Bug#618572: discover-data: Virtual machines get package mpt-status installed
Package: discover-data Version: 2.2010.10.18 Severity: normal Hi, a freshly installed virtual machine (VMware ESX 4.0, LSI Logic Parallel scsi controller) with Debian squeeze will get the package 'mpt-status' installed. This package by default starts the daemon 'mpt-statusd' which then detects a problem as there is no raid controller installed. root@test14[~]# discover | sort -u Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA Intel Corporation 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI VMware PCI Express Root Port VMware PCI bridge VMware SVGA II Adapter VMware Virtual Machine Communication Interface root@test14[~]# discover-pkginstall -l | grep -v ^$ mpt-status Thanks, Christopher -- Package-specific info: lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX Host bridge [8086:7190] (rev 01) 00:01.0 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 440BX/ZX/DX - 82443BX/ZX/DX AGP bridge [8086:7191] (rev 01) 00:07.0 ISA bridge [0601]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ISA [8086:7110] (rev 08) 00:07.1 IDE interface [0101]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 IDE [8086:7111] (rev 01) 00:07.3 Bridge [0680]: Intel Corporation 82371AB/EB/MB PIIX4 ACPI [8086:7113] (rev 08) 00:07.7 System peripheral [0880]: VMware Virtual Machine Communication Interface [15ad:0740] (rev 10) 00:0f.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: VMware SVGA II Adapter [15ad:0405] 00:10.0 SCSI storage controller [0100]: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI [1000:0030] (rev 01) 00:11.0 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI bridge [15ad:0790] (rev 02) 00:15.0 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:15.1 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:15.2 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:15.3 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:15.4 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:15.5 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:15.6 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:15.7 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:16.0 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:16.1 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:16.2 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:16.3 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:16.4 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:16.5 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:16.6 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:16.7 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:17.0 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:17.1 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:17.2 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:17.3 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:17.4 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:17.5 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:17.6 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:17.7 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:18.0 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:18.1 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:18.2 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:18.3 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:18.4 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:18.5 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:18.6 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 00:18.7 PCI bridge [0604]: VMware PCI Express Root Port [15ad:07a0] (rev 01) 02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation 82545EM Gigabit Ethernet Controller (Copper) [8086:100f] (rev 01) loaded modules: 8086:7111 ata_piix 15ad:0740 vmci 1000:0030 mptspi 8086:100f e1000 -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=de_DE.utf8, LC_CTYPE=de_DE.utf8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash discover-data depends on no packages. No, it is not. It is a virtual scsi controller. I have never heard of virtual machines having raid controllers. I am not the only one experiencing this bug: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/debian-26/debian-reports-non-optimal-raid-status-866272/ If you have access to ESX 4.0 or higher you can quickly reproduce the bug: Just create a new virtual machine and chose "custom settings", then you can chose the mentioned scsi controller (which is the default one, so it will also be chosen if you do not tick the custom settings). -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, > When bug #600957[0] is solved, you'd at least have another (performant) > solution... > > [0] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=600957 Correct, that would be nice indeed. But at the moment the parallel LSI logic scsi controller is the VMware default for Debian (Lenny as there is currently no support for Squeeze in VMware), so it would be good to detect this hardware correctly to stop the mpt-status package from being installed by default and filling the logs with wrong information. Bug#685618: d-i: do not install mpt-status on vmware hardware
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I can confirm the PCI subsystem id of 15ad:1976 on current VMware virtual machines: root@kastner[~]# lspci -vvvnn | grep LSI 00:10.0 SCSI storage controller [0100]: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c1030 PCI-X Fusion-MPT Dual Ultra320 SCSI [1000:0030] (rev 01) Subsystem: VMware LSI Logic Parallel SCSI Controller [15ad:1976] So this is clearly only a virtual SCSI controller, not a RAID controller. Installing mpt-status is really useless in this case. Please exclude it for this PCI subsystem id. Thanks, Christopher - -- == Dipl.-Ing.
