Bug#290338: ara FTBFS bogus

2005-01-24 Thread Goswin von Brederlow
severity 290338 important
thanks

Hi,

you filed a bugreport about ara FTBFS but that report is bogus:

deian/control:
| Package: ara
| Architecture: alpha amd64 arm hppa i386 ia64 powerpc sparc

Ara now builds arch:all bytecode for archs that don't have native code
and does no longer need to be build on several archs, including , but
not limited to, m68k.

The following has to happen now:

1. add ara to the arch exclude list for the unwanted archs
   (avoid further FTBFS)

Can you do this Christian?

2. remove obsolete debs from unwanted archs to allow testing
   transition

This needs to be told to ftp-master preferably by the maintainer.

MfG
Goswin

Bug#267799: nvidia module not autoloading

2005-01-24 Thread Vassilii Khachaturov
> Why can't the package just be modified so that the postinst does an 'echo
> nvidia >>/etc/modules' if it is not already in there?

While this is an acceptable workaround while they look for a real
solution, in general, this is not a very good thing to do. Not
everybody wants to have X to start up on boot via xdm/kdm/gdm/whateverdm,
so loading nvidia is also unneeded in that case (when loaded, it consumes
resources -- by allocating kernel memory, installing the interrupt handler etc.)

Also, if you are trying to isolate a reason for a crash that you suspect is a
kernel bug unrelated to nvidia, you must do it w/o loading the modules like
nvidia that taint your kernel, otherwise the kernel developers will typically
disregard your report.

* I have a Qwerty (104) keyboard, and had difficulty:
  * finding it in the list (I choose English US and I hope that is Qwerty)
  * getting it in QWERTY mode (and not AZERTY ...)

==> proposed solution: in my view, a keyboard is not associated
with a country, but with a lay-out of the keys. So naming it as

* "QWERTY-US"
* "QWERTY-UK"
* "QWERTZ-DE"
* "AZERTY-BE-latin1"
* "AZERTY-BE-latin2"

* disk partitioning:

(I have used fdisk for years and that just worked fine, and was
 also much faster ...)
  * I tried to salvage an existing /home partition, but I didn't
understand how that should have worked and lost it (no big
deal, this is a test machine, with no real data).

Hi,

This is strange. It must be an indirect dependency because it
does not show in the dependencies on i386. My guess is that there is
a missing dependency in libopenal. Could you please

apt-cache depend libopenal0

I have closed #258500. For reference, this can be done by
sending a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Where 258500
is whatever bug you want to close. The contents of the mail will
end up appended to the bug report.

Is this the same problem as 286939, just with a slightly different
version of the kernel. If so it probably would be better to just add to
that bug. I have reassigned them both to kernel-source-2.4.27 and
merged them for now.

Not a big deal in any case.

This is quite curious indeed.

What I am a little curious about is, does the medley driver rely on
accessing the discs through the siimage (or sata_sil)? If so, do
you have one of those loaded in your debian install before trying
to load the medley driver? If not, can the drivers co-exist, it
sounds like they can from your Knoppix experience, but perhaps
trying debian without siimage or sata_sil loaded might help.

I had a look at the source for the medley driver, and it doesn't seem
to have been updated for quite some time, and the latest version seems
to be both in the kernel.org and debian kernels. So it is likely that
knoppix has the same driver. I confirmed that medly.c was the same for
all of these kernels.

For reference, here is the home of the driver
http://www.infowares.com/linux/#medley

If that is so, that's a bug in the kernel, as it's /supposed/ to
support cramfs initrd. At least, what I based the bug report on is the
change that was made to init/do_mounts.c that indicates that cramfs
 should work:

I have not tested it myself, though, as I've migrated to 2.6 a long
time ago and have also burned all bridges going back to 2.4 (nothing
 in /dev/, LVM2, etc..)

 > Instead, kernel-package should probably check the kernel version

My impression is that Manoj is loath to include any version-specific
code in make-kpkg, so I assumed it would be futile to ask this. :-)

Bug#280287: KMail Problem still exists - some digging

2005-01-24 Thread Helmut Toplitzer
Problem still exists in
kdepim 4:3.3.2-1 :-(

But tested serveral things. Findings:

Problem exists only if "Send Now" is selected.
Temporarly storing and sending afterwards ("Send Later")
fixed the problem.

