authors of Quagga).

I would be interested in a working example on how somebody was able to
do it better to submit it as feature request on
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
(you might want to start a discussion there yourself)

bye,

-christian-

P.S.: I only focused on the above issue. That servers are generally shutdown
immediately
when they are upgraded and thus upgrades of critical packages should only
happen
during maintenance windows, is simply the way Debian works. If you don't
like this,
I'm sorry that I have to recommend you to another distro then.

Bug#315542: hal: opens all disc bays and make floppy drive tick

2005-06-23 Thread Petri T. Koistinen
Package: hal
Version: 0.4.8-2
Severity: normal

I am just wondering is this hal package (and more specifically hald program)
supposed to open all cdrom and dvd drives disc bays (and keep opening them
if you closed them manually) and make floppy drive tick?

If it does what it is supposed to do, why gnome package depends on hal?
I don't want to keep my drives open gathering dust and hear annoying ticking
noise from floppy drive. I got bored with floppy drive ticking already when
I used Amiga. Even then I used program that made ticking sound go away. :-)

Bug#315544: RFP: python-elementtidy -- Read almost arbitrary HTML files into ElementTrees

  Upstream Author : Fredrik Lundh <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Description : Read almost arbitrary HTML files into ElementTrees

The Python ElementTree Tidy HTML Tree Builder (elementtidy) reads almost
arbitrary HTML files into ElementTrees using the HTML Tidy library.

The elementtree library (a lightweight pythonic XML toolkit) is already
packaged. It would be nice to have an accompying package of elementtidy.

Torsten, are you interested in packaging this (as you suggested in the

Bug#315543: mew: when s/mime signing, passphrase prompt doesn't appear

2005-06-23 Thread ANDO Yoko
Package: mew
Version: 1:3.3+0.20040715-6
Severity: normal

I want to sign message with s/mime.
When I set my private key with passphrase, mew stoppt with
message "S/MIME signing..." after "M-x smime-signning-message"
command.

With this time "ps ax |grep openssl" result below:

$ ps ax |grep openssl
 2866 pts/10 Ss+0:00 /home/hemge/bin/openssl smime -sign
 -in /tmp/hemge1564crn/mew1564L2R -out
 /tmp/hemge1564crn/mew1564YAY -outform DER -signer
 /home/hemge/.pki/privkey/client.pem -certfile
 /home/hemge/.pki/ca_cert/issuing-CA.pem

When I executed command same as process 2866, it asked passphrase and I
inputted it. So mew reworked and add new +queue file.

$ /home/hemge/bin/openssl smime -sign
 -in /tmp/hemge1564crn/mew1564L2R -out
 /tmp/hemge1564crn/mew1564YAY -outform DER -signer
 /home/hemge/.pki/privkey/client.pem -certfile
 /home/hemge/.pki/ca_cert/issuing-CA.pem
Enter pass phrase for /home/hemge/.pki/privkey/client.pem:
-> mew rework!

s/mime settings on .emacs file is below:

;;S/MIME setting
(setq debug-on-error t)
;;Main CA files
(setq mew-smime-CA-file "/home/hemge/.pki/ca_cert/ca-root.pem")
;;CA certificate file which signned to mykey
(setq mew-smime-additional-certificates
"/home/hemge/.pki/ca_cert/issuing-CA.pem")
;; my private key and certificate file
(setq mew-smime-digital-id "/home/hemge/.pki/privkey/client.pem")
;; imported public key directory
(setq mew-smime-pubkey-dir "/home/hemge/.pki/smime_pubkey")

I currentry succeed to sign to mail using private key without
passphrase protection, but I think this environment is very
unsecure.

Did you know any antidote? or Its appears only my machine?

Bug#315538: dput doesn't refuse to operate on doubly-signed .changes

2005-06-23 Thread Jeroen van Wolffelaar
Package: dput
Severity: wishlist

dput doesn't refuse to operate on doubly-signed .changes. But katie
will choke on those, and is not able to extract the Uploader, so the
uploader won't get any feedback.

It'd be beneficial for all (uploaders, and ftpmasters who get a mail
when this happens) if dput would warn strongly when it detects a
.changes is signed twice.

Steve Langasek confirmed this package was uploaded with dput.

Package: gozer

Bug#310590: aspell dictionaries depend on libaspell15 package name, that might change

2005-06-23 Thread Agustin Martin
On Thu, Jun 23, 2005 at 05:31:19AM +0300, Brian Nelson wrote:

> Are there any good reasons to not do require dicts to be autobuild,

Not many, I think that even for today's low end computers aspell is
behaving quite efficiently building hashes. I tried in a PII-350 and worked
very reasonably. I do not expect people using aspell having less powerful
computers. The only remaining drawback is that requires more disk space, but
if computer is running with such space limitations, is problematic anyway,
not only because aspell autobuilt dicts take more space (gzipped sources +
hash instead of only hash).

