Dear Maintainer,

booting to Debian Installer fails on a 6th Generation Lenovo ThinkPad
X1 (type 20KH-006MMX) with the following symptoms:

* Boot from a Debian installation media (mini.iso 2018-05-18 on a USB
drive). Also tested with Wheezy, Jessie, Stretch and Testing amd64
  ISOs.

* GRUB menu (version 2.02-2) shows options "Install", "Advanced
options" and "Install with speech synthesis".

* On entering "Install", the screen goes blank. The machine is still
powered on and the keyboard leds respond to, e.g., the "mute"
button. Switching to virtual terminals does not help as the screen
  appears dead.

Similar problems with a blank screen have been reported on earlier
versions of the ThinkPad X1 (see
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=210007) with workarounds
involving boot parameters intel_pstate=no_hwp or
intel_pstate=disable. In this case, this does not help. Also, the bug
appears on several kernel versions (from 3.16 in Jessie).

Booting to a live environment using debian-live-9.3.0-amd64-gnome.iso
is not affected by the bug. The live system uses a full 2560x1440
resolution on a 4.9.0-4-amd64 kernel. However, the "Install" option on
the same ISO results in a blank screen.

Problem: When running the Debian installer (tried jessie, stretch,
buster-alpha-3 and testing), in UEFI mode,
and reaching the first screen, where I must choose between graphical and text
install (and other options),
any option I choose results in the new screen appearing on the upper part of
the monitor, repeated ten
times horizontally, and shrinked so that text lines are around a couple monitor
pixels tall (the whole band
of repeating screens may be around 60 pixels tall). The rest of the screen
still displays the grub background.
The shrinked repeating screen, if choosing the graphical install, shows a black
screen (some white lines appear
before it gets black, which may be text) and for the text install option,
the new screen does look like the text installation screen, responding as
expected to the keyboard, but
the letters are so small (around two pixels tall) that I cannot read the
options. It seems
to be responding correctly to keyboard input but, of course, I cannot see what
I'm doing.

Changing the graphics card, the monitor and/or graphics related BIOS options
has had little effect so far
(some combinations removed the band of shrinked screens, leaving just the grub
background).
I cannot try a Legacy BIOS installation, since that particular BIOS (Aptio
Setup Utility, AMI,
v2.20.1271) only allows using UEFI, and the Fujitsu web shows no updates for
that BIOS.

The Ubuntu 18.04 installer did work (both for the server and desktop editions),
but trying to copy
the Ubuntu grub options and edit the Debian grub options accordingly didn't
have any effect. I've
tried changing the kernel and grub options too, following some googled reports
about UEFI installation
problems, with no success at all.

Hi,

I've tried to install Debian on my new laptop HP EliteBook 830 G5
but failed since it shows only blank screen after selecting installation
mode (both graphical and text). Screen doesn't work but system still
seems to alive because when I've selected "Install with speech synthesis"
 it speaks.

UEFI secure boot was disabled, and it looks similar to Bug#899240
but it doesn't work even if legacy boot is enabled.

However, Ubuntu 18.04.1 boots successfully, so I can get hardware info and
 attach it to this report.

 Any ideas?

Hmm, maybe the debian-boot list should be prompted for this? (since they
could be considered responsible for this page)
Or debian-cd, since they are responsible for the sorts of images getting
built?
(both CC'ed).

As long as they don't judge in any direction, I would probably don't change
anything.

It's a bit of a pointless change IMHO, but I don't really care. We
have had multi-arch DVD images in the past as well, but not for a
while due to space constraints (not enough packages fit for >1 arch
for them to be sensible).

Thanks for checking.

Assuming you meant stretch + stretch-proposed-updates, meaning an
unchanged source package, I've asked the release team (cc-ed), and it
was confirmed binNMUing debian-installer seems appropriate. This will
be done shortly.

No changes from the git branch, other than a changelog entry to bump the

The rationale for this change is IMO not correct.

Michael Biebl wrote:
| all important cron jobs have a corresponding .timer unit

This is not a sufficient condition. Firstly, it is necessary for all
cron jobs, not just ones considered `important', to have a
corresponding timer unit, for this change to be correct.

Secondly, this change simply breaks systems without systemd. If
(which I deny) it is a good idea to change this for systemd systems,
measures should be taken to arrange that non-systemd systems still get
anacron. For example, a dependency on systemd-sysv | anacron

(Thirdly, and tangentially, for reasons explored further in the
debian-devel thread, systemd timer units are not a suitable
replacement for many applications.)

Also I think that when changes are being made which might break
non-systemd systems, the Debian Ecosystem Init Diversity team
 debian-init-divers...@chiark.greenend.org.uk
should be consulted so that the appropriate fixes can be developed.

Finally, this change is rather late wrt the freeze.

Ian.

anacron was added to the desktop-task a long time ago.
The changelog doesn't mention why it was added, but I assume it was to
support systems which are not running 24/7 and to ensure that cron jobs
have a chance to run.

Nowadays, we have systemd .timer units, which handle this issue much
nicer. I checked a default desktop installation, and all important cron
jobs have a corresponding .timer unit.
It thus seems safe to drop anacron from task-desktop.

Bug#915370: fixed in tasksel 3.51

Control: found -1 3.51

I think this was closed by accident

Re-opening this bug report. Dropping anacron from task-desktop/laptop
should still happen. If not for buster, then for buster+1

Bug#813055: done?

2019-03-10 Thread Vincent.Mcintyre
Hi

I think this may have been handled?

% git remote -v
origin https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/partman-auto.git (fetch)
origin https://salsa.debian.org/installer-team/partman-auto.git (push)

% git log --oneline recipes-amd64-efi/atomic
4d2966b Set minimimum size of / partition
a5df6f5 Increase the EFI System Partition size slightly to ensure
that it's at least 512MiB, not just 512MB. See LP #1306164.
4df3586 Add x86 UEFI support, merging some code from Ubuntu to help

What I am unable to check at present is whether requesting an 'atomic'
partitioning in the preseed file and UEFI netbooting automagically
selects the recipe above.

Cheers
Vince

Bug#924289: update EFI example in partman-auto-recipe.txt

2019-03-10 Thread Vincent.Mcintyre
Package: debian-installer
Version: 20190119
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hello

I recently spent some time working on getting EFI installs going.
It took rather a lot of digging to find out how to set up an EFI
partition in a partitioning recipe so I thought I would try to
make the documentation more accessible.

Please consider merging the attached patch.

Kind regards
Vince

Subject: [PATCH] Update EFI example

Use a common architecture (amd64) in preference to an unsupported one.
Also, give an example of a path to a specific recipe within partman-auto.

Bug#924290: [rfc] information about EFI partitions

2019-03-10 Thread Vincent.Mcintyre
Package: installation-guide
Version: 20180930
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi

recently I was learning about presseding UEFI installs and
I think the install guide could use a small addition to make
that journey easier. I also sent a patch to partman-auto-recipe.txt
but I am sure the readership of that is much less than the d-i manual.

Kind regards
Vince