So maybe the bug is inside these lines:

kmsender.cpp
--
send( : 116
--
//Ensure the message is correctly and fully parsed

Bug#291957: lm-sensors: Bug in pwmconfig script when handling temporary files

2005-01-24 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña

Package: lm-sensors
Version: 1:2.9.0-8
Priority: normal
Tags: patch

There is a bug in the pwmconfig, it would be a security bug if it would
use /tmp instead of /usr/tmp but it's a bug nevertheless. The attached
patch fixes the issue and introduces safe handling of temporary files
at the same time.

Hi,

I would like aptitude to invoke checkrestart right before exiting back
to the shell prompt. That way, one would be reminded that services
need restarting.

Please consider adding a hook to be called right before exiting.

Bug#254837: Patch for the upcoming NMU

2005-01-24 Thread Christian Perrier
As announced, a NMU has been prepared which fixes this bug (French
translation) as well as adds several other translations I got from the
debian-i18n mailing list contributors.

Some trivial fixes (lintian warnings, etc.) have also be included in this NMU.

The NMU has just been uploaded to DELAYED/2-day and will thus reach
unstable in 2 days, as announced.

I have subscribed to the package tracking system so that I can notice any
problems induced by this NMU.

Changelog:

oops (1.5.23.cvs-2.1) unstable; urgency=low

  * NMU with maintainer's agreement for fixing longstanding l10n bugs
  * Add '--disable-static-modules' to the configure arguments. Makes the
configure script to choose to link to the shared libraries '-lcreposix
-lcre' instead of the static libraries '/usr/lib/libcreposix.a
/usr/lib/libcre.a". Thanks to Andreas Jochens for the patch
Closes: #231924
  * Fix spelling in package description. Closes: #268533, #277245
  * Debconf translations:
- French completed. Closes: #254837
- Czech added. Closes: #287540
- German updated. Thanks to Joerg Rieger
- Russian updated. Thanks to Yuri Kozlov
- Traditional Chinese updated. Thanks to Asho Yeh
- Danish updated. Thanks to Claus Hindsgaul
- Dutch updated. Thanks to Luk Claes
  * Lintian fixes:
- arrange for avoiding an initial capital letter in description synopsis

Bug#291600: Bug #291600: gibraltar-bootcd is potentially undistributable

2005-01-24 Thread Goswin von Brederlow
Hi,

going to the RC bugs I saw this one and having worked on other
packages that reuse debs or sources I have some things to add:

1. You can not assume /etc/apt/sources.list or even network access is
functional inside the buildd chroot. You may not use the outside
network at all during build. This is an unwritten policy.

2. You can not include (GPL) binaries in a deb without including the
source in the source package. Your gibraltar-bootcd deb can stay
around for a long time while the sources/debs you used get
updated. That would mean that you have binaries without source in
your deb. That is a violation of the DFSG for one thing and a
   violation of the binaries licences.

Compare with amd64-libs, which is the latest such package being added
to debian. ftp-master insisted on amd64-libs having sources included.

Bug#291952: ia32-libs: Source package does not include source

2005-01-24 Thread Goswin Brederlow
Package: ia32-libs
Version: 0.7
Severity: serious
Justification: DFSG

ia32-libs contains a bunch of deb files that might have version skews
compared to the debian archive. Any such version skew results in a deb
without source in clear violation of the DFSG and the packages
license.

I know it sucks to include all those sources but for amd64-libs
ftp-master insisted on including it and for the same reason ia32-libs
must too.

Bug#291953: mkinitrd mistetects root as being on a DM device

2005-01-24 Thread Tore Anderson

Package: initrd-tools
Severity: important

Some time ago, mkinitrd began failing on me. The error message is
"Root is on a DM device, but dmsetup not installed". However, this is
incorrect - / is on /dev/hda5, a very normal ATA hard drive. There are
some LVM stuff on the machine, but not the root file system, so there
should be no need to touch any DM/LVM stuff during the initrd phase of
system startup. (Indeed, it never has either until recently.)

Severity set to important because this makes it impossible to install
 kernel-image debs.

Installing dmsetup fixes the problem though, the resulting initrd is
 bootable.

The KDE Screensaver has it's own password dialog, and this will conflict
with xscreensaver's one. The kdesktop_lock Program requires the screensaver
to run on the root window and will grab the keyboard and mouse, it calls
the *.kss with "-root" and not with "-lock". I only have looked at
at my system and that was what happens. If you apply the patch, the
hack will run in KDE's root window, and on mouse
or keyboard activity KDE's password dialog will come up and kill this root
window and the screensaver hack.
I know that my patch is evil, you probably know a better way to get
the configured hack out of ~/.xscreensaver :-)

cheers,

Peter

First of all, I must admit that I don't have much experience with C. But
still I have some critical remarks to this:

- We couldn't reproduce the bug here, and it is in a function that works
on time data. Could it be that it is your (Prabhu's) timezone or
locale setting that is necessary to reproduce the segfault?