This will be less important once affix compression is implemented in all
dicts. Still need to check this with one of the huge dicts, I think currently
only aspell-gl-minimos uses this compression and works well. I have done
some experiments with aspell-ca and aspell-nl and also seem to work well,

That is not an aspell-autobuildhash problem, but an aspell one, and it deals
with this. Hashes built with aspell-autobuildhash will not be created
there, but in /var/lib/aspell, with

/usr/lib/aspell/$hash.rws -> /var/lib/aspell/$hash.rws

symlinks. Is the same for aspell to find a symlink or the real hash.
Everything else would be installed in /usr/lib/aspell. aspell-autobuildhash
does not fiddle into that directory, but relies on
/usr/share/aspell/$hash.mwl.gz and /var/lib/aspell/$hash.compat.

Agreed,

And that would require duplication of dicts for both versions, with some
apps linked against one aspell and other against the other, and aspell-bin
linked to only one. I think this would be a big mess with a poor benefit.

You can re-enable plaintext logins if you really want:

$ cat /etc/c-client.cf
I accept the risk
set disable-plaintext nil
$

Unfortunately, this is only half-way documented in
/usr/share/doc/libc-client2002edebian/README.Debian, see #266689. I
admit to not really have followed up yet to that bug, but my position
still is that if the 'set disabled-plaintext nil' is documented, the
other line required should be documented too.

Bug#293015: Bug #293015 - openoffice.org-debian-files: IDL Compiler fails

2005-06-23 Thread browaeys . alban

quit

This is a folowup for:
http://bugs.debian.org/293015

the idl compiler is even more borken now that dpkg 1.13 has
entered sid:

In:
/usr/lib/openoffice${VER}/sdk/`dpkg-architecture
-qDEB_HOST_GNU_SYSTEM`//bin/"`basename $0`".bin "$@"

Bits from the dpkg maintainer
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/06/msg00010.html
"However this will break any package that uses the value of
DEB_HOST_GNU_CPU, DEB_HOST_GNU_SYSTEM, DEB_HOST_GNU_TYPE or the
DEB_BUILD_* equivalents and expects to find the string "i386" or "linux"
in them."

this now resolve to linux-gnu instead of "linux".

DPKG_HOST_ARCH_OS looks like the proper replacment (though it
looks like a mistake DPKG_ does not exists, i used
DEB_HOST_ARCH_OS).

Though i wonder if it should be used out of the dpkg system (it
would not work for non debian distributions ... and would require
a dependency on dpkg >= 1.13.5). uname ? how does gcc manages
this ...

After fixing this issue i got:
$ LANG=C linux/bin/idlc idl/com/sun/star/uno/XWeak.idl
linux/bin/idlc: line 5:
/usr/lib/openoffice/sdk/linux//bin/idlc.bin: No such file or directory

... i cannot find such a binary on my system (missing dependency
or not compiled ?)

Alban

Bug#315243: reviewed patches

2005-06-23 Thread Rafael Laboissiere
Mark,

I finished reviewing your patches. Here are the results:

* XFig_text_escape.diff

This one has apparently no effect. Escaped backslashes are correctly read
  without this patch.

* XFig_empty_lines_after_header.diff

This one has a problem because it introduces an extra object when blank
lines are present in the headers. I fixed the problem with another patch
  (see previous message).

* XFig_fix_arrow_shape_bug.diff

This one really fixes the arrow problems and will be included in the next
  version of the package.

* XFig_standard_output_format.diff

This one is cosmetic and too intrusive as regards the upstream code.
Besides, I see no compelling reason for including it. Please tell me
  if I am wrong.

* XFig_unsorted_stuff.diff

This one fixes two bugs that are fixed already in the current Debian
package (see debian/patches/* in the source package). Other chunks add
only reminders and I do not think that they are appropriate for the
  Debian package.

As soon as I get a feedback from you, I will upload a new version to
unstable.

Is libselinux1 going to be "required" or "important" priority in the
next release? If not, I can't do this without violating policy. At the
moment libselinux1 is "optional".

2.5. Priorities
---

Packages must not depend on packages with lower priority values
(excluding build-time dependencies). In order to ensure this, the
priorities of one or more packages may need to be adjusted.

I've never encountered it and can't reproduce it with an arbitrary
table.

Does this problem only occur with a specific table? Does it continue
after you do an "REPAIR TABLE cur EXTENDED;" on it? If you, could you
send me a tabledump or a zipped database file so that I can give it
to the MySQL developers for investigation?

If you know about any anomalies like special charsets, binary data or
table formats else than innodb/myisam for this table it could be good to
know, too.

Bug#315553: Install fails from USB DVD unit

2005-06-23 Thread David Balazic
Package: debian-installer
Severity: important

Debian 3.1 r0a installation from external USB DVD unit fails.

I booted the official debian 3.1 r0a DVD from an external DVD unit connected
over USB2.0.
After the kernel booted , the installer tried to find the boot medium, but
failed.

This is on an AMD Athlon 2200+ machine.

I used the deafult boot option (kerne 2.4.x).

The 2.6 kernel does not have this problem.

Ask me for any details you might need.
