Bug#302025: Related: 'required aliases for standard names' will be fixed?
Package: fontconfig Version: 2.3.1-2 Followup-For: Bug #302025 Related to this bugreport: IMHO the current config file layout has a design bug. fonts.conf includes default settings for fonts which may not even be installed on the user's system, such as the URW fonts and others. However, the user may have installed other font packages, which are not even noted in the fonts.conf file. (e.g. the Japanese Sazanami fonts, the Un-fonts, or the CJK Unifonts (which will be hopefully soon in the main debian repository)). How does the user specify that he wants those fonts included in the settings for 'sans-serif', 'serif' and 'monospace'? Currently these alias settings will be *overwritten* by the fonts.conf file, because they appear in the end of the file after the other user specific config files are read and after the conf.d/ directory has been parsed. What's more: How does a font-package maintainer, like me, specify, that his fonts should be included in the part and have a higher precedence than for example the currently by default defined AR PL fonts, or the Kochi fonts? So, I suggest the following: Provide a 'update-fontconfig' script, which is run everytime after a font package is installed or removed and not only scan for available fonts on the system, but ask the administrator, which of the fonts currently installed should be included in the three groups and in which order. This script should write the config then into the conf.d/ directory and give it a high number, so that it gets loaded as last. However, the local user should always have the possibility to overwrite the settings with his own preferences in ~/.fonts.conf. Bug#300753: Success for jdbc3
Hi, Wolfgang, If all free java sdks implement jdbc3, I don't see any real reason to provide jdbc2 builds at all. AFAIK, JDBC standards are meant to be compatible for older clients, so every jdbc2 app should work fine against jdbc3 implementations. Alternatively, what do you think about having a libpg-jdbc3-java and libpg-jdbc2-java, the first one beeing in main. We could then obsolete libpg-java and make it a virtual package depending on both of them, this would also solve bug #275417 in an elegant way :-) > I had success with using gcj-3.4 as it's based on an older gnu classpath > release. Maybe try against gcj-3.3 or gcj-3.4 - don't know at which > JDBC level they are. Give them a try :-) Okay, I'll do so. But this might lead into a difficult build environment setup including conflicts etc. :-( Markus -- Markus Schaber - http://schabi.de/ But hey!, Standard compliance is something we should strive for, so let's try and change the Standard :-) [Alexandre Oliva, GCC Developer] signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Bug#302134: gnome-volume-manager: gvm doesn't work with usb-storage device for a bug of hal package
Package: gnome-volume-manager Version: 1.2.0-1 Severity: important You should be aware that a bug of hal (#287407) breaks the behaviour of gvm with the usb-storage devices. This prevents me to auto-mount external usb devices with gvm. The maintainer of hal doesn't think to fix the bug soon. You are following up to a completely unrelated bug; the backtraces you provided look nothing like those in the original bug report. In fact, the backtraces you provided don't look like a samba bug at all: if getpwnam() is segfaulting on your system, then you have serious problems that aren't caused by samba. Bug#302136: proxy & auth conflict
Package: apache2 Version: 2.0.53-5 Severity: normal I have a slightly odd apache setup where I basically want to do the following: * use an apache as a reverse proxy for a Zope site, * except for a few specific URLs, for which I require authorized users The configuration I use is: Options+MultiViews ProxyPass /wsvn ! ProxyPass /websvn/! ProxyPass / http://localhost:9000/VirtualHostBase/http/staff.attingo.nl:80/s taff/VirtualHostRoot/ AuthName"Attingo Staff Portal" AuthTypeBasic AuthLDAPEnabled On AuthLdapURL ldap://server:389/dc=base,dc=domain?uid?sub AuthLDAPGroupAttribute memberUid AuthLDAPGroupAttributeIsDN off Require valid-user /wsvn is a bit special: it is actually wsvn.php but with the help of multiviews I use it as /wsvn//, similar to the setup on svn.debian.org. The problem is this: when I go to /wsvn/ apache still proxies the request to the zope instance instead of processing it itself. But if I remove the 'Require valid-user' statement it stops proxies it and processes the request correctly. Bug#302138: incorrect Description line wrapping with bullet lists