- Wouldn't it be better to find some clever way do dynamically allocate
just as much memory for the date_string array as is needed? Especially
when it is about timezone or locale, I suspect that sooner or later
there will be one where even the 32 chars won't be sufficient.

I wanted to have a look how hevea works. Reading
man hevea
I was told:
On a Debian system it [the help] can also be accessed at
/usr/share/doc/hevea-doc/html or through the Debian help
system, provided the package hevea-doc is installed.

Trying to install hevea-doc yields:
thirtyto:~# env LANG=C apt-get install hevea-doc
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Package hevea-doc is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package hevea-doc has no installation candidate

Since hevea Suggests hevea-doc which is not available I use this
urgency.

Btw.: What ist the »Debian Help System«?

I think you're right that it would be prudent to document that the types
are the same format as that returned by `gcc -dumpmachine` and require
canonicalisation.

It's a wishlist bug, so I've always understood those are closed rather
than wontfix'd -- unless they're popular enough for people to keep
reopening them.

Bug#288464: Patch for pytables 0.9.1-1.1 NMU

2005-01-24 Thread Francesc Alted
Hi Luk,

Thanks for your help in fixing those bugs. The fact is that they were
addressed some time ago, and I was waiting for my sponsor (Daniel Bungert)
to upload the new version.

However, Daniel seems to be rather busy during the last times, so, if you
are willing to upload yourself the new version, I'll be more than happy. You
can find the new maintainer version at:

http://pytables.sourceforge.net/Debian/

Bug#291831: po4a: some errors with with d-i manual's xmlw files

thanks

Hello,

as you may know, I'm also part of the upstream for po4a. Unfortunately, I'm
not the one who did the Xml module (the one you use, right?). I thus
forwarded the mail to the upstream mailing list so that Jordi get a chance
to look at this. If he can't, I'll try to dig into his code but I would
naturally prefer avoiding steping on his feets.

Thanks for this great bug report and for your interest in po4a,
Mt.

Bug#291843: sarge: /dev/dsp is not created

2005-01-24 Thread Patrick M. Ammann
Hello

I am using a 2.6.8 kernel, all needed kernel sound modules
seems to be loaded.

I was able to manually create the /dev/dsp node and then the sound
worked fine.

However i just recognized that i have installed
udev. When i execute /dev/MAKEDEV audio nothing is added, but after
running alsaconf, it created /dev/audio. but when i rebooted the
/dev/audio was no longer there and the execution of /dev/MAKEDEV did
not create the /dev/audio.
There seems to be 2 bugs: 1: MAKEDEV needs to recognize my soundcard and
2: MAKEDEV needs also to create /dev/dsp* + /dev/mixer*

This is the unchanged value, as the file is included in the deb. So far,
so good.

>> grep trie_size /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf
>
> [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ grep trie_size /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf
> % `ssup_trie_opcode' and `ssup_trie_size' in tex.ch (and rebuild TeX);
> trie_size = 64000

texmf.cnf is created from files in /etc/texmf/texmf.d/, and therefore in
an ideal world the value should be the same here. It is not, and this
indicates either a bug, or that someone has edited the file - which is
allowed, of course, but done on one's own risk. If that "someone" is an
other package, as you suspect, this would be a grave bug, of course, and
it would be really good if we could find this out.

To find out what happened, please do the following, and send us the
output:

grep texmf.cnf /var/lib/ucf/hashfile
md5sum /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf
update-texmf -d

If it asks you about changes made, you can look at the diff, but for
debugging purposes, you should choose not to accept the maintainer
changes, as suggested, but keep your installed version. After this do
again:

grep trie_size /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf
grep texmf.cnf /var/lib/ucf/hashfile
md5sum /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf

If after the call to update-texmf the trie_size in texmf.cnf is still
not 262000, please go on like this:

Open /etc/texmf/texmf.d/95NonPatch.cnf in an editor and change an
arbitrary comment. For example, go to the line before the trie_size
setting and write something like

% this must be at least 262000

After this, run "update-texmf -d" again. Now it should really display a
dialog: It should tell you that there are changes that need to merged,
and offers you to show the differences. Please look at the differences.

If the only difference is the comment you added and the setting of
trie_size, please accept the "maintainer changes" - this means the
changes that come from the files in texmf.d. If there are more
differences, things are more difficult. It might be that you or some
other admin on that machine edited the file, and the changes actually
make sense - then it would be advisable to also make the changes in the
respective file in texmf.d - then update-texmf will no longer ask you.

