Bug#618572: discover-data: Virtual machines get package mpt-status installed

2011-03-16 Thread Christopher Odenbach
Package: discover-data
Version: 2.2010.10.18
Severity: normal

Hi,

a freshly installed virtual machine (VMware ESX 4.0, LSI Logic Parallel scsi
controller) with Debian squeeze
will get the package 'mpt-status' installed. This package by default starts the
daemon 'mpt-statusd' which then
detects a problem as there is no raid controller installed.

No, it is not. It is a virtual scsi controller. I have never heard of
virtual machines having raid controllers.

I am not the only one experiencing this bug:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/debian-26/debian-reports-non-optimal-raid-status-866272/

If you have access to ESX 4.0 or higher you can quickly reproduce the
bug: Just create a new virtual machine and chose "custom settings", then
you can chose the mentioned scsi controller (which is the default one,
so it will also be chosen if you do not tick the custom settings).

Correct, that would be nice indeed. But at the moment the parallel LSI
logic scsi controller is the VMware default for Debian (Lenny as there
is currently no support for Squeeze in VMware), so it would be good to
detect this hardware correctly to stop the mpt-status package from being
installed by default and filling the logs with wrong information.

Bug#685618: d-i: do not install mpt-status on vmware hardware

2012-10-25 Thread Christopher Odenbach
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

I can confirm the PCI subsystem id of 15ad:1976 on current VMware
virtual machines:

root@kastner[~]# lspci -vvvnn | grep LSI
00:10.0 SCSI storage controller [0100]: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic
53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI [1000:0030] (rev 01)
Subsystem: VMware LSI Logic Parallel SCSI Controller [15ad:1976]

So this is clearly only a virtual SCSI controller, not a RAID
controller. Installing mpt-status is really useless in this case.
Please exclude it for this PCI subsystem id.

Thanks,

Christopher