Package: linda Version: 0.3.10 Severity: wishlist ObListCC: search for 'mass bug' below. Lots of packages have a Description field that includes a bullet list. There is no good way to do these, unfortunately, but lots of wrong ways. In particular, you'll cause incorrect line wrapping in dselect or aptitude if you don't indent each bullet by at least one space. Take for example db4.1-util 4.1.25-18: | This package provides different tools for manipulating databases | in the Berkeley v4.1 database format, and includes: | - db4.1_archive: write the pathnames of the log files no longer in use. | - db4.1_checkpoint: daemon process to monitor the database log and checkpoint | it periodically. | - db4.1_deadlock: traverse the database environment lock region and abort | lock requests when a deadlock is detected. The first 4 lines will wrap freely, which is wrong, and the "it periodically" won't wrap back to the previous line, which is also wrong. The best way to do bullet points is to indent the line with the bullet character on it. Another way is to separate bullet points with " ." lines, instead of indenting them. Either way you must _not_ indent any followup lines. Neither form renders ideally well, but at least they word-wrap correctly. I'd like to file a mass bug for these, but it's on the order of 583 binary packages in 430 source packages, so I obviously want to get some feedback first. Common bullet characters are "-", "*" and "o". Linda could flag a warning if a description includes the regex "^ [-*o] " which does not immediately follow "^ \.$". That's one problem case. The other would be a line "^ *[-*o] " followed immediately by "^ " but not another "^ *[-*o] ". Please find attached a quick perl script I cooked up for piping a Packages file into, as proof of concept. #!/usr/bin/perl -nl BEGIN { print "# issue_1: line starting with bullet wraps to previous line"; print "# issue_2: line following bullet doesn't wrap with it"; print "#"; print "# SRC_PKG BIN_PKG - problem"; sub whine { my ($n) = @_; if (!$inf[$n]->{$p}++) { print "$s $p - issue_$n" } } } chomp; if (m/^Package: (.*)/) { $s = $p = $1 } if (m/^Source: (.*)/) { $s = $1 } if (!$dot and m/^ [-*o] /) { whine(1) } if ($bul and m/^ / and !m/^ *[-*o] /) { whine(2) } if ($_ eq ' .') { $dot = 1 } else { $dot = 0 } if (m/^ *[-*o] /) { $bul = 1 } else { $bul = 0 } signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Ideally, these packages would add a file to /etc/fonts/conf.d to insert themselves into the appropriate alias. Figuring out correct priorities among the various fonts may require smarter configuration scripts than we have at present, but mostly the language tagging helps sort things out automatically. > Currently these alias settings will be *overwritten* by the > fonts.conf file, because they appear in the end of the file after the > other user specific config files are read and after the conf.d/ > directory has been parsed. No, the order is intentionally this way so that the user aliases are highest priority, followed by the local.conf and conf.d aliases. The system supplied aliases are last. Each set of aliases are inserted immediately before the generic name, so the user aliases end up closest to the front of the list when the process is complete. The only thing which doesn't currently follow this model is the selectfont mechanism which has the accept statements override the reject statements. I don't quite know how to solve this problem... Ok, if this is the case, can you please provide some documentation and/or example config files for font-package maintainers, how to write such scripts? Ho do I specify, that my fonts provide characters for simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean and HKSCS (Hong Kong) and thus should have higher priority than the existing CJK fonts? Also they should appear in the sections before other CJK fonts. :) Thanks for the explanation Arne -- Arne GÃtje (éçè) <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (Spam catcher. Address might change in future!) Indeed, you were right: after activating the hddtemp daemon, gkrellm now correctly displays the HDD temperature. I suggest then that you add a small note in the file README.Debian warning the user about this, something like this: Using hddtemp with gkrellm -- To use hddtemp functionality with Gkrellm, you need to activate hddtemp daemon feature listening on port 7634. You can do this with 'dpkg-reconfigure hddtemp'. BTW there is a small bug in hddtemp debconf templates: it still references gkrellm-hddtemp while it should be gkrellm itself. I will file a minor bug for this. Thanks again! Fred -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That's not the niche I'm aiming to fill. Have you considered using Jed? I looked at jed for the first time yesterday. I was mostly impressed. I was not impressed by the selection of bold typeface for most text on syntax-highlighted listings. jed's barrier to entry is higher than Zile v1 but lower than Zile v2/Emacs. The barrier to using jed would have been much higher without the permanent F10 prompt. This prompts the user to hit F10 which in turn activates drop-down menus. These menus are fairly obvious to use and expose many available functions directly and provide the emacs key binding equivalents. Once I have found a way to invert jed's use of bold on listings, I would find it a suitable replcement for zile ver.1. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". That's the whole point of double-space indenting a part of the description. Let the tools word-wrap it, rather than having the maintainer guess how wide everyone's terminal will be. But that is, perhaps, a point on which reasonable people can disagree - not least because my suggestion makes 'apt-cache show' a little bit less pretty. Omitting the check for forced word-wrapping in bullets cuts down the list of offenders drastically. It isn't that obsolete yet, sarge will release with linuxthreads for about half the architectures (including powerpc). Bug#299917: aewm++: ftbfs [sparc] hardcoded -march=i686