If you don't have any idea where those changes might come from, it might
in fact be that some other package did these changes in a wrong
way. Please send us the diff - you need not copy&paste it. Instead,
simply chose to _not_ accept the "maintainer" changes, and look at the
filename that is displayed in the end, something like

Keeping temporary file /tmp/tmp.rB9Inp/texmfXko4iou

You can then make a diff between this file and /etc/texmf/texmf.cnf.

Bug#268377: Bug#291939: Support for arch aliases (Was: Split System/Cpu for architecture handling)

2005-01-24 Thread Guillem Jover
Hi,

I've been thinking on implementing this for a long time. As
Robert has presented an implementation to the Architecture
handling problem that does not convince me at all, so instead
of just sitting here and criticize his design I've coded mine.

The idea is to introduce architecture aliases, they will only take
effect on the source package and will get expanded when building
the binary package so there's not need to touch major infrastructure
to support this, also they respect current syntax. They can be used
on Build-Depends and friends and on Architecture fields on specific
packages.

The aliases are of the form:

  Alias Example Expansion

  -any hurd-anyhurd-i386
linux-any i386 powerpc alpha arm ...
  any- any-i386hurd-i386 kfreebsd-i386 i386 ...

There are two other cases just for consistency:

  linux- linux-i386 i386
any-any any

I've a added as well a new option (-n normalize) to dpkg-architecture
so Maintainers can use it to get the alias expansions. Try it to see
the results.

regards,
guillem

Bug#291963: PATCH: magic numbers for GNU findutils

2005-01-24 Thread James Youngman
Package: file
Version: 4.12-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hello,

Here are the magic numbers for the database used by the "locate" program
of GNU findutils. The findutils suite currently supports two formats
of locate database, its own (LOCATE02, for which magic numbers appear
below) and the traditional format. The traditional format is hardly
ever used these days, but in any case does not have an obvious magic
number. The supplied magic numbers take into account any possible
new format (this is a policy decision on my part - I maintain findutils).

Not sure if my use of "\b" is legitimate, but it follows existing
examples in the magic file.

Bug#291962: postgresql: Multiple unsafe /tmp usage in build scripts and tools and some fixes to maintainer scripts

2005-01-24 Thread Javier Fernández-Sanguino Peña

Hi postgresql maintainer,

I've been auditing postgresql as part of an auditing effort within the
work of the Debian Security Audit team [1] looking for security bugs
that might be used for symlink attacks in temporary directories.
Reviewin postgresql code I've found a lot of scripts which don't use
temporary directories safely:

- temporary files are created based on the $$ construct, which can be
known in advance by an attcker enabling him to construct a
symlink attack (either because it is used multiple times in
files that are created throughout the script or because the PID range
  used can be estimated)
- scripts don't honor $TMPDIR and just drop their stuff in /tmp
  directly
- scripts remove files in traps or on startup which might not have been
  created by the script itself.

(Debian specific)
- scripts could use -t in mktemp calls instead of ${TMPDIR:-/tmp}
(the -t call adds additional checks, see the manpage)
- one script (debian/enable_lang.in) does not check mktemp's
return value and is not running with -e
- the postinst script makes temporary files world-readable when they
might contain sensitive information (such as database dumps)

As said above, I don't find these issues particularly troubling since
the tools are only used on build systems and that code is not
provided to end-users, that's why I'm labeling this bug as 'important'
and not a higher priority ('grave' is usually attached to these kind
of bugs)

Attached is a proposed patch to fix the above issues. It's not tested,
I'm just trying to provide insight at the code pieces which I
think should be fixed (even though they are easy to find just looking
for '/tmp' in the sources). The patch has been done against the
build-tree that the Debian package creates.

It's not included in the patch but I'm slightly worried about the
following file: build-tree/postgresql-7.4.6/src/pl/plperl/ppport.h
Shouldn't this one be modified to one that doesn't use $$ constructs
but File::Temp?

Hope this is useful, if you do think it's proper, please forward it
upstream.

Regards

Javier Fernandez-Sanguino

This patch looks incomplete? It only touches the dpkg-dev part of dpkg,
and doesn't change the handling of dpkg itself.

