I'm not sure why >= stretch should be more complicated? Something like
[1] (untested) should work?

Bug#774331: debootstrap: fakechroot variant fails with fakechroot not found

Hi,

 Running "$ fakechroot fakeroot /usr/sbin/debootstrap --variant=fakechroot
jessie jessie"
 on Jessie works fine, on Stretch and newer fakechroot causes segfault
 but it is not debootstrap's fault.

 It seems that is fakechroot issue, too.

Debian Installer Buster Alpha 3 release

2018-06-19 Thread Cyril Brulebois
The Debian Installer team[1] is pleased to announce the third alpha
release of the installer for Debian 10 "Buster".

Improvements in this release

 * apt-setup:
- If installing from a single-desktop single CD image, comment it out
  from sources.list after installation like we do with the netinst
  images, along with an explanation in comment as well.
 * cryptsetup:
- Upgrade to upstream version 2.0.0.
 * debian-installer:
- Bump Linux kernel ABI from 4.13.0-1 to 4.16.0-2.
- Replace c_rehash with openssl rehash (#895074). That should only
  affect builds with SSL_CERTS enabled; regular HTTPS support
  comes from ca-certificates anyway.
- Ensure stricter separation from host's apt configuration by
  setting APT_CONFIG during the build process.
- Tweak Acquire::Languages, Apt::Architecture, Apt::Architectures
  and disable both apt.conf.d and preferences.d snippets.
- Drop libnewt0.52 from Build-Depends, the library now provides
  an udeb.
- Run fc-cache when /etc/fonts or /usr/share/fonts exist (for gtk
  targets), to avoid having to generate UUIDs at runtime, which
  can be hard because of missing entropy (#898468).
 * debian-installer-utils:
- Fix "list-devices partition" to also report LVM logical volumes
  (#868848).
 * debootstrap:
- Add support for bookworm.
- Add Acquire-By-Hash support.
- Too many other improvements to list them all here.
 * espeakup:
- Fix path to voice definitions, which fixes language auto-switch
  in the installer.
- Configure debconf frontend to readline on the installed system
  for better accessibility.
- Improve console/X11 VT switches.
 * flash-kernel:
- Fix issues in handle_dtb (#870430).
- Add option to allow "any" in Kernel-Flavors (#883547).
- Warn when ubootenv.d snippet will be ignored (#884376).
- Adjust sunxi boot script to prefer prefix variable if defined.
- Add support for relative paths for DTB-Id (#860304).
- Add compatibility symlink to dtb in vendor sub-directory.
- Add support for root device specified by PARTLABEL.
- Provide hook to start EFI application (#873390).
- Fix when no Kernel-Flavors are defined (#887803).
- Add support for Boot-Kernel-Path-Version,
  Boot-Initrd-Path-Version, and Boot-DTB-Path-Version
 * iso-scan:
- Detect LVM logical volumes so that they can be used to find the
  ISO image being looked for (#868859).
- Copy the ISO image into RAM before mounting it when debconf
  question iso-scan/copy_iso_to_ram is true. This makes it
  possible to use the disk that provided the ISO image for
  (automatic) partitioning (#868900).
 * localechooser:
- Use iso_3166-1.mo filename instead of the compatibility symlink
  (#889963).
- languagelist: Enable Georgian and Lao in bterm.
- Enable all languages when using speakup_soft, which supports any
  UTF-8 language.
- Enable all languages when using speakup_dummy too, which can
  also support any UTF-8 language.
 * mdadm:
- Use the same udev rules in the installer and in the installed
  system.
 * partman-lvm:
- Make device_remove_lvm() detect errors, so as to stop early if
  anything goes wrong.
 * ppp:
- Use /bin/ip instead of /sbin/ifconfig in the interfaces
  configuration for the installed system (#889295).
- Consider interface names using udev predictable interface
  naming (#873391).
 * rescue:
- Make sure to not provide duplicate entries in the list of
  possible devices for the root partition.
 * util-linux:
- Ship fallocate in util-linux-udeb (#882001).
 * wide-dhcpv6:
- Build against static flex library to avoid a runtime dependency
  on libfl2 (#893988).

Hardware support changes

 * debian-installer:
- armhf: Add support for Cubietruck_plus.
- armhf: Enable grub-efi mini.iso (netboot).
- arm64: Generate u-boot media for pine64_plus.
- Add support for the NanoPiNeo.
 * flash-kernel:
- Add support for installing 32bit kernels on the Raspberry Pi 3
  (#886225).
- Make ubootenv.d work on Wandboard (#884375).
- Make ubootenv.d work on CuBox-i.
- Add support for SolidRun Clearfog Boards (#839595).
- Add support for SolidRun CuBox (dove) (#876773).
- Fix typos in imx-base boot script.
 * linux:
- armel: Adjust lzo-modules and mtd-modules contents and
  some reverse-dependencies.
- Add dependency from nic-modules to zlib-modules.
- armhf: Add i2c-exynos5 to i2c-modules (#895976).
- Move arc4 and ecb from nic-wireless-modules to crypto-modules
  (#895362).
- Add algif_skcipher to crypto-modules (#896968).
- Rename lzo-modules to compress-modules
- Add zstd_decompress to compress-modules and make
  squashfs-modules depend on it.
- amd64: Add vmd to scsi-modules, required for NVMe on some
  systems (#891

Built locally, and debdiff'd against version currently in jessie.
Everything looks good to me, so just uploaded.