> g++ -O2 -g -Wall -g -O2 -march=i686 -Wall -DSHAPE -Iusr/X11R6 Seems to me that adding the "ADDITIONAL_CFLAGS" to the $(MAKE) invocation in debian/rules should fix this. It results in the following compilation command: g++ -O2 -g -Wall -DSHAPE -Iusr/X11R6 Thus, only the repeated -g and -O2 options and the wrong -march=i686 option are removed. This should be a pretty safe change. I tried such a build on powerpc and it built properly. I don't have a non-i386 machine to test this on, however. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#250202: Standardizing make target for 'patch' and 'upstream-source'
On Wednesday 30 March 2005 07:47, Brendan O'Dea wrote: > In the absence of details, or an even partial implementation I can only > see the current (ab)usage of build systems continue. > > Shoot, I might just write a "dpkg-source -b" replacement myself to > replace my current manual process of patch management. If one consideres the proliferation of build-systems as a sign for the need of different people to handle patch-management differently (compare to the various build systems besides debhelper) then a simple dpkg-source -b probably won't make the cut for everyone. Debians build system always had the nice property that it specified a very rigid, rich and reliable interface whithout presuming anything about the implementation. As a minimalistic approach in this tradition, we should identify what is needed(1) by the users of a source package and how this can be interfaced(2) on a very high level. Implementation(3) can then be done in the individual patch management systems as appropriate. (1) Needs - Users of a source package need the unpacked source not ready for compilation, but ready for inspection and modification. The two major use cases are application of (minor) local modifications (security fixes, compile time options) and manual or automated inspection of the sourcecode (auditing, searching). This should be possible without installing additional packages besides dpkg-dev. (2) Interface - To prepare the sourcecode for inspection and/or minor modifications an additional argument for debian/rules would fit well into the current model. Calling "debian/rules prepare" should leave the tree in a state where the source is unpacked, all patches are applied and any change to the tree would affect the final binaries. This target should execute without any Build-Depends installed. Though - as a intermediate step - it would be appropriate to error out with a appropriate message explaining the needed packages and steps to manually prepare the source. (3) Implementation -- For most patch systems the prepare target can be easily implemented by depending on the appropriate patch targets. Some care has to be taken to supply the needed code to be independant of the Build-Depends. "dpkg-source -x" should not default to "prepare"-ing the source since this is automatically done for building anyways and would be bad security practice. Bug#293126: From Nallys
>From nallys Mail Lot 2264 Rue de Jardin Cocody, Abidjan - Cote D'Ivoire, West Africa. Dearest One, Greetings to you. Probably this message will sound so strange to you being the first time of reading my letter In brief, I am nallys attah from South Africa, but at the moment I am living here in Abidjan Cote D'Ivoire in west Africa for some couple of months for a contract. I am a young lady of 34, having the position of Marketing Agent in South Africa. I was lucky to meet Mr. Richard Rouget on the 30th November 2002 in South Africa, however this young man is a France origin but nationalised in South Africa, what I was actually going to say is that Mr. Rouget told me on the same day that he was having a personal contract with President LAURENT GBAGBO of Cote D'Ivoire, for recruiting soldiers. In that he told me that since I am having the position of Marketing Agent, that I should take up the contract of supplying Arms to President GBAGBO. Some weeks later, he took me down to Cote D'Ivoire here to sign with the President and carry out my duty. After every signatory has been done, President GBAGBO signed with the sum of (€32.9 m) Thirty two million, nine hundred thousand Euro cash, this money was arranged in a trunk box, the president advised us after the payment that we should not take the box to the bank, rather we should be