Hi,
The heavea-doc package exists but is in non-free section (which is ok

I'm pretty sure that this is a upstream (libglade2 and/or gtk2)
problem. I just call
gtk_toolbar_set_style(toolbar, GTK_TOOLBAR_BOTH_HORIZ)

thanks,

Bug#263883: fluxbox: Mouse wheeling between desktops is broken

2005-01-24 Thread Stephen Quinney
Package: fluxbox
Version: 0.9.11-1
Followup-For: Bug #263883

I am having what seems to be similar problems to those of the original
bug reporter but they are manifested in a different manner.

I have enabled desktop wheeling:

session.screen0.desktopwheeling:true

When I have 3 desktops wheeling "up" takes me "down" the desktops,
i.e. 3 -> 2 -> 1, when it used to go the other way. Wheeling "down"
now takes me "up" the desktops, i.e. 1 -> 2 -> 3.

If I have 4 desktops it gets much worse. When I am on desktop 1 or 3
the mousewheeling just alternates between those no matter which way I
wheel the mouse. The same thing happens when on 2 or 4, it just
alternates between those two desktops.

I hope this can be fixed soon as it's my driving me crazy ;-)

Thanks,

Stephen Quinney

Well, it is recommended to build in sid, also, I do think building in
woody is bad for several reasons:
- you do not ship what's in sarge, you cannot reproduce the build
because it was build with software not in sarge. This is often the
case in minor ways, but intentionally doing so seems awkward at best.
- only one architecture will have these older woody depends, all other
architectures not. I don't know what reason you have to build on
woody, but that's defeated by this buildd reason.
- Suppose one day after sarge is released a security update needs to be
made, and this package is suddenly build on sarge. There might be
weird bugs hiding there, since nobody tested it this way, only builded
on woody. I think it's very important to make sure security uploads
are not going to change the package in bad ways, and suddenly building
with a much different libc et al, and a different gcc with different
properties apparantly (this bug is directly caused by it) might be
resulting in such bad changes, we simply don't know, since it hasn't
  been tested.

So, why do you really want to build this on woody, and not just build on
sid as everybody else does?

Bug#184256: big fonts - freetype or pango

2005-01-24 Thread browaeys . alban
This need a check but from what i know of mozilla it let freetype,
fontconfig and pango manage its fonts.

This bug will never be resolved if it stay ine the mozilla side of
things.

from experience with similar problems last year in openoffice and
gnome-font-properties , i would tell that it was one of the many
libfreetype bug which are fixed by now fixes.

also check with gnome-font-properties, click advanced , that the dpi for
the default dpi is not below 70 .

Does that mean that the version in sid has all this typos/errors

Bug#206741: Aw: Re: Bug#206741: KDE Support (XScreenSaver.desktop) doesn't fit to supplied xscreensaver.kss

2005-01-24 Thread Jamie Zawinski
Well, after thinking about it some more, I'm inclined to remove this
xscreensaver.kss file from the next release of xscreensaver (unless I
hear a good reason not to.) I added it at someone's request years ago,
but now I think it just doesn't belong there at all.

If the KDE folks think they should be using their own screen saving
framework instead of my xscreensaver daemon, that's their choice; but if
they also choose to try and run the xscreensaver display modes in that
foreign framework, then *they* should be the ones responsible for, you
know, making it actually *work*.

In my opinion, and from what I hear of the experience of others, the
only sensible way to make use of xscreensaver in a KDE environment is to
disable KDE's screensaver framework and run the xscreensaver daemon, as
documented in the xscreensaver FAQ and manual:

http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/faq.html#kde

Bug#291967: wmaker treats multiple instances of the same program as one

2005-01-24 Thread Konstantin Seiler
Package: wmaker
Version: 0.91.0-6
Severity: important

In the latest version wmaker started to treat multiple instances of the same
application as one. That is only one symbol is created for all of them and
when you want to hide one, wmaker hides them all. The kill-command (issued
via the symbol) is sent to all instances, too.

What is this mdom user/group? What package created it?

This is not a base-passwd bug, as nothing else should ever create users
or groups in the space reserved for use by base-passwd; I'm trying to
figure out where to reassign it.

Bug#291715: xt-aterm_2.0.5-1(ia64/unstable): FTBFS: debian/rules issues?

2005-01-24 Thread Julien Lemoine
Hi Steve and LaMont,

The fact is that this package DO not work on 64 bits architectures
from the begining (alpha, ia64 ARE NOT in the build list of controil
file). I had a lot of conversation with upstream author to
improve 64bits support in the last years (give them access to my
alpha...). But for the moment, the portabilitie problems are not solved,
xt-aterm can be compiled but all program linked with it segv.

The only program that use the xt-* package is xt-stratego and it does
not have maintainer anymore. I will orphan all my xt-*
package to have more time to maintain others.