FWIW, changes include mostly (1) Built-Using getting some versions
bumped, and (2) filenames where the kernel ABI is embedded, in

For the sake of completeness/transparency, I didn't do any runtime tests
with that version yet, because of final D-I Buster Alpha 3 preparations.
I might try and give amd64/i386 netinst a shot, just to be sure.

Since this version of cryptsetup adds support for dm-integrity
(https://gitlab.com/cryptsetup/cryptsetup/wikis/DMIntegrity), are
there any plans to eventually support it in the installer so that I
can have a root partition with checksums on all data and metadata?

However, unfortunately for now bug #896649 would be a blocker anyway
since the kernel option CONFIG_DM_INTEGRITY is not yet enabled in
the standard Debian kernel.

Since the hanging processes were no longer there, I have triggered another
push-www, and it succeeded.
(The translation statistics are not completely correct, but the sync of
website mirrors has finished without error, so it seems the "static sync"
problem is fixed.)

Thanks

To be honest, I did include this particular version bump to see if that
was sparking any reaction/interest. I happened to notice Matthew Garrett
has been working on some merge requests[1,2] to fix some issues popping
up in d-i specifically.

 1. https://salsa.debian.org/cryptsetup-team/cryptsetup/merge_requests/2
 2. https://salsa.debian.org/debian/argon2/merge_requests/3

I guess you could start by documenting what such a plan should look
like, in a bug report against partman-crypto (which should be a good
starting point I suppose)?

Such a blocker shouldn't last long, enabling an option is usually done
rather quickly if there's no obvious issue/conflict with it. Drafting a
sound plan, then implementing it would be the hard part.

If I parse that correctly you as asking is it possible to possible to
do a debootstrap inside of a chroot. The answer is yes of course, but
even if it wasn't I provided examples where it failed when not running
in a chroot - it was running inside a container (ie, systemd-nspawn)
and a VM (qemu-system-x86_64).

Perhaps you are asking if it's possible to do it inside a fakechroot?
If so the answer is again yes.

But first you have to understand the root cause of the failure. It's
this: fakechroot (and fakeroot for that matter) work by hacking Linux's
dynamic loading system. They insert a shim dll that intercepts some
calls (eg, getuid() and chroot()) to make it appear as if the user is
root. But ldconfig doesn't use dll's, it's statically linked, so it
doesn't see the hack. So when the posinst scripts run by debootstrap
invoke ldconfig it attempts to alter the real systems dll
/etc/ld.so.conf, which fortunately gets a permission failure because
the user isn't really root.

The problem isn't insurmountable as ldconfig has a -r option, which
changes the directory it uses as root. SO the authors of ldconfig have
done what they can to help us work around the problem. If we can
arrange all attempts to invoke "$TARGET/bin/ldconfig ..." inside of the
debootstrap to instead run "$TARGET/bin/ldconfig -r $TARGET ..." it
should all work, and indeed it does work.

Unfortunately how to do that isn't obvious. debootstrap moves
/bin/ldconfig to /bin/ldconfig.REAL, and naively replaces /bin/ldconfig
with:

   #!/bin/sh
   ...other stuff...

That won't work because of the #!/bin/sh. /bin/sh itself depends on
dll's, and those dll's aren't set up until ldconfig is run so "...other
stuff..." is never run.

Here are options that will work:

1. Do what is done now in a way that will work, which boils down to
using no dynamically linked program inside of the debootstrap
environment until ldconfig has been run successfully. Make
debootstrap depend on the statically linked busybox, place a copy
of it in $TARGET/debootstrap, move $TARGET/bin/ldconfig to
$TARGET/bin/ldconfig.REAL (as happens now), and change the
shell script put in the place of $TARGET/bin/ldconfig to:
#!/debootstrap/busybox sh
"$TARGET/bin/ldconfig.REAL" -r "$TARGET" "$@"

2. Use the FAKECHROOT_CMD_SUBST feature of fakechroot. Set it to:
FAKECHROOT_CMD_SUBST=/bin/ldconfig=$TARGET/debootstrap/ldconfig
When you do that whenever a program attempts to invoke
/bin/ldconfig inside of the chroot fakeconfig instead runs
$TARGET/debootstrap/ldconfig outside of the chroot. Write
the following script to $TARGET/debootstrap/ldconfig:
#!/bin/sh
"$TARGET/bin/ldconfig" -r "$TARGET" "$@"

This works because we are now using the hosts /bin/sh to hack
the
ldconfig command line.

3.  Move $TARGET/bin/ldconfig to $TARGET/bin/ldconfig.REAL (as happens
now), include a small statically linked C program as part of
debootstrap that invokes $TARGET/bin/ldconfig.REAL -r $TARGET and
temporarily replace $TARGET/bin/ldconfig with that program.

I used method 1 to verify the general approach works.