taking the money little by little because this contract was not official, its personally for him. The following day, Mr. Rouget brought an idea of depositing the box containing the money in a security house for safe keeping in order not to have any problem at the bank, we then agreed and take the box to a private security House, on getting there the box was declared and registered with the company as family treasures, after paying their daily charges for one month, Mr. Rouget instructed them to use my name as the owner, after that an agreement was signed with them which a copy was given to us, a lodgement receipt and payment receipt was also issued to us in my name, Mr. Rouget come to know all these because he was formerly in the France military before he nationalized in South Africa. On my serious arrangement for the purchase of the arms, after a reconciliation accord held in France on the 25th and 26th January 2003 by the UN, EU and African Community, for the crises in Cote D'Ivoire. The President instructed us to hold on, but to my greatest surprise on early July 2003, he told me that he will be making a trip to South Africa, of which I disagreed but he couldn't hear my voice. On the 26th July 2003 I heard over the news that Mr. Rouget has been arrested at the Johannesbourg International airport South Africa, he was accused for being involved in training rebel soldiers, then on the 1st of August 2003 he was sentenced to five years imprisonment. Today I have decided to have my way with the money out of Cote D'Ivoire to your country because I cannot go to South Africa. I am asking you to assist me in lifting this money to your country and also help me to re-locate there. Now all the documents are with me and they are bearing my name, since Mr. Rouget is in prison and the president do not know my way about, so let us do this as early as possible. As soon as I receive your positive response, we shall discuss your percentage for helping me. I will also forward to you my International passport for identification purpose. Bug#302161: Request for syncekonnector
Package: kitchensync Version: 4:3.3.2-2 Severity: wishlist Hi :) It would be very useful to have this Konnector included in Debian's KDE 3.4.0 release since it permits Address/Calendar/Tasks/Contacts syncronisation with Pocket PC (Windows Mobile) devices. https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/kdepim-users/2005-March/003934.html The build is a straightforward ./configure and make - just with a lot of dependencies! :) It seems a shame to have already all the Raki / RAPIP / SynCE / multisynk framework in place for KDE 3.4.0 and miss this. I'm aware that this may already be planned, but it'd be nice to know that when KDE 3.4 hits unstable this konnector will be present. Bug#302166: guarddog cannot update inet iface - error in ppp script
Package: guarddog Version: 2.4.0-1 Severity: important /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/50guarddog #!/bin/sh # If we are being called by ifupdown when it changes a PPP interface, # and if the appropriate file is in place to do this for PPP anyway, # don't do anything. [ -x /etc/ppp/ip-up.d/50guarddog -a "$MODE" = "start" -a "$METHOD" = "ppp" ] && exit 0 [ -x /etc/ppp/ip-down.d/50guarddog -a "$MODE" = "stop" -a "$METHOD" = "ppp" ] && exit 0 # setup guarddog firewall if [ -x /etc/rc.firewall ]; then /bin/bash /etc/rc.firewall fi the two ppp check had to be removed from the ppp scripts else they never execute. same for ppp down scripts Thanks for the package, with a few customized rules it provide a good set of rules that fit really well for desktop use. The only way to do better would ba a dbus listener that ask if we want to open a port when an application needs it, closing afterwards :) Alban -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.11-rc5 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages guarddog depends on: ii gawk 1:3.1.4-2 GNU awk, a pattern scanning and pr ii kdelibs4 4:3.3.2-4.0.2 KDE core libraries ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.17-1Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libc62.3.4-2 GNU C Library: Shared libraries an ii libgamin0 [libfam0c1 0.0.21-1Library for the gamin file and dir ii libgcc1 1:4.0-0pre9 GCC support library ii libice6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libidn11 0.5.13-1.0 GNU libidn library, implementation ii libpng12-0 1.2.8rel-1 PNG library - runtime ii libqt3c102-mt3:3.3.4-1 Qt GUI Library (Threaded runtime v ii libsm6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 X Window System Session Management ii libstdc++5 1:3.3.5-12 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 X Window System protocol client li ii libxext6 4.3.0.dfsg.1-12.0.1 X Window System miscellaneous exte ii libxrender1 0.8.3-7 X Rendering Extension client libra ii xlibs4.3.0.dfsg.1-12 X Keyboard Extension (XKB) configu ii zlib1g 1:1.2.2-4 compression library - runtime -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe".