Best Regards.

Bug#279323: Fix for Zope segfault on amd64

2005-01-24 Thread A Mennucc

hi everybody

Does zope2.7 segfauls as well?

In zope2.7 the line is

  if (!PyArg_ParseTuple(args, "sI:initgroups", &username, &igid))

From http://www.python.org/doc/2.4/api/arg-parsing.html

"I" (integer) [unsigned int]
Convert a Python integer to a C unsigned int, without overflow checking.
New in version 2.3.

I also found this bit from the 'info libc6'
With the `-Wformat' option, the GNU C compiler checks calls to
`scanf' and related functions. It examines the format string and
verifies that the correct number and types of arguments are supplied.
There is also a GNU C syntax to tell the compiler that a function you
write uses a `scanf'-style format string. *Note Declaring Attributes
of Functions: (gcc.info)Function Attributes, for more information.

Does this apply to PyArg_ParseTuple ?

Bug#291968: ksirc: History length arbitrary limitation

2005-01-24 Thread Tor Arntsen
Package: ksirc
Version: 4:3.3.1-2
Severity: normal

In "General KSirc Settings", "History lenght" is limited to 1000.

I was using 3000 as history length for a long time, but at
some stage an arbitrary limit of 1000 has been inserted into ksirc,
with the result that I lose needed history when I'm away from my
computer more than a day. Such arbitrary limits should not
exist according to GNU standards, and in any case 1000 is
a ridiculously low limit (as this problem wasn't there in earlier
versions one would think it should be easy to correct).

All i386 cpus and all mips cpus.

That syntax is not (yet?) supported by my patch. In any case I'd prefer:

   [cpu: i386 ...] [system: linux ...]

which is easier to parse. However, note the example is equivalent to [i386]
currently.

These three questions have basicaly the same answer: my patch doesn't
modify the way dpkg interacts with DAK. dpkg-genchanges uses Cpu/System
logic to determine wether we can build a package, but when generating
DEBIAN/control it will add an "Architecture" field set to DEB_HOST_ARCH.

So, DAK can work ignorant of this feature. This means the combination you
describe won't work any better than currently. (i.e., if you want to avoid
data duplication, you'll have to set it to "all". If you want to have it for
mips and mipsel, you'll have to accept data duplication).

Would it not be better to name the package ocaml-curl? Maybe we need a
general policy on language bindings names. It is a shame we have

As I just said to Goswin, my patch doesn't modify the way dpkg handles
architectures internaly. dpkg-genchanges uses Cpu/System logic to determine
wether we can build a package, but when generating DEBIAN/control it will add
an "Architecture" field set to DEB_HOST_ARCH.

Of course, I'd like a full transition on the long term. But keeping backwards
compatibility is the most important for me at this point. IMHO, you can
do this change safely in experimental without disrupting the sarge release.

(Although we won't really start using this feature untill the buildds have
a similar fix applied and we ammend Policy to require use of this syntax).

Bug#263883: fluxbox: alt-tab is cycling out of order and skipping windows

2005-01-24 Thread Chris McCormick
Ok, I think i've figured out when this is happening. Perhaps it isn't a
bug but it's not how the program used to behave before this release.
Here's a test [I have alt-tab bound to 'NextWindow 0' for this test].

create window 1
create window 2
create window 3
create window 4

alt-tab cycling between these works perfectly cycling in the order of
their creation. now if i cycle 4->3 and then click on window 3 the tab
order changing becomes unpredictable (no longer goes 4->3->2->1) and
seems to change around for a couple of cycles before settling on some
new order. Is this how it's meant to behave? Perhaps I should ask the
fluxbox maintainers?

Thanks for your time.

Regards,

Chris.

Bug#184556: mozilla-xft display some chinese in disorder.

2005-01-24 Thread browaeys . alban
This is a non bug. The font choosen which is missing some characters
(thus creating box with the utf8 number) depends on the user
configuration.

Also now that xft1 is obsolete, obviously the font come from pango (if X
still have a partial support, the configuration file /etc/X11/XftConfig
is not in the x packages anymore, thus upgrade or cleanup are not
performed).

Xft2 use fontconfig (provide the font list, and perform a filtering for
each font forge), libfreetype2 and X Render extension .

This bug should either move to the whole sarge so that it use only fonts
taht have all caracters for all languages (be it tibetan) by default
(let s say even for firewall tasks).

My main concern is why those font bugs are still listed as mozilla bugs
!
mozilla does not manage fonts itself , it cannot draw font badly. Only
the user can change the font settings, and fontconfig the default font
(by binding serif to another font than usual).
libfreetype2 can provide wrong sizes or render badly .

the only way to fix those are downgrading freetype when it breaks or
configuring fontconfig filters with dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig.
And obviously checking the DPI either the X one (from X logs) or the
gnome (gnome-font-manager), kde ones (kxconfig).

For those that want most world characters check that you have the
bitstream vera installed, it has tibetan, indi, georgian , maybe antic
egyptian :)

Also it can happens that corrupted or baldy packaged fonts make
freetype2 either segfault or render improper sizes. So if it bugs just
after installing a font, try removing it first.

Ciao
Alban

The original posters problem was a keybinding problem. This appears to

The same, or a very similar problem has been reported to me by Brian
Pack (acfpack/verizon.net) - he reports that his problem was caused by
having two mouse(s) (mice?) in /etc/X11/XFree86-4. It sounds like each
time you try to mouse-wheel, it moves two desktops, instead of one.

Give this a try.

HTH, etc.

Bug#291971: MK is not alternative language for BG

2005-01-24 Thread Ognyan Kulev
Package: languagechooser
Version: 1.44
Severity: important
Tags: d-i patch
Hi,
I know it's very late for any changes in Sarge branch, but I found a
thing that can make any Bulgarian laugh at Debian and I would like to
avoid that ;-) In r21549, Anton Zinoviev made the bg line in
languagechooser like that:

Bulgarian;bg_BG;bg_BG;bg;BG;bg_BG:bg:mk:en_GB:en;kbd=ruscii_8x16(cp1251)
Notice that when there is no Bulgarian translation for a program and
there is Macedonian translation, the Macedonian translation is shown.
At first sight, it looks like broken Bulgarian, but after closer look
you find some strange letters like "j" (latin letter). The impression
is bad. I contacted Anton and he agrees that this change was mistake.
So please, please consider fixing this. Trivial patch is attached.
Note that this is far from dangerous change.

I admit that I should catch this earlier but I didn't go that far (using
installed Desktop task) in testing d-i.

ogi

Dear Scott,

I am using your wine packages from:

deb http://wine.sourceforge.net/apt/ binary/
deb-src http://wine.sourceforge.net/apt/ source/

and it's just great! Thank you!

It would be way cool if your packages could be the official Debian ones.
I sincerely hope that some solution can be found, so that it can happen.

Best regards,

Not sure about that. I don't deal with time in C so am not sure what
the best approach is. However, I don't think timezones are going to
change in our time scales. :) So I think coming up with a fix to
handle all timezones should work fine for the future.

I guess Mark will know better.

Yes, but that is a bugs.debian.org feature and not part of core debbugs.
Note that this report is filed against debbugs.

Even if you did that, it wouldn't mean you'd get updates. Submitters are
not automatically sent mail that's sent to bugs they submitted. This is
all part of the same generic problem.

Hello,

The test for ZIP drive doesn't work: '/media' should be
replaced by '/model' at the end of the 'PROGRAM' directive
(as suggested by the reporter of #289525).

The test could be also a little bit relaxed in order to work
also with IOMEGA ZIP 250.

Bug#186259: Re : Bug#186259: Screenshot and config

2005-01-24 Thread browaeys . alban
Hi ,

My guesses are that this bug is fixed for you by now.

In case it is not , have you tried latest xserver-xfree86 4.3.0 ?
Your problem is about font drawing which is managed by an xserver
extension XRender.

This may be still be a mozilla but i used it in such environment, multi
head or mulit cards , xineram or not and never had this problem. I would
tell it is a xserver or driver bug, but since 2003 the code that manage
fonts has been rewritten two times. Could you confirm that this is
fixed or that you cannot reproduce it (lack of hardware or else) ?

Cheers
Alban

I have noticed that suddenly, both xterms and KDE konsole are
sometimes just exiting when I just press enter or exit mutt or
something like that. After a bit of looking around I found out that it
is caused by setting the tcsh shell mail variable in .tcshrc

It seems that this mail check outputs something that causes
xterm or konsole to exit (konsole says: exit with signal 11).

On-screen display overlays shaped text on your screen; it has a similar effect

ability possible. Gaim OSD is an implementation of the XOSD library, allowing

This patch has been backported upstream to the 1.4.5-CVS, and will
probably make it into the next stable release. When that occurs this will
of course also be packaged for Debian.

I've uploaded new binary packages to

I could confirm this - if I set my timezone to Asia/Calcutta, which is
GMT+5:30, I get the segfault, too.

Bug#291975: mondoarchive can segfault when newt interface is used (option -g)

2005-01-24 Thread Andree Leidenfrost
Package: mondo
Version: 2.04-2
Severity: normal

monodarchive sometimes segfaults when used with option '-g' which turns
on the newt interface. Basically the more there is to archive, i.e. the
longer it runs, the more likely is a segfault.

An (inconclusive) sample backtrace looks like this:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

If the libfribidi0 package is installed, the segfaults go away and mondoarchive
runs just fine with the '-g' option.

libfribidi is used opportunistically according to
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=260898.

I have a strong suspicion that there is something wrong with this but can't
nail it down. I have filed
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=290722 against the
slang1a-utf8 package.

I would very much welcome any help in overcoming this issue.

Best regards
Andree

Bug#289923: vlc: Patch

2005-01-24 Thread Goswin Brederlow
Package: vlc
Followup-For: Bug #289923

Hi,

looking over this bug I don't think this is an change in the ABI of
wxWindows but rather a gcc update with stricter ansi c++ checking.

Attached is a patch that removes two default parameters each from the
ambigious calls resulting in g++ finding an unambigious one.

The patch compiles and runs (only divx/avi file tested) fine on amd64.

Sure, it was proposed as a quick hack for the Debian package, where it
is safe to assume /bin/rm is from GNU coreutils.

If it weren't for the requirement to retain the current API (returning
the number of deletions, and verbose output) then a thin wrapper around

  system 'rm', '-rf', @paths

would suffix for POSIX systems.

A race is a race, no matter how small the window.

I'm sorry, but it's very unclear to me what exactly the status is of this
bug. Is this bug still open (and with the latest 1.4.4-1 package?)?
Otherwise I will close this bug.

To replicate the problem, it is not enough to
set mail=(0 /var/spool/mail/user)

It must check more than one mailbox -- e.g.
set mail=(0 /var/spool/mail/$user \
   $HOME/mail/bugtraq-l.new \
   $HOME/mail/postmaster.new \
   $HOME/mail/freshmeat.new )

Bug#288464: Patch for pytables 0.9.1-1.1 NMU

You should mention this in the bug report (especially when it are
RC/important bugs).

No problem. Daniel: shout if you disagree ;-)

I don't understand why you changed the Depends of python-tables the way
you did: you depend on python2.3-tables, but it is ok to have only
python2.4 (and no python2.3)?
You should address the lintian bugs/warnings (especially
hyphen-used-as-minus-sign):
W: python2.3-tables: description-synopsis-starts-with-a-capital-letter
N:
N: The synopsis (first line in the package "Description:" field, the
N: short description) starts with a letter in uppercase. It is
N: recommended to use lowercase instead.
N:
N: Refer to Developers Reference, section 6.2.2 for details.
N:
W: python2.3-tables: description-synopsis-starts-with-an-article
N:
N: The synopsis (first line in the package "Description:" field, the
N: short description) starts with an article, either definite ("the") or
N: indefinite ("a" or "an"). It is recommended to use a synopsis without
N: the article instead.
N:
N: Refer to Developers Reference, section 6.2.2 for details.
N:
W: python2.2-tables: description-synopsis-starts-with-a-capital-letter
W: python2.2-tables: description-synopsis-starts-with-an-article
W: python-tables-doc: description-synopsis-starts-with-a-capital-letter
W: python-tables-doc: description-synopsis-starts-with-an-article
I: python-tables: hyphen-used-as-minus-sign
usr/share/man/man1/ptdump.1.gz:35
N:
N: Manual page seems to contain a hyphen where a minus sign was intended.
N: '-' chars are interpreted as hyphens (U+2010) by groff, not as minus
N: signs (U+002D). Since options to programs use minus signs (U+002D),
N: this means for example in UTF-8 locales that you cannot cut&paste
N: options, nor search for them easily.
N:
N: '-' must be escaped ('\-') to be interpreted as minus. If you really
N: intend a hyphen, write it as '\(hy' to emphasise that fact. See
N: groff(7) and especially groff_char(7) for details, and also the thread
N: starting with
N: http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2003/debian-devel-200303/msg01481
N: .html
N:
N: If you use some tool that converts your documentation to groff format,
N: it might be possible that this tool converts dashes of any kind to
N: groff hyphens, while the safe way of converting dashes is usually to
N: convert them to '\-'.
N:
N: Because this error can occur very often we show only the first 10
N: occurrences for each man page and give the number of suppressed
N: occurrences. If you want to see all warnings, run lintian with the
N: -d/--debug option.
